Disclaimer: I do not own One Piece or Bleach. Only the OC her best friend, and family are my creations along with their abilities. One Piece belongs to Eiichiro Oda, and Bleach to Tite Kubo. I did have this story on my main account but it doesn't seem to be working too well lately so I thought I'd try it on this one.

AN: The part of the story in italics is a vague recounting of an event that happened a few months before the main storyline.

The green light engulfed both of them. Both the genocidal traitor and the offspring he hadn't known about when he was captured. After two minutes of being engulfed by that light a large diamond shaped object fell out of the green radiating aura. The silvery haired girl moved quickly, snatching the item up and seemingly jumping off Sokyoku Hill.

As the on lookers, Lieutenants and Captains of their respective squads looked on, they realized they couldn't locate the girl. She'd taken the Hogyoku and had vanished somewhere. Where? Was she also planning a genocide as the traitor once had? Their attention quickly turned back to the now disgraced traitor and his son as they realized that he had dealt a serious injury to his child. They rushed the former fifth squad Captain while the current fourth squad Captain went to the boy and began tending to his injuries.

The sixth squad Captain looked to his Elite Lieutenant, a woman with similar white hair to the girl. His slate grey eyes met her indigo blue and silently they came to an agreement. The girl wasn't a traitor. The Hogyoku couldn't be destroyed, but as long as it was kept out of the Traitor's possession, there was a chance of avoiding another disaster like the Winter War that had occurred before she or the boy were part of the organization. The two of them may not have participated in the war, but they were acutely aware of it as it had been relayed to them by those who had.

There was one other thing; she and the son of the traitor had sworn an oath upon graduation. An oath to be willing to give their lives for the sake of humanity. If that meant she got branded as a threat to reduce the risk the traitor posed to humanity, both knew that she would take that chance for the greater good. However, the sixth squad Captain was skeptical that she was taking such a risk.

They had only been off Sixis for three weeks, but already they had gained a few new members and chosen a name for their crew. They were currently sitting in a restaurant and despite being pirates nobody seemed to be paying them much attention.

The little hole in the wall business seemed to be just operating as normal until a panicked cry tore through the otherwise cheerful establishment.

"He's choking!"

The patrons all seemed to freeze at the declaration. Ace turned to see a woman frantically patting a boy's back. Suddenly the boy's coughing ceased and no sound came from him. He was still reaching for his throat, and his mouth was open. His tongue protruding out periodically, eyes wide with fear.

Ace wished he could help but he had no idea what to do. Silently a girl, roughly 15 yrs of age, approached the woman and child. She grasped the woman's wrist and gently moved it away from the boy's back. She then knelt down positioning herself directly behind the child. She wrapped her arms around the boy, half way between his chest and stomach. She made a fist, he noticed her thumb knuckle as sticking out, this was the fist she placed against the boy's body, then cupped her fist with her other hand. She made three jerking motions, pushing in, then up with her hands. On the third motion a piece of meat flew from the child's mouth and he retched a bit but he then began coughing and taking large gulps of air into his lungs. The woman instantly hugged the boy tightly to her. The girl stepped back letting the mother hold her son for a moment. Ace took this moment really take in her appearance. She had a pale complexion, he couldn't quite see the colour of her eyes from where he was sitting. She was currently wearing a pair of dark shorts that came down to her mid thigh, a sleeveless red button up top, black sandals and what out of place a red scarf that she wore around her neck. He noticed it was gently secured with a loose knot.

'Weirdo, but she does seem to know her stuff,' he thought to himself.

The teenager moved away, quietly saying something to the woman as she left the restaurant, seemingly oblivious to the cheering that had erupted in the restaurant. Ace swallowed the mouthful of meat that he had been chewing as he shot up from his seat and chased after the girl out of the restaurant . Once he'd left the building he looked straight ahead and didn't see any sign of the girl. He looked left, right, then left again, not catching a single glance of the young woman. He turned to go back in and a wisp of silvery blonde hair caught his eye. He deviated from going back into the building and bolted after the quiet girl. She clearly knew what she'd been doing when that boy had been choking but why? Was she a nurse? A doctor? Could she join them?

He approached her and reached out for her, only to be surprised as the girl spun, grasping his wrist before his hand could make contact with her shoulder. Ace gasped in surprise at her reflexes. Her steel grey eyes were looking at him with a fierceness he'd only seen in the wild tigers back on Colobu.

He stood still as her gaze bore into him as if looking straight through to his soul, after what seemed like an eternity of the unbearable silence he finally found his voice, asking her, "join our crew?"

Her physical expression didn't alter, but the intensity of her gaze lessened as did her grip on his wrist. If it wasn't for his Logia body he'd likely have a bruise from how hard she was gripping him. Yes, logically he could've used his Logia body to escape her grasp, but that would also risk burning her, or even worse intimidating her. Burns could heal with little time and treatment, but intimidation could linger for years. He didn't want her afraid of him, he wanted her to ally with him.

She kept her eyes locked on his for a while longer before stating, "you're a pirate. I thought as much."

He felt his cheeks flush a little, was it the sound of her voice or how easily she picked up on his status as a Pirate? At the moment he wasn't too certain. It was oddly flattering to him that she could tell that easily. He gave a smile as he replied, "yeah. I'm Portgas D. Ace, Captain of the Spade Pirates."

This guy had basically dubbed himself the Ace of Spades, she couldn't help but think how strange that was.

"Rina," was her simple reply. He felt his stomach flutter a little as she spoke and that confirmed it for him, her voice was enough to make him blush. He had an intense physical crush on this girl, having her as the ship's doctor would be a bit difficult.

He decided he could push it aside though and focus on their upcoming adventures. Still, there was something that he had to address, "how'd you know what to do to help that kid? Are you a Doctor? A nurse?"

"More like the second eldest of numerous siblings and cousins," she divulged. This made him sweat drop. He'd been awe struck by her and assumed she had some kind of medical training. She then added, "but I do love to read. My Dad's a scientist and my mother has a science background as well—so I know a few things. Some natural remedies, and such."

He smiled and reiterated, "join our crew. We need someone with your knowledge."

The girl hesitated for a moment before nodding in agreement however she had a few conditions of her own, "however—I can leave your crew whenever I wish. I'll teach someone else what I know so that when I leave they can take over for me."

This made him curious but he wasn't about to nitpick at anything that allowed him to be closer to this mysterious beauty. He gave her a smile and nodded in agreement, with a condition of his own, "get a flaming spade tattooed on you and I'll agree to those terms."

The girl seemed confused for a moment before recalling the name of the pirate crew: the spade pirates. She looked to him and asked, "why a flaming spade of all things?"

Ace smirked a little as he held up his fist to the side like he was going to fist pump the air, then his fist gave away to flames. The girl's eyes widened momentarily, as if quickly coming to the realization and as her eyes narrowed she stated, "you ate the flare-flare fruit."

The flames discipated and he inquired, "You know about Devil Fruit?"

Rina courtly answered, "I know eating them grants you unusual abilities, at the expense of never being able to swim again. Water would make you exhausted. So I'm puzzled as to why a Pirate Captain would risk such a thing?"

"I was on a desolate island, I hadn't eaten in a long time and that was the only food I could find," he explained.

'Well, that logic is sound. If you're at risk of starvation, stave off starvation and deal with any consequences later,' Rina admitted to herself. She offered a small smile. He shoved a hand into one of his pockets and offered the other to her with a broad toothy smile plastered on his face. She gave a relaxed smile as she accepted his hand, walking by his side as they headed back towards the rest of the crew.

"So, what kind of food do you like?"

He figured the question was impersonal enough to not send up any red flags, but still enough to get to know his new crew member a little. "I'm Pescaterian," was her nonchalant reply.

He arched a brow slightly. He glanced at her from the corner of his eye while asking, "Pesca-what?"

"It means I'll eat fish, vegetables, fruit and grains, but I don't eat meat," she answered as they walked. He smirked a little and mused, "you and my little brother would not get along."

She caught on and jested, "I'm guessing your brother is a carnivore?"

"Practically a T-rex," Ace played along. He glanced at her and added, "So I know what you won't eat… but say you had the wrost possible day imaginable—you really don't want to eat. I don't like any of my crew going off their food, so in that case what should I make sure we have for you?"

'Whoa. I only just agreed to join his crew and he's already worrying about that? Hmm—if only all humans were this kind,' she thought to herself.

"Strawberries, or some kind of spicy noodles," she answered. A thought dawned on her and she looked to him before asking, "how old are you anyway?"

"Seventeen," was his immediate answer. Rina managed to hide her shock at the age, but he seemed to catch on that something was a bit off. He then offered, "but I turn eighteen in five months."

"Hmm," was her response, while mentally she was berating herself for accepting help from somebody this young. If things went wrong, his life would be forfit, and she'd have to live with the knowledge that her shortcomings lead to it.
