Chapter 1: "How many fingers am I holding up?": Maggie and OA

After finishing up their paperwork for the night, Maggie and OA talked about their plans for the weekend. "You started this, the whole YOLO thing, collecting experiences and all," Maggie said during their elevator ride.

"I know."

"Then why are chickening out now?"

OA looked down and mumbled something.

"What was that?"

He steeled himself and looked at Maggie. With a deep breath, he said "I'm not used to skating."

Maggie blinked. "So?"

"Mags..." OA groaned as they exited the elevator.

"What? We're not joining the Olympics, we're just there to have fun." OA still looked uncertain. "Well, I'm going to be there this Saturday morning," Maggie said, glancing at OA. "And I'd be all alone if my partner's not there." OA shook his head. His partner really knows what to say to get people to do what she wants.

Maggie showed up at the rink and saw OA already waiting for her at the entrance. She made a big bright smile.

"Come on, let's get this over with," OA said, turning to go inside.

"It sounds like I'm asking you to get a root canal" she rolled her eyes but followed him.

Although it's still quite early, the place was buzzing with people. Kids with their parents, a group of friends, and a couple in the corner. After they paid for their skates, Maggie sat in the empty bench and began untying her boot laces. She noticed OA just standing and not moving.

Seeing her raised eyebrow, he pointed to the skates. "Who knows who has worn those?"

Maggie laughed. "I knew you'd say something like that. Which is why I got this from Scola." She pulled out a small spray bottle from her jacket pocket. "It's a disinfectant. If there's anyone who would share your concerns, it would be Stuart." She sprayed the inside of her skates then reached for his skates.

OA stopped her then gestured for the bottle. "I can do it." She gave him the bottle and he did the same thing as Maggie.

As they stepped into the skating rink, they could see the wondrous displays, colorful ornaments and of course, the giant Christmas tree.

He may not celebrate the holiday but OA could still appreciate the meaning of the season - family, kindness, faith, love. OA was busy staring at the tree when two kids smashed into OA and they stumbled to the ground. OA cushioned the kids' fall and were unhurt. They continued skating as if nothing happened while OA stayed on the ground.

Maggie crouched beside him as another woman hurried over. "I'm so sorry about my boys." With the mother's help, Maggie helped OA sit up. After being assured that he's alright, the mother skated after her sons. Maggie then proceeded to ask him, "Okay, how many fingers am I holding up?"

Instead of answering, OA held her hand. "I'm fine. Help me up." Once he stood up, he glanced around the rink. Then looking at Maggie, he said, "It is a wonderful time of the year."

Maggie smiled. "Are you sure you don't need to see a doctor? It seemed like you bumped your head." They both laughed.
