Kairi looked around to see someone wearing a tengu mask, which from what she remembers when she had been reading Japanese mythology and lore it's a half predator bird, monkey and human.
He was wearing a blue hoari that had clouds on it, the tengu mask was red and he had a scarf over his head.
"You can't kill it with that." the older man said to them both,
Kairi looked down at it, not showing her emotions to the older man. Then back at the older man, blinking her eyes at him.
The Tengu man just stared at the two teens, he then turned his head towards her and his hand came to her chin and tilted her head up gently as he forced her to actually look at him…
…
Hours earlier.
Sakonji opened a letter that was delivered to him, it was from Giyu Tomika.
Greetings, Lord Urokodaki Sakonji.
I have sent a boy and a girl your way who says they want to become a demon slayer swordsman and swordswoman.
Both had the courage to face me unharmed. A demon slaughtered his family…transformed his surviving sister into a demon but she chooses not to attack humans.
I sense something in these three that is different from the others, especially the girl, I sense she has been through something and is used to keeping herself bottled up. The strange thing about her…is that she has black hair, but her fringe and tips are flame-like color and her eyes are a sky blue color with red around her pupils.
Like you, the boy has a strong sense of smell while the girl, I believe she can see people and demon's auras.
I believe that perhaps….both of them could be worthy of carrying on your traditions. Please, train them. I know this is a selfish request, so please forgive me."
So he had run to hunt down these young children and found them facing a demon, he smelt them.
'Damn…these two kids…The boy is no good. His kindness prevents him from taking decisive action. When facing a demon he still reeks of sympathy and consideration.'
He looked at the girl, 'she is just as bad. She reeks of pain and suffering….someone has hurt this child more than once. But yet she still is taking an indecisive action because of her sympathy and kindness. She also reeks of great loss, someone must've passed recently. Also… why is this child so small and skinny? Giyu…these kids are useless.'
Then the girl began to shake, it wasn't from fear, even though she reeks from it. But it…was as if something was wrong with her body nerves or her muscles.
….
Kairi could only stare at the tengu man, was this the man that Tomika-san was talking about? She senses his aura to find it a slight dark blue, which usually means the man would always do what he has to do in order to survive, but that he can be kind.
She turns to look back at the demon. Then suddenly the sun came up, she looked out to see it rising. She could only watch the demon in horror as the demon began to smoke, burns going over its face and turned into ashes and dust.
'Just a touch of the sun did that?' she thought to herself, 'no wonder why Nezuko-kun is so afraid of the sun!'
Kairi and Tanjiro then noticed she wasn't with them, so they ran into the temple to find her back in her basket with the blanket over her head.
Kairi smiled, she walked to Nezuko and patted her head, which made her make some sounds behind her bamboo muzzle.
Then she and Tanjiro saw the man burying the demon's victims bodies.
They went to join him, "um…"
"I am Urokodaki Sakonji." The tengu man said, "You two must be the ones that Giyu told me about."
"Y-yes. I'm Kamado Tanjiro. My sister is NEzuko."
HE then looked at Kairi, which was enough to make her feel nervous, she just had the sense that this isn't a man she should cross.
"I-I'm….Redfield Kairi."
He took a stand of Kairi's hair that was hanging down the side of her face and he studied the tip of her hair then he let it fall.
"What will you do when your sister eats someone?" Sakonji asked them.
Neither of them answered, mainly Kairi wasn't sure what she would do. The next minute both of them were slapped.
"Both of you think too slow." said Sakonji firmly. "You two struggled over the simplest decisions. You could never finish off a demon before the morning light."
None of them could say anything, but Kairi reckoned it wasn't worth it to bring up what she had faced was completely different in other worlds.
"Why couldn't you answer that question immediately? You two are too soft!"
She ain't that soft.
She can't afford to be until she can feel safe and she never will be as long as the wizarding world is obsessed with wanting to control her and make her their slave.
"When your sister eats someone, there are two things you have to do. Kill your sister then slit both of your own belly and die!"
Kairi's stomach did a flip up as soon as he said it, it caused a tiny bit of pain to her abdomen.
"That is what it means to travel with your sister who has become a demon. But it is your sacred duty to ensure that never happens. Your sister must never take the life…of an innocent person! Do both of you understand what I'm saying?" Sakonji ranted at them.
"Yes!" Tanjiro said to him.
Sakonji looked at KAiri, who could almost see the strict look on his face behind that tengu mask, she didn't say anything (doesn't help she was starting to feel ill.) so she settled for a small nod.
"Very well….I will test you both to see if you have what it takes."
Then he looked at Tanjiro, "Shoulder your sister and both of you follow me."
Sakonji turned around and ran, the two teens struggled to catch up with him since he was running so fast.
Kairi usually always listens to people's feet if someone is going to approach her, it's something she has always done since one haunted winter when she had been sneaked up on. But Sakonji's feet were soundless, no wonder why she didn't hear them approach them.
He's really fast too, so Kairi wondered how old he really was.
But Kairi just focused on running, trying to control her breathing. Eventually they were in front of a sack house. Kairi slowly sat down on her knees, trying to take some deep breaths.
"So…did we…pass the test?" Tanjiro asked as he panted hard
"The test begins now. Climb the mountain."
Kairi looked at him as if he was crazy, but it didn't surprise her. This is the crap that Shifu would've pulled off with her and Po.
Soon enough they were going up the mountain, she was already so exhausted, her legs hurt like hell, she was getting weaker. She just hope that her glamuor was still up that she spelt onto herself after that dose of the torture curse.
Eventually Sakonji stopped walking and he turned around to face the two teens.
"Now you must descend to the house at the foot of the mountain." he told them both. "This time, I will not wait until sunrise"
Then with that, he was gone, running ahead a lot faster than before.
Kairi blinked but ran down the hill with Tanjiro beside her. As long as Tanjiro is with her, the fog won't bother her so much.
They ran through the first, but then Tanjiro tripped over rope, so Kairi jumped back and dogue as rocks were being thrown to them.
They doge the rocks and keep running until the ground collapses under them and both of the teens end up in a hole.
Traps? Why…? Was it for hunting or for the demons? Was this the challenge? Get back down by sunrise without going into traps? Most likely.
Kairi then noticed her hand was on rope, she looked around and groaned as something very hard hit her in the back., knocking the air out of her. She struggled to breathe again as she gasped in painful breaths.
You need to control your breathing, Kai.' she thought to herself, 'you can worry about being sick later, not now with all these traps. Just stay with Tanjiro and you'll be fine. You need to be strong and control your breathing.'
Both of them started to run again, they were hit quite a few times, but it was only Kairi's stubbornness and her old survival instincts that kept her going without passing out.
They eventually got back down just before sunrise and Sakonji looked at them for a long time and finally said, "Kamado Tanjiro and Redfield Kairi, I accept you two as my students."
Then everything went dark for Kairi as she lost conicus, falling to countless nightmares that she had been through in life.
….
Sakonji watched as the girl, Kairi, collapsed. He ran and caught the young girl before she could hurt her head on the floor boards.
She was a lot paler and there were multiple bruises covering her face, some were old and healing and the others were new (no doubt from the traps) there were a few cuts on her face. He knew the girl was small and had wondered why she was so small for her age, now he knew why she was so small because she was very light.
'When did this girl eat a decent meal last?' he couldn't help but think.
Her entire body was shaking badly and small whimpers left her mouth.
What has this child been through?
He placed a hand on her forehead, he hoped for the better but unfortunately the girl had a high fever and she had said nothing.
Does this girl have no care for her wellbeing? How did she become in such a state?
Something had happened to this girl to the point she keeps things to herself.
He picked her up, put her in his room where his futon was laying, and laid her down gently. He took off her strange shirt that had a zip on it. He took it off her.
Sakonji then rolled her sleeves up so the cold air would get into the girl's arms, but he palen as he saw her arms….he picked her arm up and looked at the burns (both old and new) that covered her arms, they looked like they were done on purpose.
He doubts that the girl would do this to herself, so who would dare to hurt a child that is pure like Kairi and Tanjiro?
"Kairi-obaa san…." Tanjiro said, his eyes widening at her arms. "Does she need a Isha?"
Sakonji nodded at his question, "she's hurt, fevered and severely malnourished. It's a miracle that she's still alive."
Sakonji got a letter and wrote to his doctor that usually comes around to check on any student he takes on. He sent it with the crow and he went back in the room to see the girl trembling and muttering in her sleep and her face unsettled.
"I think she's having a nightmare. I can't get her to wake up." Tanjiro said to him.
"It's her fever," he said.
Sakonji then left and came back, carrying a bowl of cold water and a cloth. He knelt down and began to jab the cold and wet cloth across the child's forehead.
The doctor came the following day (Sakonji decided to hold off their training until the girl was back to health) he looked over her injuries, then listened to her chest, he looked very solemn when he was checking her stomach.
Sajonji glared at the scars that covered the girl's skin, he just hoped the rest of her body wasn't like her arms and stomach.
He watched as the girl let out a cry of pain when the doctor pushed on the right side of her stomach where an ugly scar was. He held her down by her shoulders when she tried to lunge out at the doctor, probably thinking it was an assault.
"Kairi obaasan." Tanjiro said as he took her hand. "It's an isha, he's helping you."
It seemed to do the trick, she was calmer and relaxing now. But her face still showed that she was living a horrible nightmare in her sleep.
"Tanjiro is right, Kairi." he said, gently but firmly. "You have nothing to fear."
The doctor rolled her onto her side and Sakonji palen as he saw her back.
There was a crisscross of scars literally all over her back as if someone took a whip or a belt to it multiple times and it looked like they were sadistic about it too, most likely an abuser or someone that was so sick that they enjoyed doing it.
If Giyu was right about the girl's father….he wondered how he would react if not only finding out he has a daughter, but also to find out that his daughter had literally been tortured.
Did a demon do this to the girl? Most likely not, otherwise the girl wouldn't have hesitated with killing that one from last night.
So it ... .did it mean that a human did this? Someone who should have cared and loved the child but only to cause her harm and pain as enjoyment?
Sakonji placed his hand to the girl's head and pushed her wet fringe from her face. This girl had a way of getting into your heart without even trying.
He wondered what she would be like if her father had been the one to raise her?
But he can't wonder that, all he can do is help her back to health.
The doctor then covered her up, but he also forced her to take some medicine that will help her fever.
"She just needs some rest and she will be okay."
Sakonji nodded, feeling relief that young Kairi will be alright eventually. But he will be speaking to her very firmly about looking after herself, she can't let herself fall ill like this.
What if she collapses when she's fighting a demon? It could cost her life.
It's foolish.
But he can't be too angry with the girl. It was obviously whoever had mistreated her, they had kept sure that she would never say if she felt unwell or if she was injured.
He saw her body shaking again, she kept doing that. It's only a few minutes then it goes off again. The doctor took her hand and watched how she was shaking and cursed.
"She's been under the cruciatus curse, probably for a long time." the doctor said to him. "I have a potion she will need to take for a few weeks and then the shakes should stop."
Sakonji was shocked that the girl had followed him under the effects of the torture curse without as much as passing out, the girl should've collapsed hours ago but yet she still held on.
He took the bottle from the doctor, who left. Tanjiro sat next to Kairi with a sad expression on his face.
"What's the cruciatus curse?" Tanjiro asked him.
"The torture curse, it is one of the worse curses from the wizarding world. It feels like a thousand knives are going into your body without killing you." he explained. "I have not experienced this myself, but it's what I've been told. The wizarding world is a corrupted place that is full of greed for power. It is the reason why no wizard or witch has ever become a demon slayer. They're full of arrogance, they only care for their own power and most think they are better than anyone who isn't from a magical family or has no magic at all."
Sakonji looked down at Kairi, who had done this to a child? Why would the wizarding world do this?
IT took the girl three days to wake up, there was a soft groan and Sakonji went and sat on his knees while he waited for her to open her eyes.
"Kairi obaasan?" Tanjiro asked, concerned.
"Tan-ji-ro…." she said in a weak voice.
"Y-yeah." he said, smiling at her sadly.
Sakonji placed a hand on the young girl's shoulder and she looked at him, she blinked at him in surprise.
Did…she expected him not to help her?
"You've been quite ill, young Kairi." he said.
A slight blush came to her cheeks, she looked away from him, so he took her chin gently and turned her face so she's looking at him.
"How long have you been hurt and sick like this?" he asked.
Kairi blinked at him then sighed. "Since I got here."
"That was days ago, Kairi obaa-san."
That girl was ill and injured for days. And she still went through his tests without complaining. She isn't a typical teen, that was for sure.
She really does need to learn that it's okay to cry, to run away, to ask for help, to complain…But what she can't do is to give up.
"Kairi." the girl looked at him with unshed tears in her eyes. "It's alright to cry, complain or even to run away. But what isn't okay is to give up."
She sniffled but the tears finally were falling down her cheeks. He got her to take her medicine and got some food.
He let her have a few days of rest so her stamina would be ready for the hard training ahead of her….
Author's note:
That's it for chapter 3! Poor Kairi is going through it at the moment but it won't be getting easier for her.
Next chapter will up as soon as I can, I'm just too busy throughout the week to get one up and I'm using the manga since I do not have Netflix to do it. But I will be using the Mugen train movie when I get to that arc, which I've already written a little bit of.
The next chapter is called, Training to be a Demon Slayer.
