Smurfocalypse chapter 62: Memorial Day Part 3
Brainy was just as appreciative of the knights and their efforts as the other Smurfs, but while all the other Smurfs were having a good time together and celebrating the knight's recent victory over the black hearted Brainy sat alone. All he could do is watch the others have fun with one another as he nursed a mug of sarsaparilla at a picnic bench. No Smurf had stopped by to talk to him at all since the event began, and Brainy was understandably lonely. It was during times like this where he missed Papa Smurf and Clumsy more than ever. Annoying as Clumsy was at times, he was always there to provide a listening ear when all the other Smurfs wanted nothing to do with anything he said, or any books he might recommend. Brainy sighed deeply and put his hands on his face. The intelligent Smurf was having a rough time. Brainy still had some growing up to do as did his peers. He still couldn't piece together why no Smurf wanted anything to do with him unless it was work related. He sat there feeling sorry for himself until finally Alchemist approached him.
"Brainy there you are. I've been looking all over for you." Alchemist said as he approached the bench holding the leftover potions.
In the background Timber could be seen staring longingly at the alluring sparkling blue liquid.
"I'm not exactly hard to find…" Brainy said adjusting his glasses.
Brainy had a point, but Alchemist had a good excuse for not being able to find Brainy at first. Alchemist had been very busy working and studying most of the day, and did not have time to track Brainy's every move.
"We have to dispose of these quickly… I see the knights staring. If they give in to the temptation and drink another one of these the magic will be too much for their body to handle, and we will be in a lot of trouble if the knights are not fighting fit by the time the demons come back." Alchemist said.
"So why not just dump them down your chemical sink?" Brainy asked.
"My sink leads to the ocean, and it's dangerous to dump potions down the drain. It creates what Papa Smurf describes in his book as Magic Pollution." Alchemist said.
"Magic pollution?" Brainy asked.
"It's a very dangerous and unpredictable form of pollution. Think of it as a body of water imbued with the magic of many potions of various effects. Contact with the water could mean any number of things, and magic pollution is difficult to remove from the environment." Alchemist said.
"So then it's basically one big concoction of unpredictable effects." Brainy said.
"Exactly." Alchemist said.
"So what do you want me to do?" Brainy asked.
"I was hoping there would be something you learned from reading Papa Smurf's magic book that could help." Alchemist said.
"Why not just hide the potions in Papa Smurf's hut? We're the only Smurfs with keys." Brainy said.
"You really think something as simple as a lock and a wooden door would stop the knights from entering the hut? Come on Brainy your smarter than that." Alchemist said.
"It just seems like a waste to throw it out." Brainy said.
"Are you going to help me or not?" Alchemist asked.
"I can. Papa Smurf has a spell that returns potions back just being raw ingredients. It's a reverse alchemy spell, but the ingredients lose some of their potency." Brainy said.
"So I can get back my ingredients. That sounds Smurfy. I could actually use that every day with my experiments." Alchemist said.
"It's a higher level spell, and I haven't tried it out yet obviously. I'm not magic like you and Papa Smurf, but if I say the incantations just right most of the spells in the book work anyway." Brainy said.
"I knew I could count on you." Alchemist said.
"Yes, well I mean… You did?" Brainy said.
"Well yeah of course. That's why Papa Smurf trusted you with the magic book." Alchemist said.
"Come back to my hut. We'll sort things out there in private." Brainy said.
"Sounds good." Alchemist said.
Alchemist and Brainy returned to the village to go back to Brainy's hut and deconstruct the addicting potions in private using the event as a distraction. While Brainy and Alchemist worked together as a team just as Papa Smurf wanted Dreamy was stuck in bed at Doctor's clinic.
Dreamy was in a lot of pain. The pain in his right side was so intense it was bringing involuntary tears to his eye. The tears trickled down his face along with sweat soaking the pillow case of the pillow he laid on. His saving grace was when Doctor gave him a shot for the pain.
"Now this painkiller is supposedly the best the human world currently has to offer. You should finally be able to get some sleep, but I want you off that leg until the nerves heal." Doctor said.
Dreamy looked to his iron leg which was propped up against the wall.
"How long will I be here?" Dreamy asked.
"No telling for sure… Until I can find out whats wrong with you you'll be staying with me for quite some time." Doctor said.
Coconuts Smurfday is next month, and Dreamy wanted to be healthy enough to spend some time with her. However there was no telling what was wrong with Dreamy given his unique situation. He could very well be at the end of his life for all Doctor knows.
"I'm telling you it's all those gadgets and gizmos Handy put in you that's messing with your health… I told him to take his tools and go." Doctor said.
"If not for Handy and you I never would have made it to Smurfberry Island… I would have never met Witch Doctor, Mango, and Coconut… My friends, my crew. How will they take this?" Dreamy asked.
Doctor walked over to the window and opened the curtains before deeply sighing.
"I don't know Dreamy… I wish I could do more I really do. You're lucky to even be alive at all after the stunt you pulled in the forest." Doctor said.
"I had to save Coconut… She means the world to me. I had to save her life even if it costed me my own." Dreamy said.
"Your relationship with Coconut is troubling the other Smurfs Dreamy… Remember she is a Smurfling no matter how mature she is." Doctor said.
"There is no relationship between us. We are just friends." Dreamy said.
"Pain in the right side… You only have one kidney left Dreamy. When it dies I'm afraid you will too, and then there's the matter of your heart. That heart attack you suffered after your fight with Captain Pepper put a heavy strain on your body. You're putting way to much stress on your body Dreamy. If you don't stop at this rate you won't make it to summer." Doctor said.
Dreamy was silent as he listened to Doctor's advice. Dreamy couldn't deny he was dying. It was a cruel fate indeed. Dreamy still had so much he wanted to do, and with his skills Port Saint Smurf could have connections to the islands. The Tribesmurfs could be persuaded to trade them fruit for whatever It is they need, but it is unrealistic to assume Dreamy will ever sail again. As the day came to a close Dreamy watched the sunset from the open window, and then went to sleep. Outside the Smurfs with the exception of Doctor were busy cleaning up after Memorial Day. There was still so much work for them all to do in order to make Port Saint Smurf a safe place to live.
