Rose: This sucks

Rose: Are you ignoring me?

Rose: Sorry. That was needy. But I'm just so sad. I was TRYING to be nice and supportive and stay with Keisha until the last day before break and then her family comes and gets her and I get storm stayed!

Rose: I could have been home with you and Heather doing family stuff but now I'm kicked out of my dorm and I'm in this stupid hotel eating Chinese takeout by myself

Rose: I want to be home for Christmas!

Rose: Please answer. I'm sorry for spamming and I know you're probably doing family stuff but I miss you.

Rose: I love you. Call me when you can.

Jake felt bad every time he felt his phone vibrate but he couldn't answer Rose. He needed to focus because the weather really was shit and as soon as he left New York, he knew there was a very good chance that he was going to get lost.

Jake flew closer to the ground than he normally would so that he didn't miss any landmarks and so that the wind wouldn't be as strong. Even still, Jake found himself being tossed from one side of the street to the other, his aching wings struggling to keep him moving forward. He battled his way through the sleet, every hard pelt against his scales convincing him that he would never be warm again.

Jake almost cried when the sign for Rose's hotel appeared before him. He thought of how her face would lock when he knocked on her door. It was the only thing that got him through the last leg of his journey.

Jake transformed into a human on the other side of the road from the hotel, immediately getting soaked. His teeth were chattering by the time he dragged himself through the hotel lobby and onto the elevator. His hands were shaking so badly as he pulled out his phone that he was sure he was going to drop it. He scrolled back in his chat with Rose t o find the sad faced selfie she'd taken in front of her door. Room 612. Jake jabbed the button for the sixth floor, fumbled his phone, and accidentally called Rose.

Jake hung up as quickly as he could but Rose called back immediately. Jake was riddled with guilt but he declined the call and then quickly sent off a text.

Jake: Sorry! Butt dial! Love you and call you soon.

Rose: oh. Okay. I love you too. Call me!

Jake practically ran out of the elevator when the doors opened, rushing down the hall to Rose's room. He could picture her face when he declined her call and that wasn't ever how he wanted to make her feel. He stood in front of room 612, aware that he looked like crap and that this wasn't a very romantic entrance because he hadn't had time to pick up snacks or flowers, but he knocked anyway, because he couldn't bear another second of letting her think that she was alone on Christmas.

"Who's there?" Rose asked.

"Room service," Jake replied, hearing her footsteps and knowing that she was looking through the peephole.

He leant into the peephole too, hearing her loud shriek from the other side of the door. The door flew open with a bang and then she had launched himself into his arms. Jake knew that he was freezing and was probably soaking her but she didn't seem to care as her legs wrapped around his waist, her arms around his neck. She buried her face into his shoulder and let out a ragged sob.

"What are you doing here?"

"I wasn't going to let you be alone," Jake said, feeling again like he was going to cry. Her relief at seeing him was so palpable and Jake felt like he could feel how much she loved him with every breath that she took. "I wasn't going to spend Christmas without you."

Jake walked the two of them into her blessedly warm hotel room, kicking the door shut behind them. He kept his arms around her, supporting her, never wanting to let her go.

"How did you get here?"

"I flew."

Rose picked her head up and looked at him, frowning. "But, all the planes are grounded. That's why I couldn't get home."

"Rose."

"You didn't dragon fly here did you? Oh, Jake, that's so far!"

"It was worth it, for you," Jake said. "Now, kiss me."

Rose did, so deeply that Jake felt all of his insides warm. She squeezed her legs around him and Jake groaned.

"I love you," Rose whispered. "Thank you so much for doing this."

"I love you." Jake pecked her cheek. "I wasn't going to miss Christmas with you."

"Thank you," Rose said again. Then, she ran a hand through his hair. "You feel cold."

"It's in the negatives out there!" Jake exclaimed.

"It's good that it's snowing because I love a white Christmas," Rose said, "even if it's been the worst Christmas so far."

"It's sleet. It's different."

"Anyway, that's not the point."

"Then what's the point?"

"That you feel cold and now you're making me cold –"

"Sorry."

" – and a shower would probably warm the both of us up."

Oh. Oh.

Jake grinned. "Worth a shot."

Rose winked at him and then let go, leading him toward the bathroom the second that her feet hit the floor. As she heated up the shower she said, "Thank you again. You saved Christmas."

"Just call me Santa Daddy," Jake said and then he winked at her, loving the way that she laughed. "I love you."

"I love you too."

And then they climbed in the shower, relieved that they could be together for Christmas.
