Chapter 107
Hiccups POV:
Toothless and I had just broken up the biggest dragon battle I'd ever seen in my life and when I say biggest dragon battle I meant that literally as it was a battle between multiple Alpha species that were the size of a mountain. I looked towards Berk and didn't need my eagle eye to see the massive crowd of Berkians who had all come out to see what had happened and at the front was none other than my father who was not looking happy. I let out a sigh and mentally told myself to get this over with now or else my dad was going to madder than ever but hopefully letting him know about the bazaar being opened today he might calm down a bit. I steered Toothless towards the crowd but he resisted and I couldn't blame him but I gave him a pat on the neck assuring him everything would be all right so he didn't resist anymore. We came to land at the front of the crowd before my dad ran forward as I dismounted and asked.
"Hiccup, are you alright?"
"I'm fine dad, I didn't get hurt in any way so there's no reason for you to worry."
"Well how do you expect me to react when my son just went up against the Midgard serpent?" His last words caught my attention.
"Midgard Serpent?"
"I'm talking about that giant purple beast your dragons just went up against and when did you get so many of them." I chuckled.
"Dad, that giant purple beast as you put it wasn't the Midgard serpent." I stopped chuckling. "It was a alpha species of dragon known as the purple death that until a few weeks ago was hibernating but woke up for some reason and as for when I got so many Alpha's well I got each of them from some adventure." I held up my fingers. "Glacia I found as an egg, Oceanica was the bewilderbeast from Berserker Island, Volcana was an egg I found when we were dealing with the Lavalouts and my Winters Wings is from my fight with the frost giants." He sighed.
"Hiccup one of these days you need to give me a fully written list of every dragon species you have along with a tour of your island again."
"You got it dad but for now I have a lot of work to do back on my island with everything that's going on along with helping the new alpha dragon settle in."
"Don't tell me you're thinking of keeping that beast Hiccup."
"I am going to keep him dad and there's nothing you can say to change my mind." I could tell he was about to protest but I held up my hand to stop him. "It's better to have the purple death here and under my control than out there and wild where nobody knows what it'll do if it comes across anyone who'd disturb its rest." He sighed and rubbed his eyes.
"I'll admit you have a point but are you sure you can control it."
"With my Alpha's I can at least try to keep it under control." He sighed.
"Just be careful Hiccup." I nodded before Gobber walked up.
"I hate to interrupt but you said you had other things going on back on your island." I nodded. "What exactly do you have going on lad?"
"A small group of dragon hunters who were able to escape us back after the battle on Berserker Island and have been trying to bring the dragon hunters back."
"And you've been trying to track them down." I shook my head.
"Didn't need to since they came to my island to try and capture me but they were easily dealt with and are now currently waiting in my dungeon." My dad then asked.
"Why were they coming after you?" Before I could reply he continued. "Were they looking for revenge?"
"That and apparently word in the archipelago spread fasts so people have been too afraid of becoming my enemy since word of me being a fierce warrior's spread so nobody's willing to do any form of business with them." I shrugged at the shocked looks on their faces. "It surprised me to but apparently it's true and they figured if they captured me then they'd be able to capture me then they'd be able to show everyone I was no threat, use me to capture all my dragons and take over my island." Gobber then said.
"Well if that's the case lad then be careful since there might be more people out there looking to put themselves up against a warrior like you."
"Don't worry Gobber, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to handle those kinds of people." He just nodded. "Now on a brighter note." I turned to the gathered crowd and announced. "THE BAZAAR IS BEING PREPARED TODAY AND WILL BE OPEN TOMORROW!" There were many cheers at this. "I EXPECT MANY OF YOU TO BE THERE AND REMEMBER TO RESPECT THE RULES OF THE BAZAAR BUT FOR NOW PLEASE GO AND INFORM THOSE IN HIDING THAT THE PURPLE DEATH HAS BEEN DEALT WITH AND WON'T BE ANY TROUBLE AGAIN!" There were more cheers at this as I mounted Toothless and took off so I could deal with things back on my island.
Berk
Nobodies POV:
As Hiccup flew away to tend to his island the crowd that had formed slowly separated with people talking about the battle that just happened out in the ocean, the amazing dragons Hiccup had under his control, how Hiccup was able to calm his dragons so easily with just a flute, how soothing the music he played was what they intended to buy at the bazaar tomorrow but the main discussion was how Hiccup had been able to control such massive beasts. One of the people discussing what had just transpired were none other than the teens who were making their way up to the great hall as Tuffnut said.
"Those dragons that were fighting out on the ocean were awesome." Snotlout replied.
"You said it Tuff, those dragons were huge and did you see those fire blasts that giant purple one did?" Fishlegs then said.
"I believe Hiccup called it a purple death and they're mentioned in the book of dragons but they were said to have gone extinct generations ago." Ruffnut then said.
"Well whatever it was it was absolutely amazing." Tuff then replied.
"Yeah, just imagine the destruction we could cause if we had any one of those giant dragons under our control." Snotlout replied.
"Who cares about the destruction you could cause?" He then flexed his arms. "Just imagine how good I'd look with one of those things behind me or with me on the head of one." Fishlegs reply.
"Well technically speaking if you were either in front of one it would look like it was going to eat you and if you were standing on top of one then nobody would see you since you'd be way too high for anyone to notice."
"Details, details but we have more important things to focus on like how we're going to convince Hiccup to give us our own dragons." Tuff replied.
"Yeah, the destruction I could cause would be wicked." Ruff replied.
"I'll have an easier time spending time with Hiccup." It was then Astrid spoke up for the first time.
"Would you three give it up?" They turned to face her. "He's not going to teach you three how to train dragons after all the years of torment you put him through." Tuff then said.
"He might if we keep pestering him long enough." Fishlegs replied.
"Well you've pestered him nearly every minute he's on Berk when he visits and the only thing you've been able to do is annoy him and get him to release his wolves on you that one time." Snotlout glared at him.
"I told you never to bring that up again." Tuff then said.
"Yeah, those wolves were vicious when they caught us." He rubbed his butt. "Especially that white one that caught me." Ruff then laughed.
"Yeah that was one fierce boy." Fishlegs then said.
"Actually, when it walked back to Hiccup he began rubbing its head and calling it his good girl meaning the wolf that got you is a female."
"I got my butt bitten by a girl?"
"It appears so." Astrid then said.
"Okay enough with the wolves and dragons as we have more important things to worry about." Snotlout shrugged.
"Like what?"
"Like helping spread word to everyone that the giant purple dragon wasn't the Midgard serpent and that Hiccups got it all under control." Before anyone could reply she continued. "Also, we've got to prepare for the event that's coming up." The twins and Snotlout groaned as Snotlout said.
"Still can't believe our parents volunteered us all for that stupid new school thing." Fishlegs replied.
"Actually, it's not that bad to help out the village a bit!" Astrid then said.
"For now, then let's just focus on helping everyone find out what's gone down with the purple death." With that they all walked away.
Five days later
Hiccups POV:
It's been five days since what the Vikings of Berk call the battle of titans and in that short amount of time a whole lot of things have happened. For starters the hunters were delivered to the defenders of the wing who assured me that they'd be dealt with and I had the feeling I wouldn't be seeing them ever again. As for the Purple death that I had named Aegir after the norse god of the sea,my bewiderbeasts had helped set up his own section of the ice nest where he spent most of his time just enjoying the peace. I'd say he's bonded well with the other Alpha's and he enjoyed it when I'd sit down with him and play my calming flute, which is why I made my own modification to his nest section. I had my whispering deaths dig out some tunnels leading to the different sections of the nest including to the purple deaths section. It was here on a large piece of ice that was sticking out that I made a balcony with a gronkle iron floor and railing so I'd have an easy time playing my calming flute for him. As for my winters wings he had made a full recovery from Aegirfire blast attack since it seems the cold healed him quickly but he had turned the glacier he nested on into a giant ice nest of his own which resembled a giant volcano made of ice. Still I could tell he liked it and as long as he was comfortable then I was happy. Besides this
Now I was on my way to Berk on Toothless since my dad told me there was something he needed me for today but I was hoping it wasn't anything serious since I'm pretty busy. The bazaar is still going on and to add onto this my crops are almost ready for harvest so I had a full day ahead of me. We came to land in the village center where my dad was waiting for me alongside Gobber. I dismounted Toothless and walked up to them as I said.
"Morning dad, morning Gobber!" Gobber replied.
"Morning lad." My dad then said.
"Morning son." I then said.
"So, what is it you needed to talk to me about because if you're going to tell me to get rid of Aegiragain then I will tell you again that you are wasting your time."
"This has nothing to do with your new dragon but a favor for the village."
"What is it dad."
"Well do you remember that old event we had for the younger kids back when you were young." I raised an eyebrow. "When the members of older event would take a child underneath their wing for a few days."
"Do you mean the 'older sibling event'?"
"That's the one."
"I always hated that event." My dads mouth opened up in shock.
"But why?"
"Dad every year I would stand with the rest of my generation and watch as one of the teens took each of them under their wings while I just stood there and was ignored as if I didn't exist before the last teen would walk out saying how he didn't want to be saddled with the worthless runt leaving me in tears as they walked out." I clenched my fists at the memories of how that also got me in trouble at school since we were meant to give a report on what type of day we had. "I'd then come to you but all you'd say is go hang with the teen who picked me before going back to whatever you were doing."
"Was it really that bad for you?" I nodded.
"Sadly, when it comes to bad memories concerning you that one is the least bad." Before he could reply Gobber stepped forward.
"Alright can we discuss how bad the relationship you two have another time and talk about what's going on now." My dad sighed and turned to him.
"You're right Gobber." He turned back to me. "Hiccup I swear to you that one day I'll make it up to you but for now I need a favor."
"You're already on the right path dad but what's this favor you need from me."
"Hiccup I need you to be a volunteer in the 'older sibling event'."
"You mean you actually brought that thing back?"
"I've been getting complaints from parents about how their children have been causing mischief since they're bored now that schools out for their vacation." I sighed.
"And you need me because?"
"There are a lot of kids but not enough teens to go around since one of the families with a teen left to visit some relatives."
"So you want me to volunteer and take a child under my wing." He nodded. "Sorry dad but I'm busy with the harvest coming in and along with that I've got to help maintain order at the bazaar with it coming to a close since that's when things get most chaotic." He sighed.
"Son listen I know you're busy but without you one of those kids is going to be left out of learning what it's like to have be apart of the program." I then saw he was looking uneasy about something. "And I already signed you up for the event." I clenched my fists and growled.
"You did what?"
"Well so many of the little ones look up to you as a hero and parents were trying to convince me to talk you into talking to you about it so I signed you up."
"And why did you do so without asking me if I wasn't busy."
"Well I thought you wouldn't be busy since you're always relaxing while your dragons tend to things on the island." I raised an eyebrow.
"Is that what you think I do everyday?"
"Well I-"
"Dad I supervise the work, make sure my dragons don't start fighting, assigning them new jobs and a whole lot more." They stared at me. "What you think I've just been lounging around all day doing nothing everyday." I saw the looks on their face that's exactly what they believed making me sigh and roll my eyes. "I admit I do have days like that but during preparation, harvest and during the bazaar I've got work to makes sure things go smoothly." Gobber then said.
"Well I'm sure you could take some time out of your schedule, at least to look after a poor child who's looking forward to having someone to take them under their wing." I sighed.
"I suppose I could summon some Anubis warriors to keep an eye on things in the bazaar while having my tiki statues help prepare for the harvest." They smiled. "Just give me some time to get everything in order and I'll be back for the selection." My dad chuckled.
"That's my boy."
"Don't be so pleased dad because if you ever sign me up for something without asking me about it again then I'll personally throw you into one of my islands volcanoes sending you right up to Valhalla where your father is waiting to have a long overdue chat with you about how you treated me before dragon training." I smiled as I heard him gulp before mounting Toothless. "I'll be back as soon as everything is taken care of." They nodded.
"The choosing is going to take place in the great hall so go straight there when you get back." I nodded before we took off.
1 hour later
The last hour had been busy to say the least with everything I needed to get done around my island thanks to my dad signing me up for something I detested as a child. Now my Anubis warriors were guarding areas in the bazaar to keep an eye out for things alongside Mirage, my dragons all knew their jobs and my tiki statues were helping ready things for the harvest. While I did all of these things however I went over things I could do with the child I was to take under my wing for the day. I figured I could take them on a trip through the bazaar to buy them some treats, enjoy a swim in my pool or with Kal since Hippocampus are friendly and playful, enjoy a peaceful lunch in the desert with Nylene, play in the woods with my wolves, read in the library, maybe race on my chariot and a few other ideas I'm sure the child will like. I just hoped I didn't end up with Gustav Larson since there was no doubt he'd spend the entire time trying to convince me to keep him under my wing as an apprentice. I just hoped the child I was taking care of wasn't like him in any way but it wasn't going to be easy since I knew a lot of the kids of Berk looked up to me with more than a few asking me to take them on one of my trips but I always told them it was far too dangerous with the adventures I end up in.
Now I was wearing my regular armor while on Toothless flying towards the great hall so we could see who I'd be looking after for the day. As we flew over the village memories of my own childhood past my mind and in those memories few were good with Snotlout and the twins doing everything they could to make my life hell. Along with them there were also the adults who would glare at me while whispering about how I wasn't fit to be heir and if that wasn't bad enough they always ignored their children's bad behavior when they'd insult me and throw rocks at me. It was these children who now begged me to take one of them on as my apprentice only to not only be told I'm not looking for an apprentice but I could tell they believed I just refused to take any of them because of how they treated me. I hoped I didn't get one of those kids under my care for the day because if I did I was going to blood eagle my father for getting me into that mess of spending a day with one of those children who enjoyed tormenting me knowing they could get away with doing whatever bad thing they wanted to do to me. It was then we came to land in the front of the great hall before I dismounted Toothless and said.
"Why don't you go for a solo flight around the village bud and I'll let out my dragon call when I've got the child we're here to pick up." He crooned and nuzzled my side. "I know bud, I don't want any of those kids who keep pestering me when I'm in the village either but hopefully I won't get any of those children and one of those who actually apologized for how they treated me."
He nodded before I walked into the hall where the rest of my generation was waiting alongside my dad and Gobber. All eyes turned to me as I entered making my dad smiled as he said.
"I'm glad you didn't decide to skip out on the event Hiccup."
"I do my best to keep my word and although I don't like you signing me up for this without talking to me first I can't deny it might be nice to have a child to take under my wing for the day."
"Good to hear son."
"So when is this event going to start and is it going to be like old times where the teens choose the child or will it be different this time?"
"It's going to start when the children arrive and it'll be like the old times where the teens choose the child they'll be looking after." I smiled at this as it gave me an idea.
"Alright dad so when do the children get here?"
"They'll be here momentarily but for now I need you to line up with the other volunteers." I nodded and stood next to Fishlegs as my dad walked up in front of us. "Alright you lot, today you're going to select a child to take care of for the day." There were murmurs. "Now you don't have to do much just take care of them, play with them, feed them, spend time with them and all in all treat them as if they were your little brother or sister."
They all nodded before he stepped back and allowing us to all take a seat on a bench before the doors opened letting multiple children to be lead in by their teacher. A brown haired woman with her hair tied back into two ponytails, a dark brown tunic with matching skirt, a regular Viking helmet and a metal band on her right harm showing herself to be a teacher like all the others on Berk. I recognized her as Alta the teacher who used to tutor children including me when she was a teenager. She smiled and stepped in front of the kids and said.
"Alright students today is the day you'll each be chosen by one of the older children who'll be your older brother or sister for the day." They all nodded. "Now then let's all line up so the older generation can see who they'll be looking after each of you."
I sat back and watched as Snotlout took Gustave, Astrid took her little cousin Jamie, the twins chose two brown haired kids of both genders and Fishlegs took a black haired girl. I just lay back against the table and watched as each of the children was picked by one of the older generation while I watched. As I did though I noticed some of the children giving me hopeful looks probably hoping I'd choose them but I just sat back and watched as they were chosen and taken out of the hall. The reason I wasn't choosing any of the children was because all the teens knew the children and what they were like and while we waited for them I heard all of them muttering how they weren't going to pick the runt. This meant the child who was picked last would be the runt that nobody wanted to care for just like I was when I was young but unlike the last teen of that time, I wasn't going to take the child under my wing. It was then the last of the children was taken out of the great hall leaving only one little girl who was sitting down on a bench looking down at her hands sadly. I knew she was the last of the lot and more than likely the runt who nobody wanted to pick and spend the day with. I walked up to her and saw she was a typical Viking girl with brown hair tied back into two large braids, a small Viking helmet on her head, a brown tunic with matching skirt along with brown fur boots and her eyes were brown with sadness in them. I walked up to her smiling before I kneeled down to her level and said.
"Hey there little one, what's your name?" She looked up at me as her eyes widened before she answered
"It's Ylva sir!"
"There's no need for calling me sir Ylva, just call me Hiccup and correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't your name mean female wolf." She nodded and looked down.
"Everyone always picks on me because of it since I'm more frightened the fearless like a wolf." I chuckled.
"My dear girl, I've bred wolves and let me tell you that none of them were fearless." She looked up at me with surprise on her face.
"Really?" I nodded.
"Really, now tell me are you one of the children who's here for the event?" She looked down and nodded sadly.
"Yes but nobody wanted to be stuck with the runt of the litter." I could see tears beginning to form in her eyes making me frown so I placed my hand on her shoulder.
"Now that's not true."
"Yes it is since nobody bothered to pick me."
"But someone has picked you."
"Who?" I smiled at her.
"Me!" Her eyes widened at this. "I waited to see who would be picked last after hearing how nobody wanted to pick the runt so I could pick them."
"But why would you pick me?" I sighed and sat down next to her.
"Back when I was your age and it was time for the event I was the last child waiting for the final teenager to pick me but instead he told me he didn't want to be saddled with the worthless runt leaving me in tears while also getting me in trouble at school since I couldn't do the assignment without actually being able to partake in the event." I sighed as I shook my head. "Not a good time for me but I swore that when my time came I'd take the last child remaining so nobody would suffer like I did." I then noticed her look of shock as she stared up at me. "Is something wrong?"
"You were a runt?"
"Yeah, I thought everyone on Berk knew that." I then realized something. "You weren't raised here, were you?" She shook her head.
"No, my family moved here about what I've been told is three days after you left for Greece." She then looked down. "Another reason everyone avoids me since nobody wants to be friends with the new girl who's also a runt." I patted her back.
"I know the feeling from my youth but why did your family move?"
"My daddy used to live here till he left to visit his uncle's village with his family where he met my mom and fell in love with her so he moved there to be with her."
"Then why did he decide to move back?"
"Well my parents heard about all the great things that have been happening with Berk and how most hostile people are now too afraid to come near Berk so they moved back here."
"Wait what great things are you talking about and why would hostiles be afraid to attack Berk?"
"Most of those things are because of you."
"Because of me?"
"Well most of the hostiles are too afraid of you and your dragons while the great things they've heard about Berk are how the warriors have weapons that are lighter and stronger than anything, how dragons don't bother anyone anymore and my mom had been wanting to see that new foreign market place was like."
"You mean the bazaar on my island?" She nodded.
"Yeah, she was really upset when she found out she wouldn't be able to attend it till you got back and opened up."
"How'd she react on the first day of it being opened?"
"She left right after breakfast to see what they were selling and came home with a new carpet." She giggled. "My daddy groaned when he found out how much it cost and that she intended to go back again everyday it was open while bringing him with her on the next few trips." I chuckled before an idea came to me. "Have you been to the bazaar?" She shook her head.
"No but I'd like to visit there and see what they have at their stalls since when my mom described it she said they had so many interesting things."
"Well then I know what we're doing first." She looked at me with hope in her eyes.
"You're going to take me to the market place."
"Yep, now come on since the last days are always the craziest times." She squealed in delight and hopped off the bench as I stood up but before she could run to the door I grabbed her hand. "Slow down there little lady after all you can't go anywhere without me being there to take you." She nodded but the smile never left her face as we walked outside. "Tell me have you seen me ride on my nightfury Toothless?" She nodded.
"Yeah, I've seen you ride him into the village from time to time."
"You ever want to go for a ride on him." She nodded.
"I've been wanting to see what it's like to fly up in the sky."
"Well you'll be able to learn what it's like to be up in the sky today." I let out my dragon call before Toothless came down to land in front of us crooning before he looked at me while I petted his nose. "Hey bud, have a nice flight?" He crooned before turning to Ylva who hid behind me making me smiled down at her. "Don't worry he's not going to hurt you Ylva." I turned back to Toothless. "Will you bud?" He shook his head then leaned towards Ylva sniffing her and possibly looking for a head scratch. "This is Ylva and I'll be taking care of her for the day so be kind bud." He crooned as Ylva hesitantly reached for his head while I looked at her. "Don't worry Ylva he won't hurt you with me here." She then hesitantly began petting his head making him croon as Ylva relaxed making me smile. "Now let's get to that Bazaar." She looked up at me as I lifted her up by the waist and put her onto his saddle before hopping on behind her. "Let's go bud." He let out a growl and we took off.
Sundown
The sun was setting bringing an end to my day with Ylva who I doubt could've looked more disappointed then she did now and I couldn't blame her since I had to say we had a pretty fun day. To begin with I took her to the bazaar where I had to carry her on my shoulders so she could get a good look around at the slightly crowded market and bought each of us a bag of sugared dates which she took an immediate liking to before we went to enjoy a performance some Arabians were putting on. When the dance was over I took her to my island for a day filled with fun activities of her choice from a list of activities I put together in my mind.
We swam with my tidal classes and Kal all of which were happy to have a new playmate, ran with my wolves in the forest who enjoyed the race, played hide and seek in my jungle with my monkeys and jaguars before enjoying a lunch at the top of my temple with my Quetzalcoatl dragons, raced down the paths in my desert on Phlegon's chariot before we had a drink at the gazebo with Nimla wrapping her neck around Ylva who just laughed and rubbed her neck, enjoyed a peaceful walk through the great planes as Aylen ran through the grass, watched my dust coyotes run through the Indian desert, lay down in the grass of my Irish fields while watching the clouds go by, enjoyed watching my Griffins fly around from railing of the griffins roost, teaching Ylva the basics of surfing with Wavechomper, showing her my dragons, watching her get frost blown onto her head by my bewilderbeasts making me chuckle and all in all just having fun. The rooms we spent the most time in however was my trophy room where Ylva begged me to tell her how I got each of my trophies, what beast I took on to get them and how I got them. I chuckled at the memory of her enthusiasm when it came to learning about my adventures. Now we were on Toothless on our way back to Berk so I could drop Ylva back at her home where she was without a doubt going to tell her parents all about her day. It was then we came to land in front of a hut with the head of a yellow monstrous nightmare on top of the roof. I dismounted Toothless before I helped Ylva off as I said.
"I hope I was able to make your day a fun one Ylva."
"It was great Hiccup." I smiled down at her.
"Well I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it Ylva and I'll see you around the village when I visit."
"Will I be allowed to come visit your island to play with the animals and dragons again?" I just smiled down and patted her head.
"We'll see Ylva, we'll see." I then mounted Toothless. "Till next time Ylva, have a nice night." Toothless and I then took off.
Back with Ylva
Nobodies POV:
Ylva ran into the hut her family owned only to be greeted by her mother who looked like your standard Viking women with red hair and brown eyes, standing over a pot in the middle of the room as she stirred the contents. The hut itself was a typical Viking hut like all the others on Berk with a fire pit in the center of the room, two chairs on either side of it, some baskets and barrels against the walls holding various items and at the back was a table with four chairs set up around it. Ylva's mother stopped stirring the soup to turn to her daughter and smiled at her before she asked.
"Ylva, welcome home sweetie." Ylva smiled at her mother.
"Thanks mommy."
"Now tell me did you have a good time with the teen who picked you?" She nodded excitedly.
"Yeah, Hiccup made sure the day on his island was tons of fun." Her eyes widened.
"You were picked by Hiccup Haddock and spent the day on his island."
"Yeah and it was amazing with everything there is to do there and Hiccup showed me plenty of the fun stuff there was to do."
"Well you'll have to tell me and your father all about it when he gets home." It was then a voice asked.
"Tell me all about what dear."
The two women turned to see a Viking male with a long straight beard and his hair tied back in a short braid. Ylva squealed at the sight of the man before she ran up to him while yelling.
"DADDY!" He smiled at her and scooped her up as he asked.
"Oh, my little Valkyrie, did you have a good day with the teen who was looking after you?"
"Uh huh, I had a great time with Hiccup on his island." His eyes widened.
"You went to the island where only the chief and Gobber have been and said to be a place with different areas from around the world?" She nodded while smiling.
"Yeah and it was so much fun."
"Well you're going to have to tell us all about your day then." It was then his wife said.
"It'll have to be done over dinner which is going to get cold if we don't sit down and eat now." He nodded and walked over to the table to enjoy the dinner.
2 hours later
Ylva's parents had just tucked her into bed where she had immediately fallen asleep after a long day of play. Her parents smiled at her from the doorway. Her mother smiled at her as she said.
"I'm so glad she enjoyed her day, I was worried nobody would pick her since she's new in Berk."
"To be honest with you dear I'm just glad Hiccup didn't find out she was my daughter." She frowned at him.
"And why would that be a bad thing?"
"Hon, I was the one who turned my back on him when he was a child because I didn't want to be stuck with the runt." He sighed. "If he knew that then he might've refused to take her under his wing for the day." His wife sighed.
"Now don't beat yourself up love since we all make mistakes while we're young and besides that if what Gobbers told me is anything to go by he wouldn't hold anything against a child for what their parent did." He sighed.
"I know but it doesn't fully get rid of the fear." He then looked down. "Or the guilt." She rubbed his back.
"Don't let it eat up your mind dear." He nodded. "Now let's get to bed." He nodded again and let her lead him away.
Morning
Berks School
The only room in the school of Berk wasn't large but it did have enough room for all the students to fit in comfortably. There were two rows of wooden desks with four desks in each row and each desk was able to sit down two of thee children, the one wall had a small book shelf holding some children books, on the wall were a few drawings on parchments done by the students and at the front of it all was a desk that was larger than the others which is to be expected since it was for the teacher and on this desk was a few books and a simple inkpot with quill. This school was now filled with children all sitting at their tables with Alta standing up at the front. She smiled at all the children all talking with the child sat down next them at the same desk and her smile widened at the sight of young Ylva talking with Jamie since she'd had it slightly rough since she got here with not that many children wanting to play with her. The only one who was kind to her was young Jamie Hofferson who had a rough time as well but with the Hofferson name people had a little more respect for him. Alta clapped her hands together getting the attention of all the children as she said.
"Alright everyone settle down now so we can begin todays lesson." The children all quieted down and turned all their attention to their teacher. "Now then, today we'll all be hearing about how your day with the older kids went." There were many groans until Alta continued. "Starting with Gustav Larson." He groaned. "Now Gustav please come and tell us what your day with Snotlout was like." He groaned and walked up to the front of the class before he said.
"My day with Snotlout was tiring and miserable." There were many confused looks at his words. "I was told we were going to learn what it's like to have an older sibling to look out for us but Snotlout treated me like I was his servant." There were many gasps at this. "He forced me to do all his chores like clean his parents house, shovel yak dung, fix the hole in the roof and more plus while I did all this he just sat back with a drink in his hand telling me to work faster." He then looked down. "The worst part of it all was when the day finally ended he told his father he did all the work on his own while explaining to me what he was doing." Alta then said.
"So not only did Snotlout take advantage of you and then took credit of all your work." He nodded. "Well I'll be having words with his parents and him at the end of school." He nodded. "Now please take your seat." He walked over and sat down. "Now Jamie why don't you tell us about your day with your cousin Astrid." He walked up to the front.
"My day with my cousin Astrid was pretty much just like any other day with her." He sighed. " She just had me help her train while also showing me a few tips and trips to help me with my own training."
"So for you it was just another average day for you." He nodded. "I suppose that's better then what Snotlout did." She then sent him back to his chair before calling the two children who were set up with the twins to the front and asked them what their day was like before one answered.
"It started out fun but then it ended horribly."
"How so?" The other child answered.
"They took us yak tipping for fun and got us to steal Gobbers underwear before they strung them up the flag pole." Everyone chuckled at this before the other child said.
"The worst part is they left us to take all the blame meaning we both got grounded for a month." Alta sighed as she shook her head and said.
"I'll talk to your parents and see if we could discuss having your punishment taken care of after class." They nodded as they were sent back to their desk as the child who Fishlegs took was called up and asked to describe his day.
"I can describe my day in one word and that word is 'boring'!" Alta gestured for him to continue. "We spent the entire day in the library going through different books claiming how fascinating learning new things were but I didn't understand most of the stuff since I wasn't allowed to enjoy any of the books I like since they weren't educational as he put it." He sighed. "I've never been more bored in my life." Alta sighed and sent him back to his desk before she turned to the class and asked.
"Did any of you have fun with the teen who chose you?" The only hand that went up was the one that belonged to Ylva bringing everyone's attention to her. "Did you have fun with the one who chose you Ylva?" She smiled and nodded enthusiastically as she said.
"Yeah, Hiccup made sure we had tons of fun on his island." There were immediately whispers among the students until Alta clapped her hands silencing them before turning to Ylva.
"Why don't you come up and tell us all the fun things Hiccup did with you on his island." She immediately walked up to the front and told everyone of the amazing things she saw on Hiccups island and all the fun stuff they did, not realizing all the looks of envy that were being sent at her before she finished. "Well it sounds like you had an amazing time with Hiccup Ylva." She nodded while smiling. "Now I'm sure everyone has a few questions for you so would you mind answering them?"
"I don't mind." Alta smiled before turning to the class. "Now then who has questions for young Ylva?" All hands went up before Alta pointed to a pudgy brown haired boy at the back who was known to be a major fan of Hiccup. "What would your question be Lars?" He glared at Ylva as he asked.
"Why would an awesome guy like Hiccup pick a pathetic runt like you instead of picking one of us who actually deserves the honor of going to his island." Alta was prepared to scold him for his insults but before she could Ylva answered.
"Hiccup told me he wanted to take care of me for the day since nobody else would and it reminded him of when nobody picked him as a child." Before Lars could say anything else Alta held up her hand and said.
"That's enough out of you Lars and I will be talking to your parents after class so for now be quiet and sit down." He just grumbled as he crossed his arms while Alta said. "Now with that out of the way does anyone have any other questions?" The rest of the school day was filled with questioning young Ylva about what Hiccup was like and what his island was like.
Meanwhile
Far away in an ice nest
A thin woman with long brown haired tied back into four braids going by the name of Valka looked out at the large ice nest where countless dragons were all flying around a large pillar of ice covered in plant life. While the dragons did so she took notice of two adult gronkles watching over their six hatchlings that were playing with each other. As she watched them do so she let out a sad sigh and shook her head while looking down before a croon of concern from behind her got her attention. She turned to see a large stormcutter dragon looking down at her in concern but she just gave it a pat on the head and said.
"I'm alright Cloudjumper." He growled showing he didn't believe her. "It's just seeing those hatchlings makes me wonder how my own son is doing since the last time I saw him was when he was a baby and that was over ten years ago." She sighed. "I wonder if he ever thinks of me." He just crooned. "I know I should just forget about my past Cloudjumper but as a mother I can never forget my child and wonder these things." With that she turned back to face the nest and watched the dragons fly by.
