The winter with eyes and the spring with hatching
Hiccups POV:
I was currently looking at the images the dragon eye was projecting against the wall of my dragon nests. It was amazing since it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. I looked it over as I said.
"This is incredible! It has maps I've never seen, writing in that same strange language from the dragon researchers journal, Dragons I don't recognize! This shows there's a bigger world out there than I thought. This world must be explored." I turned to the nests that held my dragons. "Guys we've got a lot of work to do but for tonight get some rest!" They all peered down at me from their nests before going back in to rest. I walked out and found my animals waiting for me.
"Guys we've got a lot of work to do tomorrow!" They just growled or screeched at that before I walked past them to get to my bedroom so I could have a fresh start in the morning.
Next morning
I had gotten up early so I could get started on the dragon eye. I was now in my library with my dragons waiting around it ready to give me low burn from whatever they used to defend themselves. I was sitting on a chair in front of one of my wooden tables in front of a gap in the shelves where the only thing showing was the cave wall that I had smoothed down. On the table was the dragon eye, the three lenses I found with the dead guy, a cup of water in case I got thirsty and a basket of fish was sitting by the table to thank my dragons for their help. I was studying the different lenses that were in the dragon eye and found that without the dragon eye you can't use them even if you use a dragon flame. I found out that the lenses had ways to trap dragons, dragon classes and dragon species with info on the dragon along with maps to different islands where you can find these dragons. As I was studying it I couldn't keep the smile off my face since this just opened up a whole new world of dragons to me. I spent the entire morning studying the dragon eye lenses had to offer me. When I was done with the lenses that were in the eye I knew I'd have to make a case to store these lenses safely to avoid damaging them. I was now about to see what information the lenses that I found with the dead man had.
I lifted one of them up and looked through the glass as I asked to no one in particular.
"What mysteries does this lens hold?"
I put it in the dragon eye and had Toothless give me a low burn and what I found took my breath away. It had four sections each on a different alpha dragon species. I went through all of them finding a boulder class called a screaming death, the Foreverwing, the Bewilderbeast and a cousin of the Reddeath called the Greendeath. I smiled and looked at Toothless and said.
"Bud we have a three alpha species to find but no rush. We've got all the time in the world."
He growled and nodded before I moved on to the next lens. At first I didn't understand what it was since it wasn't any dragon or trap but then I saw that it was instructions on how to build the dragon eye and lenses.
"I am going to be busy in the forge for a long time!"
The last one was the most interesting one of all though as it didn't contain any information on dragons, the dragon eye, ways to trap them but a journal entry that went.
'To whomever
If you are reading this then you have found the device, which allows the wielder to unlock the hidden information of the lenses. The device never was named so you may name it if you wish but know that it was my Great, great, great grandfather who designed it for my tribe so we would be able to safely store the knowledge of the dragons we know of and how to hunt them and it was my family that the duty of recording information of the dragons on the lenses and keeping the secret of how to construct these devices fell upon. There once was a time where I wished to be like my fellow tribesman and kill dragons for profit on the market but as time went on I began to notice the true beauty of these magnificent creatures. I tried turning some of my fellow tribe members to my way of thinking but they laughed in my face and it was that action that drove me to leave my tribe with the device and all of its lenses on one of the ships my tribe used to hunt dragons where I hoped they would never find it. Even with the device safely hidden away I felt that it wasn't enough to just hide the device so I have hidden the lenses all across the archipelago so the hunter might never be able to use them against any dragons. After they were hidden I continued my quest to gather information on the alpha species of dragon as they had always interested me and were the one thing I desired to know more about. This duty now falls upon you reader. Please continue my lives work and gather all the knowledge you can on the alpha species and don't let this knowledge fall into the wrong hands especially those of the Grimborn clan as they are the heads of the dragon hunters. Should you encounter them be warned they are trained to be ruthless and cunning from birth.
Auden Ausger'
It ended with what I'm guessing was their tribal crest that looked like a closed fist coming down on something. I sighed reading how this guy might have been an outcast among his own people made me realize that me and him weren't so different but there was no point dwelling in the past but look to the future because I had big plans.
three months later
It has been three months since I found the dragon eye and I've been busy. For starters my dragons and me had prepared for devastating winter, which arrived about two months ago. The one month before was spent preparing for it such as building a large low dome made of glass with a gronkle iron skeleton holding it all in place (AN:Like a low profile greenhouse dome acting as a roof) over the cove my garden was in to keep the plants from freezing to death and that took a week to complete but I knew it would pay off in the end. Enlarging the cold room so we could store more food and collecting a ton of fish to last us all through the winter. Another thing I did was make a door to the ocean entrance which dropped down from the ceiling so no cold could get in through the entrance but I made sure to build a large hole at the bottom that lets the water in and so my Tidal classes could come and go as they pleased and chase fish into the cave in case we ran low on food. I also took the liberty of stocking up on firewood so we'd be able to keep the fires going even though my dragons to help keep the place warm but it doesn't hurt to be safe. Finally, my animals have given birth to their young so my livestock has grown giving me the need to enlarge their paddocks.
As for the Dragon eye, I've spent the past two months sorting everything out like how I built a few cases for the lenses each built the same design but with different colored cases with golden plates in the shape a dragon class symbol with the name underneath it on top of the lids. Each held the lenses that had the info on a dragon that fell under that class and there was another case with the maps in them. The inside of the cases had holes in them shaped and sized to fit the lenses, small straps that didn't touch the glass lens so they didn't scratch them while they held them down and kept the lenses from bumping around in their cases and below each hole was a small plaque with the name of the dragon the lens had information also the inside was lined with silk each a different color in each case. I had also constructed new dragon eyes but a little different in design and name.
The first of my new dragon eyes was one I named the cats eye! The difference between the dragon eye and the cats eye for starters was the head of the dragon eye was shaped like a dragon with ruby eyes while the cats eyes head was shaped like a cat with emerald eyes and the symbols going around the pipe of the cats eye and on the switches on the end were different to those of the dragon eye. I had made lenses for this one describing felines but only had lenses for cougars and of course my jaguars so far which rested in their own case made the same way as the dragon eye lenses cases except there was a large cats head shaped plate made of copper (AN:Like the cat the sword projects on Thundercats!) on the top of the lid instead of the dragon class.
There is also the one I named 'The canines eye'! This one had a wolf's head with sapphire eyes at the front and like the cats eye different symbols on the tube and switches. The lenses for this one only had a wolf lens so far but I knew there were other species of wild canines out there since I read about them but I wanted to study them first hand before I made a lens for them. The case had wolves head made of silver on the top glaring at those in front of it.
Then there is the one I named 'The birds' eye'! This one had the head of an eagle and different markings on the tube and switches like the others. The lenses so far consisted of the birds of the Mayan jungle and the birds from the local islands. On top of the case was a plate made of bronze shaped like a bird with its wings spread out.
Finally there is the apes' eye! This one had the head of a monkey and like the others different symbols on its tube and switches. The lenses I had so far were just for Capuchin monkeys and night monkeys and the lens case had the picture of a monkey head made of dark iron. All of the cases that hold the lenses now rest next to each other in a glass case in a new room I made for studying the info these eyes have. The room was a square room and I had smoothed the cave walls so I could have an easier time reading the stuff and the door to the room was made of gronkle iron and locked tight with a lock only my stone of good fortune could open up.
Another thing that has happened is I built a new room with a model of Berk and its surrounding islands and when I say model I mean a full model of the village the way it looks along with everything on this island like the cove, mountains and forest. This would allow me to plan things out a bit better should Berk go to war I'll be able to strategize a way to fight back easier. This did take me a while to construct but I had plenty of time on my hands being stuck in here during devastating winter, which always comes with major blizzards.
Presently I was in my private room sitting in my chair with a cup of water in my hand looking out the window as the wind blew the snow past it as it howled outside. I took a sip of my water and said.
"Looks like quite a blizzard out there today. Everyone in the village must be stuck up in the Great hall with this weather. Looks like one of the worst and it must be killing poor Bucket since when a storm comes his bucket titans and causes him pain!" I took another sip of my water. "Reminds me of the Blizzard of Olaf. Took us a week to dig Mildew out and I'm still wondering why we even bothered to dig that old goat out when all he does is complain, complain and complain!"
I put my cup down and walked downstairs. I rubbed Ah Tabai's head as I passed him. Another thing that had changed was he and his sister had been growing and being trained to help around the lair and hunt like their species does. Ikan now was mostly out of his cage flying around and normally caught his own food by grabbing one of the fish that swam into the water entrance. I have been training him to catch messenger pigeons so I could intercept enemy messages.
I walked into the dragon eye room, took out the dragon eye and as I looked at it I said.
"I know how to make you easily now but you still hold many secrets and I will discover them!"
To be honest I hadn't really had that much time to truly study all the lenses of the dragon eye besides the ones I found on Auden Ausger. I had spent most of my time after finding it preparing for devastating winter, designing and building the room that would allow me to study them better, building the new ones, designing the cases which held the lenses so they wouldn't damage the glass part of the lenses and so when I find a new lens I can simply press down on the inside to open a new slot for it, designing the door to the room where I stored the eyes and their lenses, drawing out the blueprints for the dragon eye and lenses so my dragons wouldn't have to keep giving me a low flame for them, categorizing them but that mostly consisted of me just taking quick glances at the images and not truly getting to study them and finally building the new eyes. Now that all was taken care of I was free to fully study the images. Now nothing was going to keep me from studying the knowledge that these lenses held and I intend to unlock every single secret these lenses so when devastating winter was over I'll be ready to set sail and find the new dragons in the new lands.
Two months later
Devastating winters end was one more month away and when it came it means I'll be able to leave my cave again as the ice will crack. In the past two months I have made some major breakthroughs with the dragon eye. I've found the name of Berg, Shard, Blizzard and Zap and rays species were called groncicle for Berg, shivertooth for Shard, Woolly howl for Blizzard and Seashocker for Zap and Ray! I've also found multiple new species of dragons, found new locations and new recipe for dragon proof materials Coal can make. When I found the recipe I was glad I stocked up on different rocks for my rock-eating dragons so I was able to make the material immediately and was surprised by the results. The metal coloring was green and sure enough it was dragon proof since I had all of my dragons blast it and not a scratch! I built an entire room with this metal covering the walls and floor with a cage door for new dragons that have been causing trouble like attacking the animals or other dragons. I had also been drawing up plans for new outposts for different environments that I could make on some of the islands whether their terrain be rocky, icy, forest filled etc. I will have the plans to make an outpost there. This is pretty much how I spend my time stuck in my lair since I can't enjoy an exploration with my dragons and animals and my final month I planned to spend planning out my journey to the great unknown where I could find new dragons.
One month later
I woke up in bed and raised my arms stretching out as I let out a yawn then remembered what day it was. Today was the first day of spring! I immediately hopped out of bed waking a sleeping Snowflake up in the process before I ran up to my bedroom window and smiled at the sight of the sun shining across the ocean as I said.
"Hello Thaw!"
I smiled at the sight before I got my armor on and ran downstairs with a smile. As soon as I got downstairs I ran up to the crank that opened the gates to the ocean entrance letting some big waves wash in as I gave a big sniff as I smiled and said.
"Smell that salty ocean air!"
I loved the end of devastating winter since it meant I could get out into the world again without being killed in a blizzard. It also meant that Snotlout and the twins were no longer able to throw snow covered rocks at me, burry me in snow and try to get me trapped in avalanche. I shook my head to get rid of those memories and thought of what the end of winter meant for me now. It meant I could go sailing again, I won't have to bundle up with so many fur blankets at night and I could play with my animals in the sun again.
Afternoon
I was on my way to the grove with a book in hand to do some reading in the warm sunlight when Chac and Kisa ran in front of me and started bouncing around screeching. I kneeled down and said.
"What's up you two?"
They just ran into the hot spring room as I quickly followed. When I got inside I saw what they were freaking out about. The Bewilderbeat egg was shaking more than ever which meant it was about to hatch! I quickly stripped off my armor and jumped into the water as I gently sat the egg in my lap and rubbed its shell as I said.
"Come on little guy you got this!"
It was then I remembered that dragon eggs explode so I quickly put the egg down, got out of the water and made a break for the exit but as I reached the door I heard a small boom followed by clattering of eggshells. I turned around and felt a tear leave my eye at what I saw. swimming in the spring, which was now surrounded by broken eggshell pieces, was a newly hatched baby dragon. To describe it there were two stubby little horns on the side of its mouth, the face was covered with burr-like spikes, along with two lines of spikes above the eyes that looked like eyebrows, the back of the head has a mane-like frill coming out, a kings frill on the lower back of the head, a fish-like mouth, spines running down the back, beautiful glacier blue eyes and the most adorable little fins on the sides that were flapping. I slowly held my hands out as I walked up carful not to startle it. When it saw me it tilted its head in confusion in the most adorable way. I held my hands up and gently said.
"Hey there little one. Welcome to the world. I'm Hiccup a friend!"
It still looked confused before I slowly got into the hot spring so I was right in front of it and gently scratched its neck making it purr in content before climbing into my lap. I smiled and noticed that this Bewilderbest was a female.
"You're going to fit in just fine with our group."
She cuddled into my chest and purred. I smiled and gently rubbed her head. I then heard something at the entrance. I turned and found Toothless looking at us curiously. I smiled and gestured him over while saying.
"Hey bud come over here and meet the newest member of our family!" He walked over and sniffed the newborn that in turn buried her face deeper into my chest. I chuckled rubbed her head saying. "Hey it's okay he's a friend to." She pulled her head away from my chest and gave a gentle growl to Toothless who warbled back as I got up. "Now why don't we go and introduce you to the rest of the group?"
I got out of the hot spring as I held the Bewilderbeast in my arms. I slowly carried her outside where we proceeded to introduce her to the rest of the group. Once we got all the introductions out of the way and found that Sharpshot and the Bewilderbeast were the same size. I decided it was time to name her. I looked at her and said.
"Now what should we name you?" She looked at me with those precious little blue eyes, which held such confusion probably wondering what I meant. "Now what to call you?" She looked at me curiously before she blew frost in my face, which messed up my hair a bit. (AN: Like his hair when the Bewilderbeast blew frost into it in HTTYD 2) I chuckled and rubbed it off. "Sheesh when you grow up you'll be able to make glaciers with that breath of yours. I got it you'll be my little Glacia! You like that name?" She nuzzled my chest as I smiled and thought to myself. 'These next few weeks are going to be interesting!'
AN: Sorry for the short chapter but didn't know how to continue but hey you got more than one chapter posted so cut me some slack and please review!
