Episode 1

(The Princess leads Victoria into the Tardis console room for the first time. As they walk in, Victoria looks around in awe, at the huge white room inside the small blue box.)

PRINCESS: Well, what do you think? Do you like it?

VICTORIA: I… It's… I…can't believe it. It's so…

(The Doctor and Jamie enter.)

DOCTOR: Big?

VICTORIA: Well…yes.

(The Princess, Doctor and Jamie all smile, as Victoria looks around the spacious room.)

VICTORIA: Where are we?

PRINCESS: Some people call it the Tardis, which I quite like. I'm also quite fond of, 'Home.'

(Victoria finds her way to the console.)

VICTORIA: What are all these knobs?

DOCTOR: What, these?

(The Doctor flicks several switches as a demonstration.)

JAMIE: Instruments. These are for controlling our flight.

VICTORIA: (Amused) Flight?!

JAMIE: Well, yes. You see, we travel around in here through time and space.

(Victoria laughs.)

DOCTOR: Oh no, no, no, no. Don't laugh, it's true. Your father and Maxtible were working on the same concept, but I have perfected a rather special model.

PRINCESS: You perfected?

DOCTOR: Well… Oh, all right. I know how to use this model.

JAMIE: Oh, do you now?

DOCTOR: That's enough from you two.

(Jamie and the Princess grin to one another.)

VICTORIA: But how long have you been travelling?

PRINCESS: Oh, we started out when we were young, the Doctor and me.

VICTORIA: You seem young now.

PRINCESS: Aw, thank you! Well, not too long ago we underwent a renewal of sorts. That would have been…a year or two ago? Before that we'd been travelling for...at least a few decades.

VICTORIA: But that's impossible.

PRINCESS: Is it?

VICTORIA: Well, if what you say is true then you must be, eh…how old?

PRINCESS: Eh, let's see. In regard to your measurement of time, I would be…four hundred and…thirty years old? Give or take a year…or maybe a decade.

(Both Victoria and Jamie stare back at the Princess in complete bewilderment, and even some concern.)

PRINCESS: But the Doctor's older than me. He's probably four hundred and fifty something by now.

DOCTOR: Yes, thank you, Princess.

PRINCESS: Your welcome, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Now, perhaps you'd like to show Victoria the wardrobe. She might find her current attire a little impractical if she's going to join us in our adventures.

PRINCESS: All righty. Come along, Victoria, I'm sure we can find you something you'll like.

VICTORIA: All–All right.

(A nervous Victoria is lead away from the console by the Princess.)

VICTORIA: But…it doesn't have to be like what your wearing, does it?

PRINCESS: Of course not, you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

VICTORIA: Oh, good.

PRINCESS: Why, is there something wrong with what I'm wearing?

VICTORIA: No, no. It's…It's just not me.

PRINCESS: That's all right.

(The Princess and Victoria are about to go through the door, leading further into the Tardis, when…)

DOCTOR: (To Jamie) A smooth take off! What a nerve!

PRINCESS: Come on.

(The Princess hurries Victoria out of the room, before an argument can erupt between the Doctor and Jamie, as the Tardis begins to dematerialise, with its engines echoing all around.)

(The Princess is sat on the floor against the wall, going through her deck of cards, when Victoria emerges from the wardrobe, wearing a white dress with short sleeves which goes down to her knees. She doesn't look all that sure about it.)

VICTOIRA: Princess?

(The Princess looks up and smiles.)

PRINCESS: Aw, that looks lovely on you.

VICTORIA: Are you sure? It feels awfully short.

PRINCESS: Well, you could always try on some trousers if you like?

VICTORIA: My father wouldn't approve.

PRINCESS: You've never worn trousers?

VICTORIA: No. I've thought about it before. But it's not proper.

PRINCESS: Well, we take a very relaxed attitude around here.

(Victoria looks pointedly at the Princess in her tuxedo, top hat, knee high boots, fishnet stockings and very short and tight black skirt.)

VICTORIA: I noticed.

PRINCESS: Besides, it's about what you feel comfortable in. It also helps if you can run. Do you think you could run in that dress?

VICTORIA: Well…yes. But anything longer and it'd be a challenge.

PRINCESS: Sounds perfect then. Unless you want to try anything else on?

(Victoria thinks for a moment, looking down at her attire.)

VICTORIA: No. I'll stick with this.

PRINCESS: Good.

VICTORIA: What are you doing with those cards?

PRINCESS: Counting them. It feels like I've been missing one for the longest time.

(Suddenly the Princess shivers visibly.)

PRINCESS: Brrr. Is it me or did it just get cold in here?

VICTORIA: Is there a breeze? I didn't notice anything.

(The Princess puts away her cards and starts rubbing her arms as she stands up.)

PRINCESS: No, it's definitely cold. I'm going to need bigger jacket. Do you mind if we stop off at my room?

VICTORIA: Of course.

(The Princess and Victoria start walking through the corridors of the Tardis.)

PRINCESS: Do you really not feel that cold?

VICTORIA: No.

(Then suddenly the Princess comes to a stop.)

PRINCESS: That's strange.

VICTORIA: What is?

PRINCESS: The cold. It just disappeared.

VICTORIA: Might this be one of those premonitions? Jamie told me about them, they do sound rather strange.

PRINCESS: They are. And you may be right, Victoria.

(The Princess closes her eyes tightly, trying to focus.)

PRINCESS: I can almost… Come on…just… No. It's gone.

VICTORIA: Are you all right? That looked rather painful.

PRINCESS: No, I'm all right. It's just…for a long time these premonitions have been random, and I often don't retain anything from them. I'm trying to teach myself to hold on to them, but it's proving more difficult than I imagined.

VICTORIA: I see.

PRINCESS: And even when I do get a hold, I don't always get the full picture, like with the Daleks before. I've tried to force one a few times, but nothings ever come of it.

VICTORIA: It doesn't sound very safe, Princess.

PRINCESS: Sorry, I didn't mean to worry you, Victoria. But I'm being careful, promise. Why don't we get back to the console room? I'm sure the Doctor and Jamie will be missing us by now.

(The Princess merrily leads Victoria through the Tardis corridor, while a concerned frown creeps onto Victoria's face.)

(The Princess and Victoria enter the console room.)

DOCTOR: Ah, there you two are, we've just landed. And it's a little bit chilly by the looks of things.

VICTORIA: Chilly? You mean cold?

DOCTOR: Yes, I suppose you might say that.

VICTORIA: But that's what–

PRINCESS: Will we need coats?

DOCTOR: Oh, I shouldn't think so, not if we find shelter quick enough.

JAMIE: Right, let's go then.

VICTORIA: Hold on. We're just going to wonder around, are we? With no clue what's waiting for us out there?

DOCTOR: I prefer to call it exploring.

JAMIE: But wondering's not far off.

(The Doctor scowls at Jamie.)

PRINCESS: If you want to wait here, you're more than welcome to, Victoria.

VICTORIA: No, I'll come.

DOCTOR: Splendid.

(The Doctor activates the door controls, prompting the wall to open up and reveal a cold looking grey desert.)

JAMIE: Ah, another charming place you've taken us to.

(Jamie leads the way out, with the Doctor following. Victoria steps out cautiously, looking around in awe at their new surroundings. The Princess follows, locking the police box doors behind her.)

VICTORIA: We've…moved.

JAMIE: I told you it could fly.

DOCTOR: Jamie.

VICTORIA: But…where are we now?

DOCTOR: I've no idea.

PRINCESS: But hopefully it'll be nicer than Skaro.

JAMIE: Doesn't look like it, Princess. Seems like nothing but desert and rocks for miles.

PRINCESS: What about down there, between those two ridges?

DOCTOR: It's as good a place as any to investigate. Now, watch your step, Victoria.

(The Doctor takes Victoria's hand, assisting her as they head down in between the ridges. Jamie offers to aid the Princess, who accepts. But as they reach the bottom, where the ridges end, they are jumped by four men with guns. The tallest, with blonde hair and a stern expression speaks first – Hopper.)

HOPPER: Hold it right there, friend!

(As the time travellers look up, the Doctor quickly throws his hands up in the air, as Jamie pulls Victoria towards him and the Princess.)

DOCTOR: If you put it like that, I certainly will.

CALLUM: Did you hear that, Professor? English.

PRINCESS: Would you prefer a different language, like French, or Hindi?

DOCTOR: We mean you no harm.

PARRY: It's all right, Hopper. I'm willing to take them at their word.

(Hopper lowers his gun, as do the three others. The Doctor, relieved, lowers his arms.)

DOCTOR: Thank you.

(A bearded man steps towards them, from a small group of people further back. He's around forty or fifty, with thinning hair – Parry.)

PARRY: Who are you and where do you come from?

HOPPER: And you'd better have a good story.

JAMIE: Maybe you'll not get one.

HOPPER: Listen, fella, we're not playing games.

ROGERS: You'd better listen to him.

(But the Princess hasn't been listening. Instead, she's been looking past the group and to a body that is sprawled out on the ground. Near what appears to be an entrance to an underground tomb of sorts.)

PRINCESS: Doctor.

DOCTOR: Yes, I see it. Now, tell me, what's been happening over here?

(The Doctor makes his way past everyone, ignoring the weapons that are pointed at him once more. The Princess follows, with Jamie bringing Victoria after them. The Doctor goes to the body, while the Princess stands over him, and everyone else gathers around the entrance. From the group, a bolding man steps forward – Klieg.)

KLIEG: He was killed the moment you made your appearance.

DOCTOR: Ah, and you think we did it? Oh, no. I can assure you that we had nothing to do with the death of this man.

(The Doctor crouches down to examine the body.)

DOCTOR: He appears to have been electrocuted.

PRINCESS: Was he trying to open these doors here?

ROGERS: They seem to know all the answers.

PRINCESS: Does that mean I'm right?

HOPPER: A bunch of wise guys if you ask me.

(Another bolding man, who's shorter and more nervous – Viner – steps over to Parry.)

VINER: I think these four must be the members of a rival expedition.

DOCTOR: Expedition?

PARRY: We've tried to keep it a secret. Unsuccessfully now it appears.

VINER: Look at them. Archaeologist written all over them.

PRINCESS: How dare you?! We're not archaeologist.

VINER: Then what are you?

PRINCESS: We're explorers. Much better than archaeologists.

VINER: There, you see? It's impossible to keep a secret in the scientific world.

VICTORIA: Doctor, what's going on?

JAMIE: Aye, I'd quite like to know that too.

DOCTOR: Well, perhaps if we stand here long enough, one of them might explain to us what the purpose of their expedition is?

(The members of the party look between one another for a moment.)

PARRY: We're searching the universe for the last remains of the Cybermen.

(The Doctor, Princess and Jamie all stare in concern and horror.)

JAMIE: Cybermen? You mean to say they came from here?

PARRY: But of course. Telos was their home.

PRINCESS: No, it wasn't.

PARRY: Excuse me.

PRINCESS: They came from Mondas, not Telos.

VINER: Mondas is just a myth, everyone knows that.

KLIEG: Yes, following the historical records, this is the point from which the Cybermen spread out across the universe.

PRINCESS: But that's impossible. Isn't it, Doctor?

DOCTOR: (To Parry) Are you saying this is the first world the Cybermen appeared on?

PARRY: As far as we can ascertain, yes.

VINER: We know they died out many centuries ago. What we don't know is why they died out.

DOCTOR: Didn't you defeat them?

VINER: Well, yes, we were on the verge of doing so. But then they just vanished. From this and every other world under their control.

HOPPER: Callum, Rogers, get him back to the rocket. I'll be with you in a minute.

CALLUM: Okay.

(Callum and Rogers – both young lads – pick up the dead body and carry it away.)

HOPPER: Well, that's that. Are you coming back to the rocket with me, Professor?

PARRY: What for?

HOPPER: You're not going on with this, are you? Look I don't know if these people have anything to do with it or not–

PRINCESS: We didn't.

HOPPER: (Continuing) But one of my men has just been killed. You're not paying that kind of money.

PARRY: Yes, I suppose that's quite true.

HOPPER: Yeah, you think it over. Come on, let's go. We'll wait for you back at the ship.

(Hopper and his men proceed down the hill towards a rocket ship not too far away.)

DOCTOR: The problem, I take it, is to open these doors, right?

KLIEG: Ha, brilliant!

PARRY: That is the problem.

KLIEG: And we would prefer it if you returned to wherever you came from.

JAMIE: Oh, not very friendly, are they?

VICTORIA: Oh, yes, might we leave this horrible place?

DOCTOR: I'm afraid that that became impossible the moment that name was mentioned.

VICTORIA: What name?

DOCTOR: Cybermen.

VICTORIA: Cybermen? What are they?

JAMIE: They're no friendly, I'll tell you that. Here, do remember all the trouble we went through back on the moon?

VICTORIA: The moon?

PRINCESS: They tried to kill us all. Although, in hindsight that does sound better than turning us into Cybermen. Which was what they planned to do the first time we met them.

DOCTOR: Which is why we must stay.

JAMIE: Oh, Doctor!

VICTORIA: Must we? I don't like the sound of these things at all.

PRINCESS: Don't worry, Victoria. We won't let anything happen to you.

DOCTOR: (To Parry) We shall stay and help you with your search.

KLIEG: Perhaps we don't want your help.

DOCTOR: That's just it, you so obviously do. Now I'm sure we can agree, if we can open those doors for you–

KLIEG: This is our problem! And I suggest you take this ridiculous expedition of yours off this planet.

JAMIE: It seems to me that we've got as much right here as you have.

PARRY: Of course you have. Mister Klieg, must I remind you again that you do not speak for this expedition? I am its leader, you and Miss Kaftan are only here on sufferance.

KLIEG: Thank you. And whose money is paying for the hire of that rocket?!

(A woman with tied back black hair steps forward alongside Klieg – Kaftan.)

KAFTAN: Mine!

PARRY: I thought I made it quite clear that your financial support did not entitle you to a say in the running of this expedition.

KAFTAN: Of course it was quite clear. Was it not, Eric?

KLIEG: Of course. No one questions your leadership.

PRINCESS: So can I open these doors then?

(Everyone turns, seeing the Princess at the sealed doors to the tomb. She goes to place her hands on the large handles.)

ALL: No!

(The Princess lays her hands on the handles and attempts to pull the door open. Everyone else stares in shock, amazed that the Princess hasn't befallen the same fate as the last man to touch the doors – the one Hopper and his men just took away. After trying for a moment to open the doors and not getting anywhere, the Princess gives up and turns back around to the shocked expressions.)

PRINCESS: What?

KLIEG: How are you not dead?

PRINCESS: Don't know. Luck?

VINER: Why wasn't she shocked like the first man?

PRINCESS: Oh. Well, it's drained.

VINER: What?

(The Doctor steps forward, pulling out a small device. He places it on the handle of the doors, before checking the readout. He then removes it, sticking it back in his pocket.)

DOCTOR: Would you like some help, Princess?

PRINCESS: Yes, please.

DOCTOR: Right. Jamie.

JAMIE: Aye.

(The Princess and Jamie take a handle each and attempt to pull the doors open together. But still, the doors don't budge.)

DOCTOR: Come on, Jamie, put your back into it.

JAMIE: Aye, well…I've not had much exercise lately.

PRINCESS: What are you talking about? You just did a whole series of tests for the Daleks yesterday.

(As the Princess and Jamie give up, the Doctor walks over to a tall brooding man stood alongside Kaftan – Toberman.)

DOCTOR: I think here is a gentleman who can open these doors for us.

KAFTAN: He is my servant. I will not have him risk his life.

PARRY: Surely it was for just such a contingency as this that you insisted we bring him with us?

DOCTOR: Oh, there's no danger now. Unless of course he's afraid.

(Toberman advances towards the Doctor.)

DOCTOR: Oh, no, no, he's not afraid.

(The Princess steps in between the nervous Doctor and the looming Toberman.)

PRINCESS: Hello, what's your name?

TOBERMAN: Toberman.

PRINCESS: Really? Wow! I wish I had a name like that. Most people just call me the Princess, including my mother. But she's not here, so no need to worry about her. Would you mind helping us with these doors, Toberman? Please?

(Toberman seems tempted to do so, going as far as to take a step towards the doors. But he then halts, looking back to an irritated Kaftan. But seeing all eyes her, Kaftan nods. Toberman than continues on to the doors.)

PRINCESS: Thank you.

(Everyone stands back, as Toberman tightly grips one of the handles. Then, using his strength, the huge man begins to drag the door open, fighting against centuries old worn mechanisms, dirt and stone. But he does it, and even goes on to open the second door, as everyone else gathers round to peer inside, at the gleaming chamber within.)

PARRY: Come on.

DOCTOR: No, wait! Wait. I would be very careful in there if I were you.

(The last member of the party steps forward, a younger archaeologist with thick black hair – Haydon.)

HAYDON: But why wasn't Toberman killed – Why weren't you or your friends killed?

DOCTOR: Weren't you listening to the Princess said. The poor fellow who died drained all the electricity from the trap when he first touched the doors. There was nothing left after that.

KAFTAN: But how could she have known that?

PRINCESS: I have great intuition.

KLIEG: All this pointless chatter. We're wasting time.

(Klieg is about to force his way through, before locking eyes with Parry.)

KLIEG: Of course. After you, Professor.

(Parry leads the party inside, while the time travellers remain outside.)

DOCTOR: But I'd still be very careful if I were you! Very careful indeed! Come on, let's go and join them.

(Not looking, the Doctor takes the first hand he can and walks in…only to realise its Jamie's moments later. The two quickly let go and turn back to a nervous Victoria who's stood alongside the Princess.)

PRINCESS: Everything all right, Victoria?

VICTORIA: Yes.

(Even so, Victoria remains still, as she stares anxiously into the tomb. The Doctor and Jamie come back out to join them.)

DOCTOR: You look very nice in that dress, Victoria.

VICTORIA: Thank you. Don't you think it's a bit–

DOCTOR: A bit short? Oh, I shouldn't worry about that. Look at Jamie's.

JAMIE: Hey, I'll have you know that– (Realising) Oh, aye! And what about the Princess'?

PRINCESS: Hey, watch it mister.

(Jamie backs off.)

PRINCESS: Would you like to go inside, Victoria?

VICTORIA: Is it safe?

DOCTOR: I doubt it. But we'll be careful, won't we?

VICTORIA: Have you had any premonitions, Princess?

PRINCESS: No.

VICTORIA: Can you try? I just…

JAMIE: Hey, it's all right to be scared.

VICTORIA: I'm not scared.

DOCTOR: You can always wait in the Tardis if–

VICTORIA: For the last time, I am not scared. It's just a lot to take in, that's all. But I'm all right now. Shall we go in?

DOCTOR: If you like.

JAMIE: And you're sure you're all right?

VICTORIA: Perfectly, thank you.

(The Doctor and Jamie look to each, shrug, then walk into the tomb.)

PRINCESS: Well done.

(Victoria manages a smile.)

VICTORIA: We will be all right though, won't we?

PRINCESS: Of course.

VICTORIA: So you have had a premonition?

PRINCESS: No. I just trust you to watch out for me. And I'll watch out for you. So, coming?

(The Princess offers Victoria her hand. Victoria hesitates for a moment, but then takes the Princess' hand with a smile. The two then enter the spacious chamber, with Cybermen heads printed all over the place. There's also a long control panel running along one wall and opposite it is a small staircase which leads to a heavy metal hatch. And there's a round table with enough chairs for all of them. All around the room, the expedition party are examining various parts of the chamber.)

VICTORIA: Mercy, just look at this place.

PRINCESS: I know. I'm surprised the Cybermen have a table too, not to mention chairs.

(Over at the control panel, Parry, Viner and Haydon are examining it closely.)

PARRY: These controls are of their earlier dynasty.

HAYDON: Not so very early as all that by the look of it. Look, John–

VINER: Yes, I'm quite capable of making my own deductions, thank you.

HAYDON: All right.

(The Doctor has pulled out a magnifying glass and is examining the walls.)

JAMIE: Did you ever seen the like of it Doctor?

DOCTOR: Not exactly, Jamie, but very nearly.

(Parry steps up onto the short staircase by the hatch, catching everyone's attention.)

PARRY: Now that we're all here, I think we'd better take stock of the situation. This appears to be a dead end. The only way out appears to be through that hatch.

KAFTAN: Are there no doors?

PARRY: No, apart from the entrance.

PRINCESS: Oh.

PARRY: Something the matter?

PRINCESS: Well…I don't want to embarrass anyone.

PARRY: No, if you've seen something we've missed, then please.

PRINCESS: Well, there are two other doors.

VINER: Two other doors?

DOCTOR: Oh, yes. (Pointing to opposite ends of the room) One in that section, and one in that section over there. Activated, I imagine, by this simple logical system over here. Here we are, I think.

(The Doctor makes his way over to the middle of the control panel. Then, using the controls to his immediate left, he pulls the first switch, the second switch, and then the first lever. The result is the door on the right side of the room opens up.)

DOCTOR: Yes, splendid, splendid! A simple logical gate.

(The Doctor then operates the controls to his immediate right, mirroring what he did before. This time, the door on the left opens up.)

KLIEG: Doctor, you and this Princess seem to be very familiar with this place.

DOCTOR: Oh no, not really. It's all based upon symbolic logic, the same as you use in computers. The opening mechanism for this door, an OR gate, you call it.

KLIEG: Yes, yes, I can see that, but how did you know in the first place?

DOCTOR: Oh, we use our own special technique.

KLIEG: Oh really, Doctor? And may we know what that is?

DOCTOR: Keeping our eyes open and our mouths shut.

(Haydon chuckles loudly as Klieg scowls.)

PARRY: We're far too many to explore together. I think we'd better divide up. If you, Mr Viner, would take that door with…

(Parry looks to Jamie.)

JAMIE: Jamie.

PARRY: Jamie and Mr Haydon. Mr Klieg, the Doctor and myself will make up the other party.

(As everyone gets into their groups, the Princess, Victoria, Kaftan and Toberman form a group of their own.)

VICTORIA: Well, what about us?

PARRY: I think the women had better remain here.

VICTORIA: Rubbish. We can make a party.

PRINCESS: That's the spirit!

KAFTAN: Certainly. With Toberman to guard us we need fear no one.

PRINCESS: Oh, are you coming with us, Toberman? That's wonderful!

(Toberman blushes.)

PARRY: Right. Mr Klieg, will you take them along with you?

KLIEG: I prefer to stay here.

PARRY: As you wish. Mr Viner, will you go along with the women?

PRINCESS: And Toberman.

PARRY: Yes, and Toberman.

VINER: Very well.

PARRY: But get back to the spacecraft by sixteen thirty. You all know the temperature drop at night, so we'll meet back here at sixteen twenty-five. If anyone is missing–

PRINCESS: Or trapped.

PARRY: …Yes. That'll give us an hour to look for them before we have to leave.

VINER: Come on, then. we might as well try that opening over there.

(Kaftan aggressively grabs the Princess' and Victoria's hands.)

KAFTAN: We'd better keep close together.

VICTORIA: Yes, but I don't think we all need to be this close, thank you.

(Victoria pulls her hand from the Kaftan's.)

PRINCESS: Victoria's right.

(The Princess pulls her hand from Kaftan's. Kaftan is irritated, but puts on a smile. Viner then leads the way through the left door, with Kaftan, Victoria, the Princess and Toberman following.)

(Viner leads Kaftan, the Princess and Victoria into a small room, with a large machine in the centre. At the top of the machine is a series of dishes, which point towards an open metal container with a large humanoid share cut out inside. On the other side of the room is a control panel.)

VINER: Come on. Right in.

(As they enter, the Princess looks around, confused.)

PRINCESS: Where'd Toberman go?

VICTORIA: He was right behind us.

KAFTAN: I sent him to join the others. (Turns to Viner) We do not need any other protection now that Mr Viner is with us.

(The Princess and Victoria look to each other with amused scepticism.)

VINER: Yes, well, shall we commence? Everything must be carefully measured and recorded.

VICTORIA: What is this room?

VINER: I don't know. Possibly this is where the Cybermen are made.

PRINCESS: I doubt it. It takes a lot of pain and suffering to make a Cyberman. This place doesn't have that feeling about it.

VINER: Well, this isn't about what you feel. It's about logical deductions.

(The Princess screws up her noise, doing a silent impression of Viner when he's not looking.)

VICTORIA: I wonder what this is?

(Victoria is stood by the large machine, looking at it. She begins to walk around, but crosses Viner's path as she does.)

VINER: (To Victoria) Do you mind? You're getting in my way. Just go over there, will you?

VICTORIA: Oh, fiddle!

(Victoria goes over to look at the huge metal container.)

KAFTAN: Could this not be the purpose of the room?

VINER: Yes?

(Kaftan points to the container Victoria is stood by.)

KAFTAN: A Cyberman would stand in that form and be…well, revitalised?

VINER: Yes, that's reasonable.

(Viner looks up at the machine aimed at the container.)

VINER: These projectors were probably made to fire in neuro-electric potential. Yes, that's it, I think you're right.

VICTORIA: But this space in here is so big. The Cybermen would have had to have been giants.

PRINCESS: They certainly were tall. Even taller than me with my top hat on.

VICTORIA: Really?

PRINCESS: Uh huh. Watch.

(The Princess climbs into the container as if she were to use it, and there's still plenty of space – even with her top hat on.)

PRINCESS: See!

(The Princess and Victoria giggle.)

VINER: Will you please be careful! The first rule of archaeological work is that nothing must be touched until it's been described and recorded.

PRINCESS: And now you know why I'm an explorer and not an archaeologist. Explorers actually get to interact with things.

(Victoria tries her best not to laugh at the Princess' remark, before the container door is suddenly shut, sealing the Princess inside. Victoria screams in fright.)

VICTORIA: Princess!

VINER: I warned her not to mess around!

VICTORIA: Never mind that, get her out of there!

VINER: How should I…

(Viner looks around frantically, before spotting Kaftan by the control panel.)

VINER: (To Kaftan) Did you touch anything?

KAFTAN: No!

VINER: Well, keep away from that board. Here, help us.

KAFTAN: One moment.

VICTORIA: He said level those alone!

(Kaftan reluctantly leaves the control panel and comes over to join Viner and Victoria at the container.)

VICTORIA: We must try together to open it.

(The three try, but struggle to get a grip, and even then the lid won't budge.)

VINER: It's no good. We'll need a crowbar to get this off.

KAFTAN: It may already be too late.

VICTORIA: Don't say that!

(A knock from the lid. The three look to it in surprise. Another knock, as if it were someone at the door.)

VICTORIA: Princess!

KAFTAN: She's still alive!

VINER: Thank heavens. Look, I'd better go and get the others. You two stay here with her.

KAFTAN: Yes, but hurry.

VINER: I won't be long.

(Viner hurries out of the room.)

KAFTAN: (To Victoria) Try knocking, it'll reassure her that we're here.

VICTORIA: All right.

(Victoria knocks on the lid. The Princess responds with a series of knocks.)

VICTORIA: Do you think she's trying to communicate with us?

KAFTAN: I've no idea.

VICTORIA: Hold on, Princess! We're getting help!

(The Princess only repeats the same series of knocks again.)

VICTORIA: It's no good, she can't hear me.

(Unbeknownst to Victoria, Kaftan has snuck back over to the control panel and is preparing to use it. She is just about to pull a lever when the Doctor grabs her wrist.)

DOCTOR: I wouldn't touch the projector controls if I were you. Someone might get hurt.

VICTORIA: Doctor, thank goodness. The Princess–

(Viner hurries in.)

DOCTOR: I know, Viner told me.

VINER: There must be some way to release it, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Yes, there is. Now let me see.

(Again, the Princess knocks the same rhythm on the lid of the container.)

VICTORIA: She's trying to tell us something, Doctor, but we don't know what?

DOCTOR: Hold on.

(The Doctor listens to the series of knocks again, mentally working out what is being communicated.)

DOCTOR: Ah! Well done, Princess.

KAFTAN: What has she done.

DOCTOR: Stand back a moment would you.

(The Doctor moves Kaftan back from the control panel. He then pushes up the lever on the far left, which opens the lid of the container.)

VICTORIA: Doctor, it worked!

(The Princess falls out of the container, gasping for air as Victoria catches her. The Doctor and Viner quickly run around, as the Doctor helps Victoria hold the Princess up.)

DOCTOR: Princess, are you all right?

PRINCESS: (Breathless) Y…Yes…

DOCTOR: Hold on. Catch your breath.

(As the Princess does so, she noticed Victoria's worried expression.)

PRINCESS: Don't worry, Victoria… Just a little musky in there, that's all…

VINER: Well, let that be a lesson to you.

PRINCESS: Nonsense, I was perfectly safe. Had the whole thing completely under control. I was just about to make my disappearing act as well.

VICTORIA: Please, don't joke, Princess.

PRINCESS: Sorry. But I really am all right. See?

(The Princess stands up for herself to show Victoria. Victoria manages a small smile.)

DOCTOR: Well, if you're all right, we really should go and check up on Jamie.

VICTORIA: Why?

DOCTOR: I've just got a terrible feeling that he's in danger, that's all.

PRINCESS: Are you getting premonitions now too?

(The Doctor doesn't respond, and only leads the way out with the Princess, Victoria and Mr Viner behind him.)

(A short while later, the Doctor leads the way into another small room. This one only has a control panel directly opposite the door, and is otherwise rectangular in shape. At the moment, there is a spiralling pattern being projected onto the wall, which Haydon is slowly stepping towards, despite shielding his eyes. Jamie is stood by the control panel also shielding his eyes. Behind the Doctor, the Princess, Victoria and Viner enter.)

DOCTOR: Oh Jamie, don't touch those controls!

JAMIE: I already have. What's the matter Doctor?

(The Doctor races over to join Jamie by the control panel.)

PRINCESS: Victoria, don't look at the spirals.

VICTORIA: But–

PRINCESS: Cover your eyes.

(The Princess turns her back on the hypnotic spirals and covers Victoria's eyes with her own hand.)

DOCTOR: (To Jamie) Well, which one was it?

JAMIE: Which one what?

VINER: Look out!

(Everyone looks, as Cyberman has appeared before Haydon. A weapon is fired. Smoke rises from Haydon, as he collapses to the floor, having been shot. Victoria screams, the Princess holds her, as everyone steps back in shock and horror. The Cyberman stands before them all, weapon in hand…)
