The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 428.

"It's Iain, I think he's taken an overdoes" Gem cried as her brothers lifeless body was wheeled away from her and in to RESUS where Connie quickly got to work, fitting him with a ventilator. "Do we know what he's taken?"

"No," Gem shook her head, unable to shake the image of her lifeless brother out of her head. At first, she had just thought he was asleep, but then she noticed his eyes rolling in to the back of his head. Worried, she'd somehow managed to drag him to her car, to the ED.

"Can you find out?" Connie asked.

Connie was standing outside RESUS when Gem returned, holding the small bottle of pills that he had swallowed.

"Where's Iain?" Gem asked.

"I'm sorry, Gem, there was nothing we could do. " Said Connie

"No," Gem said, collapsing in to Rash's arms.

Gem and Rash stood outside the chapel of rest where Iain had been taken.

"Do you want me to come in?" Rash asked.

"I've got to do this on my own," Said Gem, opening the door.

Iain was lying on a table, a sheet pulled over his face. She slowly pulled the sheet back. Iain's face, his eyes closed, with a tint of grey, stared back at her.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there Iain," said Gem, feeling tears raise as she clutched his cold hand, before she pushed his hair out the way, and kissed his forehead.

The night before Iain's funeral, she stared at the piece of paper, she was meant to be writing Iain's eulogy but she didn't know what to say.

Jacob, David and Charlie had been choosen by Gem to carry Iain's coffin. They placed it on the stand as a photo of Iain stood on top of the coffin.

"Iain's sister, Gem, would like to say a few words about her brother" said the vicar, Bill.

Gem unfolded the piece of paper, she had finally decided what she wanted to

"iain was my brother, my hero, I didn't tell him this often, but I loved him"

As Gemma couldn't read or write before she came to Holby, her speach to Iain was short but she was proud that she had managed to write it for Iain's sake.

Now, come loweing Iain's coffin in to the ground. Rash slipped his hand in to Gem's as they followed Father Bill to the freshly dug hole where Iain's "home" was to be.

"We will now lay Iain to rest," said Father Bill as it was slowly lowered in to the hole.

Gem leaned in to Rash as a small pot was passed around to throw dirt on to the coffin before the stone was placed.

The wake, which was held in the hope and anchor, all raised a glass to Iain.
