Smurfocalypse Chapter 35: The False Smurf Part 4
As Farmer was hauling Modest Smurf to the docks to imprison him in the brig Timber was on his way to get Brainy at the library. Meanwhile at the library Doctor was rushed to where Papa Smurf lay and the sight nearly drove Doctor to tears. However the good doctor did not allow his emotions to overcome him. He calmly sat his bag onto the ground and unzipped it to retrieve some thick wool padding which he used to put pressure on the stab wounds to stop the bleeding.
"I have to stop the bleeding… Lucky for all of us he didn't lose too much blood just yet." Doctor said as he applied pressure to the wounds.
"Is he going to make it Doctor?" Brainy asked.
"Hard to say right now… but Smurfness I hope so." Doctor said as a single tear went down his cheek.
As Doctor worked on Papa Smurf, Timber entered the library and approached the sad scene.
"Timber! Did Hefty catch Modest? He needs to be punished for what he's done!" Brainy said.
"Modest has been placed under arrest." Timber said.
"Wow you guys act quick. So what are you going to do with him?" Brainy asked.
As they were talking Doctor was able to stop the bleeding, and was beginning to examine the seriousness of the wounds as Timber continued.
"We actually don't have enough evidence to prove he is guilty." Timber said.
"Timber Timber Timber. Every Smurf knows it was Modest that did this. What are you saying that you think I could have done this?" Brainy asked.
"I personally am on your side. However that doesn't change that I was sent here to put you under arrest by Hefty." Timber said.
"M-Me?! Under arrest?! Surely you're kidding me right?" Brainy asked.
"I'm truly sorry Brainy… I know your innocent, but Hefty wants to make a hundred percent sure first." Timber said.
"This is an outrage! I would NEVER hurt Papa Smurf, or any Smurf for that matter!" Brainy said.
"Please put your hands behind your back…" Timber said as he grabbed a rope he had brought with him.
Timber tied Brainy's arms together and held him by the shoulder.
"I'm so sorry Brainy." Timber said.
"Y-You just wait until Papa Smurf hears about this! He'll be so angry!" Brainy said as he was lead out of the library by Timber to the docks.
Doctor was alone in the library with Papa Smurf now to finish treating him. He just decided to perform treatment on the spot instead of trying to move him. Working quickly, Doctor stitched up Papa Smurf's wounds, and returned the rest of his supplies to his bag.
"I've done all I know how… I just hope it's enough." Doctor said.
Back at the house Hefty was getting ready to leave to search for any amount of evidence he could find.
"Falconer I want you to come with me. We're going to search the town for clues." Hefty said.
"What sort of clues?" Falconer asked.
"We need to find the weapon. That's how we will know who really did this." Hefty said.
"I don't follow you. I thought you said Brainy doesn't carry weapons." Falconer said.
"He doesn't." Hefty said.
"Then you're blaming Modest!" Falconer said.
"I'm not blaming any Smurf." Hefty said
Falconer still wasn't so sure himself who it was either, and ended up accompanying Hefty on his investigation.
Meanwhile at the docks Farmer and Timber took Modest and Brainy to the human sized brig which had bars they could clearly escape from, but were forced inside.
"So what's going to stop me from escaping huh?" Modest asked.
Timber glared at Modest and struck the floor boards with his wood cutting axe as hard as he could leaving a huge crack in it.
"That!" Timber said.
Modest and Timber exchanged glares as Brainy just walked to the back of his cell and sat.
"How long do we have to be here?" Brainy asked.
"Just until we can figure things out." Farmer said.
"Farmer why don't you head back to the house? Let me take guard duty." Timber said.
"Aye, I be on me way then." Farmer said as he left the ship.
The rest of the afternoon was spent looking for the clue Hefty knew he needed to prove Brainy innocent. Hefty and Falconer searched all over town and found nothing until they searched the area near the cemetery. There was a tall oak growing near the wall. Note that the cemetery is located to the far right of the house the Smurfs are currently staying nearest to the eastern wall of the town. They were a decent distance away from the house. However, Hefty and Falconer came across some disturbed dirt under the oak. Upon investigating they found Modest's knife still wet with Papa Smurf's blood.
"A Kitchen knife… The only Smurf here who carries those is Chef." Hefty said.
"Right, and Chef was with us at the meeting all day." Falconer said.
"As was Brainy. He never once excused himself from the meeting or left the living room where we wouldn't have been able to see him. Until he left the house with Papa Smurf." Hefty said.
"So… Then Modest really did it huh?" Falconer asked.
"I know it might be hard for you to believe, but yes." Hefty said.
"There has to be some sort of catch… Some sort of mistake." Falconer said.
"What do you mean?" Hefty asked.
"I mean… For a peaceful Smurf to lash out like that. Something isn't right." Falconer said.
"Either way we need to settle this issue and get Brainy out of the brig. Why don't you go back to the house and let the others know what we've learned. I'm going to pay a visit to Modest." Hefty said.
While Falconer went off to the house Hefty went down to the docks located north of town. He entered the ship and approached the cells taking out the knife.
"Does this look familiar to either of you?" Hefty asked holding up the knife by the blade.
"A Kitchen knife? Hefty Hefty Hefty only Chef carries kitchen knives." Brainy said.
"Right, that's what I was thinking too until I found this buried near the cemetery." Hefty said.
Modest was saying nothing, but was glaring at Hefty. He knew he messed up and that it was only a matter of time before he was caught. Hefty didn't mess around any further, but instead just cut to the chase.
"You're in a lot of trouble Modest." Hefty said.
Modest's glare and scowl turn to an evil grin and he began to laugh much to the confusion of the Smurf's present.
"It doesn't matter now. With Papa Smurf dead there is nobody on this planet that can challenge Lord Balthazar!" Modest screamed.
"Lord Balthazar?" Brainy asked.
"Traitor!" Hefty shouted.
"And you fools just let me right in like I owned the place! Some knights you all are!" Modest screamed as he continued to laugh almost hysterically.
While this was hard for everyone Timber in particular had had enough and beginning to lose control of his emotions. He felt a rage building inside him as Modest mocked them and laughed at them, and like a flame this rage grew until he finally snapped. Timber gritted his teeth and grabbed his woodcutting axe and stepped into the cells with it raised in the air. Much to Hefty and Brainy's horror Timber swung his axe as hard as he could and hit Modest right in the forehead the blade sinking into his skull. The Smurf's eyes rolled behind his head and he fell dead, but Timber wasn't finished. He continued to hack away at Modest's corpse as though he were chopping logs on a tree stump. He swung and he swung and swung the body becoming less and less recognizable as he screamed every obscenity he knew in a thick Smurf accent, tears rolling down his eyes as he screamed. It was as though the fury of every Smurf in the port had been transferred into Timber.
Finally Hefty collected himself and stepped in to stop him, grabbing his axe from his hands.
"That's enough Timber!" Hefty said.
Out of the dead Smurf's broken skull wriggled a creature neither of them had seen before, but the sight of it made them almost sick. It probably had thousands of legs, was a skin colored tan, and was shaped like a caterpillar but had a large head.
"What… is that?" Brainy asked.
