Academia - Fusion Dimension
"...yes, I understand." A voice played through the ears of the waking boy.
Dennis Mackfield found the weight of his eyes lightening, the sounds of his surroundings becoming more clear to him as he regained consciousness. He felt his back, which had been lightly sweating from the heat of the room, resting on a hospital bed.
I'm back in Academia, huh…
He opened his eyes. He visibly flinched at the sudden influx of light filling his vision. He fought it however, and looked to his left. There was a white sheet covering the rest of the room, and to his right was a wall.
He was at the end of a hospital room.
On the other side of the curtain, he could see two silhouettes, most likely the owners of the voices he was hearing.
"As you wish, Professor…" A female voice, most likely the nurse, said in resignation.
The Professor? Dennis thought to himself out of confusion. The Professor himself was here?
Dennis heard the light taps of the nurse's heels becoming louder, the shadows growing larger as they came closer to the curtain. After a moment of silence the curtain was pushed to the side, revealing to Dennis both her and the Professor, who as always wore an emotionless expression.
"P-Professor…" Dennis stuttered, immediately shuffling in his bed sheets, letting out a groan courtesy of the pain in his aching body.
The bald man rose a hand, signaling to the boy not to bother getting up.
Still shell-shocked that the Professor himself had come to see him, Dennis froze for a moment before lying back down fully. He looked up to the ceiling before glancing at the Professor.
"Report." Akaba Leo commanded, not wasting even a second to get down to business. "What happened in the Xyz Dimension?"
Dennis looked away under the immense scrutiny and powerful gaze that the Professor was giving him.
"Forgive my weakness, Professor." Dennis apologized. "I-"
"I did not ask for an apology." Leo cut his subordinate off with a cold tone. "I asked for a report. Report."
Once again, Dennis found himself not being able to look at the Professor. He felt completely and utterly humiliated. He had failed in his mission.
With a heavy heart, Dennis began to tell Akaba Leo about his mission in the Xyz Dimension. How the remaining Lancers had invaded one of their bases in Academia. How he had encountered Ruri. He looked to the wall, immediately feeling the temperature of the room plummeting to the bottom, an icy aura now radiating of the Professor.
He could practically hear the Professor grinding his teeth out of a failed attempt to repress his anger.
Dennis tightened his hands, crumbling his sheets within his fists. There was no way he could live this down. He had the chance to retrieve one of Academia's targets and he failed.
"I see…"
After mentioning Ruri, Dennis fell silent, and for a long period of time, Akaba Leo had not said a single word until just now. The only sound that could now be heard in the current silence was the talking of other people in the room, trying to act casual in the presence of the Professor. The nurse frowned, looking back and forth between the two men. She shuffled her legs uncomfortably, a drop of sweat rolling down her face.
Feeling out of her depth, she spoke up. "I…should probably leave you two alone."
And with that, she spun on her heel and made her exit.
Dennis and Akaba Leo paid her no mind, practically not even noticing that she had left.
The only thing between them was Akaba Leo's coldness. If it had a sound, it would be drowning out all of the other sounds in the room with how much of it there would be.
"Once more, you have failed, Dennis Mackfield." The man stated with a storm swirling around in his tight gaze.
"Yes, Professor." Dennis replied both quietly and somberly. This was similar to how their conversation started when he came back from the Synchro Dimension after his Duel with Shun. "I make no excuses. I was simply too weak…"
A vein sprouted on Akaba Leo's forehead. It was clearly taking everything the man had not to break out into a fit of screams and profanities towards his subordinate.
How Dennis wasn't a Card already, he would never know.
"Do you not realize how vital Kurosaki Ruri is to the Arc Area Project?" Akaba Leo growled through grit teeth. "She is one of the four keys. And to hear that you once again let one of the four keys slip through your fingers…"
"..."
Akaba Leo released a sigh of frustration, the anger in his voice evident. The mask of indifference was slowly beginning to crumble from the whiplash of all of the failures of his subordinates. First the escape of Serena and Kurosaki Ruri, but also the failed invasion of both the Standard and Synchro Dimensions.
If things continue like this. The bald man thought to himself. Ray…I won't be able to…
"One more chance."
"What?" Dennis turned away from the wall, looking at Akaba Leo for the first time during their conversation.
"You will be given one more chance." Akaba Leo repeated, before clarifying. "However, your mission does not lie in the other dimensions. Rather, it is here where you are needed. And mark my words when I say this is the last straw."
"U-Understood, Professor." Dennis mumbled, surprised at being given another chance. Who knows, maybe the third time was the charm. "What do you require of me?"
Akaba Leo turned away, remaining silent, as if in deep thought.
I have a bad feeling about this…Dennis thought to himself.
It was then that the Professor finally spoke, and the mission became all too clear from there.
"Yuri…has been captured."
Academia's Prison - Heartland City - Xyz Dimension
"I do not remember the building being this big!" Rio exclaimed to no but herself as she scurried throughout her hallway.
She hoped that the others were faring well, especially Ruri. After all, they had just reunited, it was a risk for her being here. Then again, as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. It would be terrible for the Resistance if even a single one of their friends were Carded.
Though they would not say it themselves, Yuto and Shun were two of the best Duelists in the Resistance. While she did not know much about Sakaki Yuya, him being the son of Yusho surely spoke a bit to his skill. Gongenzaka seemed like he could handle himself well, and Sawatari seemed like he had more than the fool he was. Allen and Sayaka weren't slouches either.
We will rescue them! The encouraging words rang through Rio's head. We must!
Now the only issue was a matter of finding wherever her comrades were being held.
As if on cue, Rio entered a new, large room. And, low and behold, there was a large single cell that encompassed much of the room. Rio scanned the cell, her eyes brightening as she saw seven familiar faces.
The faces of Yuya, Yuto, Shun, Sawatari, Gongenzaka, Allen, and Sayaka.
"Rio?!" Shun identified, a rare smile appearing on his face despite the shock evident in his voice.
"Guys!" Rio exclaimed, running to the bars of the cell, placing her hands on them and leaning forward.
"It's good to see you." Yuto greeted with a grateful smile, already understanding why she was here.
"Oh, have you come to rescue the great Sawatari Shingo?" Sawatari gloated with a gleam in his eyes. Had his hands been free, he would have run his hands through his hair and adjusted his LDS uniform to appear more attractive. "But of course, even the hero must be rescued once in a while!"
"Just who is this hero you are talking about?" Gongenzaka deadpanned, ticking off Sawatari as he glared at the bigger man.
"I'm here to rescue you guys!" Rio explained, moving away from the cell and looking to other areas of the room, searching for something that she could use to free her comrades. "Ruri, Ryoga, and the others are here as well!"
"Everyone else as well…?" Yuya spoke up weakly, still exhausted from being interrogated. "Yugo and Serena…?"
"Don't forget O'Brien and Marufuji Ryo as well." Rio replied, stopping her tracks, giving a terse pause. She bit her lip, before continuing, "As well as Kaito…"
"Kaito?!" Allen and Sayaka cried out at the same time in shock.
"He's come back to the Resistance?!" Allen questioned, a ghost of a smile on his face, yet also resentment toward the Cipher user for how he had acted.
"It's…hard to say. I'll explain later." Rio assured her friends, "For now, let's focus on getting you guys out of here!"
"I'm afraid that cannot be allowed."
Yuto and the other captives scowled, their expressions contortions into ones of both anger and concern as they saw the owner of the voice.
"You!" Yuto yelled.
Rio turned around, looking to the source of the new voice. She saw a large man in the doorway in which she had just entered. The man wore a black hat and large jacket, as well as an iron mask which covered the features on his face.
"Titan!" Shun roared, lunging forward out of instinct to try and attack the Academia agent. He let out a grunt as the chains continued to keep him stationary, restraining his movements.
"Who are you?" Rio asked cautiously, her eyes narrowed. She raised her Duel Disk, ready to fight at a moment's notice.
"Do your ears fail you?" The obscenely large and muscular man enquired. "It is as your comrade said, I am Titan."
"Titan…" Rio whispered to herself trying to search her memories, searching for something that would make her remember anything about this man. The more she wracked her brain, however, the more she realized that she had never heard of this man ever. No Academia student had ever mentioned him in passing, nor had he seemed to make an infamous name for himself like the Tyler Twins.
"Kamishiro Rio." The black-clothed Duelist identified. "While not as infamous as Tenjo Kaito, some of those prisoners, or even your brother, Academia still has you listed as a threat."
"Do not underestimate me." Rio warned, "In some ways, I am even worse than my brother. Now, let me and my friends go!"
Titan sighed, raising his Duel Disk. "You don't seem to understand. My job is to make sure no one gets out, including you. If you want to escape this place alive with your other comrades, then you must best me in combat." As he finished his speech, the black blade of his Duel Disk shot out, the lights adorning his device switching on as the mechanism activated.
Rio remained silent. There was no need for her to respond anymore. After all, his intentions were clear. Cranking her neck, Rio threw her arm to the side, her Duel Disk activating. Bringing her arm in front of her, Rio milled the top five Cards of her Deck.
"Be careful, Rio!" Yuto called out in warning, his eyes wide, "He's dangerous! There's more to him than what appears!"
"Don't worry, I'll be fine!" Rio exclaimed, turning back to her comrades with a smile. "Just leave everything to me!" She turned her back, glaring at her opponent, "Now, come on!"
"As you wish. But first," Titan said, the eyes on his mask glowing with a bright green, "I believe we should set the stage for our battle!"
Rio hummed with confusion. She and the others in the room looked in shock as the area around them became surrounded in a dark purple cloud of mist, preventing anyone from interfering in the Duel and as well as keeping either Duelists from leaving.
"Rio!" Yuto cried out of concern as he and the others saw Rio's figure disappear within the shadows.
This sphere…Yuto's eyes widened out of realization. He'd seen something like this before!
The image of Darkness appeared in his mind. And then his memory replayed when he first met Titan, who introduced himself as an Agent of Darkness.
If Titan was a subordinate to that man, it would stand to reason that he would be able to use the same sphere.
Rio…be careful…
Inside the Sphere
Rio glanced back as the faces of her comrades became covered by the darkness. She grit her teeth. Now, she couldn't see how her comrades were doing. If they were in any danger, she wouldn't be able to do anything to help.
She had to finish this quickly…
"Let's get on with it!" Rio exclaimed, quickly becoming anxious on the top of her comrades' fates.
"No, no, no." Titan clicked his tongue, wagging his finger at Rio. "Don't you want to know the rules of this game?"
The hot red anxiety boiling in Rio's gut burst, "I don't care about your stupid rules! I will beat you down and save my friends! Now, let's Duel!"
"Hmph!" Titan smirked with amusement, drawing five Cards from his own Deck, "Very well. It will be your funeral…"
"DUEL!" Both Duelists shouted.
"The first move is mine!" Titan announced, flipping around a Card in his Hand. "From my Hand, I discard General Daemon in order to use its effect! I can now add Pandemonium - Demon's Den to my Hand! Next, I activate the Field Magic Card, Pandemonium - Demon's Den!"
The Field Magic activated, and soon the ground Rio and Titan stood on was replaced by a bony structure. Two demonic skeletons jut upward, overlooking the two Duelists.
Rio cringed, shifting her feet as she felt her feet grinding over the shattered bones.
Just what is…this monstrosity? Rio thought to herself, chills running down her spine as the already bleak atmosphere plummeted to an ice cold temperature. The girl took a breath, seeing white vapor disappear in front of her eyes.
She could practically feel the evil radiating off of this place. It was…nearly unbearable!
"Next," Titan continued, not even bothering to explain the effect of his Field Magic, "I Summon Intercept Daemon from my Hand!"
Appearing to the Field was a green demonic Monster with a skull imprinted on its chest. A green vine-like entity squirmed around its body, taking the form of six arms with five blood red fingers at the end.
Intercept Daemon: Level 4, 1400 Atk, 1600 Def
"I set two Cards. That is the end of my turn."
What?! Rio's head jerked up from her Cards.
That was it? That was his turn? One Monster Summon, a Field Magic, and two set Cards? No Fusion Summoning? Not even a stronger Monster?
He must have full confidence in either that Field Magic or the Cards he has set…Rio deduced, placing a hand on the top of her Deck.
"My turn," She announced, swiping a Card off her Deck. She brought it to the front of her face. Her face scrunched out of frustration as she looked at her Hand. There was nothing that she currently had that could deal with his Magic or Trap Cards…
It seems like I have to go in blind. Rio narrowed her eyes. I won't be able to rescue my comrades if I just sit around!
"From my Hand, I Summon Aurora Falcon!" A Monster who bore a striking resemblance to Blizzard Falcon but with an aurora lights pattern adorning its body appeared to the Field.
Aurora Falcon: Level 4, 1500 Atk, 1500 Def
"Battle!" Rio declared, her Monster letting out a screech as it took to the air. "Aurora Falcon, attack Intercept Daemon!"
The aurora lights on Aurora Falcon's body began to glow with a bright light. The lights shot off the bird's body as singular beams of light making their way to their target.
"When in Attack Position while you declare an attack, Intercept Daemon can deal 500 damage to you!" Titan countered as six balls of energy formed within each of the demonic Monster's hands.
All six energy balls were thrown towards Rio. They struck her all over her body, one hitting her face, two hitting her shoulders, two hitting her legs, and one smashing into her stomach.
"KUH!" Rio coughed in agony, letting out a cry of pain as her body nearly dropped face first to the ground, instead ending up with her on her knees. "Hah…hah…hah…" The girl panted, sweat now rolling down her face.
Rio: 4000-3500 LP
"Next," Titan's head shot up, thrusting his hand towards one of his set Cards, "I reveal one of my set Cards. The Trap Card, Daemon Glitch! If I control a Fiend-Type Monster, I can target a Card on the Field, destroy it, and then I can send a Fiend Monster from my Deck to the Graveyard. Say goodbye to your Aurora Falcon!"
The next Rio knew, smoke enveloped her eyes, her hearing becoming disoriented as an explosion rang through her ears. She looked in front of her to see Aurora Falcon was now gone, having imploded thanks to the effect of Titan's Trap.
A Card was ejected from Titan's Deck. The man removed it, revealing it to Rio before inserting it into his Graveyard slot. The Card sent to the Graveyard was a Normal Monster, Daemon's Summoning.
Rio groaned, feeling a throb pound throughout her whole body.
The pain that was coming from the attacks…it was more strong than usual. Did it have something to do with this area that they were in?
"So you've noticed." Titan muttered aloud, grabbing the girl's attention. "This space we are in is akin to games ancient Egyptians played in old times…Dark Games. The followers of Darkness had found a way to somewhat replicate these Dark Games. Unfortunately, on a much smaller and less lethal scale. That still doesn't mean you won't lose your spirit to the pain."
"Shut up! My spirit will never break!" Rio shouted, holding out the Card of her destroyed Monster. "Once per turn, when Aurora Falcon is destroyed by Card effect, I can Special Summon it back from the Graveyard. Return from the great beyond!"
A sculpture of ice with the figure of Aurora Falcon. The figure shattered, the layer of ice being shredded and the Monster underneath being revealed.
"Unfortunately, Aurora Falcon cannot attack during the turn it was Special Summoned this way. However, I use the effect of Blizzard Penguin!" Rio said, revealing one of the other Cards in her Hand. "When a Winged-Beast Monster is Special Summoned to the Field, I can Special Summon this Card to the Field as well. Come, Blizzard Penguin!"
Appearing alongside Aurora Falcon was a penguin with hold skin and a black belly.
Blizzard Penguin: Level 4, 1000 Atk, 500 Def
"Now, I overlay the Level 4 Aurora Falcon and Blizzard Penguin!" Rio announced, her two Monsters soaring into the air before converging back to the ground, slipping through a galaxy-like portal. Rio's eyes filled with light as her ace Monster, a black-skinned woman with a royal appearance dressed in a red and white cloth appeared to the Field, brandishing two blades of hard ice. "Xyz Summon! Please appear, Ragnazero!"
Ragnazero: Rank 4, 2400 Atk, 1200 Def
Rio smiled, holding out her hand. "Upon Xyz Summoning Ragnazero, her effect activates! I can now reduce the Attack of a Monster you control by 2400!"
"What?!" Titan widened his eyes, looking to his Intercept Daemon, whose Attack dropped to 0.
Intercept Daemon: 1400-0 Atk
"Hmph." A smirk returned to Titan's face. "It matters not, your Battle Phase has already concluded."
"How naive to think there aren't other ways of facing you!" Rio quipped as an overlay unit orbiting Ragnazero disperses into yellow particles. "I use the effect of Ragnazero! Once per turn, when a Monster you control has an Attack lower than its original Attack, I can detach an overlay unit and destroy that Monster! And that's not all, once destroyed, you take damage equal to half the difference between the Attack your Monster had when destroyed and its original Attack. Go, Ragnazero! Destroy Intercept Daemon! Guidance to Funeral!"
Ragnazero let out a heartfelt battle cry, spinning with grace before slashing diagonally a single time with her blades. A wave of white energy shot out from the blades, hitting Intercept Daemon and destroying it.
The slash continued on, smashing against Titan's body. Titan let out a cry of agony, clutching his chest tightly as the pain rushed through the affected area.
He did the math quickly in his head. The original Attack was 1400, and the Attack before destruction was 0. As a result, he had just taken 700 points of damage.
Titan: 4000-3300 LP
Titan recovered as a bolt of lightning struck down in the middle of the Field, enveloping the darkness with light.
"Pandemonium's effect, each time a Daemon Monster is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard except by battle, the controller of that Monster can add a Daemon Monster whose Level is lower than the destroyed Monster from the Deck to the Hand." Titan explained, revealing the Card he had chosen to retrieve. It was Trick Daemon, a Level 3 Monster. As he added the Monster to his Hand, Titan's Deck reshuffled itself.
"I set three Cards and end my turn." Rio concluded, the Cards she had just put down disappearing before her eyes.
So, even he can feel the pain from this "Dark Game". She noted. What kind of twisted shit is this? She could still feel the pain of the first damage of the Duel pulsating in her stomach. It made her want to vomit so bad, but she remained steadfast anyway.
"My turn, draw!" Titan shouted, drawing his Card. He grinned maliciously, inserting the Card into his Duel Disk, "I activate the Magic Card, Pot of Greed! With it, I draw two Cards! And then, I reveal my Reverse Card, Daemon's Roar! By paying 500 Life Points, I can Special Summon a Daemon Monster from my Graveyard, but it is destroyed at the end of the turn and it cannot be releases. Come to my side, Daemon's Summoning!"
A bolt of lightning crashed to the ground. Rising out of the light was a demonic figure with a skeleton-like appearance appeared tk the Field, electricity crackling around every part of its body.
Daemon's Summoning: Level 6, 2500 Atk, 1200 Def
Titan: 3300-2800 LP
"Reverse Card, open!" Rio called out, revealing one of her set Cards. "Continuous Trap Card, Icy Road! If a non-Water Monster is Normal or Special Summoned while I control a Water Monster, that Summoned Monster is changed to Defense Position!"
Daemon's Summoning struggled, but eventually relented against the pull of the Trap's effect. The demon dropped to a knee, placing its arms in front of itself.
"An annoying Trap Card, indeed." Titan acknowledged, inserting a Card into his Duel Disk. "It is a shame it won't serve a purpose shortly. Quick-Play, activate, Cyclone! With it, I destroy Icy Road!"
A spiraling cyclone appeared, lightning flashing in the eye of the storm. The torrent of wind enveloped Rio's Trap, causing it to shatter into millions of pieces.
"Tsk!" Rio clicked her tongue. Of course he would get Cyclone now of all times…
"With this, my Monsters won't be forced into Defense Position." Titan clarified, inserting another Card into his Duel Disk. "That makes it safe for me to use Fusion! I fuse the Daemon's Summoning on my Field with the Trick Daemon in my Hand! Fusion Summon! Appear, Level 6! Daemon's Manifestation!"
A Monster with an eerie resemblance to Daemon's Summoning appeared to the Field. Blue lightning crackled around the tyrants body as the demon released a ferocious roar.
Daemon's Manifestation: Level 8, 2500 Atk, 1200 Def
"All Daemon's Summoning I control gain 500 Attack while this Monster is on the Field." Titan said as a purple aura surrounded his Monster, powering it up.
Daemon's Manifestation: 2500-3000 Atk
"What?" Rio questioned with a raised brow. "You said all Daemon's Summoning gains 500 Attack!"
"Daemon's Manifestation's name becomes Daemon's Summoning while on the Field." Titan explained as a Card ejected from his Deck. "Now, as it was sent to the Graveyard by Card effect, I can use the effect of Trick Daemon! I can now add a Daemon Card from my Deck to my Hand. I will add Evil Emperor of Terror - Genesis Daemon! And now, I will activate the Magic Card, Dark World Dealings! Each player draws a Card, and discards a Card."
Both Titan and Rio removed a Card from their Deck. Titan grinned, taking the Monster Card he had just added, Genesis Daemon, and placed it into his Graveyard. On the other hand, Rio's face remained neutral, and she ended up sending the Card she drew, Aurora Wing, to the Graveyard.
Immediately, as the Magic Card resolved, Titan inserted another Magic Card into his Duel Disk. "I activate the Magic Card, Monster Reborn! With it, I can resurrect a Monster in one of our Graveyards. Return from the depths of Hell, Evil Emperor of Terror - Genesis Daemon!"
A fountain of dark light sprouted out of the ground in front of Titan. Appearing out of that was a large skeleton demon with a single glowing eye and a blood-red sword. The demonic being sat atop his stone throne, waiting to carry out judgment.
Genesis Daemon: Level 8, 3000 Atk, 2000 Def
"Now," Titan said, motioning towards his new Monster, "I will activate the effect of Genesis Daemon! Once per turn, by banishing a Daemon Monster from my Hand or Graveyard, I can target and destroy a Card on the Field. I banish General Daemon to destroy one of your set Cards!"
Genesis Daemon effortlessly lifted up its blade. Despite using one arm, it swung the sword with ease. A wave of energy shot out from the sword, striking one of Rio's two set Cards and destroying it. The destroyed Card was a Trap Card called Torrential Reborn.
"Time for us to battle! Genesis Daemon, attack Ragnazero!" Titan declared, his Monster lifting its enormous weapon.
Rio readied herself with a single Card in hand, knowing that she could not do anything to stop the oncoming attack. Genesis Daemon slashed diagonally, splitting her ace Monster into two gruesome parts.
The Monster exploded as the glass particles sprayed out in a fountain-like fashion.
Rio flipped the last Card in her Hand around, revealing it for Titan to see. "From my Hand, I activate the effect of Support Penguin! When a Monster I control battles, I can make the damage I take from that battle 0!"
A shield appeared in front of Rio. The shards crashed against the shield, the damage being nullified.
"Very well, then." Titan yelled, raising his hand to the air. "Daemon's Manifestation, attack Kamishiro Rio directly!"
Rio glanced down at her facedown. She could use it now to somewhat mitigate the damage, but she would lose a massive advantage. It would hurt, but she would have to take all of it…
Daemon's Manifestation leaped over to Rio, landing on the ground in front of her. Rio's body shuddered from the impact. She gasped out of shock. Moments past as nothing happened, Rio gazed at the Monster with an awestruck expression, a drop of sweat rolling down her face in fear of what the demon would do as the electrifying Monster stared down at her.
Then, before Rio could even react, Daemon's Manifestation's fist sparked with electricity. The Monster's fist smashed into Rio's stomach.
"GUH!" Rio croaked, saliva and spittle being shot out of her mouth, her body doubling over and crumpling around his fist. The electricity spread to her body. "AAAAAUUUUUUUGH!" She screamed as the sparks crackled around her.
Rio let out a pained groan as the electricity ceased, though the aching in her body remained even as the Monster who struck her removed its fist from her belly. She coughed, the blue-haired girl falling forward, completely disoriented as body hit the ground with a loud crash.
Rio: 3500-500 LP
With what little strength she currently had, Rio bent her body, raising her waist to the air as she slid hand across her gut. The pain was excruciating. Though it felt the worst in the struck area, her body was still pounding in every other area. It was as if her body was warning her, telling her that if she continued in this cruel game with Titan she would pay the price with her life.
I…can't do this…I…Rio thought to herself weakly, giving a cough as more liquids were tossed out. Ryoga…
"Heh…"
She looked up with tired eyes at the sound, seeing Titan looking down on her with a malicious smirk, clearly reveling in her pain and suffering.
"Don't you see? This is all your fighting thus far has gotten you." Titan said, crossing his arms. "Groveling on the ground, suffering. And what to show for it, absolutely nothing. As the days pass, more of your comrades fall, and your hopes of winning this conflict decrease even more. So, why don't you do us both a favor, and surrender. Give in to the futility of your battle, and rest…"
He's right…I'm finished. Rio thought to herself in defeat as she looked down at the ground, feeling the world pushing her back down. Who was I to think I could save everyone?! It's too much! She let out a groan of pain again, spitting on the ground as her body writhed. I can't do this…Ryoga…
"...stop that crying…"
Rio raised her head at the sound of the voice. She saw no one there. But how…
"...stop that crying, and be the sister I know."
These words…
These were the same words Ryoga had uttered to her before he left for the Standard Dimension. Even though her body and a part of her mind wanted to give, it seemed like some instinct drove her to fight for survival.
"...be the sister I know. The real Kamishiro Rio, the one who doesn't cry. The one who is strong."
Ryoga…I'm sorry! Rio thought to herself in awe as she felt some of the pain in her body alleviate, or numb, she did not know which. For some reason, thinking of her brother's words reinvigorated her. If you saw me like this…you'd be ashamed! Ashamed to have a weakling be your sister!
Finding the strength to fight again, Rio rose to her feet.
"I won't give up!" She declared.
Titan scowled. "How annoyingly persistent. I suppose that is one admirable quality you Resistance scum have. I end my turn."
"You'll regret insulting my comrades… She rasped, glancing at her Duel Disk and opening her last set Card, revealing a Trap. "Reverse Card, open! Trap Card, Xyz Revive Splash! I target a Rank 4 or lower Monster in my Graveyard and Special Summon it as a Water Monster! Come back to me, Ragnazero!"
A portal opened in front of Rio, and ascending out of it was her ace Monster in its glory.
Titan smirked, amused. "Reviving your ace Monster, huh? It might as well be fodder! It has no overlay units to make use of!"
"Always so quick to underestimate…" Rio stated, placing a hand on her Deck as her turn officially began.
She hadn't met a single Academia Duelist who had Dueled with a modicum of respect. At the very least, not one who hadn't already defected.
"My turn!" She drew the top Card, a new energy coursing through her veins as the words of her brother encourages to fight once more. Her hands moved to the Graveyard compartment of her Duel Disk, her recently activated Trap Card now being ejected. "From the Graveyard, I activate the additional effect of Xyz Revive Splash! By banishing it from my Graveyard, I can target a Water Xyz Monster I control and use it to Xyz Summon a Water Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck whose Rank is 1 higher!"
"What?!" Titan's eyes widened under his mask, "A Rank-Up without a Rank-Up-Magic Card?!"
"Rank-Up-Magic Cards aren't our only way of ranking up!" Rio exclaimed as her lone Monster entered the reopened overlay network. A pillar of blue light flushed out of the portal as Rio's new Monster took shape, her form appearing out of the light. "Please appear! The infinite power that can freeze even time now revives, Funerary Sub-Zero Maiden, Ragna Infinity!"
A dark clothed version of Ragnazero appeared in front of Rio. Donned in black wings and dress, she now had a double bladed staff akin to that of a pickaxe.
Ragna Infinity: Rank 5, 2800 Atk, 2400 Def
Titan glared at the new arrival, maintaining a calm disposition. "I admit, it is impressive that you managed to perform such a Summon, but the fact still remains that your Monster is far too weak to face my own!"
"Perhaps…but Ragna Infinity has plenty of tricks. For example," Rio cited as her Monster drew her blades, "When Xyz Summoned, she can destroy all Monsters you control whose current Attacks are different from their original Attack!"
"What?!" Titan cried out as Ragna Infinity unleashed ferocious slashes upon Daemon's Manifestation, cutting it up and destroying i5.
"That's not all! When Ragnazero has been used to Summon this Monster, Ragna Infinity can deal damage to you equal to the difference between the current Attack each Monster had on the Field and their original Attacks! Guidance to Purgatory!"
As if on cue with Rio's explanation, a seemingly delayed shockwave ruptured Titan's body. The man let out a howl of pain, and since this was a Dark Game, the pain felt was all that more extreme.
His Monster had 500 extra Attack, meaning that Titan was delat 500 damage.
Titan: 2800-2300 LP
"It's not over!" Titan called out, still as confident as ever. "I use the effect of Daemon's Manifestation! When sent to the Graveyard by one of your Cards, I can Special Summon Daemon's Summoning from my Hand, Deck, or Graveyard! Come forth, Daemon's Summoning!"
Moments of silence past, and awkwardly, despite his command, nothing happened. Titan grimaced, wondering what was going on. His Monster was gone, sent away by Ragna Infinity! So why…
He widened his eyes as he took a gaze at his Duel Disk, which registered Daemon's Manifestation as being banished.
"I forgot to mention…" Rio chimed with a sly smile, "Any Monster destroyed by this effect of Ragna Infinity is removed from play instead of sent to the Graveyard."
Shit! Titan cursed internally. If Daemon's Manifestation was removed from play, then that means he wouldn't be able to use it's additional effect!
"We're not done yet!" Rio declared as she held a hand up to her Monster. "There is more to her effect! If Ragna Infinity succeeds in dealing damage to you, and you have Monsters on the Field whose are currently at their original Attack, then I can reduce the Attack of one of those Monsters by the amount of damage you just took!"
Titan quickly did the math in his head in a panic, a part of his brain coming to the realization fast. He took 500 damage, meaning his Monster would lose 500 Attack, enough for Ragna Infinity to be stronger now.
Genesis Daemon: 3000-2500 Atk
"Now then," Rio continued, having still not finished with her plays, "I use the effect of Ragna Infinity by detaching an overlay unit! Once a turn when the Attack of a Monster you control changes, I can banish that Monster! And finally, Ragna Infinity will gain Attack equal to the change!"
With two diagonally slashes, Genesis Daemon was banished, disappearing from the Field in a shimmer of light. Just then, a light glow appeared on Ragna Infinity's blades, powering up the woman herself.
Ragna Infinity: 2800-3300 Atk
"Impossible!" Titan shouted in disbelief. "I…lost?!"
"This is the end! Ragna Infinity," Rio commanded, her Monster letting out a shout in response, "Attack him directly and put an end to his wicked game! The Depth of Purgatory!"
Ragna Infinity's blades carved marks into space itself. The Monster drew lines intricately and quickly, each swipe of her blades were careful and precise. As she finished, the markings left by her blade showed the Japanese symbol for Purgatory. Light shined out of the symbol, crashing into Titan's body and smashing through the walls of the Dark World in spectacular fashion. The remnants of the now unstable Dark World crumbled like shards of glass as Rio could now see the real world progressively return to her view.
"Rio!" She heard an all too familiar voice call out with panic.
I won…Rio thought to herself, looking at the now fallen and unconscious body of her opponent, now lying unmoving on the ground.
Titan: 2300-0 LP
Ragna Infinity disappeared from the Field, but not before giving her owner a grateful and earnest bow.
"Rio!" The voice called again as many pairs of footsteps could now be heard running towards her.
"Ryoga…" She whispered at the sight of her brother.
"We don't have time for this! We have to get them and get out now!" O'Brien shouted, Summoning Volcanic Avenger to his side. The Monster's fist crashed into the metal bars that had separated them from the prisoners. With relative ease, the bars had toppled over.
Just then, Serena ran over to the unconscious form of Titan, rummaging running her hands through his clothes, seemingly in search of something.
It was at this moment that the disoriented and tired Rio noticed the loud blaring alarm that was echoing throughout the area.
How did she not notice that…?
She toppled over, almost falling to the ground, but fortunately her brother caught her embracing her in a tight hug.
"You did it!" Ryoga said as Rio could practically hear the smile in his voice. "That is the warden! The watcher of the whole facility!"
"That's all good and all," A sour mood was put onto Ryoga's shoulders as he heard the voice of Sawatari ring through his ears, "But can you hurry up and free us now!"
"Shut up!" The defiant voice of Serena bellowed, not wanting to put up with his bullshit as she walked into the now destroyed cell. Rio heard the jingling of keys within her hands.
So that's what she was doing…
"Another word and I'll leave you to rot!" Serena exclaimed with a tone of finality as she inserted the keys into the Abyss Actor users' cuffs.
"YAHOO!" Sawatari cheered, his arms flailing around excited, smacking Serena across the face unknowingly. "FREED-"
SMASH!
Sawatari's face planted down to the ground. The top of his head steaming from the hard strike Serena had dealt to his head.
"Enough messing around!" O'Brien yelled, reprimanding the two for their antics. "Serena, free the others! Now!"
"Right." Serena nodded, her composure returning as she got to unlocking the other cuffs.
"Thank you, Serena!" Yuya exclaimed with a grateful nod. The Moonlight user sent him a small smile in response.
"Thanks…" Shun said stiffly as his hands were freed. Serena snorted, knowing that he truly was grateful and that he was just trying to hide it.
"I'm grateful, Serena." Yuto stated. After a nod from the Fusion user, he turned his attention to Ryoga's sister. "Rio, how are you doing? That dome you guys were in…I know a bit about it…"
"A little tired, but nothing I can worry about now." Rio replied, giving him a reassuring smile as a way to say that she would manage.
Finally, Allen's cuffs were undone. The boy looked away with a blush on his face, clearly embarrassed. After all, the whole time Serena was here, he had been nothing but hostile to her after learning about her origins at Academia.
"Thank you for saving us." Allen stated quietly. "You didn't have to do that…I'm grateful."
"Don't be stupid." Serena chided with a hiss, causing Allen to flinch from the harsh reaction. "Of course it had to do it. Comrades have to look out for each other, no?"
Allen returned Serena's gaze with wide eyes, not expecting the response he was given.
"You…"
A strong hand grabbed his shoulder, dragging him away from Serena.
"Like O'Brien said," Shun began with a serious tone, already getting down to business, "We have to get out of here!"
"Agreed!" Yuto nodded as he and Shun subconsciously made their way to Ruri, whom gave them a brief hug to show her relief for their safety in the current situation.
"First our Duel Disks and Decks!" Gongenzaka spoke, coming from another area of the room, his arms filled with Duel Disks with Decks inserted.
Yuto, Shun, Sawatari, Yuya, Allen, and Sayaka all gratefully retrieved their Duel Disks and Decks, equipping themselves immediately.
"Let's go, we have to regroup with the others!" O'Brien exclaimed as the group of Lancers and Resistance members all sprinted out of the room.
"Yugo and Marufuji Ryo?" Yuya asked.
O'Brien nodded. "Yes." In all of the commotion, he completely neglected to add in the bit about Kaito's presence.
As they all made a right turn in a cross-section, they all saw Obelisk Force and Academia Duelists swarming the hallways, their eyes dead set on them.
"Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!" Sawatari whined. "We're being swarmed! We're gonna get captured! I can't be held prisoner for more time in a place like this!"
"For once, I agree." Yuya nodded, an expression filled with resolve making its way to his face. "We will escape! We must!"
"Yuya's right." Yuto supported his counterpart with an equally determined tone and face. "We have too much at stake to fall here! For our fallen comrades, the innocent, the injured, and the anguished…WE CANNOT FALL HERE!"
"I AGREE!" Gongenzaka shouted at the top of his lungs. "I, the man Gongnezaka, have too much waiting for me back in Standard! To fulfill my responsibilities and my duty, I will keep fighting to my last breath!"
"Damn, you guys…" Ryoga muttered, panting as he spoke, a ghost of a smile on his face, "You all are so annoying. Just when I think about giving up, idiots like you guys, especially you, Yuto, never let me lie down in peace."
"Hehe." Shun let out a rare laugh. "It appears we are in agreement."
"Is it always this lively with the Lancers?" Sayaka asked Ruri.
The girl let out a small laugh. "I don't know, I haven't been with them long."
"Say, do you guys know where we are going?" Allen spoke up, glancing at each of his saviors.
"Sort of."
"Sort of?!" Allen and Sawatari both bellowed at O'Brien's blunt response.
"The fuck do you mean sort of?!" Sawatari cursed, flailing around like a monkey. His eyes widened, his heart quickening to extreme speeds. "Oh God! We're so dead!"
"Enough!" Yuto snapped, having had enough of Sawatari panicking. "Trust in O'Brien! Trust in the plan he and the others came up with!"
Though the deathly fear still remained on his face, Yuto's words seemed to silence Sawatari.
As if on cue, O'Brien spoke up. "Here! Now, we need to break through the floor! We have to use our Duel Monsters!"
"Right!" Everyone nodded.
Yuya, Yuto, Shun, O'Brien, and Gongenzaka all activated their Duel Disks. From their Decks, they removed their ace Monsters and slammed it onto their Duel Disks.
"With your beautiful dichromatic eyes, come forth and aid me! Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon!"
"With your pitch-black fangs cloaked in darkness, descend now! Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon!"
"Come forth and aid in our revolution! Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon!"
"Descend and light everything ablaze! Volcanic Avenger!"
"Defend us, Superheavy Samurai Big Ben-K!"
In five flashes of light, the two dimensional dragons, lone revolutionary Falcon, fiery behemoth, and steadfast samurai appeared before them all.
Big Ben-K quickly moved to hover over all the Lancers, aiming to protect them all from any falling debris.
"NOW!" O'Brien shouted, the four Monsters unleashing their attacks.
The ceiling of the hallway split open, crumbling into hundreds of pieces as the debris rained down on the Lancers. Fortunately, due to Big Ben-K's presence, they were all shielded from any oncoming rocks.
Fortunately for them, the ensuing rubble had caved in the route behind them, protecting them from any pursuing Academia Duelists.
Using the Summoned Monsters, the group managed to get through the opening and to the ground floor. They all made their way outside in a hurry, as Academia Duelists on the ground floor were now beginning to take chase after them. And it was there that they saw three people standing over a defeated horde of Academia Duelists.
Yuto and the other prisoners identified them as Yugo, Marufuji Ryo, and…
"Kaito?!" Yuto and the other Xyz Duelists who were imprisoned exclaimed out of a mixture of surprise, doubt, and a hint of gratitude, each in different mediums from person to person.
"Since when did you-"
"Save the talk for later." He cut Sayaka off coldly, turning around and joining the group in their run away from the building along with Yugo and Ryo.
"Even after everything, you still came and helped save us." Allen muttered with a stoic expression. "I'll admit it for real now…I was wrong about you, Marufuji Ryo."
Said Duelist did not respond, but Allen could see a near imperceptible twitch of his lips as he spoke. He seemingly smiled, if not smirked, for a millisecond before replacing his calm demeanor.
"Yugo," Yuya spoke up as he ran next to his counterpart.
The Synchro Duelist noticeably flinched at being addressed, refusing to keep eye contact with Yuya for longer than a second.
"Y-Yea? What's up?"
"Thank you for saving us back there!" He told his counterpart with a grateful smile.
"O-Of course. It's the least I could do after…" He trailed off, refusing to elaborate.
Yuya remained silent, the smile on his face fading as he realized what Yugo was referring to. It seemed like he was still thinking about their battle in the Standard Dimension. This definitely would be something he would have to deal with later. Yugo already had enough on his shoulders. He didn't need something that had already been rectified, still weighing on him.
"Hound Dogs, sick 'em!" A voice shouted.
The group turned, seeing two Hound Dog soaring through the sky.
"AHH!" Two voices screamed.
"Shit!" Shun cursed, turning his head back to sew Allen and Rio now on the ground, a hound dog prowling on each of their bodies.
Tailing close behind was a large group of Academia Duelists.
O'Brien, who was closest to the two attacked Duelists turned around to look at the situation. He began to dash towards his two comrades, but upon further inspection of the situation, he stopped, completely frozen.
"O'Brien, what are you doing?!" Ryoga yelled from further up the group, seeing the man had frozen.
O'Brien's body didn't even move. The Duelist didn't seem to be there. All he did was stare at the fallen bodies of Rio and Allen. His gaze became unfocused as he felt very unsettled by the situation in front of him.
This is…
His body began to shake as he felt his heart dropping, quickening in pace. His breath began to quicken as well, bordering on hyperventilating as if he was…scared…
"I…" He whispered to himself as he looked between Allen and Rio, trying to figure out a course of action.
"O'Brien!" Ryoga shouted, dashing towards the frozen man. "O'Brien! Stop gawking and hurry, we have to save Allen and Rio!"
O'Brien stayed right where he was.
It was at that moment Sakaki Yuya sprinted alongside Ryoga, bringing out Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon once again while Ryoga Summoned Silent Honor ARK.
The two Monsters attacked the Hound Dogs, making quick work of them while also smashing their bodies into the hoard of approaching Academia Duelists.
Yuya and Ryoga ran to Allen and Rio's bodies respectively, helping them both up as the four ran back to the group, all of which began to retreat once more…
Except for O'Brien, who was uncharacteristically frozen in place still.
Ryoga stopped next to the Fire Duelist, grabbing his shoulders firmly.
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING, MAN?!" Ryoga screamed, his face nearly touching O'Brien's. The fellow Lancer flinched, his mind and body returning to reality. Whatever trance he was in now seemed to be lifted.
"I…" O'Brien started, but paused as a shamed expression took over his face.
"There's no time, come on!" Yuya beckoned.
Still unsettled, O'Brien gave a stiff nod, turning around with Yuya and Ryoga and taking off into a run once again.
Within the group up ahead, Serena growled. These guys just wouldn't quit, would they? Well then, it seemed like she had to take things to her own hands.
She activated her Duel Disk, taking a Card out. She slid to a halt, spinning on her heel to face her pursuers, letting Ryoga, Yuya, and O'Brien pass her.
"Serena? What are you-"
Yuto paused as he saw Serena slide a Magic Card into her Duel Disk.
"Magic Card, Lunar Eclipse!" She announced, taking steps back as her Card took into effect.
Just then, a dark, pitch-black mist appeared in the area, grouping itself together and covering a large area, including the ground that the Academia students were running on, obscuring their view.
"What the hell?!" One student cried out in shock.
"I can't see!" Another exclaimed with fear.
"Where did they go?!" A third student enquired, looking around in the mist for any sign of the Lancers or Resistance.
Serena smirked to herself as she turned back for her comrades, running back after them. As she caught up, Ryoga gave her a nod of approval.
"Great thinking!" He complimented, "We can get out of here safely now!"
The group continued to run, taking the necessary detours to assure that Academia would not be able to find them and figure out the location of their base.
Later - Academia's Base
It took everything within his power to not scream at the top of his lungs.
Edo Phoenix dug his nails into his knuckles, hissing from the stinging pain. He leaves the prison base for like five seconds and it all goes to hell. The remaining Lancers invaded their prison base, breaking their other comrades out.
That would be the last time he let Noro have control of an entire building…
After his argument with Yuya, Edo had left the prison base. He returned to Academia's main base of operations. Also, after everything that went on between the two of them, he needed to clear his head.
He had beat Sakaki Yuya In a Duel…he had proved the Professor's ideas were superior to that of Sakaii Yusho. So why…did he still feel like he lost?
That's what he was thinking as he made his way to the base. And as if everything currently on his mind wasn't enough, as soon as he returned to the base he got a call from an Academia student informing him that not long after he left the prison base was invaded.
The Lancers got away as well…
That certainly makes things more annoying. The silver-haired Commander-in-Chief thought to himself.
Now, hours after learning of the whole prison base situation, Edo was waiting on his throne. Waiting for the new arrivals to appear. After this recent attack on their forces, it was high time that this battle between Academia and the Resistance to finally come to end.
It will all end soon. And it will be by my own two hands! Edo thought to himself with determination. For the new world, we will eradicate the remnants of the Resistance…and the Lancers too!
He has already gave the Tyler Twins, Noro, and Titan a piece of his mind, and he was sure Dennis had been taken care of back in the Fusion Dimension. The four former Duelists were currently in front of him, taking a knee.
In particular, Noro was practically passing his pants. After all, Edo knew about the man's delusions of grandeur, and none of them would be fulfilled if word of his screw-up get out. He might even lose his current position as Deputy.
And Edo himself was seriously wanting to advocate for that happening…
"Why the long face, Edo-kun?" A voice asked.
Edo shuddered from the creepy sound of it, realizing who it was. He opened his eyes, looking to see a group of seven Academia Duekists walking towards him, led by the Doktor.
The Doktor, a woman with long green hair and a vampiric charm, a girl the same age as Yuri with green hair who held a blank look in her eyes, clearly being brainwashed. Accompanying these three was a man in a dark-clothes suit with red linings donning black shades, and two men wearing nearly identical masks. One had long black hair, while the other had green.
He immediately hid his scowl, rising throne and walking down to meet the new arrivals, knowing his place in Academia's ranks.
"Nothing, just the incompetence of my men is putting me in a very sour mood…" The Commander-in-Chief droned, hissing at Noro, who winced from the harsh gaze with a whimper.
"Incompetent men?" The green-haired man, Darkness, questioned with an amused smirk. "Like you said, these are your Duelists. So, if they are incompetent, that reflects rather poorly on you as a Commander-in-Chief, no?"
Edo twitched from the question.
He did not like Darkness at all. He found his close relationship with the Professor very unnerving, and he always felt like the masked man was hiding something, what with his disciples, all of whom were currently in the room.
He looked to the masked man standing next to Darkness. That man was also an anomaly. As annoying as it was, his codename was also Darkness. To differentiate between the two, people at Academia would simply refer to him as Nightshroud. Unfortunately, outside of the group of people who had just arrived, not many people other than Akaba Leo knew much about Nightshroud.
He didn't know the origins of the Duelist. He simply appeared one day. There have been theories.
Some thought it was just some random guy. Some thought it was a former graduate. Some thought it was a killer, and many others…
One even went as far as saying that the man under the mask was simply a corpse.
And then there was Trueman, or Mr. T, the man in shades. He was just as mysterious as the other two, showing his face around Academia even less. A complete mystery…
"Oh. Give Edo-kun a break. He has been under a lot of stress recently after all." The woman with long hair, named Camula said.
Camula was the most normal of the group apart from the other girl, yet she still creeped Edo out just as much as the others.
"Hihihihi…" The Doktor chuckled maniacally.
And then there was this piece of shit. Rumor had it that the Doktor used to be a human being. However, as it was now, he was anything but that. After all, the proof was the 14-year-old standing right next to him...Rin, that was her name.
"He may be incompetent, but at the very least he did grant us this golden opportunity to snuff out the Resistance once and for all." The old scientist said.
"I suppose you are right." Darkness muttered, the smirk on his face disappearing as he glared at the Doktor.
"If I may," Trueman spoke up politely. Atter a vigilant nod from Darkness, he continued, "I believe it is time we make preparations."
Darkness nodded. He walked past Edo and up the stairs the boy had just walked down. And then, in a complete display of dominance and power, the man casually placed himself atop the Commander-in-Chief's throne. It stood as a message that despite Edo's Rank, Darkness was the one in power.
It was time…
It was a good thing they placed a tracker on the inside of Sakaki Yuya's cape-like jacket.
"It is time we crushed our enemies and ended this war."

And another chapter is done and in the books!
Another Duel this chapter. In this one, we see Rio pick up a win against Titan. Rio has not Dueled in like 50 chapters, so it's about time she gets some shine. Do not worry though, she will have another Duel later.
Now I know what I said about adding characters, but Camula and Mr. T aren't really too important. They're just more forces to add to Academia's strength. Nightshroud will play a little bit of a role no where near as some of the higher ups like Darkness, whom I want to play a very important role later down the road.
And much like how Ryoga got DARK, I gave Rio Ragna Infinity in this Duel. Furthermore, I decided to give Rio a sort of archetype in the form of more Blizzard or Aurora Cards.
Once again, a review is always appreciated. So, leave one below! I always respond in the next chapter.
Next chapter has no Duels, give myself a little calm before the storm before closing out the Xyz Dimension arc.
Speaking of which...
BlaiseCandell: Hey, I'm glad someone like you is reading my story. I really like your story Six Dimensions. I haven't caught up yet tho, have been a little busy.
Guest: Thanks brother.
Guest: Interesting choice.
Fey: My Spanish is not that good, but I appreciate the support. That's insane that you've been here since 2017!
And here is the preview…
The Lancers return to the Monastery, letting their first ever victory sink in. A couple of peaceful days pass by as the forces of the Resistance and Lancers regain their strength. Yugo comes to terms with the fact that he will have to face off against Rin again. However, O'Brien has a bad feeling, and he thinks about his freeze-up during the operation…
That's all for this chapter.
Take care, goodbye!
