We Found a Home
"The thieves were apprehended before they could even flee the boundaries of Suna," Baki informed, glancing at the scroll in his hands.
"With how many were they? The reports were conflicting about the number, weren't they?" Gaara inquired, frowning.
"The group turned out to have six members in total," Baki answered. "They still had all the stolen items with them."
"Well, that's easy," Gaara muttered. "Are they in cells?"
"Yes, awaiting the questioning," Baki confirmed. "I'll be assigning someone tomorrow to question the group."
"That's good. You happen to know where Aiko is?" Gaara questioned, signing off the document before closing the file and placing it to the side, putting away his pen next.
"She was terrorising some ANBU members," Temari's amused, exasperated voice floated over to them from the doorway.
The red haired girl next to her instantly protested the accusation. "Was not! Was asking questions!"
"You're still too young to learn how to fight," her aunt reprimanded her, making the five year old pout.
"I'm already five!" Aiko whined, even raising her hand with her five fingers spread out to stress her point.
"Still too young," Temari repeated, clicking her tongue.
"Temari-ba-chan is right," Gaara interjected when it looked like Aiko was about to start protesting again. "You're still too young to learn how to fight. You'll get plenty of time to train when you're older."
"How much older?" she demanded, narrowing her blue eyes.
"Two more years," Gaara answered easily. "Just like your brother."
"Eugh, fine," Aiko acquiesced not too gracefully.
"She's really like her daddy in this kind of mood, huh?" Temari snorted and gently pushed Aiko forwards. "Go on, brat. I still have some things left to do and babysitting you isn't part of that."
"I'm not a baby!" Aiko insisted, but her ire was quickly forgotten when she noticed Gaara putting everything away and hanging his hat on the wall. "Dad's finished?"
"You're finishing up early today, Kazekage-sama?" Baki asked neutrally, eyeing the way the files were firmly put to the side.
"Yes, we'll be going home early today," Gaara confirmed, smiling when Aiko skipped towards him, holding out her arms. He obliged her silent request and bent down to pick her up, settling her on his hip.
She giggled, kicking twice with her left leg before she wrapped her arms around Gaara's neck, pressing a kiss against his cheek. "Had a lot of fun playing, dad," she chirped.
"Yeah? How many pranks did you pull off today?" Gaara asked dryly, knowing that his definition of playing wasn't necessarily the same one his daughter had.
The way she grinned brightly said it all. "Three!" she announced proudly. "And I was really quick too!"
"Really just like her daddy," Temari muttered highly amused and turned to leave. "I'll see you tomorrow, Gaara."
"Hm, tell Shikamaru I said hi," he told her and she waggled her fingers at him in acknowledgement before walking away.
"You're leaving earlier because of Christmas?" Baki realised.
"Hm, going to celebrate it with my family," Gaara confirmed, tugging lightly at one of Aiko's pigtails, making her laugh.
"Enjoy your evening, Kazekage-sama," Baki smiled faintly.
Gaara returned his smile, feeling Aiko tighten her embrace around his neck. "I will, thank you."
"I did it, papa!" His son announced excitedly, jumping up and down as he pointed at the kunai firmly stuck in the middle of the bull's eye.
Sasuke smiled faintly and came over to ruffle Kazuki's black hair, making the seven year old beam up at him. "You did a great job. Like I said, with practice you can do it."
"I hit it twice even!" Kazuki said proudly. "I'm getting better and better!"
"You really are," Sasuke agreed and glanced up at the sky.
Their training had started a couple of hours ago and by now the sky was slowly starting to turn dark grey as they left the afternoon behind and approached the evening. The wind was picking up as well. It had been chilly the whole day already, but the temperature was now really starting to drop. Dark clouds had been steadily gathering over the course of the afternoon, promising either a heavy bout of rain or of snow. If it would indeed start snowing, Sasuke knew two kids who would definitely be excited about that.
"Can I show daddy?" Kazuki asked eagerly. "I want to show him how good I've become already!"
"You can show him tomorrow," Sasuke told him. "It's getting rather late and we'll have to go home now."
"Oh." Kazuki looked disappointed for a moment before he perked up again. "But tomorrow I can show daddy?"
"Tomorrow you can show him," Sasuke promised. "If you want, you can show him before he leaves for work tomorrow."
"Yes!" Kazuki fist pumped the air twice before he rushed over to the tree and started collecting the kunai and shuriken he had used for practice.
Sasuke gathered their bags in the meantime, checking each of them to see if nothing was missing.
"Do you think daddy is home already?" Kazuki asked curiously, handing over the pouches with the kunai and the shuriken.
"He should be," Sasuke replied. "He mentioned he would be home earlier today."
"Because it's Christmas?" Kazuki questioned excitedly, apparently remembering again which day it was today.
"Yes, because of Christmas," Sasuke confirmed, smiling faintly when Kazuki cheered. "It's why our training is finishing earlier as well."
"Will Tsunade-baa-chan be coming too?" Kazuki accepted the scarf Sasuke gave him, wrapping it quickly around his neck several times.
"She was thinking about it," Sasuke said. "She might visit; she knows daddy will be cooking tonight."
Surprisingly, given his obsession with ramen Naruto was actually great at cooking all sorts of dishes. He took a lot of pleasure in cooking as well, which was why Sasuke didn't feel that guilty about letting Naruto take over the cooking completely at times.
"Let's go then!" Kazuki declared excitedly. "Will there be presents?"
"There will be presents, of course. What's Christmas without presents?" Sasuke asked dryly, huffing amused when Kazuki latched onto his arm with a loud cheer.
They hadn't gone too far into the woods for their practice today, so it didn't take long before their home came into view; bright warm light spilling through the windows on the ground floor, proving that someone was home already. A shadow passed behind the window of the living room before that same shadow appeared in the kitchen.
Kazuki had been content to clutch Sasuke's arm on their way back, but the second he laid eyes on their house, he grinned widely and rushed off, running straight to the door. Sasuke shook his head in mild exasperation, following at a more sedate pace.
Kazuki managed to open the door right when Sasuke walked up the porch and the boy barrelled inside, calling out, "Tadaima, daddy!"
"Okaeri, Kazuki," Naruto called out from the kitchen. "How did your practice go?"
Kazuki hurried to take off his jacket, scarf and his shoes, running to the kitchen while Sasuke closed the door and removed his own cloak and shoes.
"I managed to hit the bull's eye twice with a kunai!" Kazuki announced excitedly. "Can you believe it, daddy? I did it twice!"
"I can definitely believe it with how much you've been practicing," Naruto chuckled.
"Can I show you tomorrow?"
"Sure," Naruto agreed easily. "Go wash up a bit; dinner will be ready soon and your baa-chan will be arriving in a bit as well."
"Okay!" Just as quickly as he had rushed into the kitchen, just as quickly did Kazuki run up the stairs to the bathroom.
"Be careful on the stairs!" Sasuke admonished him automatically, rolling his eyes at Kazuki's chirped "Yes, papa!"
His agreement would sound more believable if Sasuke couldn't hear him running up the second set of stairs as well.
"Well hello there, stranger," Naruto teased when Sasuke walked into the kitchen. "Heard the training went really well?"
Sasuke walked over to him, wrapping his arm around his waist from behind. He nuzzled Naruto in his neck; the blond man easily tilting his head to the side to give him more room.
"He's got your tenacity," Sasuke muttered, placing a kiss underneath the blond's ear. "Wouldn't stop practicing until he got it right."
Naruto chortled and turned down the fire underneath one of the pots before he turned around in his embrace, lifting an eyebrow at him. "My tenacity or yours?" he asked with a snort. "You can't claim you're not stubborn either, bastard."
"This particular form of tenacity? Yeah, he definitely got it from you," Sasuke scoffed and stole a kiss before Naruto could come up with a retort. He ran his hand over the gentle swell of Naruto's stomach, smiling when he felt something faintly pressing back against his thumb. "How are you two doing?"
"Little Bean has been behaving the whole day," Naruto said amused, humming when Sasuke's hand slipped underneath his sweater to touch his bare skin. "Without you two around, there's no point in trying to kick up a storm after all."
"Oh, so now you're blaming us for that," Sasuke said and raised an eyebrow. "Who do you think the baby gets their energy from?"
Naruto sniffed and turned his head away. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Uhuh," Sasuke said unimpressed and leant forwards to kiss Naruto again. "You think we'll find out the sex during the next appointment?"
"Should be," Naruto said and nodded. "Baa-chan says it should be possible."
"Kazuki's been wondering when we'll know," Sasuke said and leant past Naruto to stir in the pot on the left before the soup could spill over.
"Hm, Aiko hasn't been subtle about it either," Naruto snickered.
As if summoned, there was the sound of the front door opening once more followed by a rapid footfall. "Tadaima, daddy, papa, Kazuki-nii-chan!" Aiko yelled.
"Okaeri, Aiko!" Kazuki returned the greeting from upstairs before Aiko came running into the kitchen.
"Daddy, papa!" she cheered; her blue eyes glittering.
She practically threw herself at Naruto, who was quick enough to catch her and settle her on his hip. She used the extra height to lean sideways and wrap her arms around Sasuke's neck, pressing a wet kiss against his cheek.
"How much of a devil were you today?" Sasuke inquired dryly, recognising that particular bright grin as the one Aiko wore whenever she had managed to pull off a prank. She really was Naruto's daughter in that regard, no doubt about it.
Gaara walked into the kitchen as well and snorted quietly, running a hand through his hair. "Three apparently. And she terrorised some of my ANBU."
"Did not!" Aiko instantly denied and turned her head, pouting at Naruto. "I was good, daddy!"
"I'm sure you were," Naruto reassured her, but he smiled knowingly and he glanced at Gaara. "Was there any damage?"
"Nothing as far as I know," Gaara replied and came over to kiss Naruto on his mouth first before turning his head and kissing Sasuke next, making Aiko giggle and beg for a kiss as well. He gave in, kissing her forehead. "I think I would have been informed if there was any damage."
His sand suddenly shot out and there was a cut off shriek before the sandy arm rose up in the air, showing Kazuki dangling upside down. The dark haired boy pursed his lips and crossed his arms, which made for a ridiculous sight with how he still hung upside down.
"I'll catch you by surprise soon, dad," he promised; his black eyes determined.
Gaara smirked and used his sand to set him down on the ground. "I'm sure you will, squirt. How did your training go?"
"Can't I train with nii-chan?" Aiko demanded as expected.
"You're not old enough yet," Kazuki informed her primly. He so did love to lord his age over his little sister at times.
Sasuke was pretty certain Itachi at least had never done that.
"I'm already five!" Aiko predictably argued.
Sasuke just looked at Naruto, who puffed up his cheeks. "Don't know why you're looking at me like that," he sniffed, which was as good as an admission before he lowered Aiko onto the floor.
"Five is not old enough yet," Kazuki told her, but really it was like arguing with a wall.
"Is so!" Aiko insisted and they were off, starting their old argument anew.
"I swear I was never this bad," Naruto muttered.
Gaara smiled. "They have it from someone and it's not me or Sasuke."
"Oh yeah, just blame me, why don't you?" Naruto huffed and narrowed his eyes, pointing a wooden spoon at Sasuke and Gaara. "Do I need to remind you whose doing all the work here? I'm the one who popped out your kids and this is the thanks I get? Ungrateful!"
"We're very grateful for that," Sasuke said and bent closer, whispering in Naruto's ear, "Why don't we show you just how grateful we are tonight?"
Naruto's cheeks pinked. "Think you can weasel your way out of this so easily, huh?"
"Don't think we didn't notice that the toy box is missing an item," Sasuke murmured meaningfully.
"You forgot to put it away," Gaara added helpfully.
Naruto's cheeks were definitely red now and he whirled around, turning back to the pots and pans on the fire. "I have no idea what you're talking about!"
Sasuke met Gaara's eyes across Naruto's shoulders and they both shared a smirk. "Of course you don't," Sasuke said airily and secretly ran his hand across Naruto's arse, making the blond jump and muffle a squeak before he turned around and smacked Sasuke's shoulder in warning.
"I can hear you two arguing all the way to Konoha," Tsunade's voice piped up behind them, which had as effect that both Aiko and Kazuki instantly quit their argument. "You can see who your dad is, wow."
"Oh my god, I'm not that bad!" Naruto insisted, throwing his hands up.
"Baa-chan!" Both Aiko and Kazuki ran towards Tsunade, eager to draw the older woman into a hug.
"Brat, I was the one who helped you give birth to these two," Tsunade said finely. "They definitely have your lungs."
"You all suck, I swear," Naruto muttered darkly.
"But we love you," Sasuke smirked and darted forwards to steal another kiss. "Merry Christmas."
Naruto narrowed his eyes at him before he softened up and smiled. "Merry Christmas."
"Come on, we'll help," Gaara said and rolled up his sleeves. "We didn't stop early today for nothing."
"Don't let it burn," Naruto warned him while in the background their kids were trying to needle Tsunade into spilling the beans about their presents.
Sasuke listened to the arguing and watched Gaara take over the stirring while Naruto hovered nearby and he smiled.
It felt good to be home.
