Chapter 56
Everleigh sat four tables away from Wanda and two tables away from Natasha. She slowly brought up her cup to her lips taking a sip of the beverage that she had gotten. Her eyes wandered around the area making sure that they were all safe and hoping that they would be able to find Rumlow and bring him in.
"All right, what do you see?" Steve's voice said over the com.
"Standard beat cops. Small station. Quiet street. It's a good target." Wanda replied with her heavily accented voice.
"There's an ATM in the south corner, which means . . ."
"Cameras."
"Both cross streets are one way."
"So, compromised escape routes." Everleigh said over the com shifting a bit taking another sip of her cafe.
"Means our guy doesn't care about being seen, he isn't afraid to make a mess on the way out. You see that Range Rover halfway up the block?"
Wanda turned her head slightly seeing the red Range Rover. "Yeah, the red one? It's cute."
"It's also bulletproof, which means private security, which means more guns, which means more headaches for somebody. Probably us." Natasha said, looking over as well slowly with her eyes.
Everleigh slowly shifted her eyes to the red Range Rover. "And that is something we don't need." Everleigh murmured, shaking her head lightly not liking the idea of having more headaches involved in what they were doing.
"You guys know I can move things with my mind, right?" Wanda questioned.
"I can move things as well, but looking over your shoulder needs to become second nature to you Wanda." Everleigh said, her eyes sliding over to the young telekinesis woman.
"Leigh's right. It has to become second nature." Natasha said into her com quietly making sure that no one heard their conversation.
"Anybody ever tell you you're a little paranoid?" Sam questioned the com.
"Not to my face. Why? Did you hear something?" Natasha pointed out.
"Eyes on target, folks. This is the best lead we've had on Rumlow in six months. I don't want to lose him." Steve pointed out trying to smooth over the situation that was beginning to grow.
"If he sees us coming that won't be a problem. He kind of hates us." Sam pointed out remembering that Rumlow hated them due to what had happened to him.
A garbage truck was pushing its way through traffic, with no regard to pedestrians or other vehicles which was rather concerning.
"Sam, see that garbage truck? Tag it." Steve said into the com giving Sam the proper order hoping that they would be able to figure out everything before something bad happened.
"That truck's loaded for max weight. And the driver's armed." Sam replied after a few moments.
"It's a battering ram." Natasha said slowly moving.
"Go now." Steve ordered them all.
"What?" Wanda questioned, confused.
"He's not hitting the police."
"Of course he's not." Everleigh said slowly vanishing from her seat knowing that no one was really paying much attention to her since they were more focused on what was going on with the garbage truck that was moving through the square.
"Body armor, AR-15's. I make seven hostiles." Steve said over the com.
"I make 5." Sam said on the com.
Everleigh and Wanda arrived flying over the rooftop and into the courtyard, both blocking fire with their powers.
Wanda took control of one of the soldiers and lifted him upwards. "Sam."
Sam glided down from the rooftop, catching the soldier on one of his wings. "Four. Rumlow's on the third floor."
"Wanda, just like we practiced." Steve said over the coms.
"What about the gas?" Wanda questioned in concern.
"Get it out."
Wanda looked over nervously at Everleigh.
"You got this Wanda." Everleigh said, offering the younger woman a smile.
Wanda nodded her head before using her powers to lift Steve up through the window. She took a breath as Steve grabbed a soldier pulling off their gasmask. Wanda began to use her skills to remove the gas from the building.
Everleigh used her magic to blast some of the soldiers trying her best to help Sam with the soldiers who seemed to be growing in force.
"Rumlow has a biological weapon." Steve called over the com.
"I'm on it." Natasha said over her com.
"Sam. He's in an AFV heading north."
"I got four, they're splitting up." Sam called over the com.
"I got the two on the left." Natasha called on the com knowing that she needed to do the job properly.
"They ditched their gear. It's a shell game now. One of them has the payload."
"I'm on my way to help you guys." Everleigh said, calling over the com.
"Stay with Wanda, Leigh." Steve ordered Everleigh.
Everleigh let out a breath knowing that Wanda had to have someone with the same ability as she was to help her out. "Alright."
"He doesn't have it. I'm empty." Sam called on the com.
"One of them has to have it. We have to get it out of their hands and somewhere safe." Everleigh said, letting out a breath.
"Payload secure. Thanks, Sam." Natasha called out over the com.
"Don't thank me." Sam said over the com with a chuckle.
"I'm… not thanking that thing."
"His name is Redwing."
"I'm still not thanking it."
"He's cute. Go ahead, pet him."
"Oh come on Sam Redwing is a mechanical device and it doesn't need to be petted." Everleigh said over the com rolling her eyes.
Wanda moved quickly seeing that something was wrong. She kept the blast that Rumlow started with his vest contained around Rumlow. She lifted him into the air before she lost control of her ability.
Everleigh let out a gasp as she tried to help but her magic was too late to help contain what had happened. There was a loud explosion devastating the entire floors of nearby offices.
Wanda looked up afraid as tears slid down her cheeks.
Everleigh felt tears come to her eyes frustrated with herself that she wasn't able to help to block the blast that had happened.
"Oh my…" Steve starred up into the sky. "Sam… We need… Fire and Rescue… on the south side of the building. We gotta get up there."
