Chapter 11

Tobias' POV

"Those do smell good," I compliment her, inhaling the aroma of the delicious scones...

"Thanks."

I watch as Tris moves through the kitchen graciously. She places the baking sheet of scones onto the stove, transferring them from the baking sheet to the cooling rake. My eyes fall to her nicely shaped bottom when she retrieves the glaze from the fridge. Damn, she has a nice ass. I clear my throat, unable to get out of this fog I just found myself in. Tris retrieves a spoon and begins to drizzle the thick glaze over the scones. I lick my lips, not sure what I'm wishing for more. I know I shouldn't be thinking like this. It's not right, but I can't help it.

Without a single word, Tris lifts to her tippy toes retrieving a paper plate from a top shelf, she slides a scone onto the plate and hands it to me. I'm honored at this moment to try her new recipe and be her tasting buddy. I take the plate from her, taking my role as seriously as I can. I take a small bite feeling the warmth of the glaze and the crumble of the scone on my tongue. The small hint from the scone is delicious, but the glaze carries the taste over the top even more. A moan escapes my lips involuntary. These are out of this world.

"Is it good?" Tris asks, with her voice teasing as I take another bite of the deliciousness. I can see myself eating the whole damn batch.

"Yes," I answer, with a full mouth. "I want another one. Can I have another?" I say, pointing towards the batch of scones. She laughs at my amusement. I stand up, deciding that she also needs to try this delicious creation. "You gotta try this," I say, inching the scone in my hand closer and closer towards her tempting mouth. I watch as she finally gives in, taking a small bite of my scone. I swallow hard past the lump in my throat. I haven't felt like this in so long, if ever.

"Good, right?" I ask, as I watch her mouth carefully close and chew on the scone. She nods instead of saying a word. I cleared my throat once more, taking a step back from her so as not to scare her. "Yeah, I think they will go nicely in the display, Four." She says softly. I cringe inside, by the sound of my name Four. For the first time ever, I want her to say another name. A name I abandoned long ago.

"Do me a favor?" I ask, not pausing as I continue, "Don't call me Four."

"So what should I call you?" She asks, confused by my request.

"Nothing for now."

It's an odd feeling when the lights go out. Like the silence is that much louder than it was before. I sit up, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. My room instantly feels colder than what it was an hour ago when I went to bed. My thoughts immediately go to Tris, her petite form, knowing it won't be able to hold onto the heat for long. I stand from my bed. One thing about this room, there are many, many windows. It's a gorgeous view, but a bitch during a winter black out. I decided to abandon my room for the night, taking a pillow and a few blankets with me. I'm not surprised to see Tris in the hallway when I come out of my bedroom. A blanket in her hand along with a pillow of her own.

"It's freezing." She points out.

"Yeah, winter blackouts are the worst! Come on, we'll warm up by the fire," I suggest. Tris follows me down the stairs and towards the fireplace in the living room. I push back the sofa, giving us more floor space in front of the fireplace. I lay down one blanket on the floor along with my pillow and lay out another blanket. I figure body heat would help us both, staying close is the best thing to do at the moment. I start a fire, warming my hands up instantly against the flames.

"Oh, that feels good." Tris whispers, taking a seat on the blanket. She curls into the one she brought down, still shivering. I move to sit beside her, wrapping my right arm around her shoulders. My hand falls on her arm, rubbing it up and down causing some friction for warmth.

Just to survive. I don't want her to get sick. This is nothing more than what it is…. Nothing more. I keep telling myself that, ignoring what having her so close to me does to me.

"Tell me something." She says, with her teeth chattering.

"What do you want me to say?" I ask. Not sure what to say. I'm not used to talking so much, but with Tris I don't want there to be any walls.

"Something about you…" She says. "Something I don't know about your childhood."

"There's really nothing much to say," I begin. "I grew up in the city of Chicago…My father killed my mother when I was nine. Magically he got away with it. Because he did, he thought he was invisible…He thought he could get away with doing whatever he wanted to me. He beat me day and night for a while. Until Uriah and Zeke's parents noticed what was really happening and they did something about it," I say, my left arm hanging over my left knee. I stare off into nothingness on my hand, hating the thought of seeing how she would look at me after this.

It's an odd feeling to battle. The aftermath of how she will look at me, like I'm a broken puppy or something… Yet I don't want to hold back from her.

"Four…" She begins, ignoring the cringe I give her when she says my name. "You're so brave. You had to overcome so much…" She says, I glance over to her seeing the passion and pride in her eyes that she holds for me.

"Tobias," I whisper.

"What?"

"Tobias, that's my real name.

Tobias." She says, with her voice gentle.

"I like the way you say my name." I confess.

"Tobias." She repeats. I close my eyes, bathing in her warmth. I can see myself bathing in her glory for time to come.

"So let me get this straight…You own a Christmas tree farm… Yet you, yourself, have never had a Christmas tree?" Tris teases.

"I swear…. My father never allowed it and Lauren passed away before we could have our first Christmas together… So no, I never had a Christmas tree." I explained.

"Well, we really should change that." She says, her head laying against my shoulder. It's an odd feeling having her so close to me, like she was always meant to be near me, somehow. I lean my head back against the sofa behind us letting my eyes close and the darkness take over me.

Tris' POV

My eyes slowly open, the fire is still roaring. The room is filled with sunlight and there is an aroma in the air of pine trees. I sit up from the floor, taking notice that Tobias is no longer next to me on the blanket. I slowly stand up from the floor, feeling every stiff muscle in my body. I stretch my arms up over my head, turning in the room to find a real Christmas tree standing up in the middle of the living room. I'm in awe of its size…It's bare, but really beautiful.

My nose leads me to the kitchen, the smell of fresh coffee and bacon makes my stomach rumble.

"Good morning," Tobias says, not even bothering to turn around. I can hear the lightness in his voice.

"You got a Christmas tree," I pointed out.

"Well you can't have Christmas without a Christmas tree." Tobias teases, I laugh at his silly response. "I thought we could figure out how to decorate it after we eat something." He says as he begins to plate the food.

"Do you even have any decorations?" I ask.

"Mmm no." He says, sheepishly.

"That's okay. We can make our own ornaments with clay and food coloring," I suggest and there are Christmas lights and garland in the store.

"Why do I suddenly feel like I'm back in grade school?" He jokes.

"Well don't worry, I'll make sure you get a nap," I teased him.

"And a cookie?" He asks, his face looking like a pouting child. How can anyone resist that?

"1 cup of flour, 1 cup of salt… Add up to one half cup of cold water until it forms a ball. Knead for several minutes." I read off of google. I gather all the ingredients in the kitchen and begin the mixture for the clay dough. I do just like the instructions read, kneading the dough and adding food coloring. I do this not once, but two more times to make enough dough for the both of us to create ornaments. Tobias offers to get the lights, garland and a few ball ornaments from the store. I grabbed a few Christmas cookie cutters that I was using in the kitchen from the store.

"I got the lights, garland and ornaments." Tobia announces as he takes his coat off and hangs it at the door.

"Great. The dough is all set…" I called back. He joins me in the kitchen, smiling wider than a child on Christmas morning. I laugh, holding up a few different cookie cutters for him to choose from. He chooses the Christmas tree and the stockings, which leaves me with the Santa cookie cutter and the Snowman. We both get to work on our decorations with nothing but laughter and jokes filling the air.
