Sorry this has taken a while to get up again.
Bronny9: Thank you for the review, glad you thought it was a good chapter.
Sweet - as - honey: Thank you for the review. I loved writing the chapter.
I wanted to get this up last night, but I got side-tracked.
The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 299.
"Are you ready for your first day back?" Jessica smiled as she read her friends text to her, it was sweet knowing that even though she had been gone for a while, she still had friends looking out for her.
"I don't know" Jessica responded truthfully. Her blue scrubs were hung up in her wardrobe and her trainers were still in the box, ready and waiting for her.
"You can always stick with me. " Zoe typed back as she got ready in her own apartment to leave for her shift.
"Thanks Zoe" Replied Jessica as she put her hair in to a pony. She left the flat and locked up.
Arriving at the ED, she went in to the staff room, placing her bag in to her locker. She straightened her scrubs up in the mirror and took a deep breath before walking out.
Lily was in RESUS working on a patient, who was refusing to undergo a procedure needed to save his life. Zoe had informed Jessica that she would be working with Lily, but had warned her to be careful of the doctor whose blunt bedside manner usually got her in to trouble, Jessica nodded.
"You need this procedure to save your life. " Jessica told the patient. "Dr. Chow has explained all the risks Mr..."
"Brain Edwards" He told her.
"I don't want that Chinese cow treating me. " Brain said, with an unimpressed look on his face. He had married a Chinese woman, she had aborted their baby, and for that reason, he hated all Chinese woman.
"I'm a good doctor, " Lily said to the patient.
"Well, see. " He laughed.
"You've had a heart attack. " Lily pointed out, bluntly. "If you don't have this procedure, the chances are you won't survive your next heart attack. "
Mr Brain looked frightened now.
"The blood will stop pumping around your arteries and you will die," Jessica added, something so harsh had never come out of her mouth.
"I'll be there, " Jessica said kindly.
Mr sighed his consent forms and was prepped for surgery.
Jessica watched the surgery which was being supervised by Lily.
Outside of RESUS, once the surgery was over, Lily turned and faced Jessica.
"Good work, " She said, reluctantly, Jessica guessed she wasn't used to given out praise.
Jessica nodded and walked off. Straight in to, Cal and Ethan arguing, she rolled her eyes.
Both boys felt a pressure on their back as they were pushed towards the store room, the door was opened and they were pushed inside. Before it was locked.
Ethan fumbled for the light switch. When it was turned on, both boys looked at each other.
"What the hell?" Said Cal, looking furious.
"I don't know" Replied Ethan.
Ethan tried his phone, but his battery was low and the "no service" sign was flashing. Ethan groaned, this wasn't his idea of fun being stuck in a small cupboard with his brother.
"You know this wouldn't have happened if you had just let me date Alicia. It's obvious that she prefers me" Cal told his brother with a smirk.
Ethan stared at his brother, just once he wished that Cal didn't think so highly of himself.
Ethan started banging on the door shouting "help"
Now, it was Cal's turn to roll his eyes. "No one is going to hear you, Nibbles"
Lily heard Ethan's desperate cries and unlocked the door, looking between the brothers in disbelief. Ethan looked like he was about to have a panic attack and his cheeks were flushed.
The three of them walked up the stairs to Connie's office where Cal explained what had happened, Connie listened and then left the office, the three dictors following behind her. She headed to the Nurses Station.
Who locked Doctor Hardy and Doctor Knight in the store cupboard?" Connie demanded to know, her hands on her hips
"I did" the usually quiet voice spoke, but this time, the voice was filled with a confidence that she had never had before.
"Why?" Connie questioned, an angry tone in her own voice. "It's unacceptable behaviour"
"I did it because the arguing between them is affecting everyone in the ED. in a way, I did everyone a favour"
"Jessica, what's going on?" Zoe asked. "This isn't like you"
"People change Zoe " Jessica replied defensively.
"Go home" Connie dismissed her., with a wave of her hand. "Your shift is finished for the day"
"Fine" Jessica shrugged her shoulders as she started to walk towards the staff room to collect her belongings, she come out a few minutes later and walked out of the hospital.
"Doctor Hanna, a word?" Connie asked after Zoe had watched her friend leave, she followed Connie up the stairs, to her office. Connie opened the door and sat down on her chair. "We'll?"
"She's a friend. She left the ED after the death of her baby, Charlie told me she was coming back. She's never fully forgave herself for dropping Harry, she blamed herself, it was trumatic for her Connie. It's no wonder she's changed" Zoe said.
Many other woman would have been moved by the loss of a baby, but Connie just sat that's as cold as anything.
"I'm trusting you to find out what is going on" Connie informed the consultant, who nodded and then left the office. As her shift was over, she grabbed her handbag and coat, before heading out and leaning against the wall as she searches in her handbag for a packet of cigarettes, she was supposed to have given up, but she liked having a cheeky one now and then.
Zoe sttepped in to the small flat and followed Jessica in to the small living room where there was just the one couch, a coffee table and on the cream walls there was two photos of two children and Zoe knew that they were Lucas and Amelia.
Beside that there was a smaller picture and Zoe knew that the baby was Harry.
Jessica came in carrying two mugs, one was filled with tea and the other of coffee, she handed Zoe the coffee mug before taking a seat beside her.
Zoe took a deep breath as she put down her coffee. She knew what she was about to ask could ruin her friendship with her and she didn't want to do that.
"Why are you acting strange?"
Jezsica notices the confusion across Zoe's face and smiles sadly. "It's just been hard settling in again. Last time I was here, I thought I was staying for good, but I found Harry's spoon and I realised how much I missed my baby" she sounded sad, as a tear fell down her cheek and Zoe hugged her.
"You can trust me you know " Zoe told her.
"I know" Jessica nodded as she stood up, and gave her another hug. She was glad she had at least one friend back on her side, she barely knew the lads and she was almost knocking their heads together, it was mean in a way. But she found she didn't care.
washing in go the bedroom, she shut the door behind her and got her phone out of her handbag and went through her photos, she had happy memories here but now she wasn't so sure she was the right thing. Oh we'll, she thought as she went outside the flat, to get some air, there was nothing she could about it now, she thought as she headed inside. It was like taking off a wig and painting on a smile. In a way, that's what she was doing. She smiled at the pictures, before picking up her phone and heading to bed. As she crawled under the covers, she turned out the light. As she closed her eyes, she was sure she heard a baby cry and it was then she fell in to a dream, she had often had since Harry's death.
Jessica's dream.
It was the cry that reached her first. Her baby crying out for his mummy, her hands were reaching out for him, to hold him in her arms. She looked over at Adam, who was kicking at the doors.
She hit the water peacefully, her baby unmoving in her arms, she faced a battle to keep them both alive. Breath Jess. She told herself, glancing down at Harry, he looked freezing. She should have tried to free him earlier.
Lights lit up the water, enabling Jessica to see what was around her. Dark water was the enemy.
She needed to swim, she knew that, but her arms felt heavy and if she moved, there was a chance Harry would slip and she wouldn't be able to find him. She hated Adam for abandoning the two of them.
Adam was at the surface of the water, looking dazed as he could their colleagues, calling to him, asking if he was alright and all he could think about was the fact his wife and son were trapped under the water, both of them fighting for their lives.
As he pulled her to the surface, their baby slipped out of her arms, falling in to the dark, murky, water.
End of Jessica's dream.
Jessica woke up, sweating her hair sticking to her face. Her mouth felt dry, she pulled the covers, which were drenched in her sweat, off her and placed her shaking legs on to the floor before pushing herself up and walking towards the door, grabbing her dressing gown on the way as she headed towards the door. She walked in to the kitchen picked up a glass and filled it with water, before taking a sip, and then another and another. Soon, she had finished the glass and she set it back down on the counter. She headed back up to bed. She climbed back in to bed and fell asleep.
"It was just a dream, " She told herself, catching a sight of herself in the mirror. Her eyes had red rings around them, her hair was sticking to her face, she removed her hair and tried to get comfy on the bed, tossing and turning, she needed to sort herself out, maybe a counsellor could help with that?
Thanks for reading, I enjoyed writing this chapter and I hope you guys are enjoying reading this. Again, I do think there will be gaps in this story, but I will finish it.
