Ethan has the gene.

This chapter was prompted by guest: could I do something where Ethan and Ruby support each other over the loss of a sibling?

The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 569

Ruby was checking the ambulance was stocked as Lev was off as Luka had a chemo appointment, leaving her and Jan on shouts.

"Ruby"

The young blonde looked to see Lavender, pushing baby Harmony in her pram, Lavender then walked off saying she couldn't cope with the baby anymore.

Scooping baby Harmony up in to her arms, Ruby suddenly burst out crying. Harmony was so much like the mother she would now never know, with little wisps of brown hair, she lay her back in the cot, putting the blanket over her, but Harmony continued to cry. "Please Harmony, be quiet,"

Harmony ignored her

"Are you OK?" A voice asked.

Ruby looked up to see who was speaking to her, it was Ethan, he was standing in line at Honey's coffee cart, but when he saw that Ruby was upset he left his place and walked over to her.

"I'm fine," Ruby said, but it was clear to Ethan that she wasn't. He felt in his scrubs pocket for a tissue and passed it to Ruby.

"It's clean, " Ethan told her. "Shall we sit down?"

Ruby pushed the pram towards an empty seat.

"I'm fine,"

Ethan shook his head. "We both know your not," He said, quitely.

"My sister Violette," Ruby sniffed. "It's my first shift back, since her death, she died of an Arotoic aneurysm,"

Ethan nodded. "I'm sorry to hear that Ruby, if it helps I know how you feel. "

Ruby looked up. "How?"

Ethan licked his dry lips, how did he mention Cal without bringing Scott up? Truth was, he couldn't. It was 3 years since he was rushed through them ED doors.

"My brother, Caleb, he was stabbed, he used to work here" Ethan said, emotionlessly, but Ruby could see there was a lump in his throat.

Ruby placed her hand on his shoulder. She had heard about Caleb but didn't like to ask.

Ethan took Ruby to the spot where his older brother had taken his last breath, the tributes that had been left since his death were getting smaller, which was a sign that people were moving on but a faded picture of Cal still remained. "I'm sorry, Ethan" she said. "I never knew him but I'm sorry"

Ethan nodded. He wanted to help Ruby the way Charlie and the rest of the team had helped him since Cal's death.

"We could lit a candle for her. "

Ruby smiled, it would be a nice way to remember her.

Heading back to his flat after work, Ethan found a spare candle and some matches and he handed them to Ruby and they headed back to the ED.

When they got back to the ED, Ruby lit the candle and placed it down next to a candle for Cal.

"I've got no one to talk to" she said, bowing her head. "Lavender, my mum, blames me for Violotte's death"

"I'm sure that's not true and Ruby."

Ruby looked up, a small smile on her face. "You can talk to me anytime you like"

"Thanks Ethan" said Ruby as he walked her back to her place.

Thank you for reading, I liked writing this, please let me know what you think, I feel as if the show could have explore Ruby's grief more, I also feel as if they've made her forget about Violette too quickly.
