Revenge:
Dan Granger was angry, more than angry, he was furious, but there was another emotion he was feeling, he was sad, and he felt lost. He had buried his wife of twenty two years that day and now he wanted to kill those that tortured and murdered his wife. Death eaters.
Hermione had explained about the war with Voldemort and his death eaters. She had told her parents all about Harry Potter and how thanks to him, Voldemort was gone, but not his death eaters. Hermione also explained how many of the death eaters had paid their way out of jail. There was one more thing that their daughter had explained to her parents. Voldemort wasn't dead and Harry had been told that he would return one day.
Dan and Jean had been working on plans to move to another country, but they hadn't been able to convince their daughter it was for the best. Hermione even went so far as to say that if they forced her to leave, she would leave them and return to England the moment she was seventeen, which was only a couple of years. Hermione had just finished her third year and in a few months she would turn fifteen. They knew she would be classed as an adult in the wizarding world in two more years and they also knew their daughter would do what she threatened, she would leave them and return to England. That is the reason the Grangers had not left.
'If she only had listened, then Jean would still be alive,' Dan growled angrily, 'I believe it's time to get out of this house before those murderers kill me. I'll go to the country home, which is in Jean's maiden name. No one in the wizarding world would find it or me, not even Hermione since she hasn't been there since she was only three years old.' He couldn't help himself but he also blamed his daughter for his wife's death. He wanted away from Hermione as well.
Dan began to make plans, a lot of plans. He was also going to sell the house. If Hermione wanted to stay, then she could stay with that lot. He made a few phone calls, one to his lawyer who could organise the sale of the dental practice and the house. He booked a company to pack up and remove everything from the house, apart from his own clothes and a few personal items. Once he was done, he wrote a letter to his daughter, who had returned to the Weasley family's home after the funeral. He would send it off by normal post as he had been told it would find it's way to his daughter.
That night, Dan had a few too many drinks of rum as he thought about how to get his revenge. One thing came to him, often. He remembered Jean reading one of the letters that the boy Harry Potter had written to Hermione. In the letter, Harry wrote that all death eaters need to die. If given any type of chance, they would continue to kill. Even though he didn't want to kill anyone, he could easily deal with those death eaters. There was one letter that Dan read that Harry had written not long after the end of Hermione's second year. Harry wrote that one of those death eaters that paid his way out of jail had tried to kill him and he was also the reason that a sixty foot basilisk was released inside the castle. It was luck that no one died. Harry wrote that he hoped to be the one to kill Lucius Malfoy.
Dan had gone through every single letter that Harry wrote to Hermione but he also read the letters, which were few, from Ron to Hermione. One thing stood out to Dan, that it took three Weasley boys to break Harry out of a locked and barred room where he was slowly being starved, yet for some reason, no adult seemed to want to help and hadn't helped the boy at all, not since his parents died.
It wasn't until two days after he had finished reading every single letter to his daughter that Dan finally made a decision. He sat at the dining table and began to write his letter, to Harry Potter, the-boy-who-lived. Once he posted that, he picked up the phone to ring a friend, who hopefully would be able to help.
Harry Potter finished reading the letter that had come in the normal post. When he had been told to get the mail, he did, then saw one with his name on it. Harry instantly put the letter into one of his pockets, until he got a chance to read it.
'Even though Hermione might not agree with me about those people like Malfoy, her parents seem like decent people. But I like the fact that Mr Granger was not going to turn up alone, he was bringing a friend, who worked for child services.'
Harry thought about what could happen when those two men arrived. He knew they would not be bullied by Vernon, not when a man who worked for the government came to their door. Harry also liked the idea that Mr Granger was going to bring the letter that Ron wrote to Hermione about the bars on his window and locks on the door, but also about the part had explained how Harry hadn't been fed in four days when he and his brothers broke Harry out. Harry thought if things went ok, for him, he would show them the cupboard and the old drawings he did when he was little.
It didn't take much before Petunia and Vernon signed the form relinquishing custody of Harry. Dan's friend had already worked on having Dan approved to take over as guardian of Harry.
It had been two weeks since Harry moved in with Dan and it had taken them that long to begin to get to know each other. It was also during this time that he realised that Dan had the same belief as he did. One other thing Harry realised was that Dan, who was a wonderful man and his now dead wife who seemed like a wonderful woman, was disappointed in their daughter. Harry thought Hermione was being unkind to such wonderful people and she seemed to be slowly distancing herself from her parents. Even though Hermione just lost her mother, she did not stay to help her father through his loss, she went straight back to the Weasley's.
Harry thought something was seriously wrong with Hermione. He had lost his parents and would give anything, including giving up magic to have them back. Hermione had her parents, but seemed to spend most of her time away from them. She just lost her mother but it was like she didn't care.
'Even though we're friends, I've been disappointed in Hermione, especially in this last year. I can tell you about it later. She knows how hard my life has been because of losing my parents, it's like it means nothing to her that she lost her mother.'
'Jean meant nothing to her, at least not since she went to that school. We noticed how she spent hardly any time with us those first summer holidays after her first year. During Christmas, she was a little quieter but we never picked up that anything was wrong. But during the summer holidays, it was like we had a person in the house we didn't know who was just staying there. She spent all her time in her room apart from meals. She even stopped helping with the chores. Jean didn't say anything until Hermione asked her to take her shopping as she needed some clothes and wanted some books. I thought Jean was going to yell, but she didn't. She said that since Hermione had not done any chores or even spend time with her parents, who is the people who pay for everything she wants or needs, then she would not be taking her anywhere or buying her anything. Jean told her she would have to get a part time job and earn her own money. It seemed to shock Hermione at first, then she just shrugged and went back to her room. Two days later, Arthur and Ron Weasley turned up to take her to the Burrow.'
'I went there a few weeks later. I found out that if we were careful, we could do magic. We just couldn't let the older Weasley's know, or Percy. I had Mrs Weasley shrink some of my cousins overly large clothes, but she also repaired them so they looked new. None of Hermione's clothes looked small or worn out.'
'So that's why she wanted to go to the Burrow. She said to us it was so she could read more books for her next year at Hogwarts. She said that there were all seven year lots of books at the burrow from the older children. We always believed in education so we let her go. We did hope that whatever she had against us would eventually work itself out, then she would come back to us. It was worse the following year. She didn't want to come home for Christmas and only stayed with us for three weeks during the summer. That was only because we were going to France and she wanted to find out what the magical shops were like over there.'
'Sounds to me like she's giving up on this world and she wants the wizarding world. I'm not all that fussed with the wizarding world. It wouldn't worry me if I lost my magic, which can't happen. So far, I've almost died a dozen times when I'm there. Magic will make life easier once I'm older and can use it outside of Hogwarts but I really think I'm better off staying in the real world.'
'Even though you explained a lot more than Hermione did in those letters she sent us, if we had known any of what you children had been put through, I would never have allowed Hermione to go. Now due to being involved in that world, I lost my Jean and our daughter doesn't seem to care. I want to get those that took Jean from me, I'm just not sure how I can when I can't see things like Hogwarts or any warded place.'
'That's where I can help, we just need to work out how to find his home. The wizarding world doesn't have things like phone directories where you can get someone's address.'
'I had an idea when you first explained about wards and enchantments. I wondered if those type of spells only work on people and not equipment, like satellites.'
'I don't know much about satellites but I did talk to a man my parents knew. When I wasn't allowed to go to Hogsmeade, we spent a lot of time together. I asked him about the wall at platform nine and three quarters and the camera's that seem to be popping up around London. Remus explained about the muggle repelling ward that is about ten feet around that brick wall, no muggles take any notice of that area. He also said that someone from the ministry always make sure those camera's are not pointing at the wall or it would see us walking then disappearing. They keep moving the camera's so it's never pointing at that area.'
'That tells me these enchantments won't work on technology like satellites or camera's.'
'I don't know anything about satellites and only a bit about camera's, normal picture taking camera's. The Dursley's would never allow me to learn or watch anything on the television. That's why I asked you if we could watch documentaries and get books on things from this world.'
'You are learning now and I'll help with that. I also wanted to find out if you were interested in staying in this world or returning to Hogwarts. I know you said you can pay for yourself, but I've already begun to care for you, like a son, so I would like to help you with your education. As you know, I've sold everything and in the process of buying another home before selling this place. I wouldn't have to work again, not if I didn't want to. I know I will eventually, just not for a while. But I want to disappear, I want to make sure no one in that world can find me.'
'I had pretty much made up my mind about not returning. I can't trust anyone there and apart from Ron, Fred and George helping me a year ago, no one has ever helped me. Even when those boys told their parents about me being locked up at starved, none of them tried to help me live somewhere else all because Dumbledore said I have to stay there. I always plan to run away, I just figured I should look a little older where no one would get suspicious of a young boy being alone.'
'You're about to turn fourteen, that would not get anyone suspicious if you were seen alone. If you stay here, then we can work on a normal school for you but I can also help since I've already been through school and university. We would just need to make sure you are not recognised.'
'I already thought of that. I figured I could dye my hair then use muggle make-up to cover my scar. I can't do much about wearing glasses though.'
'Ah, this is where I can help Harry. First your scar. I'm sure you've heard of plastic surgery. It would be easy to get that scar removed. Also, you could also have laser surgery done on your eyes. Naturally they would need to be checked first but unless your eyes are really bad, I believe it could be fixed. Being in the medical field, I have a lot of friends who are doctors and surgeons. We can work on that if you wish.'
Harry couldn't help smiling. That told Dan all he needed to know. Now he knew he could help Harry and when the boy lost his famous scar and those glasses, it would be time for them to work on plans to deal with the man and his son who had taken his Jean from him, Lucius Malfoy.
It was only thanks to him finding some long blond hair and a snake head next to Jean's body that gave him some information. When he told Harry, he was able to tell Dan just who the man was. Now hopefully some non magical technology can find the home where the man lived.
It was easy, Harry had his scar fixed, now there was an unblemished skin on his forehead. His eyes had been fixed and now he was back home with Dan, he dyed his hair to a light brown, almost blond. Dan had been doing some research and also using Harry's invisibility cloak to sneak into places so he could get satellite pictures of Wiltshire. Harry spotted the house straight away.
'How do you know it's his and not some other wealthy family?' Dan asked.
'I heard Draco Malfoy telling Pansy Parkinson about his father's peacocks. He breeds them. Draco was going on about all the shit around the property.'
'You can easily see the peacocks in these pictures. Alright, we've identified the place. We know about the stuff we have to get to bring that place down. Now we have to decide when to do this?'
'Even though Draco is my age, he's turning out like his father. I think the whole family need to go so it will have to be before he returns to Hogwarts.'
'Then let's do it the night before. That will give us time to get everything we need. Being able to get past the muggle repelling charm while holding your arm will help. All I have to do is set it all up while you keep watch. Once it blows, we'll catch a flight out of this country.'
'Sounds good to me,' Harry gave Dan a small smile. Even though he had really come to care for Dan, he felt terrible for the man. He lost his wife and his daughter decided she didn't want anything to do with him. Harry thought sooner or later Hermione would realise what she had lost.
It was a month later that Dan and Harry flew out of Great Britain. As the plane flew away from England, the ministry aurors were investigating how Malfoy manor had collapsed and killed not only the three Malfoy's, but many others who had been there having dinner. The large group of people who were killed had all been death eaters and their families.
Dan didn't know that as he was settling into the flight, Hermione had turned up at the house that she had grown up in only to find the house had been sold. Apart from being shocked, she was furious that she could not find her father to ask for money to pay for her Hogwarts things along with new robes. The Weasley's did not mind that she lived with them, but they could not afford to buy her stuff for Hogwarts or books that Hermione loves to buy.
With some more magic to alter Hermione's old clothes and robes, she returned to Hogwarts wearing old clothes. She realised she made a mistake by distancing herself from her parents, now she was basically broke and homeless. She had no idea how to find her father and right now, she couldn't as she was returning to Hogwarts. She could not look for him until the Christmas holidays at the earliest.
It was on the train that Ron Weasley realised Harry wasn't there. He spoke with his twin brothers and all three boys believed Harry finally said enough and left Hogwarts but also left the Dursley's, for good. There was nothing they could do, not until they got to Hogwarts.
It was that night that the twins asked Hermione more about her father disappearing and if he might have taken Harry with him.
'They never met so I doubt it. My father was angry about mum. He sold everything including our home. He probably bought another place, I just have to find it. But Harry wouldn't be with him since they didn't know each other. Harry probably left the Dursley's and he's gone into hiding somewhere instead of letting professor Dumbledore know.'
'He wouldn't tell Dumbledore when it was him that kept telling Harry he had to return to the muggles.'
'For his safety. Professor Dumbledore said Harry would be safe but only if he lived with his mother's blood, her sister.'
'I don't think Harry would care,' Fred said.
'Not after the way those people treated him,' George said, then the twins walked away. They knew there was no use trying to talk to Hermione. She believed in Dumbledore, but they knew he was wrong when it came to Harry. The twins also believed Harry might have met up with Dan Granger. He might have done that to offer his condolences to the man but there could be more. For all they knew, Harry might have just decided to leave.
Right after the welcoming feast, Albus had gone to Privet drive. He was shocked to learn that Harry had left the house only a few days into the holidays. Albus wasn't sure how to find Harry now he didn't turn up at Hogwarts.
The moment Dan and Harry settled into a rented home in Hawaii, Dan began to look for a home to buy, Harry decided to find out what the magical community was like in that country. Harry found out that America does not have laws preventing underage witches and wizards from using magic. When he explained to Dan, the man told Harry that maybe he could use his magic to create papers that the muggles would never question. Dan had worked with one of his patients who helped him with some fake papers for Harry. Dan had used Hermione's birth certificate so the man could change that to a male child instead of female and the name was changed to Harrison Granger. Now Harry could use his magic to help create more papers, like schooling records so Dan could enrol him in normal school. Harry would learn magic on his own but he was going to go to a normal school and then eventually work in the normal world.
Harry was going to leave the Dursley's and not return to Hogwarts after his first year. He realised that being only twelve at the time, it would look to suspicious if he was seen alone. That was the only reason he returned to Hogwarts to do his second year. Being at Hogwarts meant he was away from the Dursley's. Now he had help from an adult, one that cared about how he had been treated by the Dursley's and about all the danger he had been in at Hogwarts. So Harry now had a father figure and one that cared for him. Harry finally thought he might get a decent life.
Time skip:
No one in the wizarding part of England ever found Harry Potter but there had been many changes. When the ministry found out Harry was missing, they began to investigate. Through the relative of the head of the DMLE, they found out about all the danger at Hogwarts and how Harry always seemed to get dragged into it. They also found out how Harry had been treated by Snape but also how certain students were allowed to get away with harassment and bullying.
Severus Snape ended up arrested for his verbal abuse of students. He was forced to take veritaserum at his trial. He was found guilty of not only verbal abuse but being behind the students who hurt or bullied other students, all his Slytherin students. Once they got that information, he was asked other questions about his life as a death eater.
Severus Snape was found guilty and sentenced to life in Azkaban.
Because it was Albus Dumbledore that spoke up for Snape, he lost his job as chief warlock, then headmaster. When Albus was questioned, with the use of veritaserum, it was found that he was the one to leave Harry with abusive people and he knew the Dursley's would not care for Harry. He wasn't jailed but he was basically told he would never hold any type of position again. It was during his trial that Minerva McGonagall spoke out against Albus, about how she told Albus that Harry Potter should not have been put with the Dursley's, but Albus refuse to listen. She also explained how he believed the children would grow stronger if they had to put up with being harassed, they could sort things out for themselves. Albus refuse to punish the students who harassed or bullied others.
Hogwarts became a very different school after Albus lost the job as headmaster. Hogwarts also made a lot of changes, which resulted in a better and safer school, especially when Minerva expelled dozens of students within weeks of taking the job as headmistress.
Harry grew up as a normal young man. He and Dan were so close that Harry actually called him dad. Harry went on to go to university, where he became a doctor. Dan stayed single. He did date but he always said he would never again marry. When Harry married, to another doctor he worked with, they had four children. Dan became a grandfather and loved his new family, who loved him.
The younger man and older man ended up with great lives and a wonderful family even if it came after the murder of Jean Granger.
As the years passed, neither man ever spoke about the Granger who threw away her family.
The end:
