The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 277.
It was a busy Saturday morning and Dylan was stood at the Nurses Station, writing up patient notes, when he noticed that the phone was ringing. He picked it up.
"Hello, Dylan Keogh, " He said.
"It's Cal, " The voice on the other end rasped. "I don't think I'll be in today"
"Why not?" Dylan asked
"I'm ill, " Cal croaked.
Any other person would have sympathy but Cal was known for trying to skive off. Dylan nodded in to the phone as he put it down and went to cubicles.
Ethan was in the staff room, glancing at his watch, Cal wasn't in yet, he knew sometimes, that his brother was sometimes late, but it was 10: 30, he was getting his things out of his locker when Dylan appeared in front of him, his hands on his hips.
"That brother of yours has just called in sick. Are you sure it's nothing to do with last nights rugby?" The man questioned.
"I don't think he'd go out and drink loads when he was on shift the next day or he didn't go to watch the rugby and I'm fairly sure he wills not get drunk in the flat he knows I don't like it " Ethan replied as Dylan left.
Ethan knew that Cal liked a drink, but he'd never drink when he was on shift, it was usually at the weekend or a colleagues party. When Dylan left the staff room, Ethan got his phone from his locker and called up his brothers number. He put it to his ear, waiting for Cal to pick, up, but after 3 rings he never and Ethan heard his brothers voice:
"Hi, this is Cal. Sorry I can't take your call right now, leave a message "
"Ethan, your needed" Louise told him, before he got the chance to leave one.
After loosing two of his patients, two young lads, Ethan went back in to the staff room to wipe his wet eyes and to check his phone.
"Ethan, do you want to go out for a drink?" Alicia asked, after the shift was over.
Ethan glanced up at her as he his head at his colleague. "I'm going to go home, "
Alicia was trying to hide her disappointment as she walked away and Ethan walked in to the staff room to change out of his scrubs and in to his normal clothes, he then picked up his bag and left the staff room, waving goodbye to various colleagues who were on the night shift and he walked out in to the cold air, going to the car. He started the engine, and drove out of the car park, driving back to his block of his flats. He parked the car and turned off the engine, before grabbing his things and getting out, he walked through the double doors and walked up the stairs and soon was standing outside his door, he got his keys out of his pocket and placed them in to the lock.
"Cal, I'm home, " Ethan said to his brother as he shut the door.
There was no reply from the older brother as Ethan took off his coat and went in to the living room, Cal was huddled under a thin blanket as he tried to stop himself being sick, but Ethan was in a mood.
"It's so like you to bunk off" Ethan lectured Cal as he did when they were in high school, he was in year 7, Cal was in 9 and studying for his GSCE's but he couldn't concentrate Ethan had tried to make him a study schedule.
Cal threw up and reached out for Ethan to comfort. The younger man had an idea, he went to Cal's room and got down on his hands and knees as he pulled out a box, it was full of Cal's childhood things, Ethan had one as well. He searched through it, seeing pictures of Cal as a baby, young child, his birth bracelet, and first picture as a baby. Then, he found what he was looking for: A soft, blue baby blanket that Matilda had brought him home from the hospital in. He put the lid back on the box and pushed it carefully back under the bed before standing up and leaving the bedroom, going in to the living room, he found Cal shaking with cold.
"There you go. " Ethan smiled as he placed the blanket around him. He then went to get his brother a glass of water, as he was struggling to part his lips and Ethan knew that, that was a sign dehydration. He brought the cup to his lips and encouraged Cal to part them. When he did, it was painful for him as his lips were cracked, Ethan hated that he was in pain.
Cal smiled weakly at his brother. "Thanks mate, " He whispered as Ethan sat down next to him.
"I'm sorry, " Ethan apologised for his earlier behaviour as he felt Cal's forehead.
Ethan could see that Cal was trying to fight sleep, like he didn't want to give in, but his eyes, kept drifting shut. Ethan knew that he would be too heavy for him to get him off the couch and to his bedroom. So, he stood up and went in to Cal's room, got another blanket and lay down on the couch with him. Cal began to fidget, which was rare for him, Ethan was usually the fidgeting one, but now the roles were reversed; Cal needed Ethan's comfort. He stroked his hair and encouraged him to take more sips of water. When the glass was empty, he closes his eyes as Ethan tightened his hold on him as his brother slept.
