Indra is pulled into a portal & transported to modern times. How will he cope with things when he runs across a rather familiar looking face?

A sasusaku AU one-shot. Time travel. Sasuke's past self.

Blood dripped from the man's eyes as an encompassing pain twisted like a noose around his heart, his eyes drawn to the prone figure of his wife… as she lay dead at his feet. The rounded hilt of his katana was heavy against his palm as he clenched his fist around it more firmly and if he was any lesser of a man, Indra would have been crying. He still couldn't believe it, his beloved was now dead and it was all because of… him. He had been betrayed tonight by those he had once called kin and the feeling of exacting revenge on them, felt heavy upon his shoulders. The time to grieve his loss would soon come, but for now—

"ASURA! You fucking bastard! I am going to kill you! I will cut you down for this, you traitorous snake!"

Huff. Hiss. Clink.

With his sword now drawn, Indra let out one final battle cry in a fit of absolute fury; his darkened gaze narrowed on his 'once brother' as the sunlight cast a glare upon his katana. Asura looked at him with a mixture of sorrow and irritation as he drew his own blade and faced the furious rage from his kinsman.

When metal clashed against metal, a low humming could be heard in the near distance, before a blinding white light formed between the pair; then Indra Otsutsuki was thrown backwards as a strange sort of black void formed around him; then it slowly consumed his form, throwing him into a perpetual darkness as he tumbled through space and time itself before landing roughly on the ground in an unknown place.

The last thing that he remembered was staring up into the bright blue sky above before darkness pulled him under.

'Sakuya, my beloved. Looks like I will be joining you soon.'

Sakura hustled along the busy streets of Konohagakure as her long, white lab coat billowed behind her legs, while her short heels clacked obstreperously against the rutted, dirty asphalt beneath her feet. She was running late (yet again) and cursed her luck… for if it hadn't been for her perturbed landlord harassing her for last month's rent (as she tried to hastily escape him on the apartment's rickety stairs again), she would have been at work on time. 'Tsunade is going to kill me,' the pinkette thought as she finally shoved her way through the doors of their local hospital.

Sakura ignored the female receptionist's ritualistic greeting upon her arrival and made her way down the hall in a brisk fashion. But when she entered Tsunade's office, the older woman was already giving her a stern glare, which caused Sakura to glance down at her feet in shame. She clutched the clipboard against her chest more firmly, before bowing her head. "I'm so sorry I'm late today, ma'am."

The young woman waited and felt her heart twist when her beloved mentor let out a deep, and obviously disappointed sigh. She could hear the sounds of slight shuffling after as the blonde-haired doctor rose from her position at her desk and then heavy footsteps followed as she approached her from across the room. She kept her head and gaze firmly downward as the Senju spoke. "Does being on time mean nothing to you anymore, Sakura? Does this internship not interest you at all?" At this, the pinkette's head shot up and her eyes bulged as she shook her head profusely.

"No, ma'am! I mean being on time is important to me and I want this internship more than anything in the world! I beg of you to give me another chance, please."

Tsunade frowned at her, while crossing her arms over her ample bosom. "Then show me. There are plenty of people lined up for this position and if you can't even be bothered to show up on time anymore, Sakura… then perhaps you should consider that it's just not meant to be—"

"I swear that it won't happen again, ma'am!"

A pregnant pause followed before Tsunade finally relented. "I won't give you another warning, this is your last chance."

Sakura swallowed, anxiety filling her guts, but she held the other woman's intense gaze regardless of this new uneasy feeling growing inside of her. "I understand, ma'am. I want to thank you for this opportunity to follow in your footsteps and I hope to one day make you proud of me."

Tsunade let out another sigh and took the large clipboard from her grasp, before reaching for her own doctor's coat. "Come along then, we have a lot of work to do today."

Five hours later…

Sakura's feet were throbbing and felt slightly swollen when she sat down (for the first time since that morning) for her lunch break. Forgoing her meal, she reached down to pull her heels off and began to rub at the bottoms of her aching feet. When a large shadow loomed over her from behind, she turned around to see her best friend since elementary school smiling down at her. "Rough morning…," he asked before taking the empty seat beside her. He passed her a steaming mug of coffee across the table and her face lit up upon seeing it. She thanked him softly and took a small sip of it before letting out a deep sigh. 'Black, exactly the way I like it.'

"It's been… okay."

He sat his own cup on the table and lifted a brow at her. "I heard you were late again, Sak." Sakura groaned and ran a hand through her pink locks before leaning back against the back of her seat and closing her eyes.

"You heard about that already, Naruto?"

"I also heard that Tsunade gave you another chance."

"Mrs. Senju has been letting me have it though… running me around the entire hospital like crazy, with zero breaks. I'm paying for my earlier mistake, that's for sure."

Naruto let out a sigh of his own before stretching his legs out in front of him. "You know she is hard on you because she really likes you and she wants you to succeed." He let go of his mug to place a hand on the back of his neck. "We both know that Granny wouldn't fire you anyway. She has threatened you with finding a replacement for you 'due to your tardiness' how many times now? She's all talk."

"Regardless," Sakura said as she rolled her eyes. "I need to stop being late all the time and if it wasn't for my stupid landlord… I wouldn't have been." Naruto's lips pulled down into a frown and his gaze narrowed.

"You need to move away from that place. It isn't safe."

"I can't afford anything else right now. Everywhere is either full or way too pricey for my salary," she said with a deep (and slightly defeated) huff. "I can't just 'up and move' you know, Naruto."

The blonde-haired Uzumaki leaned forward to gather her full attention before he spoke up. "I've told you that I have a spare room that you can have, Sakura. I don't mind at all sharing my space with you."

"I can't afford even a third of your rent," she half-laughed.

"You wouldn't have to pay me, Sak. You're like a sister to me, so it would be no trouble to have you stay with me. At least think about it, alright?"

"Fine, if it makes you that happy, I'll think about it." A large smile spread across his lips as he leaned back in his seat. She could only roll her eyes and match his enthusiasm by giving him a warm smile of her own. She was about to ask him about his day, when the alarm above them sounded… indicating that an emergency had just arrived at the ER. 'I hope whoever it is makes it,' she thought before her pager began to vibrate on her hip. She glanced down and let out a low groan. "Time to get back to work. Duty calls."

"Good luck," Naruto called after her as she slipped on her heels and exited the cafeteria at a quickened pace.

"GET AN IV IN HIM, STAT!"

Sakura Haruno rushed to assist in her mentor's request as the more experienced physician continued to operate upon the hospital's newest arrival.

It turns out that the emergency alarm she heard earlier in the cafeteria had been set off for this man and luckily (or unfortunately) for her, her mentor had been thrust into the role of his caretaker, which in turn meant that she was also entrusted with his personal care, whether Sakura liked it or not.

Finally, after several failed attempts, she was able to get a proper IV drip started and several hours later, she stood by his bedside beside Tsunade as she went over his charts in relative silence. Sakura was finally able for the first time to actually look upon their patient with a critical eye and if she was to be truthful with herself… the pinkette found that she felt rather flustered just by looking at him.

He was the most handsome man she had ever seen, with skin as pale as newly fallen snow and hair as dark as the midnight skies above their beloved city; the length of which had been pulled back into a loose ponytail that would have flown freely down his back if he were to stand and she was almost certain that he would tower over her with his height. The man's jawline was cleanly shaven and sharp while his aristocratic nose was slightly pointed, but it was the dark markings against his skin that drew her attention the most. 'Is that… paint? Why does he look so… so familiar to me?'

Her thoughts were interrupted by Tsunade. "Are you done getting a good look at him now, Sakura?" When the slightly startled woman turned towards her, her cheeks flamed a bright shade of pink at the knowing smirk twisting the older woman's plump lips. Sakura quickly held her hands up and shook her head while taking a small step back; she missed the slightest twitching of the man's left hand as she moved away, almost as if he was reaching out toward her… or for her rather.

"NO! No, I wasn't… I was just… what I meant to say is—"

"I'm only teasing you, silly girl… calm down." Though an explanation was given, Sakura still felt slightly uneasy and quickly changed the subject.

"So, who is he?"

"We aren't sure," Tsunade said whilst her brows twisted in thought. "A good samaritan brought him in after they found him unconscious on the outskirts of Konoha. No name and no ID. I guess we won't know anything until he wakes up." Sakura could only nod her head before Tsunade placed a warm hand upon her shoulder. "Don't worry yourself with it okay. I'm sure he will wake up soon and we can figure this all out. Besides, his wounds seem to be healing quickly, so I'm sure that he will be better and awake in no time. In the meantime though, you need to go home and get some rest because your shift ended hours ago, Sakura. You did good work today. You should be proud of yourself."

Reluctantly, Sakura followed her mentor's advice and soon found herself packed up and walking the dark streets back to her apartment. Upon arriving several minutes later, she snuck past the landlord's room before shutting and locking her door behind her; an eerie silence followed. Deciding to forgo her meal for a second time that day, she hopped into the shower quickly before snuggling beneath her sheets. It didn't take her very long, before exhaustion pulled her into a fitful and nightmarish slumber.

Sakura walked into Tsunade's office the next morning with dark bags under her eyes, the likes of which indicated just how unrestful her sleep had truly been. She then plastered a fake smile on her plump lips and took the small clipboard from her mentor's grasp willingly, ready to get started with her morning rounds. Several hours later… when she came across the last patient's name, she felt her heart pick up a few beats. The manila envelope read "Unknown" at the top and she only knew of one patient who could have possibly gone by that name.

Making her way down the long hallway seemed to take an eternity and everyone else around her seemed to just fade away as she turned the doorknob slowly… before slipping through the narrow crack and shutting the door behind her. The hospital's room was shrouded in darkness, as no one had even bothered to draw the curtains open yet, and her vibrant green eyes took several moments to adjust, before she slowly stepped into the room. She felt a chill run down her spine… as if someone was watching her… but Sakura tried her best to ignore the feeling as she made her way to the bed. But when she finally reached it, her orbs widened in shock when she realized that her patient was nowhere to be found.

Crumpled sheets lay askew on the pristine mattress as if someone had risen with haste and the small clipboard in her hands landed with a loud thud as it fell from her grasp to the cold tiled floor. 'Fuck! What happened? Where in the hell is he? Did Mrs. Senju move him or something without informing me about it earlier? What in the hell is going on here?'

She was about to turn around when she felt it; an imposing presence had somehow moved in behind her, trapping her within the dark confines of this room. It stood between her and the only door and she knew that she had no means of escape now. Her body stiffened when she felt a large hand land upon her shoulder and quickly spun to face the figure lurking in the dark depths of the shadows.

Its stature was significantly larger than hers and she took a small step back, eyes focused on the pale skin covering a masculine hand as it stretched out towards her. Sakura's throat began to close upon her growing fear and the figure continued to advance slowly before opening its eyes. She really wished it hadn't, for the most vivid shade of red met hers and terror consumed her very soul.

A silent, frightful scream began to bubble its way up from her expanding lungs as she inhaled, but before she could act on it, a deep, rich voice penetrated her senses causing her to feel slightly lightheaded and then when the unknown male's hand reached out affectionately to touch her cheek, she suddenly and unexpectedly felt weak at the knees.

"Shh, Sakuya… my beloved. Calm yourself. You know that I will not harm you."

Sakura's thin pink brows drew together as the figure finally came into view and confusion clouded her thoughts as he moved his hand to the back of her head to pull her close… into a tight embrace. It was him; it was the patient… but—

She stood there, frozen, as he continued to whisper in her ear but one thought still remained, 'Who the hell is Sakuya and who in the heck is this guy?'
