Legal Disclaimer: I own my stuff, but not the original source material. That belongs to whoever. Also, the opinions and interpretations I use here may not reflect the same in said whoever that owns the source material. Look, I'm just a poor college librarian. Suing me isn't going to get you anything but tears.

Warning: This work may be offensive to some readers. Additionally, there is foreshadowing to canon major character disease and death. Feel free to back out if need be.

Author's Note: I had an idea around midterms and started writing it. Then I realized that it wasn't going to work as a single story, even if it was all taking place in a single story-verse. This series is where I'm putting them all, so that they're easy to find.

-Series Notes: This series uses a handful of headcanons that will be found in varying degrees in all the pieces. Some are spoilery so I'm not saying what they are exactly until they're revealed. Of possible contention is that this series is OMEGAVERSE with a lot of the tropes (good & bad) that go along with that. The other one is that changes to the canon are deliberate and not mistakes needing corrected. Thank you. As a final note, this collection will take place entirely pre-Season 1.
-Language Note: I will not be translating any of the non-English used throughout for Reasons. Context should provide rough definitions where more than the vibe are needed. Be warned that some of the words will be spoilers if you choose to look up exact definitions.

-Special Note for FFN: This is a collection of oneshots, not a chaptered fic. If you are wanting to read them in some semblance of chronological order, I suggest you subscribe to the series on AO3 as attempting to do that on FFN disrupts links. If you have suggestions along these lines, feel free to check the FAQs on my profile first.

Claudia Stilinski loved her garden, no matter how much gardening was regarded as not a proper interest for an alpha. She had painstakingly created each bed and feature when they had first bought the house. A path of cocoa husks mixed with pea gravel wound its way through the backyard in a meandering way that crossed upon itself frequently. The path was edged with smooth and round river stones that were a dull slate that darkened to black whenever they got wet. Only then were the sigils etched into the stones visible, just like the knot pattern of the path was only visible when viewed from the round window in the attic.

There were five special points of that garden, each carefully planned to be equal distances from each other. Nearest the house was a stone construction that could be both an oven and a grill pit, depending on where the fire was built. To the left was a trio of rowan trees that Claudia was training to grow woven tightly together. To the right was a wrought iron tree with many, many branches that ended with curled hooks to support different kinds of feeders. Between the feeder tree and the far end of the garden was a fountain shaped the Fountain of Wisdom in Cleveland, only on a slightly smaller scale to fit a backyard garden.

And at the far end of the garden, there was a round archway made of ash. It had a half-gate to block the entrance to the preserve that was directly beyond their property line. Sometimes, the Stilinskis would exit the gate and take the trail on the other side all the way to the little creek that marked the closest edge of the Hale estate within the preserve. Despite how close it was to the Stilinskis' home, the creek was far enough away from the actual Hale house that the two families rarely saw each other. It wasn't like their children had any reason to play with each other, even if Cora Hale and Mieczysław Stilinski had been born within weeks of each other.

As much as Claudia loved her garden, she loved when her son had helped her with it. From the time that her precious Mieczysław was old enough to follow instructions (which was far sooner than the average child, even if he was more easily distracted), she set about teaching him all that she knew about the many herbs and flowers that she had planted. From the rosemary on either side of the gate to the mugwort that was in a war of attrition with its mint neighbor, Mischief could weed and water by the time he had started kindergarten.

"Remember to knot in threes, mały lis," she told her soon-to-be six-year-old son as she had taught him how to harvest her garden and preserve the herbs. The embroidery thread they were using to bundle the herbs for drying was a scarlet so bright that it practically glowed in the sunlight streaming through the kitchen window. "One for each of the parts that make a person whole. Do you remember what they are?"

"The body, the mind, and the soul," Mischief replied dutifully. Under the table, he kicked his feet in the curly toed shoes he insisted on wearing that day. His stuffed wolf was perched on the chair next to him. His little fingers were deft and sure as he made bundles of sage. She kept careful watch even as she debated if he might actually be ready for the more involved process for the rowan. He might just be, despite his young age and how it would involve fire. "All fitted together like a wheel, going round and round and round."

"That's right!" Claudia cheered. She ruffled his dark curls that were so much like hers. Mischief grinned up at her, all gap-toothed and gleeful in that way that only young children could be. With the way that the sunlight hit his honey-brown eyes, they seemed to glow gold for a moment. She rubbed away a sudden ache in her head, right across the bridge of her nose.

"Mama?" Mischief questioned, instantly worried as he picked up the minute changes in her expression. Claudia gave him a smile that was strained around the edges. Her little one was just so prone to worry.

"I'm okay, kitling." She pressed a kiss to his forehead. The grandfather clock in the front room was ticking especially loud at that moment, like an unstoppable army marching ever closer. "Everything is fine."

Neither mother nor son realized it at the time, but that was the very first time that Claudia had ever lied to him.

It would not be the last.
