"I can't do this anymore!" Ron complained as he slumped down the small steel bench. It was by no means comfortable, but it offered him some rest.
"Yeah, mate, me too." Harry followed as he removed the heavy Auror cloaks they'd been wearing.
The Auror office was packed, and despite the increasing number of recruits they had lately, Harry and Ron still felt like they were being pushed around the office for everything.
Harry sat down next to Ron and closed his eyes for a while. He seriously thought that maybe being an Auror was a wrong move on his part. He'd been fighting dark wizards since he was 11 years old, and his chosen career was fighting even more dark wizards.
That didn't seem right.
"It's supposed to be our day off," Ron grumbled without moving from his position. Harry grimaced as he remembered that last time, their day off was also used for an "emergency" call from the office.
"I even promised Andromeda, I'd make it up to her this week," Harry said, trying to rub away the exhaustion in his eyes. He was supposed to be looking after Teddy today, but he was in the Auror office, exhausted beyond his wits.
"I had a date planned today," Ron complained as he covered his face with his hands. Harry could feel the frustration in his friend's voice. He didn't blame him, cause he also felt the same.
"I'm quitting," Ron said, sitting straight and looking at the Head Auror's office with ferocity, which Harry only witnessed when he was being challenged to a drinking game.
"You're quitting?" Harry clarified, looking at his best friend.
"Yes!" Ron answered, and he stood up, looked at Harry, and puffed his chest.
"Aren't you tired of this, mate?! We've been dealing with dark wizards since we were young. We went on a run to find a way to defeat Voldemort—"
"Which you ran away in the middle of it," Harry cut off his friend and grinned. Ron's face immediately went red, but he continued his spiel.
"Anyways, we fought a war, and after that, we helped rebuild this country! Mate, aren't you tired? They keep bossing us around here, and we keep busting our asses. Don't we deserve some rest? Don't we deserve a career that makes us feel at peace?" Ron stopped his rant and stared into Harry's eyes.
For someone who constantly puts their foot in their mouth, Ron's speech is moving.
"You're right, Ron. We deserve better!" Harry agreed as he stood up as well. "I'll tell you what, let's quit together!" he offered his hand to his best friend, which Ron enthusiastically shook.
"Come on, Harry! Let's start changing our lives!"
"So, did you manage to quit?" Neville asked the two.
Without looking, both men chugged down their butterbeer and placed it down with a thud.
"Nope," Ron answered, looking like a dark cloud was hovering over him.
"We couldn't even get a word in. They just told us there was more work to do and pushed us out of the office." Harry followed, looking equally glum.
Not today, but surely they'll submit their resignation letters within that week and be free!
It took them two months before they were able to quit, and another two for the papers to be settled.
