The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 345

It was a week since doctors told Ethan that they were putting his brother in an induced coma, he'd been stabbed and after a few incidents where Ethan thought he might lose his brother, he pulled through and Ethan had spent every time he wasn't working, in his brothers room in ITU. He was exhausted, but had refused to leave his side, despite Charlie telling him "He needed to look after himself, as he'd be no use to Cal if he ran himself in to the ground. "

Ethan knew that Charlie was right.

"Go home, Ethan, I'll call you if anything changes. "

"I'm fine Charlie. "

Charlie sighed and put a cup of coffee in front of the young doctor. "At least drink this, "

"OK. "

Charlie left Ethan to it.

Now it was time for the ventilator to be switched off. Charlie had come to support him. The doctor explained that he was going to remove the tube.

"Come on, Cal, you can do it. " Ethan whispered.

The doctor unscrewed the tube, and put his stethoscope on, putting the metal on Cal's chest for any signs of life. It took a few moments but Cal took a breath.

"It's ok, Cal, I'm here, " Said Ethan, stroking his brothers hair. The doctor popped an oxygen mask over his face to help him breathe easier.

A day later after being examined by a doctor, who listened to his chest and told Ethan to bring him back in, if they encountered any other problems, he was to bring Cal straight back in. Ethan nodded, he knew this. He helped Cal get changed in to the clothes he'd brought him from the flat, a pair of jeans and a tee shirt. After signing Cal's discharge papers, he was free to go. Ethan led him out of the room, and to the lifts. The boys stood in comfortable silence as the lift travelled down and once they were outside, Ethan headed towards their car, but Cal had other ideas.

"Let's go and get drunk. " Cal said.

Before Ethan could say anything, Cal broke away from his brother and walked off in the opposite direction to Ethan. Cal headed in to the hope and anchor and ordered a whiskey. And when that drink was finished, he ordered another one, but then he felt sick and light headed. He went outside and checked his pockets for his phone until he realised he didn't have it. That was just great. No phone and no way of getting in to contact with Ethan, but luckily he saw someone. Someone who looked like Charlie and Duffy.

Duffy was linking arms with her husband.

"Cal, is that you?" Charlie asked.

"Yep"

Charlie walked over and put his arm around the doctor.

"What are you doing out?" Asked Duffy.

Cal didn't say anything as he threw up.

Ethan was worried about his brother, he was sat on the couch in the living room,

"Found himself outside the Hope and Anchor, "Charlie explained.

"Cal, you shouldn't be drinking while your on medication, " Ethan said, he'd told this to his patients many times before.

"I just want to get back to normal as soon as possible. "

I know, Cal, but it'll take time. " Ethan said, patiently.

Cal nodded, sitting down next to his brother.

"Thanks Charlie, " Ethan said.

Charlie left and Ethan helped his brother to his room.

Ethan walked in to his brothers room.

"I had a nightmare, " Cal whispered.

Ethan climbed on to the bed beside his brother. "Cal, it's ok, " He said, rubbing his back. Ethan went to get his brother a glass of water. He grabbed a glass from the cupboard, turned on the tap and held the glass underneath. He took it back in to his brothers room and put it on his side table.

The next morning, Ethan was awoken by a knock at the door. He put on his glasses and padded down the stairs

Alicia came to visit Cal, holding up a pack of larger.

"Hi, Ethan. " She said. "I thought Cal might like these"

"He's in no condition to drink. " Ethan replied, it was irresponsible for Alicia to think he was.

"I was only trying."

"I'll tell him you called"

Alicia nodded and left the flat.

As both boys weren't back at work yet, they decided to visit Matilda's grave.

"I miss her, " Said Cal, and Ethan was surprised at this as Cal didn't usually show his emotions.

Ethan squeezed his brothers hand, gently before kissing his forehead as they left the cemetery together.
