The Smurfocalypse Chapter 64: Hospital Visit
The only Smurfs not able to see off the knights this morning were Doctor and Dreamy. Doctor has been awake most of the night monitoring Dreamy's condition and making sure he wasn't in pain. Doctor hasn't even been to his actual hut which was next door to the clinic and across the street from the well in the center of town in over twenty four hours. His doctor's clinic which he has requested be separate from his actual home was a short walk next door. Inside the clinic were several beds for patients, and the only one full was for Dreamy who has bedridden since Memorial Day, and in pain since his fight in the forest. Dreamy was enjoying breakfast in bed the best he could while Doctor checked his vitals with a stethoscope.
"Feeling better this morning Dreamy? I notice you can sit up alright now." Doctor said.
"It doesn't hurt as much anymore, but I'm still feeling the pain in the nerves where my iron leg goes." Dreamy said.
"That's because you have metal in you there. The gears that allow you to walk with that leg are probably grinding against your actual skin on the inside." Doctor said.
"Like what happened with my arm…" Dreamy said.
"I'm going to be real with you for a moment Dreamy… You may never walk again." Doctor said.
Dreamy frowned and looked down into his cereal.
"But that doesn't mean you still won't be able to get around. I can put in a work order for a wheelsmurfer like the one Handy built Hefty when he broke his leg." Doctor said.
"Doesn't that require two hands to operate?" Dreamy asked.
"Aye…" Doctor said.
"So I just have to be a burden to every Smurf for the rest of my life? I'll need some Smurf to push me around?" Dreamy asked.
Doctor pushed his hand against his forehead and pressed his thumb just under his cheekbones while lowering his head as though visibly frustrated.
"I'm afraid so Dreamy…" Doctor said.
It was then Doctor and Dreamy heard a knock on the door to the clinic. Doctor answered the door, and the living members of Dreamy's crew were outside, all of them from Alchemist to Duck. Psychiatrist was there as well as Doctor wanted a second opinion from another doctor, and Psychiatrist used to be a doctor of the medical kind like Doctor Smurf. A Doctor from a big city perhaps has more experience in his trade than the small village doctor. It was just something Doctor was thinking.
"We're here to see out captain." Navigator said with a smile.
"He's just finishing up breakfast. Come on in and have a seat anywhere." Doctor said.
Mango fastened Duck's lead to the handrail of Doctor's porch before stepping inside with the others. Duck had just enough space on his lead to waddle over to the open window and peek his head inside to see Dreamy.
"Dreamy we've been so worried about you. We came as soon as we had free time." Alchemist said.
Coconut walked up to the bed and put her tiny hands around Dreamy's hand.
"How are you feeling Dreamy?" Coconut asked looking up at Dreamy with her big youthful eyes.
"Don't worry Coconut. I feel much better now really." Dreamy said.
"There's still the matter of his leg though. I cannot in good conscience recommend he walk out of here on that contraption." Doctor said.
"We'll get you a wheelsmurfer captain. Everything will be alright… We'll take turns spending time with you and make sure you can get around. Won't we guys?" Navigator said.
The entire crew including Duck nodded.
"Anything for you Dreamy. You just name it we'll do it for you." Architect said.
"Yeah don't be afraid to come to us for help." Fisher said.
"Just like on the open sea. We are your true blue crew through and through." Mango said.
The Smurfs nodded in agreement.
"That means a lot to me Smurfs... I was worried I'd be a burden." Dreamy said.
"You could never burden us Dreamy. We are forever in your debt. You saved our lives after all." Fisher said.
"If not for you I'd still be a friendless hermit wallowing in my own pain and loneliness…" Mango said.
"And my entire tribe would have been wiped out had you not come to save me." Coconut said.
"And the red-eyed Smurfs of The Island of Big Snakes would have made us into snake food." Fisher said.
"You never gave up on us, and we'll never give up on you captain." Navigator said.
Psychiatrist walked up to Doctor and held out his hand for the stethoscope.
"May I?" Psychiatrist asked.
"By all means. That's why I invited you here." Doctor said.
Psychiatrist was dressed for work once again. The Smurfs typically all wore the same outfits except for Psychiatrist and Secretary that seemed to have quite a few different outfits. Today he was in his fancy suit that he was in when he joined the village, and had a black bowler hat covering his bald head. He took the stethoscope and walked over to Dreamy placing it on his bare back.
"I want you to take deep breaths." Psychiatrist said.
The crew watched as Psychiatrist moved the stethoscope to different places on Dreamy's back listening and nodding his head as he changed the position of the scope.
"Your lungs seem to be working just Smurfy." Psychiatrist said.
He then moved the stethoscope to Dreamy's heart and listened in, nodding his head a second time.
Psychiatrist then lifted the blankets to reveal the red stump where Handy had put some metal parts under the skin to cooperate with his iron prosthetic. Psychiatrist walked over to a bucket of water with a bar of soap next to it.
"May I Doctor?" Psychiatrist asked.
"Go for it." Doctor said.
Psychiatrist dunked the soap into the bucket of water and washed his hands thoroughly before drying them off. He then walked back over to Dreamy.
"This is going to hurt a bit…" Psychiatrist said.
Psychiatrist pressed his fingers hard against the wound and Dreamy winced as Psychiatrist deeply felt around the area. His fingers finally brushed against the gears inside Dreamy's body.
"Give him something to bite down on…" Psychiatrist said.
Doctor immediately stuffed a towel into Dreamy's mouth almost making him gag. Psychiatrist then pushed against the gears inside Dreamy's skin and tried to get them to rotate causing Dreamy to scream and chomp down on the towel.
"Oh yeah, they're grinding against the skin. We'll either have to take them out of you, or you'll have to stop putting pressure on that leg either way you're not walking again." Psychiatrist said.
"So what's the reason I was peeing blood then?" Dreamy asked.
"You must have damaged your kidney in the fight somehow. Either that or you have a kidney stone, but we're a bit young to be getting those especially with our healthy diets." Psychiatrist said.
"I'm going to recommend you stay with me at least until you can get your wheelsmurfer." Doctor said.
"We can still come see him any time right?" Alchemist asked.
"Of course. I'll fix your captain up the best I can, and he'll be back out of here." Doctor said.
"That's great news Dreamy." Coconut said.
"Yes… I suppose it is." Dreamy said.
"I'll take down the stairs on your porch and replace it with a ramp so we can get you in and out of the hut." Coconut said.
"Sounds like I could use a ramp here at the clinic for wheelsmurfer bound patients." Doctor said.
"I'll build one here too then." Coconut said, her voice cracking as she spoke.
Dreamy's vitals were doing alright given his condition, and after screwing around with his wound Doctor gave him another shot for the pain. The crew was relieved Dreamy was going to be alright, and they were going to take care of him for the rest of his life to make sure he was comfortable and that he could participate in village life. Dreamy Smurf was in good hands, and this brought warm smiles to the face of his beloved crew.
I appreciate you coming by Psychiatrist…" Doctor said.
'Oh no problem Doctor. Anytime. I like working with you." Psychiatrist said.
The good doctors shook hands and the Smurfs left the clinic
