And happy 3-Year Anniversary to Pokémon Radiant Sun. Good god, we're only halfway through the story and we've hit the three year mark. Wow...crazy, huh?
Seriously though, I hope everyone's had a safe and fun holiday season. I'm back into the writing groove with this rather difficult chapter. However that means that I'll be enjoying the next few days off to relax and recharge! My goal is to finish the current Act before I leave the country for my next big adventure, so be prepared for the action and story to come at you hard and fast.
Shoutout to those who reviewed since the last update, which includes SolanaLeonhart, Oragonking, two Guest reviewers, BraviaryScout, Anasazi Darkmoon and SonicIKE. Thank you for the support and fantastic feedback.

Chapter 101: Koi Ana Makai
Hau'oli City
"Alolaaa!"
Lusamine grinned at the greeting, making sure to do the wave in return. She could get used to this sort of treatment abroad.
They had just stepped off of the plane and were getting a hero's welcome. Lusamine and Mohn, her new boyfriend, were walking hand in hand through recently refurbished airport sitting at the edge of Hau'oli City, the largest city in the Alola region. They were now going to be for the next few months as part of an initiative to get the Kahunas and the Alolan Regional Council to agree to create a Pokémon League of their own.
It was also a vacation of sorts. Lusamine had been hard at work for well over two years and keeping the peace in the region, serving as a figurehead when needed and being a symbol of hope and strength for Kalos. Two months in the tropics were just what she needed right about now. All League challengers would be put on hold until she returned, which wasn't an entirely popular decision but it was accepted nevertheless. It wasn't one she was very fond of either, but she really did need a break from things.
And even better, she could spend the break with her new boyfriend, Mohn Jardin.
Lusamine squeezed Mohn's hand as they strode through the airport, with several members of the paparazzi already snapping pictures as they proceeded through. Mohn smiled and waved, making finger gun gestures and thumbs ups to the people as they passed. Lusamine couldn't help an amused smirk at that. Even if he wasn't a politician like she was, Mohn was such a likable and friendly person that he could befriend even total strangers. The press adored the man for just being a good guy. She was blessed to have met him, and he was invaluable in times like this.
The couple picked up their bags and exited the airport, where they found themselves with an entourage waiting for them. Standing at the front of the group was a muscular man wearing a formal orange and yellow Gi and a man wearing sleeveless suit.
The man wearing the Gi looked to be in his forties, and was tall and powerfully built, with muscles rippling across his body. He had brown eyes and short spiky black hair, though there were flecks of dark gray hidden within it. His tanned skin bespoke of countless days under the Alolan sun, and his eyes squinted ahead at the two new arrivals, his mustache wrinkling slightly as he smiled at them,
The other man was somewhat of an oddity. He was a rather handsome man that looked to be in his mid-thirties, and he wore a pristine black and white sleeveless suit, with half of his head shaved bald with the other half being a mop of red hair combed to the side. His skin was lightly tanned and his orange eyes gleamed mischievously, his smile pleasant and welcoming. A spiral tattoo of some sort was emblazoned on the bald side of his head in red ink.
"Alola, my friends! Welcome to Hau'oli City, the pride and joy of Alola!" the red-haired man called, performing the traditional Alolan greeting alongside the larger man.
"Yes. It's an honor to have someone as renowned as you visiting these sacred islands. We have much to discuss. I am Hala Pakelaai, the Kahuna of Melemele Island." The larger man grunted, seeming a bit less personable than the other man who seemed far more animated.
"The name's Roran Rubinara, Kahuna of Ula'ula Island. So pleased to meet you!" the red-headed man said with a friendly grin, waving to the two of them. Mohn grinned at the two of them while Lusamine spoke.
"It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you for having us both." Lusamine said politely, bowing slightly to the two men.
"The pleasure is ours! It's not often we get a reigning Champion to grace our presence. Perhaps that'll be what it takes to convince the others to institute a Pokémon League here and join the rest of the civilized world." Roran said carelessly, though he did glance at Hala as he spoke. The larger man grunted in response.
"You should stick to playing with your rocks and stones, Roran. Our traditions stretch back hundreds upon hundreds of years. Deciding to create something like a Pokémon League threatens to upturn our very way of life! It's not something to take so lightly." Hala said to Roran, who simply rolled his eyes.
"I can't help it if playing around with 'rocks and stones' is more interesting than punching people all day, Hala. And I'm aware that the Island Challenge is central to our heritage. But that doesn't mean we have to let it hold us back, Hala! History is our greatest teacher, after all. You'd do well to learn that, because history goes both ways. I plan on ensuring Alola has a future to speak, of instead of lurking in the past." Roran responded with a pointed look at the other Kahuna before looking back at the confused couple ahead of them. Hala was fuming at the other man, and it was obvious to the two foreigners that the two Kahunas didn't see eye-to-eye.
"Don't mind us. Me and Hala always have this disagreement. He's not the one who's spent millions on developing Alola, trying to better the regions as a whole. Oh wait, that's right. That was me." Roran said with a roll of the eyes. Hala's frown became more pronounced at this comment, but he didn't respond. Lusamine wondered if that was because he couldn't.
"Hmph. Regardless of our squabbling, we are pleased to see you here, Champion Lusamine. We hope you enjoy everything Alola has to offer." Hala boomed, reaching out a hand for Lusamine to shake. She did so, with Hala's rough hands shaking her arm roughly twice before he let go.
"We've got just one briefing to go to before we fly you to Ula'ula for your stay here. I've already prepared your accommodations at my new hotel. Goodness knows you two probably want a good nap and some food that doesn't come from a tin. Am I right?" Roran said jovially to the two Kalosians, earning a grateful nod from Mohn. Roran cracked a grin at the two of them.
"I promise you, your stay here will be simply delightful. Just trust in me and we'll have no problems." Roran said pleasantly, walking ahead of them with his hands dug into his pockets. Hala scowled at the man for a brief moment before allowing himself to calm down with a soft sigh. With that, he walked after his fellow Kahuna.
Mohn and Lusamine exchanged a glance before following them, eager to drop off their luggage and relax after a long plane flight. As they walked, the two Kalosians took note of the construction being done around the area. Many places that boasted soon to be built shops, hotels and attractions in the city were being advertised. The name Roran Rubinara was shown on each and every one of the billboards, which served as proof of what the Kahuna said. It seemed he was funding mass development of Alola's tourism industry, which Lusamine approved of. It would be good for the region.
Locals shouted greetings to them in their native language, which snapped Lusamine out of her thoughts. The Kalos Champion could smell something sweet in the air, wafting out of a nearby shop as a woman fried several pastries. Music could be heard in the distance, drums and a flute being audible despite the din of sound around them. As they took in the sights, smells and sounds of the area, Mohn couldn't help a smirk as he caught Lusamine watching a few of the local children playing with a small pink bear Pokémon.
"She always did love cute Pokémon. Or as she says, beautiful Pokémon." Mohn thought fondly as Lusamine caught him staring at her.
"I have a feeling we'll like it here." Mohn said cheerily, wrapping a hand around Lusamine's. The Champion blushed slightly, squeezing the man's hand in response before walking after the two Kahunas.
"About 23 years ago, I went to the Alola region as part of a diplomatic mission to convince the Kahunas and the Alolan Regional Council to begin work to create a Pokémon League in the region." Lusamine began, watching as Hau and Sun listened on eagerly. Even Wicke seemed interested.
"Me and my late husband, Mohn, journeyed to the region in order to establish relations and perhaps get that particular ball rolling. As you can tell from the fact that there's no Pokémon League in Alola today, you can tell we failed miserably." Lusamine remarked dryly, shrugging after a moment.
"Mohn…" Sun thought with some surprise, recalling the friendly man with amnesia he had encountered at the Poké Pelago. He wondered if it was the same man she was describing. Sun glanced at Hau, who had no reaction to hearing the name. It was obvious he hadn't been able to see any similarities.
Sun wanted to ask Lusamine about that, but then he remembered Wes' request to keep his location a secret. He couldn't very well tell Lusamine about Mohn, when that would reveal where the original Snagger had been sheltered away all this time. At the same time, he wasn't entirely sure if he could trust Lusamine. While she seemed to be a kind woman, something about her seemed...off.
No. Sun would keep the secret of Mohn to himself, for now. It was possible he was just overthinking things anyway.
"We quickly realized that our stay in the region wouldn't be an unproblematic one. The Ruby Raiders were quickly establishing dominance in the region and the Kahunas and Captains were hard-pressed to stop them. From where we were staying at Ula'ula Island, we learned about the reign of terror those cretins were putting the region under. Muggings, murders, drugs, kidnapping and worst of all child trafficking." Lusamine finished with a scowl, crossing her arms.
"Amidst all of these drama, me and Mohn decided to head out into the wilds for some training and peace. That's where we met Ash and Damien, running for the lives as a clan of Alolan Golem tried to kill them." Lusamine remarked, though Wicke chimed in.
"You mean the protected ones on Route 12?" Wicke asked Lusamine, who nodded.
"Yes. Granted not all of the Alolan Geodude, Graveler and Golem on that route are dangerous, but any of the ones in the large clan of them that live there are incredibly hostile to humans and won't hesitate to kill those who intrude upon their territory. Hence why the area is a protected site by order of the Aether Foundation." Lusamine explained, smiling after a moment. "It's mostly so other people don't get hurt by them. I pity anyone who gets stuck in their clutches."
"So...You saved my Dad from these Alolan Golem. What next?" Sun asked the Aether President, who nodded.
"Mohn and I bonded with your father very quickly. While your father was a very feisty boy, it was obvious he was a sweet child who had just been brought up in an environment of anger and fear." Lusamine said, earning a look from Sun. Lusamine's expression sobered up a bit.
"That is to say Ashton's parents were very abusive. His father, in particular, was a very cruel man who despised his only son. Ano Aupuni clung to his past glory as a Trial Captain and to the family lineage the Aupuni name held. Apparently your family comes from a long line of great trainers in Alola that goes back centuries. This isn't uncommon in Alola, where power and prestige comes to those who are victorious in the Island Challenge." Lusamine explained, looking towards Hau. The boy nodded, agreeing with that statement, which made Sun wonder how much history Hau's family had.
"I bet the Island Challenge was worse back then. I know nowadays the Captains have safeguards in place to lessen the amount of danger in the Trials." Wicke remarked quietly, with Lusamine nodding.
"Things are a bit safer nowadays, thanks to communication and technology, as well as more information being out there. The Island Challenge can be deadly, and it was more so back in those days." Lusamine explained, leaning back in her seat as she looked at Sun. "Ashton was put under a lot of pressure growing up, especially considering even at that young age he didn't want to be a Trainer."
"Did Dad ever say why he didn't want to be a Trainer?" Sun asked, though Lusamine nodded in response.
"Ashton didn't really see the point of it, as a child. He was far more interested in the world around him. He wanted to help people who were struggling in life, and hated the idea of forcing Pokémon to fight each other for amusement and for the sake of sport. Ashton's father, however, disagreed with that notion. On Ashton's 11th birthday, your father was thrown out of the house with an empty backpack, an Island Trial Amulet and a single Poké Ball and left to fend for himself. And he was given the order to complete the Island Challenge or not come back." Lusamine explained as she leaned forward, seeing the two surprised looks on Sun and Hau's face.
"That's...crazy. I can't believe that." Hau remarked, frowning in response.
"Really? Would you imagine someone like myself never had a friend until I was 18?" Lusamine asked Hau, who looked absolutely baffled. "Don't judge a book by his cover, Hau. And just because adults always know best doesn't mean that they can't be cruel."
Wicke looked away at those words, but Sun and Hau didn't see this. Instead they were processing the words of President Lusamine, and her warning.
"So...you met up with my Dad early on in his Island Challenge?" Sun asked Lusamine, receiving yet another nod as she sipped her tea daintily.
"Yes. The same day he caught that grumpy canine of his." Lusamine answered, lowering her cup. "Mohn and I decided that while we were waiting for the Alolan Regional Council to debate things, which took weeks at times, we could accompany Ash on his Island Trial. Of course, we would have to leave his side at times to deal with politics, but for a time me and Mohn were more than happy to guide Ashton. Especially since it was obvious he was doing the Island Challenge because he had no choice and wasn't an experienced Trainer by any means."
Sun nodded slowly, and then spoke in a murmured. "Kinda reminds me of Team Skull...Those who fail the Island Challenge or quit it are ostracized. Looked down on. Dad didn't want to do the Island Challenge, and he knew if he quit or messed up then…"
"He was already treated horribly at home. If he came back unsuccessful, imagine what sort of horror awaited him when he returned to his parents." Lusamine said quietly, her tone becoming somber. A sad smile crossed her features as she said, "But there were plenty of happy days between the three of us. Once we helped Ashton get a few friends, things were easier for him. Even after we left to head back to Kalos, once Alolan Grand Council declined the Pokémon League's proposals. I eventually got married and didn't return to Kalos until after I was dethroned two years later."
"And...what happened in those two years?" Hau asked Lusamine, who chuckled softly.
"Quite a bit. The Alolan police were waging an all-out war against the Ruby Raiders and their anonymous leader, but despite this many were suffering. Kidnappings, theft, and more illegal drugs than you could shake a stick at." Lusamine answered, her smile fading. "What happened was that Ashton continued his Island Challenge. However, he ran afoul of the Ruby Raiders."
"Who exactly were they?" Sun asked, crossing his arms. "I keep hearing about how bad they were, but not anything about them directly."
"The Ruby Raiders were one of the most infamous criminal organization to come out of the Alola region. Pirates who were particularly violent and experts at escaping when they wanted to. They specialized in drugs and smuggling everything you can think of. Pokémon, money, illegal goods...though what most people remember them for is trafficking children." Lusamine said with a harsh note in her voice, making Sun and Hau's eyes widen.
"Your father had encountered them a few times during his Island Challenge before they really started causing trouble. We were with him twice when this occurred and we helped Ash fend them off. The third time, however, resulted in tragedy. One of Ash's Pokémon was killed by the Ruby Raiders and his closest friend was maimed as a result of an attack, losing an arm in the struggle." Lusamine continued, allowing a dark smile to come to her face. "The fools didn't know what kind of enemy they had made of Ashton, though."
"Why was that?" Hau asked.
"Because Ashton was, and still is, a very emotional person. Despite the facade he projects, he thrives off using his emotion to power him through any difficulty. He used his hatred of Roran, who had betrayed Alola and terrorized his own people, to destroy the Ruby Raiders alongside us, Jackal and Nanu. It was his sorrow that led to him leaving Alola never to return, and allowed him to finally spread his wings and become a part of a world that didn't involve Pokémon Battles. And most importantly...his love, that has allowed him to commit various atrocities in the name of protecting the one who matters most to him." Lusamine finished softly, her eyes going to Sun.
"Ashton beat the Island Challenge when he was sixteen, taking five years to do so. He took a longer time than most did, due to his reluctance to complete it, but also because he didn't want to be back with his parents if he could help it. During this time he assisted the International Police in tracking down the hideout of the Ruby Raiders, where they found…" Lusamine trailed off, shaking her head.
"What is it?" Wicke asked Lusamine, with the President letting out a soft sigh.
"Ash never told me the details, but I can guess what happened. Long story short, the leader of the Ruby Raiders had kidnapped Ashton's closest friend and murdered him personally in a particularly gruesome manner. Ashton uncovered the leader's secret identity while sneaking onboard a ship and discovered both of these facts while looking for his friend...To say it was a shock to your father is putting it lightly." Lusamine said to Sun, who didn't say anything.
"Your father changed after that. He became far more protective of his friends and doubled down on his training. He swore he would protect those precious to him so that no one else would have to suffer from what Roran had done. Ashton then made it his personal goal to destroy the Ruby Raiders by any means necessary. Even if he had to kill Roran." Lusamine explained to the boys, though Wicke chimed in.
"Wait...Their leader. It was a man by the name of Roran Rubinara, wasn't it?" Wicke asked, confused.
"Yes. The then-Kahuna of Ula'ula Island, Roran Rubinara, had formed a villainous team right under the nose of everyone he had sworn to protect. All designed for the sake of terrorizing the region to keep himself looking like a strong figurehead and funding the development of Alola into a tourist hot-spot."
"What was he like? You knew him, didn't you?" Hau asked Lusamine, who simply sighed.
"Roran was what you call a 'cult of personality'. On the surface he was a charismatic and handsome leader who was once the wealthiest man in Alola, selflessly giving to those less fortunate and promoting the ideal of Alola's development. If you looked back about 25 years, the difference between what Alola was like back then as opposed to now is like night and day. Roran was chosen by Tapu Bulu as a Kahuna when the previous Kahuna drowned in the Malie Garden, and used this political power to spearhead a movement to modernize Alola." Lusamine explained, uncrossing her legs and leaning forward, her eyes narrowed.
"In truth, Roran was a schemer. He exploited others to gather power while amassing wealth through illegal means. His Ruby Raiders caused trouble that he would then clear up, making himself seem even more like a hero to Alola and its people. All the while he was manipulating them into funding his vision of Alola, a paradise where everyone could experience the joys of the land he had grown up on." Lusamine explained, sighing softly. "Roran saw Alola as a place he had built from the ground-up using his own blood, sweat, tears and money. In his eyes, it was only fitting that the people of Alola give back to him so he could make all of their dreams a reality."
"That's insane." Hau remarked, looking rather concerned by this. "My question is...how come more people don't know this?"
"Simple. Because Roran was one of the most powerful men in Alola, once upon a time. He had connections everywhere you can think of, and many people believed in his ideology. That it was time for Alola to step into the future with everyone else and become stronger for it. After Roran fell, many of Roran's accomplishments and feats were scrubbed from history. Mostly in order for those who supported him to protect themselves. Though many remember him and what he did, you'll be hard-pressed to find any hand-written accounts." Lusamine explained to the children.
"He also died 18 years ago. I remember hearing about it, even back then. It was a huge scandal." Wicke remarked thoughtfully, making Lusamine scowl.
"Yes. Agent Jackal managed to kill Roran by shooting him in the arm and making him fall out of a window and off a cliff,if I recall correctly. And then everyone in Alola that was associated with Roran made Jack take the fall for the entire scandal." Lusamine said with a scowl, which marred her beautiful face. It was almost scary.
"My friend mentioned how Commander Jack has...had a bad reputation in Alola." Sun remarked, with Lusamine nodding.
"Roran's passing left many of those corrupt Elders and politicians in a bad spot. They used the very man who saved Alola as their scapegoat and had him fired from Law Enforcement." Lusamine continued, leaning back in her chair and crossing her legs once more.
"After Roran fell, Ashton continued on to finish his Island Challenge in order to try and get his mind off of the injustice that had happened to Jack. After defeating all four Kahunas, including a newly-selected Nanu, in four back-to-back battles he decided to live with us in Alola for a time. The day Ashton turned 18, he left for Kanto and never looked back. After that…" Lusamine trailed off, shrugging. "You and your mother likely know better than I. Ashton kept in contact with me until recently, letting me know how things were going in Kanto. As well as how both Aupuni Industries and the Monarch Corporation were doing. And in turn, Ash made sure to buy both my son and daughter gifts from all around the world on his travels and never failed to check in on us during the holidays. His calls have become far less frequent in the past few years though."
Sun bowed his head, deep in thought. It was a lot to take in. His father's awful upbringing. Being forced into the Island Challenge. Being betrayed by a Kahuna and having your best friend killed?
No wonder Ashton had wanted to leave.
"That's just scratching the surface, and summing up the activities of a friend I've known for decades. Of course I could go into the details. How your father spent ages trying to get past the first Tapu using just Damien, who was just a Houndour at the time. Or how his first crush was a blonde-haired girl selling wood carvings." Lusamine said with a wistful smile, remembering those happy days. She then focused her attention back on the gray-eyed boy ahead of her. "And I tell you this not just because you asked, Sun, but because I think you deserve to know the truth. Your father may have wanted to protect you, but I feel as though he was holding you back. Much like his parents held him back from his true calling."
"Dad always did say he was a better businessman than he was a Trainer. Which is saying something…" Sun trailed off, shaking his head. He was developing a headache now.
"I think that can serve as a stopping point for the night." Lusamine remarked, taking that moment to stand up. "We can continue this conversation tomorrow, if you so wish."
Hau looked at Sun, who had an unreadable expression on his face now. It was a mixture of emotions that Hau couldn't place Regardless of this he stood up and nodded before Lusamine turned to Wicke.
"Miss Wicke will escort you boys to your hotel for the night." Lusamine said before turning back to the two children, a small smile coming to her face. "Sun."
"Yeah?" Sun replied, his expression breaking into one of confusion.
"Your father is a complicated man, driven by the simple desire of making sure his family is safe in a dangerous world. I understand him better than most, but there's a lot more to this I don't know. That being said, and despite his harsh methods...I know that Ashton loves you more than anything else in the world. Remember that." Lusamine said to the boy before nodding to them both, her smile becoming more gentle. "A parent's love never dies completely. I know that better than anyone else in the world."
"Madam Lusamine…" Wicke breathed, an expression of surprise on her face before she smiled faintly at her boss. Sun and Hau bid Lusamine a good night and the boys were ushered out of the room, leaving Lusamine behind.
"I can see why you're so worried about him finding out the truth, Ash...I wonder if my darlings would ever understand me if they truly knew how much the Ultra Space means to me." Lusamine murmured as she leaned back in her seat, glancing down at her hand. The veins on the back of her hand were bright red, a result of the Nihilego venom coursing through her body. Lusamine laughed softly before she suddenly clenched her fist.
All Oliver felt was pain.
"He's coming to." a female voice spoke up from beside him. The Dartrix didn't recognize the voice
His chest hurt so badly. His mind was...slow. Why was this?
"Excellent. Branch Chief Faba, the test subject has awoken." another voice spoke up.
Where...where was he? He remembered...that monster.
It attacked Penny. Oliver made sure it's attack didn't connect. And then pain. Terrible, mind-numbing pain.
Speaking of his mind, Oliver's thoughts felt very strange. His mind felt slow yet scarily fast at the same time. He wanted to fly. He wanted to soar away. He wanted to tear apart those who annoyed him. But he also wanted to sing.
Oliver then realized was he restrained to a table, with several powerful cables binding his body and wings. A large scratch was visible across his chest, though there was no sign of the blood or poison that had been there before. Oliver didn't get time to think as this as Elias Faba, Branch Chief of the Aether Foundation, stepped into the room.
"Excellent. It's incredibly rare to have a trained Pokémon to study in this capacity, in regards to the poison of the Nihilego. We'll have to be careful with this one." Faba breathed as strode across the room, his eyes gleaming with excitement as he peered over the Dartrix. Oliver opened his mouth to speak, but all that came out was a weak chirp.
"Save your breath. I removed your TACV for the time being. Besides...I'd rather not hear the sound of you screaming after what we're going to be doing to you, little birdie." Faba chuckled after that, reaching forward and pressing against the grisly wound on Oliver's chest. The Dartrix winced in pain and snapped his beak at the scientist, making Faba laugh harder.
"Ah, quite the spunky one. Well, no matter. I'll be nipping that in the bud. I am the one in control here, little birdie. Compared to me, you are nothing." Faba sneered, bending down to grin at the Dartrix as he snapped at him again. Faba laughed once again, stroking his goatee in thought.
"Hmm. The neurotoxin that the Nihilego Ultra Beast produces on its two longest tentacles is extremely powerful. Lowering the inhibitions of those exposed to it while creating feelings of euphoria and excitement." Faba murmured, straightening himself as the other scientists bustled around him. "While we've tested the samples we have managed to collect over the years on Pokémon, another test subject is never a bad thing. Especially on a trained Pokémon, who is already exposed to the venom."
Oliver screeched at the man, but Faba simply reached down into his pocket and pulled out what seemed to be a pen. He then promptly jammed that pen into Oliver's chest, where it discharged a blast of electricity.
"I don't care if you're a feral or a pampered little pet. I demand respect!" Faba snarled stowing away the device as Oliver twitched in pain.
"Sir, you can't go about hurting everyone who insults you." one of the men spoke up, glancing over at Faba.
"You'd have to kill everyone at Aether if he wanted to do that." a woman laughed, making Faba scowl in fury as he glared at his staff. Faba whirled back around and saw Oliver pecking at his binds.
"Hmph. You're quite the little brat, aren't you?" Faba sneered at the bird, who simply chirped at him. "You're lucky your exposure to the venom was quite brief. We were able to purge what venom there was in your bloodstream for the most part, so you probably won't die. However, the damage has been done." Faba remarked, shrugging after a moment. Oliver gave Faba an odd look at that, as if he was confused.
"You'll likely experience some difficulties, as a result of the poison. Your inhibitions will be lowered and you'll most certainly be more aggressive. And more seizures are always a possibility. I imagine there's the possibility you'll be like your old self and all will be well. Or not. Who knows for sure?" Faba explained to Oliver, who simply glared at the man. This likely had something to do with the fact that Faba was smirking at him, his own superiority complex making it very clear what he thought of the owl.
"Now, just because the venom is mostly gone doesn't mean I can't study you." Faba said quietly, a grin slowly forming on his face that made Oliver shiver. It was absolutely horrifying, and the fact that Oliver didn't have his wits about him and was tied down didn't help things.
And then...everything stopped.
Oliver glanced around the room, confused as everyone seemed to stop moving. Breathing. Everything was now nothing. Or so it seemed to the owl.
And then the voice came.
Hello again, Oliver.
Oliver's eyes then caught sight of a familiar yellow lizard that was sitting on the floor just within his field of vision. It had not been there before.
Oliver's eyes narrowed at the Anomaly as it grinned at him, standing up from the floor and calmly walking over to him.
"You! Get away, you abomination!" Oliver screeched at the Anomaly, who simply laughed softly within the Dartrix's mind.
Well now, that's just rude. Why is it that Wes and Vivian are the only two mortals that feel the need to show me anything nearing respect?
"Because everything about you is just...wrong!" Oliver answered, struggling under his binds. He couldn't use any moves and didn't have the strength to break free. Dizz simply stared at him, faint amusement visible on its face.
Pretty big talk coming from a prissy bird who got beat by some mud. And you don't even take damage from Ground-type attacks anyway. So who's wrong in the end?
Oliver flinched at that. He still hadn't managed to forget his greatest failure. The first Grand Trial Sun had against Olivia, where he allowed himself to be defeated in such a shameful manner. An event that still troubled him to this day, as his teammates got stronger and he remained stagnant. Even Finn was becoming a reliable fighter on the team…
So where did that leave him? The one who let Sun down when he was needed the most?
Dizz floated above Oliver, his tail extending dangerously as it became a sharp whip-like tentacle. Oliver shivered in fear, almost feeling sick due to the strange feeling of reality warping as the Anomaly existed in a place it shouldn't.
You're really having a hard time dealing with my presence. That's more likely due to the venom than me, actually...Ah well. I'll leave you be for now, then. I've already looked into what I felt like seeing, so I have no reason to be here other than simple curiosity.
Oliver didn't respond, instead he tried throwing himself forward as hard as he could. However, all this did was make his chest start to throb horribly and tear open the scab from his injury. Within moments it was dribbling blood and Oliver was panting in pain. Dizz cocked it's head, smirking at the Dartrix.
That looks painful.
"Sh-shut your mouth!" Oliver screeched as he writhed under his restraints. The Anomaly chuckled as it phased out of reality, appearing just above the owl. Oliver made the mistake of looking into the eyes of the Heliolisk, which were jet-black. It was like a void, drawing him in.
You should watch that temper. With that venom coursing through your veins, you're not going to be able to control yourself very well if you get mad. Hmm...That'll be entertaining actually.
"I can control myself just-erk!" Oliver twitched as pain shot through his chest, his head beginning in throb now. He felt very sick all of a sudden.
That venom...The venom of the Nihilego. Even just the smallest dosage can have drastic effects on those under its control. How fascinating.
"Didn't I tell you to shut up?" Oliver hissed, thrashing in his binds despite the pain he was in. He suddenly gasped as the Anomaly flickered again, this time standing on the table beside him.
You must protect the boy. The despair and regret is setting in. And soon the same will happen of Sun. Once you leave this island, things will kick off once again. You need to be ready. And you need to do better.
"You're not going to do a single thing to Sun! I'll protect him with everything I have!" Oliver screeched as Dizz, who simply chuckled.
You and your friends love him so much. I'll admit as a Protagonist he interests me, but I'll also have to see if this story ever reaches its conclusion. I suppose we'll see in time.
Dizz flickered out of existence and time began to flow like normal once again, with Faba walking away from the Dartrix and over to a table, where he began rummaging through a drawer. Oliver shut his eyes, hoping that whatever was going to happen would be done soon. He'd get out of here and tell Sun all about this.
Oliver opened his eyes and saw Faba standing back over him, a massive syringe in his hand filled with a clear white substance. Oliver had time to let out a gasp of surprise before Faba plunged the needle into the Dartrix's neck, making the owl scream in response. Faba allowed himself a cruel little smile, chuckling softly as the owl began to thrash in his binds.
"Oh don't worry, little bird. You won't remember a thing. I just want you nice and calm for what's to come next." Faba breathed as Oliver's movements became weaker and more sluggish. Faba chuckled as several mask-wearing Aether Employees stepped forward carrying strange bladed medical instruments that wrapped around their hands. Meanwhile Faba attached several patches to Oliver's body, which were connected to a machine at the back of the lab.
"The sedative is working. We can proceed once he's asleep." One of the mask-wearing Aether Employees said, only for Faba to shake his head.
"No need. The data will be sound regardless, and we're under a time constraint. It's why I didn't bother with anesthesia." Faba remarked as Oliver felt himself growing weaker and weaker, unable to struggle as hard as he had been before. Faba finished hooking Oliver up to the machine. He held up a simple tape-recorder, his awful smile widening.
"Trained Pokémon Nihilego Venom Test #1...Let's see how the vitals reacts to a controlled shock with the venom still in effect" Faba breathed as he threw the switch. Oliver screamed in agony as the electricity surged through him. He called out for Sun, for his team...But no one would save him from what Faba had in store for him. He couldn't even fight back.
He was simply too weak to save himself.
A few hours later, Sun found himself sitting on a comfortable and poofy bed, texting on his phone while Hau chattered away about how awesome the Aether Paradise was. Meanwhile their Pokémon lounged about the room. Oliver's absence was rather notable amongst Sun's team, with Penny looking rather downcast while the Brago and Finn seemed slightly agitated.
"Oi, Sun."
The Kanto-native looked up and saw Hau looking at him with his hands on his hips. "You good? You've been ignoring me for the past half-hour!"
Sun smiled sheepishly, holding up his phone. "Sorry, Hau. I was texting Lillie. She was really worried about us, since Professor Burnet and Kukui caught wind of something happening at the Paradise."
"Really? Huh. You told her we were fine, right?" Hau asked his best friend, who nodded.
"Yeah. She's going to be heading to Ula'ula Island tomorrow with Professor Kukui. Apparently Kukui has something really important to take care of over there and Lillie is coming with. He also made a few jokes about me and Lillie dating, which...whatever." Sun said, rolling his eyes. Hau frowned, but chose not to comment.
"So...What do you think about everything that's happened today?" Hau asked Sun, with his friend shrugging again in response.
"It's been interesting, but something about this place feels weird. Off, I guess. I can't put my finger on it. The people here are so friendly, and I really appreciate Lusamine telling me about my Dad's past. She and Miss Wicke are kind and helpful, and I think I can trust them." Sun said to his friend, shutting his eyes. "But I'm also thinking about everything I found out today."
"After so long, I think I'm finally starting to understand why my dad was so protective of me. And...I think Lusamine was right about her explanation making me rethink how I see my dad." Sun said quietly, with Hau walking over to his friend and sitting beside him.
"What's on your mind?" Hau asked, some concern in his voice as Sun opened his eyes.
"My dad...All this time I've just been solely thinking of him as some monster. A villain through and through no matter what, and that trying to think otherwise was just him trying to brainwash me. But now, I'm thinking differently." Sun said quietly, leaning back to fall onto the bed.
"Even if I wasn't able to get to experience what it was like to be a Trainer until I left for Alola...I never wanted for anything in my life. My father provided everything for me and my mother. Until she found out he was working with Cipher, we had an almost perfect life. I was happy. I was safe. I'm pretty well-educated for a kid my age and even if he didn't like the battling aspect of it, my Dad helped me become the Trainer I am today. It's because of him I like birds so much. I just...It was so easy to just hate him once the truth came out. But now that I'm feeling better about everything and can look back at things a bit more objectively…" Sun trailed off, unsure of how to vocalize his thoughts. Hau was there for him though.
"You're remembering the good and the bad now, instead of just the bad." Hau said to Sun, who nodded. "Not surprising. Didn't your therapist say something just like that? Focusing on the negative things your Dad has done while ignoring all the good stuff he did for you?"
"Yeah…" Sun muttered, looking away.
"I mean, to tell the truth, I have the opposite problem with my own father. He left me and my mother behind years ago because he hated being related to Tutu. I don't talk about him at all because...well, there's nothing to say about him. But it's hardly healthy, you know?" Hau said seriously, lying down on top of Sun's bed as he stared at the ceiling.
"Do you talk to him? Your Dad? Like, keep in touch?" Sun asked Hau, with his friend nodding in response.
"He calls on my birthday every year. Keeps me updated with how he's doing and let's me know how much he loves me and Mom. He supports us from overseas in Fuschia City these days, but that doesn't mean I don't resent him for leaving us behind." Hau said with a frown, shutting his eyes.
"Hau…" Sun murmured, feeling a pang of sympathy for his best friend.
"What I'm getting at, Sun, is that bottling up everything isn't the way to go. But thinking about all the awful stuff shouldn't be how you move on with this either. What I'm saying is that...I don't even know." Hau admitted, sighing softly before he sat upright, grinning at his friend before clapping him on the shoulder.
"I've got your back, no matter what. We're brothers, you and me, and I'll be around to keep your spirits up! Always!" Hau said cheerily, making Sun finally smile at him.
"Thanks Hau." Sun replied, his smile fading after a few brief moments. "You're right. Talking about all of this is why I went to see Doctor Cabela in the first place. And it's really helped me get out of some really bad spots. My Dad has done some terrible things to both me and Mom. He k-killed...he killed Nova and almost killed Mom. But on the other hand, he's also made me into who I am today. He taught me so many life lessons that I use today. Treating your Pokémon like family, always looking out for your friends, and to never hesitate to help those who suffer. I...For the longest time, I wanted to be like my dad. I idolized him, Hau. And I...I..."
"And you...what?" Hau prompted Sun, who looked away from his friend.
"I still...I still love my father. Even if I sometimes don't wish he was. He's made me so angry and upset with the stupid and awful and selfish things he's done, but that doesn't change the fact that he's still my Dad." Sun finished, his voice gaining a bit of strength.
"But…?" Hau pressed his friend as he stood up and chose to collapse onto his own comfy bed. Sun grinned at his friend's antics before he finished his line of thought.
"That doesn't change the fact that my father needs to be stopped. He's going to answer for the things he's done. Just like Wes said. My father is doing all of this for me. That means that if anyone is going to take him down, it's gotta be me! Bet on it!" Sun said with a determined glint in his eyes. Hau grinned and extended a fist out to his best friend, who reached over to Hau and tapped his fist with his own.
It was times like this where Sun appreciated Hau the most. While not the most serious of individuals, he was always there for Sun when he needed it, and Hau could be surprisingly insightful for such a silly person.
With that, the two boys settled in for the night. Despite the harrowing events of the day, Sun and Hau slept soundly in the beds of the Sanctuary Inn, ready for a day of exploration.
After the incredibly eventful first day at the Aether Paradise, the next few days seemed to pass in a blur for the two boys. Wicke showed the boys all around the Aether Paradise, explaining several aspects of the facility and keeping up a running commentary all the while.
Occasionally President Lusamine would join them, alongside several other members of the Aether Foundation. Sun and Hau would ask them many questions about how they functioned and operated in the region. Sun even learned about the fact that the Aether Paradise in the Alola region wasn't the first one created.
"I created the Kalos Aether Paradise Branch, or main HQ, when I returned from my honeymoon with my late husband. The finances were sorted and I had already lost the Champion's title once our time in Alola came to an end, so I was able to freely focus on creating a place where Pokémon could be protected by humanity. Our efforts put an end to several illegal poaching rings in Lumiose City, and encouraged other regions to put stronger protective measures in place for endangered Pokémon." Lusamine explained to them as they left the Aether Paradise Gift Shop. Hau decided to get a few key chains and a T-shirt that said, "I Met Branch Chief Faba and Lived!"
Sun and Hau spent a while laughing about that shirt, and decided to buy one for Lillie.
Sun decided to just get a fridge magnet and a postcard, though he also bought a snow globe of the Aether Paradise for his mother back home. As they departed the area, the quartet ran into a gaggle of scientists surrounding Branch Chief Faba a short distance away, with the man in question scolding them.
"What do you have to say for yourselves!?" Faba snarled, with two of the women in the group flinching at the man's raised voice. One of the men in the group spoke up timidly.
"It was just a small adjustment, sir. Ten degrees, nothing more, I swear. The break rooms are so cold. And Carrie's recovering from the flu. Can't you just let it slide?" the man asked Faba, earning a snort of derision from the Branch Chief.
"No! If you're cold, then go outside! The sun is blazing eternally in this tropical wonderland! There's no need to adjust the thermostat. Especially when I took great measures to ensure the electrical efficiency of the Aether Paradise remains at acceptable levels." Faba retorted, taking a step forward. Everyone stepped backward in response, and Sun heard Wicke sigh in annoyance. Lusamine simply watched on, her lips pursed.
"S-s-sir, please...You c-c-could just let us off with a w-warning? Docking a month's pay is...a little extreme, isn't it?" one of the women spoke up, though this simply made Faba straighten up to his full height, adjusting his glasses all the while.
"Don't. Touch. The. Thermostats." Faba hissed like a Arbok, his glare harsh enough that it could have paralyzed an entire room of people. Indeed, the four Aether Employees were quivering in their boots. "Now...Get out of my sight, before you really make me angry."
All four Aether Employees bolted at that, though by this point Sun was gritting his teeth in anger while Hau looked on with an unimpressed frown. Lusamine coughed lightly, making Faba turn around
"Ma'am..?" Faba said with a smirk on his face, dusting off his jacket even though it was pristine. "I'm sorry you had to see that. I've warned the staff time and time again not to go messing with the settings on our equipment. Keeping the interior of the facility cold is a must for the sake of productivity."
Faba then turned his attention to the others. "Sun. Hau...Wicke." Faba finished with some distaste, sneering slightly as Wicke rolled her eyes. "It's good to see you boys getting the grand tour. Education is important, after all. Oddly enough, I was just about to seek you all out."
"Faba, what did I saw about your punishments?" Lusamine said dully to the man, who simply scowled and crossed his arms.
"You are far too lenient these days, ma'am." Faba remarked, his eyes shutting after a moment. "A man of my rank and stature cannot allow even the most insignificant of details to pass him by. And if you do not hold your staff to certain standards, said standards will begin to slip."
"What did you need, Branch Chief Faba?" Lusamine asked, not pleased with the response. Faba wordlessly pulled out a Poké Ball and handed it to Sun, who gasped in surprise and grabbed it.
"How is he? Is Oliver alright?" Sun asked Faba, with the man nodding after a moment.
"We ran many tests on him. As far as we can tell, your Dartrix will make a full recovery. I'd say he could battle right now at full-capacity if you so wished. The real effects of the venom he was exposed to were more internal than anything else. If you notice any abnormal behavior from him, I advise you simply correct it and move on. I imagine he'll be right as rain again soon enough, though it's difficult to tell for sure." Faba explained to Sun, with the Trainer looking down at the ball with concern.
Truthfully, Faba had no clue as to whether the effects would be permanent or not. That's why he covered his bases. Sun would be none the wiser if his Dartrix did start showing problems. And technically the Dartrix was healthy, so everything was fine in Faba's eyes.
"Oliver…" Sun murmured, tightening his grip on the ball. Without another word he clipped to his belt and looked up at Faba.
"Thank you, sir. I appreciate your help." Sun said sincerely, making Faba's expression falter for a few seconds. Sun could have sworn he saw a flicker of guilt cross Fabs's face for the briefest of moments before the man smiled at him.
"Of course. As the Aether Foundation's last line of defense, I am more than happy to assist a fellow defender of Pokémon. Simply be more careful in the future, eh?" Faba said to Sun. The boy nodded slowly in response as Hau let out a low whistle.
"Aether sure is impressive. I bet Faba could give Professor Kukui and Burnet a run for their money!" Hau remarked, clearly amazed that the man had been able to 'help' Oliver in just a week's time. Faba puffed out his chest in response.
"Yes, I am quite impressive. If only others here at the Aether Paradise were as intelligent as you two seem to be. Then my talents would truly be recognized for what they are! Testaments to the genius that is Branch Chief Faba!" the man declared with a laugh as Sun and Hau exchanged a look of confusion while Wicke and Lusamine both sighed exasperatedly at the man.
"However…I disagree!"
Everyone present jumped in surprise as a familiar blond-haired man with a blue cowlick materialized out of thin air, wearing his usual smile and lab coat. Faba let out a high-pitched scream of surprise, though he quickly tried to cover it by coughing.
"Colress!" Sun yelled out with a grin as the man nodded at the child. Lusamine looked impressed while Wicke smiled at Faba's annoyed expression, now that Colress had arrived.
"Hello Sun. Hau. I hope you both are doing well." Colress said with his trademark politeness.
"Where in blazes did you come from?" Faba demanded, with Colress smirking in response.
"Remember that conversation we had about invisibility?" Colress said pleasantly, making Faba grit his teeth in annoyance. Sun and Hau giggled while Wicke subtly gave Colress a thumbs up. Lusamine turned her attention back to the two scientists.
"I heard there was an incident involving an Ultra Wormhole here." Colress said to Lusamine, who nodded once in response.
"It was swiftly handled, thanks to Sun and Hau. We're currently preparing to test the Aether Purification Chamber, Colress. If you'd be so kind as to head downstairs to the lab and prepare for Faba? He'll be down there shortly." Lusamine said to Colress, who nodded at the woman.
"I think that's possible." Colress remarked, turning around and walking away. Faba scowled, his annoyance emerging yet again despite his efforts.
"You're not going to teleport down there or use your super speed? Or some other invention you keep shoved up your butt?" Faba taunted Colress, who simply shrugged.
"Sometimes it's nice to just use your own two feet." Colress responded before walking off, making Faba sigh harshly and rub his forehead in annoyance.
"I swear, that guy is going to drive me batty." Faba muttered darkly before hearing a snicker. Faba whirled around, preparing to scream at Wicke, but Lusamine cut him off.
"Faba, I know that wasn't the only reason you stopped us. What else do you wish to discuss?" Lusamine asked the man, with him blinking several times before regaining his composure.
"Ah. Yes. Of course. Ma'am, we've got an emergency concerning a particular issue I brought to your attention a few weeks ago." Faba said tersely, crossing his arms. Lusamine frowned, staring down Faba with an unimpressed look on her face.
"And you're sure of it this time? That creature appearing yet again?" Lusamine said to the Branch Chief, who nodded.
"It happened right in my very lab. I caught it all on video, somehow. It warrants a look into if nothing else." Faba said sharply, earning a nod from Lusamine. "I didn't wish to broach the topic with you, but now that we're finished looking over the boy's Dartrix I believe the time is right for that discussion."
"Yes. Of course. Wicke." Lusamine said curtly to the woman, who looked to her boss in surprise. "These two are still in the middle of their Island Challenge, aren't they? Please deliver them to their next island."
"O-oh! At once, ma'am." Wicke said with a bow before turning to Sun and Hau. "I'll see the two of you to Ula'ula Island, then."
Lusamine turned back to the boys, a fond smile on her face. "As far as I'm concerned, you two are welcome here anytime. Simply inform us ahead of time with Rotom Dex if you ever wish to visit. If you need anything at all, feel free to ask me."
"Zzzzt! The President of Aether Paradise knowzz my capabilitiezz! I'm so honored!" Rotom Dex declared, buzzing from inside of Sun's backpack.
"Can do, Miss Lusamine." Hau said merrily, blushing slightly as the woman reached forward to pat the boy on the head fondly. After she pulled her hand back, she looked towards Sun with a softer smile.
"After hearing about you for so long from Ashton, it was a pleasure to finally meet you, Sun. I hope you're able to visit Aether again soon." Lusamine said as she stepped forward, surprising Sun by bending down and giving him a hug. Sun was thrown off for a brief moment before he returned the embrace, smiling now.
"Thanks Miss Lusamine." Sun replied as the two separating after a few moments. "I'll try and swing by soon. I really appreciated the talks about my Dad, and for you all helping take care of Oliver."
Lusamine waved off his words, grinning now. "Sun, after how you came to the aid of the Aether Foundation, I should be thanking you. So, I have a gift for you. I want you to use it well."
Sun cocked his head slightly in confusion as Lusamine reached into a dress pocket and pulled out what looked like a grey cell phone. She handed it to Sun, who still looked confused.
"This is an untraceable phone, designed by the International Police. Works the same as a regular phone, but it can't be traced by any modern systems. It also can contact any number in the world so long as you have signal. So long as you use this phone, you can contact anyone and they'll be unable to track you down." Lusamine explained, with Sun's eyes going wide in surprise.
"Why would you have something like that?" Hau asked Lusamine, who smiled coyly.
"That phone is a memento leftover from my Trainer days, but it still should work. I've programmed a single number in that phone...If you call it, your father will answer." Lusamine said to Sun, who's expression hardened.
"Why would you give me this?" Sun asked Lusamine, who offered him a small smile.
"Because despite how foolish they're being, I miss my darling children every day. I know Ashton feels the same with you. I don't expect you to forgive your father for what he's done, Sun. I don't think I would be able to, if I were you. But I don't think a phone call every now and then that your father can't trace doesn't seem to out of line, does it?" Lusamine said to Sun, who looked away. "Just an option, Sun. If you want answers about your father, he's your best bet. No one knows what your father is thinking, other than your father."
Sun looked back at Lusamine, his expression determined. "I'll think about it. You're sure he can't track me down with this?"
"Absolutely not. You can have that verified at any police station in Alola, or if you know any IP members." Lusamine said before she reached forward and patted Sun on the head, making the young Trainer smile at her.
"You boys be safe out there. And have fun. I hope to see you again soon." Lusamine said to the two Trainers, who both grinned as Wicke stepped forward.
"If you'll follow me." Wicke said quietly, walking past the two Trainers. Sun stowed away the phone in his pocket and followed Miss Wicke, with Hau close behind. Lusamine waved the boys farewell, a fond smile on her face as Wicke led them away. The smile didn't fade from her face until long after they had departed, with the woman in question shutting her eyes, a wistful expression on her face.
"Oh, how those peaceful memories from long ago taunt me so…" Lusamine murmured, a slight laugh escaping her before she turned around and walked towards the elevator. While the two boys had provided a delightful distraction from her usual efforts, now that they were gone she could focus on more important things.
Meanwhile, Sun and Hau had reached the ferry that would lead them back to Alola proper. Wicke laughed as Hau excitedly told them about his plans for the next island. Though he did take a moment to take stock of his time at Aether Paradise.
"I never thought I'd actually get to see the Ultra Wormhole in my life…" Hau remarked as they reached the ferry, placing his hands behind his head.
"It was definitely something, Those Ultra Beasts are no joke." Sun agreed, crossing his arms. He had received Oliver's Poké Ball back, but was waiting until they got to a Pokémon Center to examine him further. He hoped Branch Chief Faba had been able to help him.
"We've gotta tell Professor Burnet about this the next time we see her!" Hau remarked excitedly, earning a glance from Wicke and Sun.
"Dude, she already knows about the accident with the Ultra Beast." Sun reminded the boy, frowning at him. Wicke was also frowning, but not for the same reason.
"I don't know if what happened should be rightly described as an accident, but...I think it's probably best if you do so." Wicke said quietly, smiling at Hau after a moment.
"Are you saying…?" Sun trailed off, earning a glance from Wicke before she simply smiled at him.
"Don't mind me and my theories." Wicke said with a chuckle as an Aether Employee walked over to her, handing her a large white bag.
"Here's everything you requested, ma'am." The man said with a salute. Wicke smiled and thanked him before turning to Sun and Hau.
"Anyway, I was very glad to get to meet you both. Please, take this to remember your visit." Wicke said lightly as she reached into the bag and pulled out a familiar shape, the smell hitting the two boys instantly.
"Some malasadas for Hau…" Wicke said with a smirk as Hau's eyes went wide, his mouth going agape as a sliver of droll began to form. The boy let out a whoop and began hopping up and down in excitement.
"Yes! Big Malasadas! Awesome!" Hau cheered as he danced in joy, with Miss Wicke and the Aether Employee laughing at his antics while Sun sighed ruefully. Hau ignored his best friend's embarrassment, shouting, "Isn't it crazy how malasadas taste even better when you eat 'em with someone else?"
"Yes...I think I know what you mean." Wicke said as she regained her composure, smiling warmly at Hau. "Meals always taste better when you share them with the ones you love."
"That's true." Sun agreed, smiling at her words. With that, Wicke turned to Sun and pulled out a purple disc from the bag, covered in a plastic seal.
"And for you, Sun. A TM for the move Psychic…" Wicke said as she handed the surprised Trainer the Technical Machine. Sun looked down at the disc for several moments before looking back at Wicke.
"T-thank you ma'am. I'll make good use of it." Sun said to the Assistant Branch Chief, stowing away the disc inside of his backpack.
"I hope you both have wondrous adventures on your Island Challenge." Wicke said as she gestured to the ferry beside them before waving to Sun and Hau. Hau and Sun waved back at the woman, smiling at her.
"We will! Thanks, Miss Wicke!" Hau and Sun said at the same time, making the woman giggle in response. With that, the two boys boarded the ferry and took their seats…unaware that a very surprised Aether Employee was watching them a short distance away.
The man lowered the brim of his white cap, walking out of sight of the ferry should either of the boys recognize him. He knew that the chances were slim, but despite that he knew it was better to be cautious. Especially now that he was going undercover for this next assignment. Speaking of…
"This is Dawson, reporting in. I've infiltrated the Aether Paradise." The man remarked quietly, saying the words under his breath. The Admin heard another voice begin to speak in his ear from an earpiece so small it was almost entirely undetectable.
"Do they suspect anything?" Mask's voice rasped from the other end of the line. Dawson fought back a scowl, and kept his expression neutral as he walked through the docks with his suitcase in hand.
"Negative. Going dark." Dawson muttered before walking up to the purple-haired woman who had seen Sun and his friend off. The Cipher Admin had been extremely grateful that the boy hadn't recognized him, even though he had made some alterations to his appearance. His hair was now black, and his eyes were a dark brown color now.
Regardless, he walked over to the Assistant Branch Chief and bowed slightly, gaining the woman's attention. Wicke smiled at the man and bowed in return.
"I was told to report to you, ma'am. The name's James Knight." Dawson said to the woman, who nodded once with that pleasant smile of hers.
"Ahh, I forgot about you joining us today. Welcome to Aether Paradise, Mr. Knight. I'll be showing you around the premises before your orientation with the others. Please, come this way!" Wicke said cheerily before she turned towards the elevator.
"Of course, ma'am." Dawson said with a winning smile, making Wicke chuckle at the man as she walked off. Dawson's eyes drifted around the docks, taking in everything he could. His mission would depend on him being able to gather as much information on Aether as possible.
"Now then...Let's see if this place has many dark secrets as you think it does, Borlath." Dawson thought as he walked after Wicke, his smile fading for a brief moment.
"For someone who's supposed to be one of your closest friends...You certainly seem to think she's up to something dangerous. Let's see if that suspicion bears fruit, shall we?"
Malie City
"No! I don't want to! Arrrgh! Why won't you listen to me!?"
"I have nothing left to say to you, so why listen? This is your heritage, you little rat. So accept it. Walk this path, or never return."
"W-w-wait, what? You're kicking me out!? HEY! Let me go!"
"Ano, please...You don't need to be so pushy with this…"
"No, Lahela. This little rat needs a lesson that only the wilds can teach! He'll walk the same path all Alolans do, and he'll complete the Island Challenge! If I couldn't beat some respect into this boy, maybe the Island Challenge will succeed where I failed!"
All of a sudden the front door of a rather small house flew open and a black-haired boy with gray eyes was thrown out into the yard, landing roughly onto the ground. The boy scrambled to his feet, glaring at the man ahead of him. His father. A man who had made his life a living hell for so long had finally crossed the line.
"But I don't want to. Why can't you just get it into your deluded head that I don't want to be a Trainer?" Ashton asked his father, whose face contorted into something awful. Ashton flinched, a response drilled in him. He couldn't help it.
"You're going to do the Island Challenge if it kills you, Ashton Aupuni. I refuse to allow you to continue to bring shame onto our family. You're a Pokémon Trainer. It's in your blood. And I refuse to allow your weak will to taint our family's legacy." Ano said before tossing a small blue backpack at the boy, which he caught. Ashton glared at the man before Ano pulled out a single Poké Ball.
"If you think I'm taking that Poké Ball from you, you've got another thing coming old man!" Ashton snarled at Ano Aupuni, making the man smirk coldly at him. Ashton's eyes widened as Ano wound back an arm and hurled the back into Ashton's chest, knocking him down into the dirt as Lahela called out in worry, only to be silenced by a harsh look from her husband. Meanwhile Ashton was clutching his chest in pain, giving his father a look of loathing.
"Don't disappoint me any more than you already have, Ashton." Ano replied simply before he shut the door. Ashton heard the click of the lock being set and let out a scream of fury, getting to his feet with a pained wince. The 11-year old boy glared at the door, clenching his fists and the ball in his hand so tightly it hurt.
"I don't need you...I don't need anyone. I'll become stronger than anyone else...Strong enough to leave this hellhole of a region behind and never look back!" Ashton screamed at the house before bolting down the road. He didn't have a clear destination in mind, so the boy simply ran. He ran far away from his family.
Finally, Ashton collapsed just as he reached Route 11 as the sun was beginning to set. The boy lay on the ground, panting and shaking and trying to contain just how upset he was. Now he was stuck outside of his home with just whatever his father had given him and a simple Poké Ball. Ashton slowly pulled himself into a sitting position and opened the backpack he had been given. Hoping that there was some food or maybe even some supplies, Ashton unzipped the back and dug around. It was awfully light…
The grey-eyed child's heart sank as he realized it was entirely empty, except for one thing. A small object that was hard and made of wood. The boy grabbed the object and slowly pulled it out, revealing that his father had only seen fit to give him an Island Challenge Amulet. The wooden idol simply swayed in his hands, as if mocking him.
The child who would one day become Borlath screamed as he threw the Island Pedant on the ground, curling into a ball in the grass. Hungry, tired, and feeling so frustrated at his parents for throwing him into a life he didn't want…
Ashton began to cry.
He cried for the loss of the life he had known. He cried because of the so-called family that had chosen his path for him, a path he did not wish to go down. He cried because all of this had happened on his 11th birthday.
And worst yet…
Ashton Aupuni was all alone, now. And so the boy cried and cried and cried…
But these would only be the first tears of many shed on his Island Challenge.
And there we go!
Our boys are off to Ula'ula Island and know a whole lot more about what happened in Alola's past. Though how much of that can they trust? And what does Cipher plan to do at Aether Paradise?
This chapter was fairly serious. Next chapter will be considerably more light. For the most part, anyway. But there'll be Acerola and fluff, which is all that matters.
Stay tuned!

No, it's not just you. The Nihilego is kinda nightmarish when you get down to it and I wouldn't be surprised if Game Freak took a bit of inspiration from Lovecraft. Especially since the Nihilego can influence the minds of their victims and hosts. It's some freaky stuff.
With that done, I'm gonna barrel into the next chapter! Finally, after all this time, we're hitting Ula'ula Island!
