Chapter 68

Steve took over flying towards the mountains giving Everleigh a break.

Bucky sat behind Steve with his head lowered. "What's gonna happen to your friends?"

Steve stared ahead rather heavyhearted. He sighed, shaking his head. "Whatever it is… I'll deal with it."

Bucky looked up looking rather thoughtful. "I don't know if I'm worth all this, Steve."

Steve glanced back at Bucky. "What you did all those years . . . it wasn't you. You didn't have a choice."

"I know. But I did it."

"Bucky, it's not your fault for what happened." Everleigh said as she slowly opened up her eyes listening to everything that was said between the two men. "You're worth helping. You're his best friend, and I can see why."

Bucky looked over at the young woman, his cheeks coloring slightly. He couldn't believe what she was saying. "But you hardly know me."

"You were brainwashed Bucky. You had no choice in what happened. I mean yes you could've fought it but fighting something like that…" Everleigh shook her head lightly. "It sometimes doesn't end well." She grasped her arm which was exposed thanks to all the fighting that she had done. It had been torn off revealing a large marring scar that was down it. "They torture you until you comply on what they say. Thankfully that wasn't fully you that you remember what happened." She slowly got up to her feet and looked out the window.

Steve looked over at Everleigh. "You never told that story before." Steve said as he gripped the stick that he was using.

Everleigh shrugged her shoulders. "I usually have a glamor over it. I'm a shifter so it usually hides my scars." She let out a breath. "Sometimes I don't like to hide my scars all of the time. It makes it hard on my body if I do so for so long."

Steve swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded his head in understanding. Steve brought the quinjet to land beside Zemo's caterpillar truck on the remote icy mountain.

The jet's wings fold up beside the fuselage.

Bucky pulled out a rack of guns all labeled Romanoff. He took a light machine gun.

The three of them stood together, waiting for the exit ramp to descend.

Steve looked over at his friend. "You remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?"

"Was that the time we used our train money to buy hot dogs?" Bucky questioned looking over at his friend.

"You blew three bucks trying to win that stuffed bear for a redhead."

"What was her name again?"

"Dolores. You called her Doll."

"She's gotta be a hundred years old right now."

"So are we, pal." He clamped his hand on Bucky's shoulder.

The three of them walked up to the entrance that was set in rock. The door was still open.

Everleigh's brow raised slightly in concern.

"He can't have been here more than a few hours." Steve said softly as they slowly went inside.

"Long enough to wake them up." Bucky said softly.

"We can only hope that's not the case." Everleigh said, shaking her head softly.

Steve led them into the cast bunker. They traveled down into the depths inside a caged elevator. It stopped in the bowels of the bunker, the door sliding open. Steve nodded to both Bucky and Everleigh before heaving up the cage door.

Bucky readied his heavy duty machine gun and they walked along the corridor, keeping close to the wall. Bucky looked into an alcove full of junk and he, Steve, and Everleigh moved up some stairs.

At a sound they spun around aiming down the corridor.

"You ready?" Steve questioned softly.

"Yeah." Bucky said slowly nodding his head.

Suddenly the doors parted revealing Tony in his Iron Man suit.

Steve looked at Tony in surprise.

Tony walked towards the three of them. He retracted his helmet. "You seem a little defensive."

Bucky kept his gun up while Steve walked up to meet Tony with his shield covering his body. "It's been a long day."

"At ease, Soldier. I'm not currently after you."

"Then why are you here?"

"Could be your story's not so crazy. Maybe. Ross has no idea I'm here. I'd like to keep it that way. Otherwise, I gotta arrest myself."

"Well, that sounds like a lot of paperwork." Steve lowered his shield. "It's good to see you, Tony."

"You too, Cap. Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop . . . "

Steve signed to Bucky to lower his weapon and he did.

The four of them cautiously walked along the corridor.

Tony reengaged his ironman faceplate and led the three of them towards the enormous chamber that was filled with capsules. "I got heat signatures."

"How many?" Steve questioned looking over at his friend.

"Uh, one."

They entered the vast chamber, the lights came on. Hazy, yellow mist descending within the capsules. As well as Josef, each one contained an enhanced soldier from the 1991 experiment.

Steve and the others looked around in bewilderment.

"If it's any comfort, they died in their sleep." Zemo's voice rang over the radio.

All of them were shot in the head.

Bucky stared at Josef's corpse.

"Did you really think I wanted more of you?"

"What the hell?" Bucky said softly, confused about what had happened.

"I'm grateful to them, though. They brought you here." Zemo appeared in a control room.

Steve hurled his shield but it flew back.

"Please, Captain. The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets."

"I'm betting I could beat that." Tony said, his hands gripping at his sides.

"Oh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time. But then you'd never know why you came."

"You killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?" Steve questioned staring at Zemo through the window.

"I thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized . . . there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw."

"You're Sokovian. Is that what this is about?" Everleigh said, her hands glowing at her sides. Her blue eyes narrowed slightly.

"Sokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to hell. No. I'm here because I made a promise."

Steve studied Zemo. "You lost someone?"

Zemo looked grave and clicked his tongue against his teeth. "I lost everyone. And so will you." He said playing the surveillance footage from December 16, 1991.

Steve slowly stepped over to the screen.

"An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumples from within? That's dead . . . forever."
