Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 37 of God of Lies and Mischief and the Woman of Many Faces. Thank you to those who have left reviews. It really does mean a lot to me. I'm trying my best with writing these chapters out. Plus we're getting closer to the chapter where it will be strictly my own writing. No movies involved. Perhaps mentioned yes, but nothing more than that. Without further ado Chapter 37. ENJOY!

Chapter 37

The four of them were escorted to the van.

"It was him. He looked right at me like he didn't even know me." Steve said softly to them as they walked.

"How's that even possible? It was like seventy years ago." Sam questioned his brows furrowed slightly.

"Zola. Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43, Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and…"

"None of that's your fault, Steve." Natasha said softly as she held her shoulder.

"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky."

Sam noticed that Natasha was bleeding from her shoulder and looked to the guards. "We need to get a doctor here. We don't put pressure on that wound, she's gonna bleed out here in the truck."

Everleigh moved and put her hand on Natasha's shoulder trying to make sure that she wouldn't bleed out.

Suddenly one of the guards pulled out an electric rod and neutralized the other guard and knocked him out. The guard was suddenly revealed to be Agent Hill as she took her helmet off. "Ah. That thing was squeezing my brain."

Sam looked at her in confusion.

Maria looked to Steve. "Who's this guy?"

Everleigh's hand glowed blue trying to keep the blood from dribbling down any more than what it already was doing at that moment.

Natasha tried to not scream out in pain as the van slowly came to a stop.

CAWSCAWS

Maria had taken them to a secret facility, and a man ran towards them. "GSW. She's lost at least a pint."

"Maybe two." Sam piped up as the Doctor moved towards Natasha.

"Let me take her." The Doctor said moving towards Natasha.

Everleigh removed her shaky hands from the gunshot wound.

"She'll want to see him first." Maria said before taking them into a room where Fury sat alive laying on a bed.

Everleigh's eyes went wide in shock.

"About damn time."

The Doctor began to treat Natasha's wound.

"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, one hell of a headache."

"Don't forget your collapsed lung." The Doctor pointed out as he continued to work.

"Oh, let's not forget that. Otherwise, I'm good."

"They cut you open, your heart stopped." Natasha said, looking at Fury with wide eyes.

"Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute. Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work so great for him, but we found a use for it."

"Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?" Steve questioned crossing his arms.

"Any attempt on the director's life had to look successful." Maria explained to them.

Everleigh scoffed, looking away looking rather irritated.

"Can't kill you if you're already dead. Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust." Nick explained to them. He looked at the photo of Pierce. "This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize. He said, "Peace wasn't an achievement, it was a responsibility." See, it's stuff like this that gives me trust issues."

"We have to stop the launch." Everleigh said, shaking her head lightly knowing that it would be something impossible to do.

"I don't think the Council's accepting my calls anymore." He opened a case containing 3 chips.

"What's that?" Sam questioned his brows furrowed some.

"Once the Helicarriers reach three thousand feet, they'll triangulate with Insight satellites becoming fully weaponized." Maria explained.

"We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own."

"One or two won't cut it. We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one of those ships remains operational a whole lot of people are gonna die."

"We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA. We need to get past them, insert the server blades, and maybe, just maybe, we can salvage what's left…"

"We're not salvaging anything. We're not just taking down the carriers, Nick, we're taking down SHIELD."

"SHIELD had nothing to do with it."

"You gave me this mission, this is how it ends. SHIELD's been compromised, you said so yourself. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed."

"Why do you think we're meeting in this cave? I noticed."

"And how many paid the price before you did?"

"Look, I didn't know about Barnes."

"Even if you have, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalized that too? SHIELD, HYDRA, it all goes."

"He's right." Maria said softly.

Fury looked at Natasha and Everleigh and then to Sam.

Sam held his hands up. "Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower."

"Well... Looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain."

Everleigh looked over at Fury. "It's the right thing to do." She admitted softly wrapping her arms around herself. "I didn't come here from out of country with all that testing done on me to join another group, like HYDRA who was growing under SHIELD's nose." She shook her head softly before turning away from the group moving away from them.

Fury let out a breath knowing that his agent was no longer someone that was willing to be part of something so dangerous. He knew what had happened to her and he couldn't blame her for thinking the way that she was at the time.

Steve pursed his lips together. "Thank you sir." Steve said softly knowing that he was going to have a hard time with making this choice and how things were going to end up. He knew that he was going to be taking Natasha, Clint, and Everleigh out of the job that they knew.
