Xander and Cordelia materialized on a dust bowl of a world.
"I don't know who you are, but I suggest you run!" A voice yelled, as two people, a man and a woman, raced past them. "Before the swarm gets you!"
"The swarm?" Xander asked, turning around. His eyes got big as he got a good look at what was headed towards them. They looked like giant stingrays, with huge gaping mouths hanging open under their bodies. Without a thought, Xander started blasting them with fireballs. "Run, Cordy!"
"Fire isn't going to help!" The man yelled. "Not unless it's a whole lot hotter, they're covered in metal!"
"Good to know!" Xander yelled back, as he used telekinesis to slam some into each other, running sideways as he did so, keeping the others behind him. Then they were inside a structure and doors where slamming shut in front of him.
"Okay, when I said alien planet, I did not mean one with monsters on it, Xander!" Cordelia was scared and when she was scared, she was loud. Baby was shaking, he had no idea what was going on, but he was scared too. Poor little guy was crying.
"Shh Baby, it's okay. We won't let them hurt you, I promise." Cordelia assured the little hyena, cuddling him close.
"What exactly is the swarm?" Xander asked. "Are they organic or living machines?"
"Organic, but eat anything, including metal, which they used to create a metallic exoskeleton. Once they've devoured everything on a planet's surface, they rip a hole in spacetime and create a artificial wormhole. They'll end up on another planet where they'll start all over again. They're acting on instinct, not intelligent enough to do anything more. I'm the Doctor, by the way. And you are?"
"Alexander McCleod, people call me Xander and this is my girlfriend, Cordelia Chase. The little guy she's holding is Baby. He's a hyena. Is Doctor a title or a name?"
"Could be both. I use it as my name. This is my friend, Martha Jones."
"I actually am planning to have the title Doctor, I'm in medical school." The lovely dark skinned lady with an English accent told them. "I'm from Earth, he's from Gallifrey. Which makes him an alien."
"And if we were on Gallifrey, you'd be the alien." He told her, moving to the console at the center of the room.
"It's nice to see another human." Martha to!d them.
"You're assuming we're human." Xander answered. "Technically speaking, we're both half human. I've never heard of Gallifrey. But I suppose it explains why you have two hearts."
"How did you know that?" Martha asked, surprised.
"I See what is hidden. The second heart is different. The difference makes it noticable for me."
"Do you see things too?" Martha asked Cordelia.
"I get premonitions, which is a different kind of seeing. So anyone going to do anything about the rampaging hoard of scary monsters back there?"
"They're animals." The Doctor told her. "They're doing what animals do."
"And what's the difference if they're invading planets to do what they do?" Xander asked. "Is a certain level of intelligence necessary before fighting back becomes an option?"
"Well, it's just, they don't know any better. And they could evolve into something that could learn to know better." The Doctor protested.
"And all the races that die waiting for them to get to that point?" Cordelia asked. "What might they have evolved into, given the chance?"
"While he's thinking about that, I've got a question." Martha said. "Why aren't you guys flipping out over the TARDIS?"
"Is that what this ship is called?" Xander asked.
"It short for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space." Marth answered. "And I'm referring to the fact that it's bigger on the inside then the outside."
"The inside is in a pocket dimension." Xander answered. "I knew that they theoretically existed before I learned how to make them. Although I didn't know they could have both an entrance and an exit point, but I suppose with enough power. Anyway, I've currently got six of them attached to me with weapons and supplies stowed in them. Cordy's got four. They have her weapons, and hers and Baby's supplies in them. This ship is the largest example of a pocket dimension I've ever seen, but I still understand it."
"Bigger then you think, actually." The Doctor replied. "The engine is fueled by a captured sun on the verge of a supernova. The energy potential allows us to travel in both time and space."
"Cool." Xander said. "We're reality and occasionally time traveling ourselves. You know, Cordy. This gives me an idea. Back when we were working at the Warehouse, I commented that I wished I could have brought my car with us. But if we go back to the Warehouse and get one those build a house kits from Eureka, I could store one in a pocket dimension and we'd always have a place to sleep. The kits are collapsible after all."
"Your birthday is in just a few days. It would be a great time to visit. I say we do it." Cordy agreed.
"I had another thought." Xander said. "You said those things create an artificial wormhole in order to get to another planet. Why not preempt them? Create your own wormhole and send them somewhere where they won't cause any problems. If you can capture a sun to power your ship, I'm sure creating an artificial wormhole isn't outside your wheelhouse. If you're squeemish about killing them enmass, then just cage them and make sure they're fed on a regular basis, so they don't get antsy and try to escape. Sounds like a win win to me."
"Me too." Cordelia said. "Well, we need to get going. It's nice to meet you both. Good luck at medical school." She took Xander's hand and he pressed the button on the control device. An electric tingle and the world shifted.
