This chapter was prompted by HolbyCityFanfics with the prompt: Ethan battles with pneumonia, like his mum, while also dealing with having the disease and Cal rushes him in to the ED.

I'm no doctor so most of the medical information has come from Google, as it usually does.

Sorry if the description of this chapter grosses any one out, I was retching when I wrote bits of it.

The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 264.

The two brothers were in their flat, as it was the weekend and neither of them had work.

"Let's go to Conleth Bay, " Cal said suddenly.

Ethan looked at him like he was mad, it was freezing outside and he wanted to go to the beach?

Cal nodded. "Come on, mate. "

"Fine, " Ethan replied, it would be if they both wrapped up warm. Cal grabbed their coats from the banister and they walked out of the flat, with Ethan locking up, but as he pulled the key out, his hands started to shake.

"Are you alright?" Cal asked, his own hands, buried deep in his coat pocket.

"Shut up Cal. " Ethan muttered, embarrassed as they both walked down the building steps, through the door and to the car, Cal got in the drivers seat and put the keys in the igition. He pulled away from the curb and down the road.

When they got to the beach, Cal jumped out of the car and watched as Ethan slowly got out.

The two of them sat on the sand when Ethan sneezed in to his hands, and then he started coughing and then he coughed up some plemgh.

Cal looked at his brother, he sounded like he was wheezing, but he couldn't be sure without a stethoscope. Ethan leaned against Cal, but as he took most of his brothers weight, Ethan fell in to his arms, it was obvious that there was something wrong. Cal almost carried him back to the car.

"I need some help" Cal shouted as he burst through the doors with Ethan in his arms.

"Cal, what happened?" Zoe asked.

"He started coughing" Cal answered as he carried him through to RESUS, lying him on the bed.

Connie ordered a chest x - ray. Cal supported Ethan to x - ray (he refused a wheelchair)

Cal had to sit outside while Ethan was having the x - rays taking. In x - ray, Ethan was told to face the x- ray machine and then turn side wards. Then it was over, the two boys headed back to RESUS.

Connie did a FBC (Full Blood Count)

Connie wiped Ethan's arm with an antiseptic wipe as she prepared to took some blood from Ethan, and then tied a tourniquet around his arm, which would help her find a vein, when she did, she put the needle in and Cal heard Ethan whimper.

"Cal?" Ethan whispered.

"It's ok, mate, I'm here, " Cal said.

Connie sent the bloods off to the lab.

Connie almost snatched the results out of Robyn's hands and studied them, the type of pneumonia Ethan was suffering with was called Community Acquired pneumonia, it was the most common type of pneumonia. The results showed that Ethan had low haemoglobin. Connie walked back in to RESUS and started to question Ethan.

"Are you having trouble eating?" She asked, in a tight voice.

"Yes" Ethan whispered.

Cal stared at him.

"I don't feel like eating Cal. " Ethan offered as an explanation.

"Why?" Cal asked.

Ethan shrugged. "Not hungry."

"Oh, Ethan. "

Cal knew that pneumonia was difficult to fight off at the best of times, but he also knew that Ethan had an extra fight on his hands as he was battling an incurable disease. Cal had gone to the staff room for a quick break. But in that time, Ethan had detoriated. Charlie had raced to find Cal.

Charlie had warned Cal that him, Connie and Zoe had made the choice to put Ethan in a coma, to give his body a better chance at recovery, but even though he was used to seeing medical equipment on people in a coma, as he pushed through the double doors to RESUS, it pained him to see Ethan look so small on the RESUS bed, wires in and out of him, a pulse oximeter on his finger, an NG tube up his nose.

Cal took his brothers hand in his as he sat down in the chair that Charlie had left for him. "Nibbles, you need to wake up, " Ethan gave no sound that he could hear his brother. Cal remained in that position until Charlie walked in to him the next morning. He had bags under his eyes, his hair was sticking up and he looked like he had only had snatches of sleep.

"Here " Charlie held out a cup of steaming hot coffee. Cal took it and smiled as Charlie left them both to it. He nipped outside for some fresh air. He was enjoying the breeze on his face, when Charlie found him.

"There you are, " Charlie commented. "Ethan's awake, "

Cal raced through the hospital, almost bursting through the double doors.

"You gave me a scare there, Nibbles" Cal tried to joke, as he walked in to RESUS to see Ethan sat up in bed, his NG tube had been removed, and he had some colour back in his cheeks.

"Come on, " Cal said as he helped his brother from the bed and through the double doors. "Let's get you home, "

"Thanks Cal, "Ethan said softly as he walked through the front door of their flat, closely followed by his big brother, they shut the door and in that moment, it seemed like they had blocked out the world. Ethan curled up on the couch.

Cal's phone "dinged" He picked it up and accessed his texts.

"How is he?" The text read.

"Who was that?" Ethan asked, curiously.

"Alicia" Cal answered.

"Oh, " Ethan whispered.

"She wants to know if your ok" Cal replied.

Ethan nodded as his eyes started to drift shut, Cal sat by him and stroked his hair.

Cal let him rest as he knew that fighting pneumonia was a difficult thing to do and it left some patients tired, but Cal knew that he would support Ethan in whatever he needed while he got better.

A little shorter than what I usually write for the brothers.

Next chapter: Cal is ill and gets in to an accident, and Ethan is there for him. Prompted by C.
