At least they ran into six dozen voidspiders when there were Ainur present, so there was that. The three Maiar left were Singing up a firestorm. Normally Nixëlca and Mairon would probably be cancelling out one another, with Mairon's flames melting Nixëlca's snow and ice, but the addition of Cilinaril's gemflakes kept it vaguely workable.
It meant that the smallest of the spiders did not even reach the cluster of elves, dying to the flame-tornado, and that the larger ones were distinctly battered.
The only downside - beyond the obvious - was that the Valie's powerset was clearly aimed more at support. All Mellissë had going for her was her size - reaching halfway up the ravine-wall - and a general imperviousness to her fana even the Maiar could not match.
Still, Fingon did not relish having to deal with giant spiders with only a bow.
"Really!?" Proportionally with her size, so too the volume of Namó's daughter had increased. His ears hurt at whatever she said next, which was less than ideal.
A few people down from him, he could hear his grandfather's sharp intake of breath. He took the risk to turn some in his saddle, following the Valie's leg arching over the group as she switched sides of the battle. A dark mass of some kind had been drawn to the commotion, skittering down between the walls towards where they had been heading before a horde of spiders descended on them.
"That is a big spider." Maedhros muttered beside him, their bond full of planning to rearrange their group the most efficiently against it.
"That's Ungoliant." Their grandfather informed them instead, which made both of them - and most relatives in hearingrange - do a double-take. Several cursed viciously. No wonder Mellissë had slipped into what he was realizing was Valarin with no concern to what that might do to their eyes.
"Well, this is a problem." Celegorm shot one of the smaller ones even as he spoke. Tyelpë yelped, stuck in the middle of the gathering.
"My Lady!" In the utter mess things were becoming, another form appeared. Melian was briefly bumped by the horse she'd ended up beside, before making her way to her Valie, who was facing down the first and worst of the Voidspiders that had ever darkened Eä with their presence.
About the only reason said spider was not attacking yet, was the fact that her opponent was a Valie.
Melian ducked under the neck of Maglor's mare, breaking the safe cordon they'd formed around the more vulnerable - or loved - members of the larger House of Finwë.
Mellissë did not vocally answer, but she did go down on one knee, holding out her hand, which Doriath's Queen flung herself against with no hesitation.
Later, he would be unable to exactly explain what happened, same as the rest of those that were able to keep their eyes on the sight. It was like a wave, of a massive rock being thrown into a clear and flat lake, but on a metaphysical level. From somewhere, cold dread filled them, Þossaica looming over her twin and said twin's Maia.
And then, a mere moment later - or perhaps even at the same time - the world exploded around them.
