The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 640
ED Re-opening: 5 Months Later.
"Come on, Cal, mate, you can do it. " Ethan encouraged, It was 7:30 on a Saturday morning and the brothers they were at the local gym, which was thankfully empty with Cal's physio, Sophie. Cal was on a treadmill, starting on a slow pace, trying to build up the strengh in his legs, but having not used the muscles in his legs for a while, Cal was finding it them saw that he had sweat on his face.
"Here" Ethan handed him a water bottle and and a towel as they were essitinals for the gym. It was important for people in the gym to stay hydrated. After they were done, the boys thanked, Sophie and started to head home.
Ethan unlocked the door and headed up the stairs, unlocking the door, heading inside, with Cal re-treating to his room, while Ethan made a start on their tea.
"How do you feel about returning to work?" Ethan asked, later that night, when they were eating their tea and were watching
"I'm anxious, Ethan. " It wasn't like Cal to admit to being anxious, but who wouldn't be after being caught up in an explosion?
"I'll be there" Ethan told him, giving his hand a "You won't be on your own, I'll be there"
"Thanks" Cal nodded, he appericated his brother supporting him at this tough time he was facing, it wasn't just him, it was Jess too, but she had Adam for support. The boys only had each other and without the other, they'd be lost, even if they didn't admit it all the time.
Ethan smiled.
The boys went to bed, Ethan deciding he'd leave the dishes until the morning. After making sure Cal was comfortable, Ethan headed to his room, took off his glasses and settled to sleep.
A Few Days Later.
"Right, listen up, everyone" Connie clapped her hands as the colleagues such as Rita, Rash, Zoe, Max, Ruth, Jay, Jay and Linda who had arrived on shift started to crowd round the Nurses Station "As you know, Cal was caught in the explosion, and it's his first day back. I want you all to make him feel comfortable. "
Charlie nodded. "You heard, Mrs Beachaump. "
"Sure thing, Gramps. " Jay nodded, standing next to Ruth, who was stood next to Zoe.
At the flat, Ethan had finished showering and was in the kitchen, making them both breakfast. Cal was still in bed. Ethan tapped on the door. "Cal, come on, we don't want to be late. "
Cal groaned, but took off his duvet and soon appeared on the landing.
A set of footsteps could be heard and heads turned around to see it was Cal, who looked like he wanted to run, but Ethan put a firm hand on his arm. "It's alright, Cal. "
Cal took a few steps inside, with Ethan beside him.
"Welcome back Dr. Knight. " Connie started clapping, along with Charlie, Robyn, Rash, Iain, Ruby.
"It's good to have you back, Cal" Charlie said, clapping the doctor on the back.
"Thanks Charlie. " Cal looked up to his surrogate father, the man he and Ethan both looked up too, considering their own dad wasn't in the picture.
"I have another announcement to make as well. " Connie said. "Jessica's given birth to a baby boy, called Alex." Older colleagues like Charlie, Tess, Nick and Zoe, knew that Adam had a brother called, Alex, who had taken his own life after a childhood car crash had left him disabled, so calling the baby Alex, was a tribute for the uncle baby Alex would never know. Connie held up her phone where a picture had been sent to show a baby, in Jessica's arms, dressed in a blue baby-grow, with a small mop of black hair.
Baby Alex.
Connie read the caption underneath the picture.
There were cheers and claps for the new parents, who were resting in a side room with baby Alex as well as Lucas and Amelia.
Halfway through their shift, Cal and Ethan, who were both in cubicles, Connie wanted Cal on light duties, such as cleaning cubicles, emptying bed pans, got a visit from the police.
"Is there somewhere private we can go?" the policeman asked, Cal gulped, this was going to be bad news. The police didn't visit if it was good news.
"You can use my office if you like" Connie said. Ethan stared at Connie, it wasn't like her to be nice, but Ethan wasn't going to knock her being nice, having been handed her office keys, Ethan led the way to the lifts, pressing the button, waiting for it to arrive.
Once it arrived, Ethan unlocked the door to Connie's office and helping to guide Cal on to the sofa.
"Do you know why he did it?" Ethan asked, sitting on Connie's white sofa.
The policeman shook his head. "He said he felt like it. "
"My brother got hurt because of him. " Ethan said. He hated people taken advatage of Cal, he hated anyone being taken of, but because Cal was younger, he was extra special to him as he was born earlier
"How did it go?" Charlie asked.
Ethan shook his head. "Not good, Charlie. "
"Why don't you take the afternoon off?" Charlie suggested.
"Thanks Charlie. " Ethan said, going in to Connie's office to tell Cal.
Leading him to the staff room, which was empty apart from Adam and Zoe, Ethan helped Cal on with his jacket. "Ready?" he asked.
Cal nodded. Being back at the ED on a half day had been tiring and he was glad to be going home.
At the flat, Ethan put a film on, poured some popcorn in to two bowls, made some hot chocolate and went in to the living room to find Cal on the couch, light snoring.
Ethan kissed Cal's forehead, before going to bed himself.
Thanks for reading.
