Chapter 22: One Last Chance

The room was silent.

"Come again?" Maddie asks.

"You heard me…" Danny said, still with that look in his eye.

''What?! Are you serious?!"Maddie asked, hoping he was kidding.

"Danny, do you realize what you just said?" Jazz asks.

"I know what I said… and that's what I'm doing." Danny said.

As everyone else looked horrified by this declaration.

"You are a fool…" Achak said, getting his attention. "The beast cannot be slain by mortals…"

"I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm not a regular mortal." Danny pointed out, gesturing to his ghost form.

"You still have a beating heart...even if it is faint compared to others. You don't stand a chance against that monster..." Achack said, frowning at what he said.

"I've beaten impossible odds before..." Danny said.

"Son, don't do this. That thing is obviously too much for you..." Jack begged.

"Your father is right, you would not stand a chance..." Maddie pleaded in a protective manner.

''I hate to say it but Mom and Dad are right. We barely survived fighting that beast and it's not like you had the best luck before..."Jazz said.

"Yeah dude. I get what you're all about here, but this is a bad idea…" Tucker said.

He knew everyone tried to talk him out of it. However, the ghost boy made up his mind.

"I am doing this. We survived the goblin aliens and we can handle this..." Danny said.

"Goblin aliens?" Frostbite asks.

"Long story…" Tucker said.

"One that was different! They were at least easier to take down as it was more of a moral problem, not a demon or whatever that thing is!" Jazz shouted.

"You're right… it is different." Danny said.

"I… I am?" Jazz asks, hoping he was seeing her point.

"The Goblins were aliens, or more accurately, repeated clones of aliens. They just wanted to go home before they decided to attack us out of spite… The Wendigo… is a monster. And not just literally…" Danny responded.

"That just proves our point. Do you even have a real plan?" Jazz asks, upset he's not listening.

"I'm positive… besides, I've already managed to hurt him." Danny said.

That got Achak's attention.

"You have?" He asks.

With a nod, Danny clarified.

"I hit him with a shot of ghostly fire, something I'm not too familiar with. It actually hurt him. His regeneration was taking longer with that than anything else, too. If I can hurt him, that means I can do worse." Danny said.

"Even so… hurting him doesn't mean you can end his life." Frostbite pointed out.

"But his regeneration was slower. This whole time, we've never been able to hurt him… until now. His regeneration clearly took time, that means there's a limit to what he can take and how much he can take." Danny points out in response.

Everyone was silent for a moment, starting to see his point yet still filled with uncertainty.

"Even so, such a risk is great..." Achack said.

"Can't we just… send him somewhere warmer?" Jack asks.

"That's too much of a risky chance… this needs to end… now." Danny said.

''You are going against an enemy far more powerful and evil, perhaps you should listen to your family, Great One..." Frostbite said.

"I have family being transformed from a curse by that thing.." Danny said, being serious.

Realizing that they can't change his mind, Danny's parents both let out defeated breaths before approaching him..

'If you're sure… we're with you." Maddie said with an uneasy expression, realizing that all they can do is support him.

"Let's gear up…" Jack went.

"Actually…" Danny said. "...it's me he wants, so I'm going on my own."

That made his parents react in the expected way after a moment.

"Out of the question! Not happening." Maddie said.

"Sorry Mom… but I made up my mind. Besides, I have a plan." Danny said.

"You do?" Jazz asks.

"What? You think my plan was to shoot fireballs at him until he stops healing? I'm taking the fight to where those trucks the news said were. The ones with the old nasty sauce." Danny said.

"The combustible one they swapped out?" Tucker asks.

"No, the one that tastes like strawberry." Danny said with a deadpan tone.

''I see you feel healthy enough to be sarcastic..." Tucker snarked as everyone else questioned him on what he intended to do.

"So, your plan is to… lure him there, fight him and explode the area with that stuff?" Jazz asks.

"You're all smart… how powerful would 3-5 trucks filled with explosive sauce be when it goes boom?" Danny asks.

His father only shrugged comically as his mother did the math in her head..

"Enough to probably blow the city to pieces… which only further justifies getting rid of it." Maddie said.

"There you go… the heat from that should be more than enough." Danny pointed out.

''But it's too crazy... even by my standards..."Jack said.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures..." Danny said, wanting to leave and finish the task.

"Okay… well… we can't stop you. All we can do is wish for the best." Maddie said.

"You might wanna gear up yourself though." Jack said before he smiled at an idea. "Let me at least help with that…"

10 minutes later

Danny Phantom stepped out of the house, wearing something extra.

To hide what he's carrying and more, Danny put on a dark cloak with a hood. Resembling the grim reaper himself, Danny took a breath and turned his head to everyone.

"I'll be back, I promise…" He said with an assuring smile.

"This getup you're wearing doesn't make that sound reassuring..." Jazz mumbled, not making eye contact as she was still worried about him.

"Be careful, Danny. I can't lose two children in one night..."Maddie said, hands at her chests as if she afraid her heart would explode.

"You won't, I promise..." Danny answered.

"May fate be at your side, Great One..." Frostbite said, saluting him.

"You better be back… I don't want this to be how Sam gets off her high horse on eating meat…" Tucker went, trying to lighten the mood.

Only a crack of a smile from his best friend appeared, showing it somewhat worked.

As Danny was about to go, one spoke up.

"Phantom?" Achak asks.

Turning his head, Danny saw the hunter approach.

"Yeah?" Danny asks.

Achak, despite not needing breath, took a deep one.

"What are you doing… is a foolish, dangerous and almost suicidal action…" Achak said, though his expression softened the more he saw the determination on Danny's face. "... one that I'm willing to entertain… if only because nothing will stop you… and at this point, I will do anything to see my daughter again…" He went, a look of desperation on his face.

With a nod, Danny started to fly towards his destination.

''I'll be back. I swear." Danny said.

Once he was out of sight, optimism for him slowly faded from them as they walked silently into the snowing night sky.

"Godspeed, Son…" Jack said under his breath.

The winds were strong, almost strong enough to knock him off course. He would have hurried, but realized he should conserve his strength for what he was about to do.

Upon landing, Danny started walking towards where he knew several revenants were, only for his ghost sense to go off.

Hearing the sound, he ducked out of the way to dodge a missile. He turned around and saw who it was.

"Where do you think you're going?" Walker asks with a grin.

Before him was the Revenge Squad, back for more.

"I knew we'd find you after we made sure to stay out of that monster's path. I'll add his pelt after I've claimed yours." Skulker stated.

Ember looked to Danny in an almost apologetic manner, but neither said anything.

Danny kept his head down, the hood blocking the sight of his eyes.

He made no move, no effort fight back, just remain still.

"Now it's pay back time, whelp..." Skulker said, aiming his arm cannon at him.

Danny said nothing, nor did the expression on his face change as he bobbed away from the blast.

He stood still, the cape of the robe flowing in the wind.

"Drama…" Ghost Writer went in awe before Walker backhanded him in the head.

"Shut up." He went.

"What's this? No witty banter?" Skulker mocked.

However, to his shock, something unexpected happened.

Danny walked towards them, not an ounce of fear or weakness in his body.

Before all of them could attack, Danny reacted. He bobbed his head away from Bullet, grabbing his arm and flipping him into Walker to knock them both out. The meaty form of the Lunch Lady appeared to hit him, but Danny simply pressed his hand into her, freezing her lower half before pushing her to fall atop the Box Ghost and the Ghost Writer, knocking them out.

"Shadow! Get him!" Johnny 13 went.

Johnny's shadow flew towards Danny, only for Phantom to respond with a brief flash of light from his hand, making the Shadow stop to clear its eyes before Danny froze it in ice, causing it to fall.

Kitty then slid in behind Danny.

"Nothing personal." She said before blowing a kiss.

In response, Danny used his duplication power to split apart, avoiding the kiss as it hit Johnny.

"Aww not again!" He went, disappearing from sight.

Kitty gasped, kissing again to bring him back. She was distracted from Danny sweep kicking her into the ground. Johnny, seeing his girlfriend down, attempted to punch Danny, who caught the fist, twisted it to hurt Johnny, then threw him into a street light.

Desiree flew in to fire at Danny from behind, prompting him to raise a shield to reflect the shot back at her, knocking her down.

Technus appeared before Danny.

"There's a hint of emotion, child! Emotions are your great-"

Technus didn't get to finish as Danny punched him in the face with enough force to break his glasses.

Those still able to fight gasped at this, seeing Danny acting different, far less jokey or emotional than usual. He was cold, like the temperature, and quiet.

As Technus took a knee, holding onto his nose as he cried out in pain, Spectra flew in and grabbed Danny from behind.

"Let's get a taste of that misery, shall we?" She asks.

"No." Danny said flatly before he clenched his fist.

That's when Spectra felt something that made her gasp. Looking down, she saw her side cut slightly from a green energy blade from Danny's fist.

"ACK!" She went, pulling back and holding her side. "What did you do?!" She questioned.

"I got this!" Betrand went, transforming into a jungle cat and attempting to pounce Danny.

He didn't make it in time, Danny pulled back slightly to avoid it before grabbing the tail and slamming Bertrand into the ground.

"What's going on?! How is he so… better than usual?" Spectra asks, distracted from this display before Danny swung Bertrand into her, knocking her out.

Ember was momentarily speechless when she saw this.

"Huh...nice moves..." She admitted.

To her surprise, he didn't even glance at her. It got on her nerves, though part of her was relieved given how he took ghosts that normally gave him trouble down, even if briefly, with ease.

"I'm going to the Wendigo…" Danny said out loud, getting everyone's attention.

"What?!" They all went.

"You're in my way… bother me some other time… because I have someone else to deal with." He said, sounding not at all quippy or light hearted.

"Like we're leaving…" Walker said as he got up.

"Yeah!" The Box Ghost went as he, the Lunch Lady and the Ghost Writer said as they dug themselves out of the meat.

"I don't know… I don't mind leaving…" Desiree went as she held her arms around herself to keep warm. "The cold is starting to get to me again…"

"Never! I didn't form this group just so you can say "sorry, not now!". Your pelt is mine!" Skulker growled as he pointed a missile at him.

"Uh… maybe he's got a point?" Kitty went as Johnny nodded, both clearly seeing Danny isn't as overwhelmed as usual.

"No!" Skulker shouted as he fired his missile.

In a split second, Danny created a sword and cut the missile in half, right down the middle, with both pieces flying to his left and right before exploding, much to everyone's surprise.

"Move..." Was all Danny said.

"Come again?" Skulker asked, raising a brow.

"I said...move..." Danny said in a suspiciously calm voice as he slowly walked towards Skulker.

Skulker scoffed.

"And why would I do that? The hunter doesn't release his prey when he has him surrounded! You might be doing oddly well now… but you'll tire out! You're not stronger, you're just fighting smarter! What could possibly convince me that I won't tire you out before I end you?!" He shouted his question.

That's when Danny stood before him, his head still down.

"Because…" His head moved up. "... I have to save two people I care for… and you're in my way."

Skulker was ready to dismiss what he said. However, what he saw in Danny's eyes shocked him.

He didn't see just anger. No, he saw killing intent. Something he had never seen from the ghost boy before, even when he was hunting him. It shocked the hunter to say the least.

"You're going to slay the Wendigo, aren't you?" Skulker asks.

"No duh…" He said with a low voice.

The other ghosts looked about ready to fight him, only for Skulker to hold his hand out.

"Let him through..." Skulker said.

"What?! Why?!" All but Ember argued.

"I said let him through!" Skulker shouted.

Though questioning his request, all of them did as he ordered, backing away.

Danny flew off, while the revenge squad wondered what just happened.

"Why did you do that Skulker?" Ember asked her ex.

"The whelp isn't kidding around this time. He is determined to hunt down The Wendigo. I could see it in his eyes… the hate, something I've never seen before..." Skulker answered.

Ember was stunned to hear that as well as growing worried.

"Baby Pop..." She whispered.

"What now?" Johnny questioned.

"Urgh… it's too cold for revenge anyway… let's just go home…" Walker complained.

Once the others left to the Ghost Zone, Ember decided to go after her "not exactly" boyfriend.

With Danny

He landed not far from where he knew where the revenants were.

He saw it, a hospital. He saw dozens of them, the skinny variety and the taller, hairier variety. He knew they were waiting for midnight, when they would attack and injure people, taking minor body parts that would have still negatively affected their lives.

As much as this angered and disgusted him, he knew what he had to do to get rid of the bigger problem. and so, he took a step forward. He pressed his foot in the snow so hard that it made a very loud sound.

The revenant creatures turned their heads in his direction. All of them snarled at their master's target before running towards him on all fours. However, Danny wasn't remotely scared, evident by the same scowl on his face as he had earlier. He waited until they scurried closer until finally raising his hand. Having faced him enough times, they assume he was about to blast when they paused.

However, something else happened.

"I know you're watching…" Danny said as he lowered his arm. "I accept your challenge." He then pointed outward. "There's a truck stop about 30 miles out of town, where your snow still reaches. Send your bird if you have to to locate me… but show up there. You want me? Come alone… no revenants of any type, not even Hedwig to give you a hand. Just you…"

With that, he turned around and started to walk before hovering and flying off while keeping close to the ground.

Somewhere, the Wendigo snickers as he hears this.

"Good…" He said before getting up from where he was.

Stepping out, which was the zoo as he nested in what was the lion's den, with the skull of a lion nearby.

He took in a deep breath in anticipation for the fight he'll have.

He then saw several of his revenants. Dozens, if not hundreds, had followed him through the portal before it closed.

"I'll have more of you soon… but for now…" He motioned them to get closer with his long finger. "I need to bulk up…"

Many revenants got closer, remaining still as he took a step and bit one.

Danny continued his path to where he will face the Wendigo.

He didn't bother thinking of anything else right now. The only thing on his mind was his best friend, and ex-girlfriend, as well as his little sister, and his partner in Ghost fighting.

Danielle… Sam… Danny thought in sorrow and determination. I will break the curse and set you free. I promise.

His ghost sense went off again. Angered, he stopped.

"I don't have the time or the patience to deal with anyone else right now." Danny said in irritation.

"I'm not here to fight, Danny." Ember said quickly.

Turning his head, Danny saw Ember standing several feet away from him, slowly walking toward him.

"What do you want, Ember?" Danny had asked, his voice making it clear that he wants this to be done quickly.

Ember stopped, standing about 3 feet away from him.

"What exactly is your plan?" she had asked him.

"To put it simply, I'm going to set him on fire. It's more than that, but that's the gist." He said.

"Right… right…" Ember went, holding her chin in thought. "Those things hated the heat, so he'd hate it too." He lowered her hand. "Let me come with."

"Sorry… but it has to be me. I'm the one he wants, and I challenged him to come alone. Besides…" He turned his back to her. "I'm not risking someone else getting hurt when those trucks explode…" He said.

As he started walking away, Ember scratched her chin in thought.

"Trucks? Those things with the sauce the FDA somehow said yes to? That's your plan?" She questioned in disbelief.

"What of it?" Danny asks.

"How do you know it'll be hot enough?" She asks.

"One packet was enough to almost level the Nasty Burger… I figure at least 3 trucks is more than enough…" He said.

"It could be… or…" Ember went with a sly smile. "You could bring in some more heat. Without me being there, of course."

Danny stopped in his tracks,

"I'm listening…" He said, not bothering to look back.

With a smile, Ember put a hand on her shoulder.

"Let me show you a trick." She said as her ponytail wrapped around them.

Somewhere, outside of Amity Park

Danny was stunned as the blue flames disappeared, causing him to see he's somewhere else. Someplace with many rocks and no snow.

Angered, he looked back at Ember.

"What's going on?! Why did you take me here? And…" He now noticed the temperature rose. "Why is it so hot?" He asks, putting the hood down.

"We're in Hawaii… I was here for a little vacay once. This…" Ember gestured to the area. "... is Mauna Loa!"

Danny turned his head to see he was looking at an active volcano, lava seen from afar.

"I remember hearing about. An active volcano?" Danny asks.

"The largest one." Ember stated.

"Why are we here?" He asks, starting to sweat.

"I've noticed you got this thing where you develop powers whenever it best suits you. So… I figure I could give you a crash course on teleporting. You can send Slim here during your fight. The heat here should be more than enough. Send the trucks here too, overkill ain't an issue with this guy." Ember said with a smile.

Danny pondered, realizing this location would be inhospitable for the Wendigo..

"That could actually work…" He said.

"I could do it for you… but I get you wanna do this yourself. Besides, I'd rather stay as far away from him. Even if I don't look like a meal to him, he'll still try to bite my face off." Ember said.

"Valid." Danny responded.

"So? Give it a try…" Ember said, motioning for him to attempt it.

"How exactly do I do...this?" Danny asked.

"Just think of a place, concentrate and let's see if you can teleport there..." Ember advised.

"Really?" He asked incredulously.

"That's how I;ve always done it ..." Ember explained while nodding.

Danny tried to think of the outside of his house, hoping to will himself there. It took 10 seconds of him straining himself with thought but nothing happened.

"Nothing..." He muttered in frustration.

"Well, I guess that was kinda a long shot..." Ember admitted.

Danny tried to think of something else. He recalled some ghosts, including one in particular, could create portals with the wave of their hands.

''Maybe I can make a portal or something..." He suggested.

"Think you can?" Ember asked. "That's not exactly common…"

"I gotta try..." Danny said since he had little time to spare.

"If you say so…" Ember said as she stepped back to watch him extend his arm out, his hand acting as if reaching for something.

After a few seconds of concentrating, Danny managed to make a portal. One that led to his house. Snow fell through and the winds hit them, but it didn't matter to him.

"It worked!" He cheered.

However, it was short-lived as the portal only lasted for 3 seconds before it vanished.

"Well… it did." Ember pointed out.

Danny's smile dropped quickly

"Darn it!" He muttered.

He tried again, but the same thing happened. Danny tried to make another portal that only existed for so long.

"Huh… an improvement. It took 3.2 seconds." Ember snarked.

After a few moments of mental strain, he managed to make a bigger portal However, this was one that lasted for one second.

"OH COME ON!" Danny shouted, frustrated as he kicked a rock into the nearby lava.

"I guess it'll be a while until you get it right. Also, the bigger the portal, the more power it exhausts before closing..." Ember bemoaned, realizing how ineffective it was.

"Maybe having you there could be a help…" Danny wondered out loud before something came to his mind. "Wait… would you teleporting him here be like Kitty's kiss?"

"Come again?" Ember questioned.

"The power, I mean. Frostbite explained that some powers are less effective against beings more powerful. Would teleporting him count as one of those powers?" Danny asks.

Realizing his point, Ember slapped herself on the forehead.

"Duh… if he's that much stronger than me, I could only do that if I had his consent." She complained out loud for not recalling that.

"In other words... Opening a portal would be the better option. Or… it would be if it didn't fizzle out." Danny said.

"Unless you can convince that Wendigo to run straight through into the portal before it closes, I don't see this working..." She muttered.

"Neither do I..." Danny said, sounding desperate. It was then that he noticed something. "Wait...is that...snow?"

Ember raised a brow and then saw puddles on the ground that were slowly evaporating, some of them with bits of snow that were melting.

"Must've come through your portal..." She said.

It was then that Danny got an idea.

"Maybe I don't need him to go through..." He said as he raised his arm again, clenching his fist.

"What are you doing?" Ember asked.

"Watch..." Danny answered as he tried his little experiment.

To Ember's surprise, a large amount of lava fell from the sky quickly, landing atop the lava they were already looking at.

"What the heck?!" She went in surprise.

"Look up." Danny said with a smile, gesturing for her to do so.

Once she did, she saw a portal open for about 3 seconds. Lava fell through. She gasped upon realizing what he did. He made a portal inside the lava to let some of it fall.

Seconds later

Ember had teleported Danny back to Amity Park, only not to the exact same spot.

"Wait... isn't this...?" He recognized the location.

"We're like 25 miles away from where those trucks are. Figure I give you less distance to make up for the time we took." Ember said.

Danny smiled when he heard this. He said nothing but planted a kiss on her, surprising the ghostly rockstar.

Ember appeared annoyed before she smiled internally. She melted into the kiss, and her hair raised a few feet too.

After a few seconds, they separated.

"That's one way to say thanks…" She snarked.

"I'm about to do it again…" Danny said.

"Rockin'..." Ember responded.

They kissed once more, taking a bit longer. Once done, Danny smiled at her.

"I can honestly say… I like you, like that." Danny confessed.

"I'm shocked I don't hate to admit I'm into you..." Ember said in a surprisingly sincere way.

They kissed again, much quicker.

"Wow…" Danny said, his rage and eagerness to destroy the Wendigo lost for a moment.

"As much as I'd love to continue with this, don't you have a monster to slay?" Ember reminded.

Danny's smile left him, recalling his mission.

"Right… Well…" He let Ember go and turned away. "Wish me luck."

"Good luck… Danny Phantom." Ember said, sounding as sincere and hopeful as she could

Danny took a breath and made his way.

Little did he know, an owl was watching from afar.

"I don't know where they went… but as soon as I've bulked up on meat and souls… he's dessert!" The cackling voice of the Wendigo was heard.

The location, the truck stop.

He had been there for 10 minutes now, having morphed back to human form, wearing a jacket atop his usual clothes. He ignored how cold it was, he has been for a long while, only because of why he was here. He had been waiting for the wendigo to show up.

Despite how cold the air was, he still took a breath as he waited patiently.

His phone started to ring. He looked and saw that it was Nat.

"Hey Nat. Now is not a good time..." Danny said.

"Are you still at the movies?" She asked, sounding equal parts concerned and annoyed.

"No… not anymore." Danny said, his voice not hiding how upset he felt.

"What happened?" Nat asks.

"I'm doing something else. The truth is...someone hurt Danielle..." He said, telling the part he knew he could tell her.

"What?! Is she okay?" Nat asked, sounding concerned.

"No, but she will be..." Danny said, sounding upset. "I'm going to find the one who did it… and make them pay..." He answered.

There was a pause.

"Danny?" Nat went, not liking how he sounds.

"Don't try and talk me out of it. I gotta do this, I screwed up and she's paying for it..." He said.

"Are you sure?" Nat asked, not wanting him to get himself hurt.

"Yes..." He said bluntly. Nat said nothing in response. "I know it's risky but I gotta do this..."

"Do you?" She asks

"I've got this. My family tried to talk me out of it, but I know what I gotta do." Danny said.

"I think you are being needlessly extreme..." Nat asked before pausing. "But I can tell you're dedicated to doing this and looking out for your sister…"

"You think I'm too reckless and self-centered on this, don't you?" Danny asked, wondering if he was being too fixated on what he wants.

"Even if you are, I can't exactly blame you. If someone hurt my sister, I'd probably lose it like you..." Nat said in an understanding tone.

Danny blinked, realizing her logic.

"But… am I selfish?" Danny asks.

"Kind of? You're doing this all alone and risking yourself to get back at this guy. But you're doing it to help someone you love." Nat responded.

"So...even a good deed has some selfishness to it..." He said, feeling a bit upset to realize how short sighted he was to come here.

"Even so, it doesn't change the fact that it's still not wrong to do them, especially if it's to help out someone else..." Nat pointed out.

"Really?" Danny asks.

"Yeah. I mean… I dated you because I wanted to get over my ex, just like you did. But… we both made a great new friend in the end. In this case, you're doing it for your sister, right?" Nat asks.

"Not just her." Danny admits.

"Then… don't just worry about what you get out of it. You're doing it for more than just yourself. It's okay to take some satisfaction in it for yourself." Nat said.

Hearing that made Danny let out a small chuckle.

"How'd you get so wise?" He asks.

"You'd be surprised by the mistakes I made… but my dad used to be a soldier. I learned from his wisdom…" Nat said.

"He sounds nice." Danny said.

"He does… anyway… I just wanted to see how you're doing. I should go now. It's past midnight where I am and I should be in bed now. So… night." Nat went.

"Bye Nat..." Danny said as he hung up.

He continued to wait, putting his phone down and taking a breath.

This isn't just for me, it's for Danielle, and for Achak, and way more people. Maybe it's selfish of me to do this on my own… but the world will be a lot better without him in it… He thought.

"One last chance… to stop this." He said under his breath.

At the same time

The Wendigo was running on all fours to where he's to meet Danny.

"Time for a midnight snack!" He cackled.

Special thank you to Flower Princess11.

Invader Johnny: When it's something threatening those he loves, he throws out any hesitation out the window.

RonaldM40196867: Probably. Probably. Because I wanted to, that's why (don't ask why I chose a specific monster for future stories, it's random). 10, but now it's 1. Already do. Mostly selfish bits he can sense and piece together from there, not the entire lives. Because. I mean he can shoot ghostly fire. I didn't, the curse is a part of the legend.
