Author's note:
real quick, this is an updated chapter 1 that fixed some spelling/grammer mistakes, and just some straight up autocorrect errors I didn't catch.
Hey, so, FFs summary system only allows a set number of characters to be used, which is understandable, but that number of characters is far too low in my opinion, but enough about that, I'll just say what I didn't have space for in the summary. First up,I wanna say this story is inspired by "RWBY: Duelling Roses" by SeerKing here on , so if you notice similar concepts to his, that's intentional, and I highly encourage you to go check out SeerKing's story if you haven't, and especially if you like the crossover between YU-GI-OH and RWBY, but don't like what i'm about to say. This is an OC story, very little of the source material cast is going to be making an appearance in this story. I was going to use the cast of the source material, but I felt I had changed the characters so drastically that they may as well have been new characters. So I just rewrote the story with a whole new cast, and I think that's for the best. If you like team RWBY in your RWBY fanfic, that's completely understandable, and I encourage you to keep looking for a story to suit your personal tastes
Anyway, enough of my insecure ramblings, on with the story
Chapter 1: From The Bottom.
It was an ordinary evening in Vale. The streets hummed with traffic, people walked hurriedly along the sidewalk to their homes or night jobs. The many billboards and street lights illuminated the streets, casting shadows in multiple directions. It was this mundane fact that seemed to interest a short raccoon faunus who was hurriedly walking along the sidewalk, heading for the dock.
She was wrapped in a baggy dark blue cloak, with the hood draped over her head, covering her faunus ears, but unfortunately providing no protection against the general noise pollution of the city. The cloak stretched down to her ankles, her worn black boots clear to see, a necessary sacrifice as to not have her cloak run along the ground and potentially catch on objects on the ground.
In her hands, tucked tightly against her chest, she clutched tightly a mechanical component. She wasn't exactly sure what it did, but she was sure a dear friend of hers was trying to get one, so of course, when she had seen one just laying around, she made sure to scoop it up. She could just picture the bright smile she would surely receive in return! So worth it!
She arrives at a seemingly abandoned warehouse by vale's docks. She peels back a pre-cut bit of the chain link fence, effectively making a hole to slip through. From there she slips through some caution tape on the doorway, entering into a small entryway. The entryway is lined with sound-dampening panels, and as the faunus knew, there was even more inside, to hide the activity happening within. She comes to a large heavy door with a worn, clearly kit-bashed keypad. Entering the code, the door unlocks, and opens instantly allowing her to hear the activity within.
"I attack your life points directly." These words were followed by a loud draconic roar, and an explosion. Thankfully the raccoon faunus had already entered and closed the door.
"Guys! You'll never guess what I found!" The faunus exclaimed excitedly to the 3 people assembled in the warehouse, removing her hood as she did so.
The three people assembled in the warehouse could all be rather accurately described as "street scrappers." One was a young man in a worn black jacket and grey jeans, with no shirt under his jacket, his black hair dyed with a streak of blue. He was lazing on a couch with many holes and many more patches. Another was a young boy, with bright golden hair, bright green eyes, and worn clothes, noticeably not wearing shoes.
The final of this band of misfits was some sort of reptilian faunus (she was always avoiding the question of what her faunus traits hailed from) she had two black horns sprouting from the top of her head, just a couple centimeters back from her forehead, that extended back, curving with the shape of her head until they ran off the back of her head where they then pointed upwards for a couple inches. The horns contrasted sharply with her spiky silver hair that fell to about neck length and framed her face, making her red eyes, and the black scales adorning her chin and neck all the more pronounced.
She wore a dull gray zip-up tee shirt over a black undershirt, and over her over-shirt, she wore a one strap black and gold backpack, and where the strap rested on her right shoulder, scrap metal had been strapped and bolted into place to form a pauldron. She wore a dull white cape, tied around her waist that was frayed at the ends, with a black scaled tail sticking out from above said cape, the tail tipped with a large sharp, thin diamond shaped scale. underneath the cape, she wore black jeans, with scrap metal shin-guards leading down into her scuffed up combat boots. On her hands and wrists were fingerless gloves that extended up to about halfway up her forearm, and once again, scrap metal had been used to reinforce her left glove into a sorta bracer.
The scrap-iron warrior turned to face the raccoon faunus "Is it perhaps the meal I sent you to buy?" The other two perked up at that.
"Well, yeah, I got that too, but I also found something else! I'll give you a hint, it's Something Akuri's been looking fooor~"
"Oh? Now you've got me curious." The reptile faunus, now named Akuri said, moving over as her civilian model duel disk deactivated, splitting into two and retracting to either side of her arm. "What is it, Reina?"
The racoon faunus, now identified as Reina, didn't respond, and simply held out her prize, a small mechanical component. It appeared to be a circuit board, with 6 small clear tubes attached, not unlike the vials you might see attached to a syringe.
Akuri's face immediately changed to an expression of concern "Reina, where did you get this?"
"A dumpster behind an electronics shop. Why do you look so upset? Didn't you say you wanted a dust cartridge loader for your duel disk?"
"you're right," Akuri took a deep breath. "I was just worried it may have been stolen. If it was, then the police would be able to track it once it was installed."
"Oh… well it's not…! Promise!" Reina asserted confidently. "So… can you use it?"
Akuri held the item up to the light "well… it's pretty dirty, probably from the dumpster, but nothing I can't handle. I was planning to clean it anyway. The manufacturer limiter is intact, so If I want to use this in any serious capacity, I'll have to remove that. But other than those two things… it seems to be in fine condition. No idea why someone would just throw it away."
"Cause well-off people are morons." Said the man on the couch, who by this point has been given a wrapped sandwich by Reina, of which he takes a large bite, then talks with his mouth full "they throw away things others can use cause they don't give a damn about anyone but themselves."
"They're not all bad Leo." The little boy asserted, quietly. "There was a nice lady the other day who gave me a new pair of shoes…!"
"And you're not wearing them because…?" Akuri asked leadingly.
The little boy opens his mouth to reply, but a stern look from Akuri made him reconsider, before he walked away, and set his duel disk, that he had just been using to duel Akuri, on a crate. Then he reached into a backpack labeled "Joey" and pulled out a pair of heavily worn socks, and shoes that, while clearly newer than any clothing anyone in the room had on, were still somewhat worn. He then proceeded to put them on, and struggle with tying his laces.
Leo walks over to help him, as Akuri smiles softly to herself, and heads to her work bench to start working on the component.
The rest of the evening has passed by as most do for the group, with them talking, playing duel monsters, and in the case of Reina and Akuri, full contact sparring. It was now late into the night, with most of the group having settled into makeshift beds in a custom insulated part of the warehouse. Akuri however was still awake, and was still at her work bench.
She had installed the component and was now loading the dust cartridges. All was going well, with any luck she'd actually be able to make a decent showing at th-
'someones here.' She thought. 'not just anyone. Awakened aura. Powerful. Almost certainly a trained huntsmen or huntress.' She glanced at the section of the warehouse where her found-family slept. '... Sorry guys, but I promised I'd give you a chance at something better. Even if I don't get to go with you.'
Her mind set, she grabs her deck, closes the hatch on her duel disk, and inserts her deck into the deck slot, then inserts her arm into the duel disks wrist strap, and tightens. She stands, heading for the exit.
She steps outside and finds a woman, seeming waiting for her. She has long blonde hair, and green eyes, accentuated by her oval rim glasses. Her white blouse contrasted elegantly with her black skirt, and dark stockings. Akuri noted with incredulity that this woman had worn stiletto heels to a junkyard. On her left arm was a purple huntress-model duel disk.
The huntress stared at Akuri, appraisingly. She was genuinely surprised that she had come out, rather than having been caught off guard inside. The huntress made a mental note not to underestimate this girl, even if she did appear to be a simple thief. Though even with that note, she couldn't help but feel such tasks as arresting an electronics thief was beneath her, but the component she stole had the capacity to utilize dust, and so by law the police were required to refer the case to a huntsman or huntress, and she has been closest when the beacon went live.
"My name is Glynda Goodwitch, licensed huntress, and you probably don't need me to explain why I'm here." She stated "but as the law commands, so I shall abide. You are hereby under arrest for the theft of a dust cartridge loader to be used in commercial duel disk models. As the model you stole was only compatible with the academy model, and you're wearing the civilian model, I'll assume you have the item on your person, as the tracking beacon is reading. Hand it over willingly, and I'll let you off with a bit of community service."
"No deal." Akuri declares confidently "counter offer, we duel for it." Upon finishing her sentence, her duel disk activates, the front plate swinging around to join the back plate to form one continuous and complete duel field.
"So you're going to be difficult about this are you?" Glynda asks, with an exasperated sigh. "Very well, I'll duel you. If you lose, you're coming with me back to the station, where You're going to tell me all about your short friend in the blue cloak that the security cameras caught."
"... And if I win, you're going to personally recommend me for enrollment at beacon." Akuri demanded.
Glynda was stunned by that demand. 'This kid wants to go to beacon!? Then why is she taking the fall for some petty thief? There's more here I'm not understanding… I'll have to get her to talk during the duel. Something tells me there's more to this girl than meets the eye.' She lifts her arm, her duel disk's field first extending outwards, then the secondary field panel extends from the first, revealing 5 monster and spell/trap zones, and thus, a complete field.
"I accept your wager." Glynda declares confidently "duel!" As both players draw their opening hands of 5 cards, the hologram projectors of the duel disks flare to life, and a hologram displaying both players life points appears above each of their duel disks.

"I'll go first!" Glynda proclaims, "draw! … I'll summon D.D. Warrior lady in attack mode!" She places the card in the monster zone of her duel disk. In a bright flash, A blond woman in dark plate armor holding a glimmering silver sword appears in front of Glynda, standing ready to defend her summoner. A hologram box next to it displays 1500ATK "Then I'll place two cards face down, and end my turn."
Akuri draws silently, and without the usual flourish a lot of academy students seem to have, (a trait Glynda found rather refreshing) then examined her hand a moment. "I'll summon Red Eyes Wyvern in attack mode." she places the card on her duel disk, a black wyvern appearing, with glowing red eyes it roars in defiance and stands ready to do battle, and a hologram appears that displays 1800ATK "then I'll set 1 card face down, and end my turn."
"You're not attacking?" Glynda asks in genuine surprise.
"D.D warrior lady's effect banishes any monster it battles, regardless of whether it wins the battle." Akuri states calmly. "For me to attack would be foolish. Especially with those two facedowns of yours. One of em could be mirror force, or worse, you could just let the attack go through and eat the damage."
'she's at least somewhat experienced. I can say that for certain now.' Glynda thinks 'guess I should stop playing cautious.'
"I see. Draw." She draws a card, adding it to her hand. "I'll activate 1 of my face downs, my eternal soul trap card." One of the holograms of the face down cards stands up to reveal a dark pink bordered card with art depicting a stone tablet with the visage of an ancient magician. "This allows me to special summon a Dark Magician from my hand or graveyard once per turn. This time, I'll choose my hand. Come on out, my faithful scion! Dark magician!"
Glynda places the card on her duel disk, and in a flash of light, a magician adorned in black robes wielding a staff tipped with a black ornament appears, standing tall and confident. A hologram appears displaying 2500ATK
"Let's move right into the action, dark magician, attack red eyes wyvern. Dark magic attack!" Glynda exclaims, and dark magician follows her command, leaping into the air and bringing his staff to point directly at the wyvern, an orb of dark magic forming at the top, before shooting out in a blast of destructive power straight towards the wyvern. It's obliterated on the spot, and the hologram displaying Akuri's life points deducts the battle damage.

"Now, D.D warrior lady! Attack her life points directly." Glynda declares, hoping to end this duel quickly.
"I activate a trap card of my own." Akuri states "Red Eyes spirit." Her face down hologram stands to reveal a trap card depicting a red eyes black dragon rising from a mass of brilliant gold light "this trap card simply allows me to special summon a "red eyes" monster from my graveyard. So welcome back Red Eyes Wyvern." The gold light erupts from the trap cards hologram, and from that light, emerges the returned Wyvern.
"Smart move." Glynda commends Akuri "you expected I wouldn't attack with D.D first to conserve life points, so you planned for the case that your monster would be in the grave, not banished. Well, let's fix that. D.D, destroy that wyvern, permanently."
D.D warrior lady rushes red eyes wyvern, who unleashes a blast of fire, incinerating the warrior, however, her sword still flies through the flames and pierces the dragons heart, where it then dissolves into dust. Akuri takes the card from her monster zone, place it into the banished card compartment, on the opposite side of the duel disk from the graveyard.
"My turn. Draw." Akuri declares. "... Perfect. I'll activate the effect of Red Eyes Alternative Black Dragon in my hand! This allows me to tribute a "Red Eyes" monster from my hand, and then special summon Alternative. I'll tribute this Red Eyes Black Dragon from my hand, and then special summon, my ever faithful guardian, Red Eyes Alternative Black Dragon!" She then places the monster card on her middle monster zone, and a large black dragon appears, with red glowing energy flowing in lines across it's body like veins. The dragon roars loudly as it takes the field, and eyes dark magician menacingly. A hologram appears displaying 2400ATK
'i've not seen that card before,' Glynda mused internally, 'but much like Blue Eyes Alternative White Dragon, it seems to be a monster who's effect allows one the power of their original form, without having to tribute monsters from the field.'
"An impressive monster," Glynda acknowledges out loud "but it still lacks 100 attack points necessary to destroy my dark magician."
"True." Akuri admits, then grins "but she does have a pretty kick-ass effect to help me deal with that little problem."
'she's smiling. Seems this duel is becoming rather entertaining for her.' Glynda notes
"Red eyes!" Akuri calls "attack dark magician!"
'As I guessed. It must have some sort of effect that boosts its power during battle.' Glynda deduces 'sorry Miss Akuri, you're more talented than I thought, but this is as far as you go.' red eyes rears her head back to blast white-hot fire at dark magician, the flames rapidly closing the distance.
"I activate my trap card." Glynda declares. She hits a button on her duel disk, and her remaining face-down hologram stands, revealing a trap card depicting a circular transparent wall repelling some force. "You were right Akuri, I did have Mirror Force set, and now, your attack is negated, and all your attack position monsters are destroyed."
Red Eyes' flames make contact with the invisible barrier, and are reflected back towards Akuri's field, destroying Red Eyes Alternative Black Dragon. And when the dust clears… Akuri is smiling brightly as a card slides out of her duel disks graveyard compartment, Causing Glynda to raise an eyebrow
"Thanks for that." Akuri says, as she places the card on her duel disks monster zone "cause Alternative's effect wasn't anything that was gonna help her win that fight. You see, when Alternative is destroyed by battle or card effect, I can special summon a Red Eyes monster from my graveyard, And if that monster's name is "Red Eyes Black Dragon"... Well it's Original attack points become doubled!"
A new dragon appears in a flash of light, identical to the last, but missing the glowing red lines of energy. It then surges with power, being enveloped in red energy as it's power increases. As the energy subsides, it's eyes glow a bright fiery red, burning with power. A hologram appears displaying 4800ATK.
Glynda stares in shock, as Akuri orders the beast to attack, it blasts pure crimson energy at her dark magician, reducing him to ash in an instant as the beam then impacts Glynda directly. 'thank dust this isn't an extra summon!' She exclaims mentally as she shields her eyes from the intense light of the hologram attack.

"Remarkable." Glynda commends "I didn't even know that monster existed, much less that it could create a monster that powerful."
"Your turn." Akuri says with a smile, and feint blush at the praise.
"Quite right. Draw." Glynda draws, looking at the dark magician she just drew. "I can tell you right now, with the cards in my hand, I have no plays that destroy that monster, and while I could just play a monster or two in defense mode and stall until I drew a spell or trap that would destroy your dragon… I think you and I both know you'll likely have beaten me before I can do that. So." She places her hand over her deck "I surrender."
"What!? But it was just getting good!" Damnit!" Akuri exclaims in despair as the holograms dissipate, and their duel disks shut down. She then sighs "well, I guess this is the part where you cuff me and bring me to the police station right?" She asks, holding her hands out.
"What!? No!" Glynda exclaims, offended "why would you just assume I would go back on my word!? I took your wager, so now I'm going to get you into beacon."

"WAIT WHAT!?"
END OF CHAPTER 1
Author's note
Thank you so much for reading this far, I really appreciate it. If you liked it, thanks! Don't feel pressured to do any to show support, it's more than enough to know someone enjoyed it. If you didn't like it, maybe leave some constructive criticism on how I could improve.
Few things I wanna note about the story,
1, there are gonna be cards that appear in this story that I personally made up, to either fill out an archetype with something that makes said archetype more viable, or just to give certain archetypes new and interesting stuff, if that bothers you, this may not be the Yu-Gi-Oh story for you. Just so you know, I didn't use any in this chapter, but in the future I will. When I do so, the first time a character says the name of a card I made up, I will place an asterisk next to the name.
Example: "Red Eyes Crystal Drake."*
2. Potentially unimportant lore thing, but I felt it was worth mentioning, There are 4 general models of duel disks in this world. The first is the civilian model. This is the battle city/ duel monsters duel disk, the classic, the og, used famously by Yugi Moto and Yusei Fudo. The second, is the academy duel disk. The academy duel disk is the standard GX duel disk. Like the one Jaden Yuuki uses. The third duel disk is the huntsmen/huntress model. This is the 5ds duel disk, for a reference, think of Akiza's duel disk. The fourth are custom duel disks, often used by those of wealth and status, or seasoned huntsmen/huntresses. think things like the Supreme Kings duel disk from GX.
3. I'm rather bad at describing characters' appearance, and clothes especially. For Akuri, whom I go the most in detail for in this chapter, I imagine an Au Ra from FF14 wearing an outfit that's a cross between late naruto:shippuden Sasuke, and ichigo's outfit after his oken cloak is destroyed by candice in the thousand year blood war. Dunno if that helped, or just outed me as an edgelord (like giving my protagonist a red eyes deck didn't already do that.)
4. Updates on this story will likely be slow, as I have a life to live outside of writing, and I don't want to force myself to write, as I find that produces really bad writing.
Alright, that should be it. Once again, thank you so much for reading, and see you in the next chapter.
