The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 633.

Cal and Ethan walked in to the ED together, after stopping to get coffees at Honey's cart, Jade was in front of them. Ethan paid for the coffees and then handed Cal his. A coffee was the only way to start the

"Morning, boys" Rita smiled, standing at the Nurses Station, her nose in a patient file.

"Morning, Rita" Both boys replied, heading in to the staff room.

Cal come out first as he was the first ready, before Ethan for a change. "What have we got, Rita?" He asked, ready to work.

Rita handed him a file. "Liam Adam's. 30. Suspected alcholic, injured himself while intoxicated."

Cal nodded. "Right," He headed towards the cubicle, pulling back the curtain. "Mr Adam's, I'm Doctor Knight, but you can call me Cal"

The patient eyed him and Cal could smell the remains of alcholic on his breath. "Listen mate, patch me up"

"We need to sort those cuts first, check there's no glass in the wounds. I'll be back in a minute" Cal said as he left the cubicle, to get the equipment.

When Cal come back, pushing a trolley with supplies, he found that his patient wasn't lying in his bed, like he should have been.

"Rita, have you seen, Mr Adam's?" Cal asked.

Rita shook her head. "No"

Cal walked out in to the car park, hoping to find Mr Adams. He looked at the smokers wall, in his notes Cal seen that Mr Adam's was an alcholic. Cal shivered at this, his and Ethan's father had been an alcholic and had knocked him and Ethan around a bit, Ethan had tried his best to protect Cal from it, being the older brother, but still Cal ended up with a few bruises on his arms and legs.

"Mr Adam's, you need to come back inside. " Cal told him.

But Mr Adam's pointed a sharp tool at him. "I have a daughter, she's 1. If the sociol find I've been drinking, they'll take her away."

Cal put his hands up. "I won't let that happen. "

Mr Adam's edged closer to Cal. "You doctors say you won't, but your all the same"

"Mr Adam's-"

Mr Adam's darted forward, sticking the tool, which Cal was now recxongizing as a scapel, in him, before running off.

Cal slumped against the wall, beads of sweat on his face, a hand over his chest, blood seeping through his fingers as he rasped for breath, but it hurt. "Someone help me.." He rasped.

Adam and Jessica were walking out of the ED, hand in hand, ready to go home to her children, Lucas and Amelia when they heard a faint groan. Letting go of Adam's hand, Jessica walked in the direction of the hospital alley and whispered. "Oh, God."

"What is it, Jess?" Adam asked.

Jessica put a hand over her mouth as she realised who it was.

"Jess?" Adam asked.

"It's Cal, I think he's been stabbed," Jessica replied quietly.

"Put pressure on the wound" Adam told Jess, who nodded, placing her hands over his wound.

"Max, over here, mate" Adam said as he spotted Max having a ciggie.

Max walked over. "We need a trolley. "

Max glanced down at Cal and ran off to grab a trolley, bringing it over.

Together, Adam and Max managed to get Cal on to a trolley, wheeling him through the corridor.

"Adam, what happened?" Charlie asked as he and Connie come over to the trolley.

"Jess found him" Adam replied. "He's been stabbed"

"Right, let's get him in to RESUS" Connie said. "And let's try and keep this from Ethan, "

Opening the double doors, Cal was pulled over to the bed, Connie giving out orders.

"Let's do a primary survery. Rash can you do that?" She asked.

Rash nodded, putting his stethoscope on Cal's chest, he was breathing but faintly. He attached a valve mask to Cal's face and started to squeeze the bag. "He has bilateral air entry. "

"He'll have to go to threatre to remove the scapel. " Connie said. "Robyn, call theatre"

Robyn had bad news. Theatre was backed up.

Ethan, who had been in cubicles for most of the day, was curious when he noticed a small cluster of his colleagues sorround the RESUS doors. "What's going on?" He asked.

"Let's go and talk in my office" Charlie said, grabbing Ethan's arm.

Ethan pulled his arm out of the older man's grasp. "Charlie, just tell me. "

Charlie took a deep breath, aware that what he was about to tell Ethan, wasn't going to be easy. Everyone in the ED, knew that they bickered, but deep down, they loved each other.

"Cal's been stabbed. He was found by Adam and Jessica" Charlie informed him, Ethan swayed slightly but Charlie put a firm hand on his arm to stop him from falling.

"I've got to be with him" Ethan said, as panic consumed him. He burst through the RESUS doors.

Connie spoke, through her mask. "Ethan, you can't be in here"

"He's my brother. "

"Which is why you can't be in here" Connie said, aware it wasn't easy to see a loved one lying on a RESUS bed.

"He needs a chest drain" Connie said.

"I'll get it," Said Ethan, going to the draws where the drains were kept.

"His BP's dropping" Robyn called.

Connie made an incision in Cal's chest, Ethan felt sick as blood spilled out, as he stared at his unconcious brother. Connie put her stethoscope on, checking the drain was in the correct place.

Once Cal was stable, he was moved to a side room for rest, Ethan heading up in the lifts, Cal was wheeled in to a side room, moved on to the bed.

After a few days of rest in a side room, on an oxygen mask and a pulse oximeter, Connie was happy to sign his discharge papers, telling Ethan to bring him back if he experienced any headaches, vomiting. Ethan nodded, he understood the risks.

Walking through the double doors of the Farmead Flats, Ethan wondered why, for the first time, he'd brought a flat on the top floor. He knew Cal was going to find this difficult, but there was no other way as the lift was out of order.

Reaching the top were his flat was, Ethan fished in his pocket for his keys and soon opened the door,

The next morning, while the boys were on a "sick day" there was a knock at the door.

"I'll get it" Said Ethan, getting up and heading out in to the hallway, unlocking the door.

"Doctor Hardy?"

"Yes?" He replied.

"I'm police officer John Mason and this is my colleague, Olivia, we are invesigating the stabbing on your brother, Doctor Caleb Knight, we need him to answer a few questions"

"I don't think he's up to that" Said Ethan.

"We understand that, but it's inportant" John said.

"Fine" Ethan said, letting the two officers inside the flat and showing them in to the small, but tidy living room.

"Ethan, I don't think I can" Cal said, his eyes wide at the thought of going over his trauma.

"I'll be here" Said Ethan, squuezing his hand as he took a seat next to his brother as officers John and Olivia took the other couch. John turned to a page in his notepad. He sat up, ready to take notes.

"Can you tell us what happened?"

"I was treating a patient when I noticed he had gone missing. I found him in the car park, he told me he drank and then stabbed me"

After the police had gone, Cal had gone for a lie down and Ethan watched a documenentry about a new illness.

Cal screamed.

Ethan rushed in and sat on his brothers bed. "Cal, it's ok, mate" Ethan stroked Cal's hair.

The next morning, Cal got ready for his shift, he was on a half day as Ethan and Charlie didn't want him to overdo it.

"Cal, I'm scared, it'll happen again" Cal's voice had a tremble in it.

Cal froze as they got closer to the spot were he was stabbed. His eyes went wide and fear filled them.

"Cal, it's ok," Ethan said, stroking his hair.

Cal stuck to Ethan in cubicles for the day, until Ethan got a call. It was the police.

"Hello?"

"Dr. Hardy. It's John Mason. "

"Oh, hi. " Said Ethan.

"I'm afraid, it's not good news"

Ethan's heart sank. "Mr Adam's was found not guilty. "

"Damn it. " Ethan silently cursed.

"Thank you. " Ethan whispered, as the call ended, knowing he now had to break the news to Cal. He walked out of the staff room to see Cal at the nurses station.

"Let's go. " Said Ethan.

Once at home, Ethan sat Cal down. "I got a call at work today"

"And?"

"The man that stabbed you was found no guilty Cal. " Ethan told him.

Cal thumped the coffee table in frustration.

"How about we watch Walking Dead?" Ethan suggested, knowing Cal liked it.

"Sounds good. " The younger boy said.

Ethan put the DVD on, got the popcorn, and kissed his brothers forehead.

"I love you, Cal. " Ethan whispered.

"I love you too, Nibbles"
