Chapter 108

Everleigh, Steve and Tony walked towards the building that was there.

A man drove by shouting at them. "Hey, man! Make love, not war!"

Everleigh pinched her nose as the car continued on going.

"Clearly, you weren't actually born here, right?" Tony said, looking over at Steve.

"The idea of me was." Steve pointed out as they walked closer and closer to where they needed to go.

"Right. Well, imagine you're SHIELD, running a quasi-fascistic intelligence organization. Where do you hide it?"

"In plain sight."

"Perhaps a bit too on the nose there." Everleigh said as she made herself change forms into a lady of Shield. She fixed her 1970's hairdo. "Come on."

The three of them entered an elevator and a woman got onboard with them.

"Good luck on your mission, Captain." Tony said as he got off on the right floor.

Everleigh slowly moved with him.

"Good luck on your project, doctors."

Everleigh moved with him, her brows furrowing together as they got further away from the elevator. "You think that Steve will be alright?"

Tony swallowed the lump in his throat. "He knows what needs to be done."

"Yes, I know that, but are you certain that he can handle it alone?" She questioned as she changed once again into something more suitable for him, a secretary for him.

"I'm certain our captain can handle it." He said as they got into the lab.

Everleigh closed her eyes as her hands glowed slightly. "Right there." She pointed out an area that looked fairly normal.

Tony moved towards the pillar she pointed out and easily opened it up. He smiled. "Gotcha. Back in the game." He said as he quickly picked up the tesseract and put it into the suitcase he carried.

"Arnim, you in there? Arnim? Hey! Door's this way, pal." Howard noticed the two of them.

"Oh, yeah." Tony said, fumbling a little bit.

"I'm looking for Dr. Zola. Have you seen him?"

"Yeah, no, Dr. Zol– No, I haven't seen a soul." Tony awkwardly bumped into a chair. "Pardon me."

Everleigh tried her best to not groan.

"Do I know you?"

"No, sir. I'm a– a visitor from MIT." Tony said, shaking his head.

"Huh. MIT. Got a name?"

"Uh– Howard."

"Well, that'll be easy to remember."

"Howard– Potts."

"Well, I'm Howard Stark." Howard said, holding out his hand.

"Hi." Tony said, holding onto Howard's finger.

"Shake it, don't pull it."

"Yeah–"

"You look a little green around the gills there, Potts."

"I'm fine. Just, long hours."

"Wanna get some air? Hello, Potts."

"Yeah. That would be swell."

"That way." Howard pointed the way that they needed to go.

"Okay."

"Need your briefcase?"

Everleigh grabbed the case for him. "I got it, boss." Everleigh said softly to him.

Tony nodded his head in agreement.

They walked towards the exit.

"You're not one of those beatniks, are ya, Potts?"

"No, sir." Tony then noticed what Howard was carrying. "So, flowers and sauerkraut. You got a big date tonight?"

"My wife's expecting. And, uh– Too much time in the office." Howard admitted rubbing the back of his neck.

"Congratulations."

"Thanks. Hold this, will you?" Howard questioned holding out the flowers.

"Yeah, sure. How far along is she?" Tony questioned as he took the flowers from his father.

"I don't know– Uh– She's at the point where she can't stand the sound of my chewing. I guess I'll be eating dinner in the pantry again."

"I have a little girl."

"A girl would be nice. Less of a chance she'd turn out exactly like me."

"What'd be so awful about that?"

"Let's just say that the greater good has rarely outweighed my own self-interests."

"So, where are you at with names?"

"Well, if it's a boy, my wife likes Elmonzo."

"Huh, Might wanna let that stew awhile. You got time."

Howard shifted a bit nervously. "Let me ask you a question. When your kid was born– were you nervous?" He questioned as they walked outside.

"Wildly. Yeah."

"Did you feel qualified? Like you had any idea how to successfully operate that thing?"

"I literally pieced it together as I went along, I thought about what my Dad did, and–"

"My old man, he never met a problem he couldn't solve with a belt."

"I thought my dad was tough on me. And now, looking back, I just remember the good stuff, you know. He did drop the odd pearl."

"Yeah? Like what?"

""No amount of money ever bought a second of time.""

"Smart guy."

Everleigh chewed the inside of her cheek knowing that Tony wasn't having an easy time with this.

"He did his best."

"Let me tell you. That kid's not even here yet, and there's nothing I wouldn't do for him. Good to meet you, Potts."

"Yeah, Howard– Everything's gonna be alright. Thank you– for everything– you've done for this country." Tony said as Howard went towards Jarvis and his car.

Everleigh looked over at Tony. "You alright?" She asked softly, gripping the case in her hands tightly.

Tony's eyes slid towards her. "I didn't think that I would have this type of talk with my dad."

"Oh? And how did it make you feel Tony?"

Tony took a breath. "Honestly I can see that he didn't want me to turn out like him."

"Every father has that idea that their children won't turn out that way." Everleigh admitted softly knowing that Tony was trying to wrap his mind around it. "I am sure that you're that way with Morgan as well."

Tony pursed his lips together in thought. Perhaps Everleigh was right about the whole thing.

This is the end of Chapter 108. I hope that you guys enjoyed this chapter. I tried my best with adding in extra scenes. I thought that it was wise to have Everleigh with Tony as he talked to his father even though it took a bit to figure out how to add her into this. I hope that I did alright with writing this chapter out. Please leave a review and let me know what you think of this chapter. Reviews help me keep going when it comes to writing stories. I am hoping to have the next chapter out next week. I am currently trying to figure out when Everleigh will exit in this story, meaning in trying to end this story. I haven't quite decided yet. But hopefully I'll figure it out soon. Until next time.
