The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 294.

"I'm all on my own. He's not coming back. "Ethan Hardy said tearfully, as he stood looking at the flowers, teddies and messages that had been left for Cal, not bothering to wipe away the tears that were fallen freely down his cheeks. He'd stayed awake last night, touturing himself about how much pain Cal must have been in. How long he had lain in the cold.

"Why did you have to leave me Cal?" He thought.

"I'd never leave you, Nibbles"

To Ethan, that voice, seemed, as clear as day. He rubbed his eyes, sure he was imaging it, he was tired, he'd had very little sleep last night, your mind can play tricks on you when your tired.

"Cal"

Ethan walked towards the wall, his arms outstretched, ready to hug his brother, but as Alicia glanced in the same direction, there was no one there.

Alicia was shaking her head at him, gently. "Cal's dead, Ethan. "

More tears fell then, fogging up his glasses.

Alicia hugged him, tight. "Your not on your own, Ethan, we'll all support you. "

Ethan seeked Alicia's lips, wanting some sort of comfort.

She pushed him away. "Ethan, this isn't the answer, your grieving. "

Ethan knew that Alicia was right, he should be concentrating on planning Cal's funeral. He had decided to have him buried next to both Emile and Matilda, his brother in the arms of their beloved mothers.

"Let me take you home. "Alicia took his hand and they left the car park, although to Ethan, it felt like they were leaving Cal behind, the thought of it made him want to cry again, but then he felt Alicia gave his hand another gentle squeeze as they made their way across the car park and towards Ethan's block of flats.

On the day of Cal's funeral, a crying Ethan looked out the window of their flat, to see it was raining, it was like it had sensed what mood he would be in.

The hearse pulled up outside the flat and Alicia gently led Ethan outside to see the floral tribute spelling out "Cal" and "brother "

Ethan, Alicia and Charlie and Duffy travelled to the church in the hearse.

Father Bill met Ethan at the door and shook his hand. "I'm so sorry for your loss. "

"Thank you, " Ethan whispered, his throat felt dry. He looked at the rows of benches, it seemed the entire ED had turned out to pay their respect's to Cal. Iain, Jez, Jacob, Ash, Max, Big Mac occupied the first two rows, while Charlie, Duffy, Zoe Connie and Tess took the row behind, and Ethan sat at the front.

'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies,' says the Lord

'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.'

'Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.'

"Cal's, brother. " Ethan had requested the vicar call him Cal. "Would like to say a few words. " Said Father Bill.

While his legs felt like jelly, Ethan, supported by Charlie and Alicia, stood up, and made his way to the stage.

He unfolded the paper and looked out at Cal's family and friends. Well, it was mostly, friends now.

"Cal was an idiot, but he was my idiot. And I loved him. " Ethan's speach was short but sweet and he soon heard clapping of his friends, for the brother who had sacrificed his life for him.

Some of their female friends wiped away tears such as Rita, Robyn, Zoe, and even ice queen Connie wiped away her tears.

Ethan, Charlie and Max rested the coffin on their shoulders, Ethan couldn't believe his brother was in the box, he knew one day, he would be reunited with him. Until then, he would live with Cal in his heart and memories.

Father Bill and the boys, placed the coffin in the back of the hearse, while they drove to where Cal was being buried, he was being buried at Holby cemetery, in a plot next to their mothers.

As Cal's coffin was lowered in to the ground, Ethan collapsed to his knees as Charlie helped him up, keeping a supportive arm around him, as a small pot of soil was passed around.

Ethan walked up and threw the soil as he stared at the name on the silver plaque.

Caleb "Cal" Knight.

12th February 1984 - 29th April 2017. "

We now commit his/her body to the ground;

earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust:

in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life…

The stone was secured in to place and Ethan started sobbing as Duffy's heart went out to him and Charlie put his arms around him.

As everyone left, only Ethan remained at his brothers graveside, he took a handful of soil before he threw it back to the ground, before standing up and leaving the cemetery, but then he passed his mothers graves and wondered how they felt now their son was in their arms. He pressed his fingers to his lips and then pressed them to each of the stones, before heading home.

Returning to an empty flat, Ethan realised he would never hear "Nibbles" again. He went in to his room and knelt under his bed. He found a box of old photos and put them on the bed, before taking off the lid, picking up a handful and flicking through them. In most of them, Cal was pouting, trying to pull Ethan in to the picture with him.

He put the pictures down on the bed and got off the bed, before walking out on to the landing and standing outside Cal's room, taking a deep breath, he pulled down on the handle and stepped cautiously in to the room, unable to hold back his tears. He walked to the wardrobe and pulled the doors open, searching for a top of Cal's. He found one and smelt it, it still smelled of him.

"Oh, Cal. " He said as he slid to the floor. Clutching the shirt, it felt like his brothers arms were around him.

Meanwhile, walking back from the cemetery, with his wife, Charlie voiced his concerns.

"I'm worried about how he'll cope. "

Duffy looked at her husband. "It'll be hard for him, for a while, but we'll help him. "

They decided to stop by his flat. Charlie rang the doorbell, waiting for him to answer. When he didn't answer after a few minutes, Charlie felt in his pocket for the spare key Cal once gave him in case of emergencies. Charlie checked the living room. It was Duffy who found the sobbing brother.

"Ethan, it's Duffy, " She said, quietly, crouching down near him.

"What am I going to do without him?" Ethan sobbed. Duffy hugged him.

"He'll be with you always. " Duffy said, quietly, rubbing his back.

Ethan sniffed. "I know. "

Charlie and Duffy looked at each other, allowing themselves a small smile as Duffy made Ethan a meal, knowing that if it was up to him he would most probably starve himself. She placed the meal in front of him as Charlie opened the windows in the flat, as it was beginning to smell a bit.

Ethan twisted the spaghetti around on his fork and put it in his mouth.

Once he was finished, Duffy washed the plate for him.

As the two elder nurses, got ready to leave the flat, Duffy kissed Ethan lightly on the cheek as Charlie told him to call them day or night, if he needed them. Ethan nodded, he appreciated their concern for him.

Shortly after they had left, Ethan wrapped himself in one of Cal's hoodies, which was too big for him, but he didn't mind and put on one of Cal's favourite DVD's before settling down for the night.

Thank you for reading, I enjoyed writing this one.
