"Where are we now?" Avalon asked Sara as they were both in the bridge.
"Star city. My time." Sara replied as she looked to her daughter, "You ready to meet your grandfather?"
Avalon shrugged, "I never had a grandfather before."
"Well, you have nothing to worry about. He's one of the best men I know, and I know that he's going to love you."
Avalon gave a nod, "Does he know about me?"
"Well, not exactly. Not yet. Communication aboard a time ship is a little tricky."
The teen hummed, "Oh…okay."
Sara and Avalon were the last ones to leave the Waverider. Everyone made sure to say goodbye to Sara, giving her a hug as if they were going to be gone for a long time. It was just a week so everyone could have some off to see their families.
As they stepped into the cargo bay, Sara stopped Avalon briefly, gently grabbing the girl's arm to pull her back. Avalon turned around, staring at Sara questioningly. Of course, she wasn't that eager to leave and meet her grandfather, but she didn't understand what this delay was about.
"Did you forget something, Mom?"
"Not exactly." Sara replied, "But I do think we should talk about something before we leave."
Avalon tilted her head as she raised an eyebrow, "I have nothing to talk about."
"I do." The blonde insisted, "It's about you. I think you should talk to the police about your parents. You should report them for what they did to you."
The teen turned her head away, "I don't want to talk about that."
"It's a sure-fire way to strip away your parents' parental rights." Sara added, "They will go to jail. You and your baby will be safe."
"You can't know that for certain. I can't prove that my mother knew about my father's deal with me." Avalon snapped, "It's not like there was a written contract. It was a verbal agreement between me and my father. He spoke to me alone in my room."
Sara grabbed the teen by the shoulders, holding her firmly to maintain eye contact, "I'll fight for you. You trust me, right?"
The teen nodded, "Of course, but…."
"But nothing." The blonde interrupted, "I love you, Avi. I want to adopt you, and I am fighting for you, but we need something more to fight against your parents with."
Avalon sighed reluctantly, "Okay, but can we wait until after I meet your dad and sister?"
Sara gave a nod, draping an arm around Avalon's shoulders, "Of course."
It didn't take long for the two to arrive at the police station where Quinten worked. Sara wanted Avalon to meet Laurel too but decided to visit her father first.
Sara walked inside the police station before Avalon, leaving the teen in the hallway, just around the corner, a few feet behind her. Sara wanted to prepare her father, before calling in her teenage child.
"Hi Daddy." Sara uttered
Quinten glanced over, standing up from his desk and hugging his youngest daughter tightly, "Sara, I didn't know you were coming into town."
Sara hugged her father back, "Yeah. Well, the legends needed some vacation time. Plus, I have someone that I'd like for you to meet."
"Is it another girlfriend?" Quinten questioned, "This one's not an assassin, right?"
"No, and no." She replied, pulling away, and turning around to face the hallway, "Come on, sweetheart. It's okay."
Avalon gingerly stepped into view of Quinten. She was very nervous and scared, wondering whether or not he would like her. Or if he would be like her own father. She couldn't tell what he was thinking from the stunned expression on his face.
"Dad, this is Avi. My daughter."
"What?!" Quinten exclaimed
Avalon bites her lip, stepping slightly behind Sara, "Um…not yet technically."
She clarified, mostly for his case, so he knew it wasn't permanent yet. Just in case he felt uneasy or angry about a pregnant teenager being his granddaughter.
"Yeah. I'm in the process of adopting her." Sara explained, smiling proudly.
She moved aside to allow Avalon to be visible. But recognising that the teen was uncomfortable, Sara took Avalon's hand, giving it a gentle, reassuring squeeze.
"She's….you're pregnant." Quinten observed about Avalon.
The fourteen year old nodded, "Yeah. I am. Wasn't really my choice, and it wasn't my fault."
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Avi."
"You too, sir."
Quinten smiled, shaking his head, "No. No 'sir'. Quinten is fine. Or you could call me Grandpa."
"Okay." Avalon replied
She stayed close to Sara, still holding her hand as she felt pretty nervous about Quinten. He seemed nice, but her father was a nice man too. A nice man who raped his own daughter for the sake of having another child.
"How did you two meet?" Quinten asked
Sara smiled at the memory, "It's a bit of an interesting story."
Quinten nods, "So…Avi, your baby…?"
"It's a girl. I've decided on the name Canary Lyra, with the nickname Birdie."
He hums, "I like it."
"Thank you, sir…I mean….Grandpa." She tried out the word, saying it for the first time ever in her life.
Quinten smiled, liking the way the new moniker sounded. Though it was a bit weird that his first grandchild is a teenager who would be giving him a great-grandchild in probably two to three months. It didn't seem like anything in his life, or even in his family was normal anymore, and it all started after Sara decided to go with Oliver Queen on his boat 'The Gambit'.
"I was also wanting Avi to meet Laurel." Sara uttered, "Is Laurel at work? Or where is she?"
"Well, yeah, she's probably at work. Workaholic, that's what she is."
Sara laughed, "Like you, dad. You know Laurel takes after you."
Quinten shook his head, "And you are so much like your mother."
After a few minutes, Sara exchanged goodbyes with her father before heading to Laurel's work - the DA's office - with Avalon.
Avalon wasn't as nervous to meet Laurel as she had been to meet Quinten. However, when they arrived at the DA's office, Laurel wasn't there.
Sara wondered where her sister could be. Usually at this hour of the day, Laurel would be at work. She always worked really late. Although, it was possible that she was at home, but not very likely.
"Hey Mom?" Avalon uttered, "Didn't your dad…didn't Grandpa say that your sister would be at work?"
Sara nodded, "Yeah. Because she usually is."
"Then where is she?"
"I don't know."
Sara took out her phone and called Laurel, but it went straight to voicemail. She tried calling a few more times, but still no answer. And she didn't hear the phone ring inside the office, so it seemed that Laurel was at home after all.
Sara made a decision. "Let's go check her apartment, she might have taken the day off," she suggested to Avalon, who nodded in agreement.
After a short walk, they arrived at Laurel's apartment complex. Sara knocked on the door, but there was no answer. She tried again, but still no response.
"Laurel, it's me, Sara." she called out, but there was still no answer.
Sara reached into her pocket and pulled out a set of lockpicks. She had learned how to pick locks during her time in the League of Assassins, and it had proven to be a useful skill in her line of work.
Avalon's eyes widened in surprise as she watched her mother work to pick the lock with ease.
"You know how to do that?" she asked in amazement.
Sara smiled at her daughter, "There are a lot of things I know how to do that might surprise you," she said.
"You gotta teach me that!" Avalon exclaimed as the door clicked open.
"Not a chance." Sara replied as they entered the apartment cautiously. The place was trashed, glass broken all over the floor.
Sara sighed. This wasn't a good sign. It looked like foul play, like Laurel had been kidnapped and was in trouble. She pulled out her phone and called Oliver.
When he picked up, she spoke, "Hey Ollie, I need you. I think Laurel is in trouble."
"What do you need, Sara?" He responded
"I need someone to watch my kid."
Avi stared at Sara, "No way! I'm not leaving you!"
"Hold on, Ollie." She moved the phone away from her ear, "I need to find my sister, and I need you to be safe."
"I'll stay with Grandpa. But I don't want you to go into possible danger alone."
Sara nodded, "I don't doubt that Grandpa can protect you, but Ollie is a little more trained than Grandpa. I don't know who took Laurel and I want to be cautious in case someone is targeting my family."
Avi sighed, "Fine. I'll stay with Ollie."
"That's Uncle Ollie to you."
"Okay Mom."
Sara put the phone back up to her ear, "Sorry about that, Ollie. Where should I meet you?"
"Verdant. Your kid will be safe down in my bunker."
"Right. See you soon." She replied, "And do you mind if I borrow Diggle as backup."
Oliver hummed, "Not at all. See you soon, Sara."
"Thanks for everything, Ollie."
