"A fifth spirit?"
"That's who's been calling me. From Ahtohallan. The answers about the past are all there."
"So we go to Ahtohallan."
"Not we. Me."
"What?"
"The Dark Sea is too dangerous for us both."
"No. NO! We do this together. Remember the song? Go too far and you'll be drowned. Who will stop you from going too far?"
"You said you believed in me. That this was what I was born to do."
"And I don't want to stop you from that. I don't want to stop you from being whatever you need to be. I just don't want you dying trying to be everything for everyone else too. Don't do this alone. Let me help you, please. I can't lose you, Elsa."
"I can't lose you either, Anna. Come on."
"Wait, what? What are you doing? Elsa!"
"Anna, this might sound crazy, but I'm sensing some rising anger!"
"Well, I am angry, Olaf! She promised me we'd do this together!"
"Yeah, uh-huh. What I mean is, I'm sensing rising anger in me."
"Wait, you're angry?"
"Um, I think so. Elsa pushed me away too and didn't even say goodbye."
"And you have every right to be very, VERY mad at her."
She was grateful to be alone.
Her loved ones were worried about her. But she needed to decompress and think.
Thankfully, the males in her life understood and allowed her to beg off with some excuse. Her mind wasn't on her responsibilities and duties. It was hard for her to focus.
So, she found herself alone in her chambers, with the curtains drawn closed over the windows.
She felt like she was caught in a whirlwind ever since the entire sordid adventure began. No, she wasn't talking about Gale. Normally, she wasn't a maudlin sort of girl.
But she felt like her emotions were all over the place since the spirits woke up.
There was no time to process her emotions.
She was hopping from one danger to the next. It was all she could do to keep up as she felt like the fates were keeping her on her toes. She hit many low points throughout her journey. It was only now that she had the time to process everything that had happened.
It felt like everything was crashing over her.
Like a wave from a turbulent sea.
The same sea that killed her parents six years ago.
She didn't know how it happened either.
One moment, she was perfectly fine, taking a stroll on the palace grounds with her friends. Then, everything threatened to overwhelm her as one of them uttered an offhand remark that triggered her darker emotions. She tried to suppress them as best she could.
But all she could think about were the darker points in her recent journey.
As she stated before, there was no time to process being pushed away...again.
She and her companion had to escape from those earth giants. Then they found themselves in a dark and dirty cave. It didn't help that the man she loved disappeared for parts unknown. In the Enchanted Forest, she found herself at a crossroads.
Did she accompany her sister who was following a voice that only she could hear?
Or did she look around for her boyfriend.
It was a difficult choice to make. She felt like she was being torn in two. But she'd promised the rock trolls that she would look after her sister, to make sure that nothing happened to her. With a heavy heart, she left him behind and accompanied her sister.
Then came the dark moment that Gale led them to the ruins of a shipwreck.
The sisters were horrified to discover this was the ship their parents went on.
The journey itself was secretive in nature. She remembered questioning them about their reasons for their sudden expedition. But they were elusive and vague. They became secretive and evasive. They changed the subject everytime she brought it up.
She and her sister frantically searched the ship.
Until she found a cannister in a secret compartment.
They discovered their parents were searching for the source of her sister's powers. Their other traveling companion casually mentioned that water has memory. So, her sister used her powers to discover their parents' last moments alive.
"I want to know what happened to them."
"Ahtohallan has to be the source of her magic!"
"We keep going...for Elsa."
"The waves are too high!"
"Iduna!"
"Agnarr!"
At the time, she felt her sister's pain. She was always one to take responsibility for the actions of others. She knew her parents were responsible for their own choices.
Just as she told her sister.
And yet...
Her expression darkened. Their parents hugged each other as they fell to their deaths in a dark, churning sea. Their last thoughts were of each other and her sister.
She didn't even rate as an afterthought.
More memories returned to the forefront of her mind.
Even when they learned about the shipwreck, her sister remained in that room. At the time, she didn't know about her sister's powers. Her sister refused to leave her chambers.
So, she was left to bury them...alone.
Once again, she would have no time to reprocess her grief.
Her sister made that fateful decision to send her away.
She couldn't help feeling her sister manipulated her feelings, luring her into a false sense of complacency. Her sister wasn't one for hugging all that much and she should have known something was up when she initiated that embrace. She should have also felt suspicious when she urged Olaf to join them. Without warning, she and her companion were hurled away into an icy canoe. Their path was equally icy and they were carried away at a fast speed into unknown territory. They could have died because of her sister's decision to push her away.
Again.
Then, in that dark cave, her sister sent her images of the past.
She felt horrified as she learned about her grandfather Runeard, who killed the tribal leader of the Northuldra. Runeard was the one to start the conflict between Arendelle and the Northuldra by killing an innocent, unarmed man.
The dam was a trick, not a gift of peace.
Seeing that scene brought more horrific memories rushing back.
This reminded her of the time Prince Hans of the Southern Isles nearly struck her sister down. She, too, was lying oblivious on the ground, unarmed and helpless as Hans was about to strike her down with his sword.
She had to sacrifice herself by placing her body between Hans and her sister.
She remembered all too well the sensation of freezing to death.
Unfortunately, she had no time to process those memories as well. She was about to move on, when her companion noticed he wasn't feeling right. He admitted that something was wrong with her sister.
She sat down and hugged him close to her.
She could only watch helplessly as he slowly dissolved into particles of snow.
The last remnants of her childhood, her connection to her sister, was gone. It was when she was in that cave that she was at her lowest point. Her boyfriend was missing, her last link to her childhood was gone and her sister was most likely dead. It was also at that moment she knew what she had to do: she had to destroy the dam.
At the expense of her kingdom.
She had to risk her life to lure the earth giants to the dam.
With the help of her boyfriend and some Arendellian guards, she managed to survive after the earth giants hurled giant rocks at the dam, destroying it.
But she knew that Arendelle would be destroyed in the process.
She did the next right thing...at great cost.
"Is it really you?"
"Anna."
"I thought I'd lost you!"
"Lost me? You saved me. Again."
"I did?"
"And Anna. Arendelle did NOT fall."
"It didn't?"
"The spirits all agree. Arendelle deserves to stand...with you."
"Me?"
"You did what was right...for everyone."
"Did you find the Fifth Spirit?"
...
"You are the Fifth Spirit! You're the bridge!"
"Well actually, a bridge has two sides. And Mother had two daughters. We did this together. We'll continue to do this together."
"Together."
When she realized her sister was still alive, she felt great elation.
She felt so many emotions at once, she couldn't process them at the same time.
There was shock that her sister was alive. There was happiness and giddiness that she didn't lose her precious sister after all. There was elation that her sister managed to save Arendelle from the giant flood of water after the dam was destroyed.
The curse on the Enchanted Forest was lifted.
Her sister became the Fifth Spirit.
All she could do was cry and clumsily blow her nose throughout their conversation. Her sister found her place with the Enchanted Forest and the Northuldra.
She was shocked when she was given the crown after her sister abdicated.
Her boyfriend proposed and it seemed like everything was as right as rain.
But was it?
She didn't know anymore.
Now that she was looking back on her interactions with her sister, all she could remember was how angry she was. Her sister never apologized for pushing her away and sending her into danger by creating that icy canoe.
When she was bawling like a baby after their reunion, her sister was as placid as ever.
Still giving her that plastic smile.
There was no hint of human empathy whatsoever in the face of her tears.
She would be the first to admit that she made her fair share of mistakes. She left her boyfriend behind and could become clingy and annoying when it came to wanting to protect her sister. She knew that she went overboard in pursuit of her sister's safety.
And she was also aware that her sister suffered.
Growing up with such powers couldn't have been easy.
Her sister was afraid of hurting people and their parents spent the bulk of their time trying to help her control it. Unfortunately, they were so preoccupied with helping her sister that she fell by the wayside.
Was it any wonder that she spent the bulk of her childhood talking to portraits?
But she suffered too.
She had no idea why her sister was shutting doors in her face. No one would give her a proper answer and her parents were too busy ruling Arendelle to spend any time with her.
When she witnessed their last moments on the ship, it was heart wrenching.
Their thoughts were only on her sister, not her.
Then, her sister pushed her away AGAIN and refused to apologize for it. She remembered telling Olaf that he had every right to be angry with her sister. Well, she could relate.
She'd never felt so furious in her life.
Now that their adventure was over, she was dealing with delayed reaction.
Once again, her sister did her own thing with no regard for the consequences. She would later learn that her sister ventured far too deep into Ahtohallan itself and became frozen as a result. This only made her think about her mother's warning words from a childhood nursery rhyme.
"Dive down deep into her sound. But not too far or you'll be drowned..."
She remembered warning her sister about this very thing.
Instead, she recklessly charged into the heart of Ahtohallan before she was ready. While she became the Fifth Spirit, the earth giants had yet to be tamed at that point in time.
Not only did her sister push her away, she didn't respect her.
How could you respect someone you refuse to listen to?
Her sister claimed they were two parts of a bridge. Well, she couldn't help feeling the bridge was one-sided, the odds stacked in her sister's favor. Arendelle was their home.
But her sister felt she could swan off to the Enchanted Forest.
And give her a crown she wasn't sure she wanted in the first place.
Even though she knew her sister loved her, she couldn't help feeling abandoned. Her sister only visited once a week to play Charades. But it was clear her mind was elsewhere. She wanted to frolic among the Northuldra and the elemental spirits. She didn't want any earthly duties and obligations tying her down, such as ruling Arendelle.
Yes, it all worked out in the end.
But she didn't think that it would.
Before she reunited with her sister, she thought that Arendelle was destroyed. Olaf was gone and she felt like she'd lost everything. Doing the right thing sometimes came at too high a cost. Then, she was elated to see her precious sister wasn't lost after all.
But her sister never apologized.
Didn't seem to realize that she suffered her darkest moments, both in that damnable cave and after she had the earth giants destroy the dam.
Normally, she was a happy-go-lucky, forgiving young woman.
But she was as human as anyone else.
Now that she realized how angry she was, she felt like she couldn't breathe. No matter what she said or did, she couldn't get rid of her anger and bitterness. Part of her was still dealing with bitterness that came from years of estrangement and doors being shut in her face.
She had no idea what she was going to do next.
Her sister was due to visit soon for their weekly game of Charades.
Should she confront her sister?
And if she did, what would she say?
What would she do? How could she communicate how upset she was? How-
"Anna?" Her sister said, interrupting her cogitations. "Ready for Charades?"
