The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 262.
"It's always about you, " Ethan shouted.
The two brothers were standing in the staff room, Ethan yelled: "You are so irresponsible,"
Cal stormed out, he had tried so hard to change.
Cal had been taking a patients blood, but when Robyn had asked for help with her own patient, she had put her needle down with Cal's and the two tubes of blood had got mixed up, and Cal's patient, who had a rare blood, lukemia, when he realised his mistake he had tried to fix it, but he couldn't and the patient had died. Connie had tore a strip off him and then Ethan had done the same.
Cal got in to the car and drove away, finding himself on a motorway, he saw signs for a place he vaguely reminded his mum taking him and Ethan when they were younger and he followed the signs for "Conleth Bay"
He kept driving and driving, and found himself on a cliff, which looked out on to the beach; the golden sand, young children playing in the water, splashing each other.
Cal shut his eyes, Michael, had, had such a care free childhood, and in a few years, even though, Cal dreaded to think about it, he knew that he would have a painful death.
Flashback
Michael, 2, Steven 4, and Emile were at the beach, their mum, Emile, was looking at them, from the sun lounger she had rented for the day.
"Mummy, look" Steven pointed to where he had buried his bother, who was wriggling in the sand, trying to get out.
"Don't bury your brother, Steven. " Emile scolded him, but she wasn't really angry, she lived for her children.
Steven unburied Micheal and helped him get the sand off his body, before they headed to the water, but they stayed in the shallow end as if they went too deep, Micheal would get scared.
Micheal splashed Steven and Steven splashed him, until Steven decided to go further in, he held his hand out to micheal, but as the waves got higher, micheal become separated from Steven and let out a scream. Micheal reached for Steven and held up in the air as the water got higher. He swept Steven up in his arms as he turned and tried to make his way out of the water.
When they were making their way to their mum, the ice cream van arrived. Micheal turned to Stephen with a look on his face. Stephen knew that look, it was "Can I have an ice cream?" look.
Stephen nodded and asked Emile for some money and Emile handed him some money.
They went over to the ice cream van.
Stephen got them two 99's with two flakes, but as they were making their way back to their mum, some older kids, hurried past Michael, and he lost his balance, dropping his ice cream on the floor and tears fell down the his face.
Steven handed Michael his own. "Here you go, mate "
"Th-ank you Stephen" Michael whispered as they handed back.
"Stephen where is your ice cream?" Emile asked.
Stephen shrugged.
"Stephen gave me his ice - cream, mummy" Michael piped up.
"Why?"
"Because mine fell on the floor, " Michael said, licking it.
Emile gave Michael a hug.
Michael wrapped Steven in a towel and got him a drink.
"Boys, time to pack up, " Emile said as she packed away the picnic she had made and they made their way off the beach, heading home.
In the car, Stephen and Michael played "Eye spy"
End of flashback
Charlie, Connie and Zoe were muttering to themselves and whenever Ethan appeared, either to collect a new patient file off the Nurses Station or to expose of his gloves that he had worn in RESUS, the trio had gone quiet. Eventually, having had enough of guessing what was wrong, he burst out: "What is it?"
It was Charlie, who took him in to the staff room for some privacy.
"Ethan, sit down, " Charlie gestured to the couch, Ethan took a few steps towards it and sat down.
"It's Cal," He started.
"What about him?" Ethan asked.
Charlie seemed to hesitate when Ethan asked.
"Charlie?"
"He's at Conleth Bay," Charlie whispered.
Ethan stood up and ran a shaking hand over his head.
Charlie drove Ethan to the beach and the younger brother, prayed his brother wasn't about to do anything stupid, but he knew Cal would do something stupid when he was feeling scared.
There was a car perching dangerously on the edge, the cliff looked like it could snap at any moment.
Ethan's eyed widened in horror. That was Cal's car. He ran out of Charlie's car and towards his brothers.
"Cal!" He shouted, but of course, his brother couldn't hear him, due to the engine running and the smoke coming out of the car, it would soon suffocate him, if he didn't get out soon, Ethan started running to try to open the doors, but they were jammed shut. He looked around to see if there was anything he could use to break the door or even the window, so he could reach the lock and open the door. He found a rock and threw it, but it just bounced off. Ethan sighed with frustration. He found a bigger one and repeated his actions, it broke the window, but it also startled Cal.
"What the?" He muttered in shock.
Ethan put his hand inside the car and pulled the lock, he wrapped his arms around Cal and dragged him out, but as he did, he caught his arm, and blood poured down it.
The car slowly disappeared in to the sand, but Ethan was just grateful that Cal wasn't in the car. Ethan held him tightly as paramedics were called.
Ethan who had an arm around Cal, took him in to a cubicle and pushed him back on to the bed.
"Why did you do that?" Ethan asked, as Charlie attended to his arm, by cleaning it and then stitching the wound.
"I'm depressed, Ethan, " Cal said as he rested in cubicles, he wasn't physically injured but Charlie and Ethan most likely knew that he would be in shock.
Ethan stared at him. What did Cal have to be depressed about? If anyone had the right to be depressed, it was him: He had the dreaded gene, him and Alicia had recently split up.
"I feel like a failure," He elaborated.
"What?" Ethan asked.
"Not being there when mum was dying. I thought I could handle her having Huntington's, but I couldn't. "
"Cal, your not a failure. "
"I am, mate. "
"Cal, your not. You attended mum's funeral, I didn't. " At this, Cal looked up, when Ethan spoke, once more, "And that took guts mate, "
"It's my fault, you have the gene. " Cal whispered.
Ethan swallowed hard, it was true, he did wish that Cal had, had the gene but now he was slowly coming to terms with the fact he had this incurable, horrible disease, that was one day, going to leave him incapable of doing anything for himself, he was going to have to rely on Cal and careers and that was something he wasn't prepared to do.
As the curtain opened as Charlie placed two glasses of water on the table, he found the brothers lying on the bed, Ethan's head was resting on his chest.
Charlie shut the curtain and left the two brothers in each arms as they comforted each other.
