Episode 3
(Later, the Princess comes running into the chamber with Hopper, Victoria and Callum behind her. The Princess is now wearing on a long black leather coat over her tuxedo and Victoria has on an anorak, similar to that of Hopper and Callum. Inside the chamber, Kaftan is still where she was previously, sprawled out on the floor by the table. The gun is also still on the table.)
PRINCESS: (Looking at Kaftan) Well, at least she hasn't moved.
VICTORIA: (Panicked) But the hatch is still closed. We must find a way to open it.
HOPPER: Now hold on. No one's pulling any levers until I know what this is all about.
CALLUM: I don't reckon we should have left the rocket, Captain. (Shrugs) I can't see much wrong here.
VICTORIA: Not much wrong? Are you blind, the pair of you?!
PRINCESS: Easy, Victoria–
(Victoria is already marching over to the hatch, pointing at it.)
VICTORIA: What about this then?
CALLUM: I can't see any change, Vic.
VICTORIA: That's just it. They're down there now.
HOPPER: Then why close the hatch on them? Doesn't make sense, Vic.
VICTORIA: You're not listening!
HOPPER: Oh, am I not? Listen I came down here, didn't I?
VICTORIA: I never would have suggested that we get you if I'd known–
PRINCESS: All right, all right! (To Hopper & Callum) Stop winding up my friend, please.
CALLUM: We're not trying to wind her up, I just don't see what the problem is.
PRINCESS: Look, the men all went down there after Klieg figured out how to open the hatch, while we three stayed up here. Kaftan then drugged us and while we were unconscious, she sealed the hatch trapping them down there.
HOPPER: All right, why'd she do it?
PRINCESS: (Sincerely) You know, I hadn't thought to ask her that.
CALLUM: Well, you're not going to be able to ask her until she wakes up.
VICTORIA: Never mind that, how are we going to open the hatch?
HOPPER: Well, were either of you here when they opened the hatch the first time?
VICTORIA: Yes, we both were.
HOPPER: Well, you must have some idea which switch it is?
VICTORIA: I don't know, I wasn't looking.
HOPPER: And you?
PRINCESS: Sorry.
VICTORIA: (Pointing to the control panel) I think it's one of those levers down there.
(Hopper and Callum look to each other.)
CALLUM: She thinks.
VICTORIA: Well, I'm sorry but I just can't remember.
PRINCESS: The only person that would know which switch to use would be Kaftan.
HOPPER: Yes, but as we've established, she's asleep.
PRINCESS: Then let's wake her up.
(The Princess makes her way over to Kaftan's body.)
HOPPER: No, not asleep, asleep. I mean unconscious.
CALLUM: Yeah, how do you plan on getting her out of that?
PRINCESS: Oh, I have a very special technique.
(The Princess holds Kaftan's nose tightly. And suddenly Kaftan sits up, gasping for breath.)
PRINCESS: My friend taught me that. She was always very good at telling when I was pretending to sleep. We both were.
HOPPER: All right, lady, which switch opens the hatch? Come on, we don't have all day.
KAFTAN: Why should I tell you?
HOPPER: Your own men are down there, remember?
KAFTAN: The hatch will remain closed until Klieg gives the signal?
HOPPER: But why close it in the first place?
KAFTAN: That is none of your concern. You're paid to fly the rocket, nothing more.
HOPPER: And yet I find myself continually dragged into business other than, 'flying my rocket,' now tell us which switch opens the hatch, or–
KAFTAN: Or what? You'll harm a defenceless woman?
(Hopper and Callum look between each other unsure on how to proceed.)
VICTORIA: But you must do something!
PRINCESS: What was Klieg's signal?
KAFTAN: Why?
PRINCESS: Well, there was a knocking coming from the hatch earlier.
(Kaftan stares at the Princess intensely for a moment.)
KAFTAN: (Confidently) You are lying.
PRINCESS: I am. We've been out of the room for a while. Had to get Captain Hopper and this new coat. What do you think by the way? I'm not entirely sure myself, but it suits me better than one of those anoraks.
KAFTAN: You won't fool me.
PRINCESS: No. You're quite smart. But what if Klieg did give you the signal, while you were unconscious and we were out of the room? He and the others might be in danger.
KAFTAN: Nonsense.
VICTORIA: You seem very confident in whatever it is your doing.
KAFTAN: Of course.
PRINCESS: And you don't see any future where Klieg is trapped down there with no way to signal you?
KAFTAN: No.
PRINCESS: Well I do. And let me tell you something, Kaftan, it's not a future I want to see become real.
KAFTAN: You're nothing but a scared little fool.
PRINCESS: You've got me pegged all right, but then I have one distinct advantage over you. I know what the Cybermen are capable of.
(The Princess stands up, leaving Kaftan.)
CALLUM: Well, now what?
HOPPER: We'll just have to rip the panel apart, try following the wiring.
VICTORIA: How long would that take?
CALLUM: Depends how long and detailed the wiring is.
PRINCESS: It would take too long.
HOPPER: Well, we're not about to start guessing. Not after what happened with the door.
VICTORIA: That's it the door!
CALLUM: What about it?
VICTORIA: Princess, you tried to open the door.
PRINCESS: Yes.
VICTORIA: You knew the door wasn't a danger anymore.
CALLUM: Yeah, how did you know that?
PRINCESS: Well…
VICTORIA: It was one of your premonitions, wasn't it?
PRINCESS: Yes…
HOPPER: Premonitions?
VICTORIA: Well, try a switch. I'm sure you'll get the right one.
PRINCESS: It doesn't work like that, Victoria. I can't force it, remember, I told you. I just say, do and know things without realising.
VICTORIA: But you must try?
HOPPER: Am I missing something here?
PRINCESS: (To Hopper) Yes.
VICTORIA: Please, Princess, just try.
PRINCESS: It won't work, Victoria, it never has.
VICTORIA: Well, try relaxing. Oh, what about meditation. I've heard that can be a good way to relax.
PRINCESS: Well…maybe, but–
VICTORIA: We must try something, so come on, sit down.
(Victoria takes the Princess before the control panel and has her sit down cross-legged.)
VICTORIA: Right, now, close your eyes and try to empty your mind.
PRINCESS: Victoria–
VICTORIA: Come on, Princess, the Doctor and Jamie are counting on us.
(The Princess sighs, before taking a deep breath and closing her eyes.)
HOPPER: Listen, Vic, I don't think some hocus pocus is going–
VICTORIA: Shhh! She's trying to concentrate.
(Hopper and Callum look to each other exhaustedly.)
VICTORIA: Just try not to think about anything, Princess.
PRINCESS: That's not easy for me, Victoria. There's a lot going on in my head. So many thoughts and ideas and flashes. It's like a fireworks display in here.
VICTORIA: Well…block them out one at a time. Try to see past it all. To a place where you can't hear or see anything.
(The Princess remains silent for a long moment, breathing steadily. Inside her mind, many voices whisper and many imagines flash by. But as the seconds go by and her breathing becomes slower. The voices fade away, and the pictures don't flash by as fast. The gaps between them growing until eventually there is just a black empty void inside her head. Then an image appears of the Princess, Victoria, Hopper and Callum stood before the control panel in the chamber. Then another image, of the Princess pulling a lever. Then the hatch opening. The Princess' eyes fly open as she gasps, grabbing Victoria's arm.)
PRINCESS: I saw it! I know the lever we need to pull! I know which lever!
VICTORIA: Really?!
HOPPER: What?!
(Victoria helps the Princess to her feet.)
PRINCESS: Yes, yes!
VICTORIA: But that's brilliant!
PRINCESS: No, you're brilliant, you're a genius, Victoria. That was clearest my premonitions have ever been and I saw it… I saw the future, just a snapshot, only a few seconds ahead. But thanks to you we can free them. All I have to do is–
KAFTAN: Don't move!
(Everyone turns, seeing Kaftan has stood up, having picked up the gun from the table. She now aims it at the group, stood by the control panel. Slowly, everyone raises their hands in the air.)
HOPPER: Now look here, lady.
KAFTAN: I shall kill you!
VICTORIA: Just let us open the hatch, please.
KAFTAN: And let you ruin all we've worked for, never. The hatch remains closed until Klieg gives the signal. And to make sure of that.
(Kaftan aims the gun at the Princess. Callum slides in between them blocking the shot.)
KAFTAN: Step aside.
CALLUM: Just take it easy.
KAFTAN: I said step aside!
PRINCESS: Callum, do as she says.
CALLUM: No.
PRINCESS: I don't want anyone else getting hurt! Move or I'll move around you.
(Reluctantly, Callum steps away.)
PRINCESS: All right, Kaftan. Let's talk about this.
KAFTAN: I think not.
HOPPER: Come on, you don't think she actually knows which switch it is, do you?
KAFTAN: Of course not.
HOPPER: Then there's no need to kill her.
KAFTAN: I'd rather not take the chance.
PRINCESS: It's not the switch, Captain. She just doesn't like me.
KAFTAN: That is also true.
PRINCESS: That's good, you hold on to that feeling, Kaftan. It means you're not like the Cybermen.
VICTORIA: Princess.
PRINCESS: It's all right, Victoria.
VICTORIA: No, it's not, she's going to shoot you!
PRINCESS: In the middle of our conversation, that would be awfully rude. You don't strike me as a rude person, Kaftan. A little crazy and idiotic perhaps but–
KAFTAN: Excuse me?
PRINCESS: Oh, I mean idiotic in your plan to…well, whatever it is you're doing with the Cybermen. No, no, you're actually quite smart. It's just you have a bad habit of backing the wrong ideas.
KAFTAN: Is that so?
PRINCESS: Well, that plan you cooked up with your sister to take over the French operations springs to mind.
KAFTAN: (Shocked) How-How could you possibly know about that?
PRINCESS: Like I said to Victoria, things just pop into my head.
KAFTAN: Well, allow me to help you with that issue.
(Kaftan prepares to fire the gun at the Princess' head.)
PRINCESS: Just don't hit the hat, please.
(Suddenly Victoria screams and points to the Cybermat on the floor. Kaftan turns to look and Hopper takes the opportunity to rush her, snatching the gun from her and shoving her against the table, gun pressed into her side.)
HOPPER: Watch her, Jim. If she moves, blast her.
(Callum steps forward as Hopper hands him the gun.)
CALLUM: Right.
HOPPER: Ah, you scream real good, Vic.
PRINCESS: And you think quick too, well done!
VICTORIA: Princess, the hatch!
PRINCESS: The hatch? Oh, yes, the hatch!
(The Princess hurries over to the control panel.)
KAFTAN: You can't let her touch those controls, she could kill us all.
PRINCESS: I could…
(The Princess pulls a lever, and the hatch opens.)
PRINCESS: But I won't.
VICTORIA: You did it!
PRINCESS: We did it.
(The Princess, Victoria and Hopper gather around the open hatch, looking down.)
VICTORIA: It's very quiet down there.
HOPPER: Yeah, too quiet.
VICTORIA: Doc–!
(The Princess covers Victoria's mouth.)
PRINCESS: I don't think we should announce the hatch is open just yet.
HOPPER: Why not?
PRINCESS: Because we don't know what else is down there.
HOPPER: Well, how long have they been down there anyway?
VICTORIA: About an hour.
HOPPER: And there's no sign of them.
PRINCESS: If we did miss Klieg's signal, then surely they'd wait below the hatch.
HOPPER: That's my thinking.
VICTORIA: Unless something's happened to them?
HOPPER: Let me head down, see if they're nearby.
PRINCESS: Hold on, anything could be down there. We don't want to go empty handed.
HOPPER: Good thinking. Hey, Jim, what are those bombs loaded with?
CALLUM: Smoke.
HOPPER: Great. Give us a couple, will you?
CALLUM: Yeah, sure.
(Callum rummages around in his satchel while watching Kaftan with the gun.)
HOPPER: Come on, come on.
CALLUM: Yeah, yeah.
(Callum pulls out a few smoke bombs and hands them to Hopper. Hopper then turns around to find the Princess in his path, who immediately takes the bombs from him, one at a time.)
PRINCESS: Thank you, Captain Hopper, these will do.
HOPPER: Whoa, what do you think you're doing?!
PRINCESS: Here you are, Victoria.
(The Princess hands two bombs to Victoria.)
VICTORIA: How do they work?
PRINCESS: Just pull the pin out the top then throw it away from you. Bit primitive, but needs must.
HOPPER: Now hold on just a sec, you're not going down there!
PRINCESS: Of course we are.
HOPPER: Uh-uh, not happening, I'll go.
PRINCESS: Alone? That seems a foolish. Take Callum with you.
HOPPER: I'm not leaving you two up here alone with her.
PRINCESS: Well then, we'll go down there and you stay up here with Callum.
HOPPER: Now stop fooling around, this isn't–
PRINCESS: We seem to be going around in circles here. Luckily, I've got just the thing for this.
(Putting the smoke bombs in her pocket, the Princess takes out her deck of cards.)
VICTORIA: Princess…
PRINCESS: Don't worry, Victoria, I just need a few more seconds with Captain Hopper here.
(The Princess spreads the cards out in her hands.)
PRINCESS: Pick a card.
HOPPER: I thought you said–
PRINCESS: Humour me, Captain, and this will go a lot quicker.
HOPPER: Fine.
(Hopper snatches a card.)
HOPPER: Now what?
PRINCESS: Look at it.
(Hopper looks at it.)
PRINCESS: Now, put it back in the deck.
(Hopper puts the card back, and the Princess starts shuffling the cards.)
PRINCESS: Now close your eyes.
HOPPER: You don't seriously–
PRINCESS: Eyes closed please!
(With a huff, Hopper closes his eyes. And immediately the Princess and Victoria hurry down the hatch into the tunnels below.)
HOPPER: Well, now what? Lady, you better not–
(Hopper opens his eyes, seeing the Princess and Victoria have disappeared.)
HOPPER: Hey, wait…! Oh, those idiots. Going to get themselves killed.
(Climbing down a ladder, Victoria shivers as the Princess looks around at the connecting tunnels.)
VICTORIA: It's freezing down here.
PRINCESS: It is, and unusual too.
VICTORIA: What do you mean?
PRINCESS: Well, usually the further underground you go, the hotter it gets.
VICTORIA: Oh.
PRINCESS: Which means the Cybermen must have some substantial power source to keep this place this cold. But why, what's it all for?
VICTORIA: Can we focus on finding the Doctor and Jamie.
PRINCESS: Right, sorry. Yes, of course. You just keep me focused. I drift off from time to time.
VICTORIA: I have noticed.
PRINCESS: This way.
VICTORIA: Why that way? Is it a premonition?
PRINCESS: My ears actually. I can hear something this way. Come on.
(Victoria then follows the Princess as they proceed through the tunnels. As they do, a buzzing like sound grows in volume. It's like chatter, but impossible to make out. After a moment, the Princess holds up a hand, indicating for Victoria to stop. The Princess then puts her finger to her lips, then points to Victoria and down one of the tunnels. The Princess then points to the smoke bomb Victoria is holding. Victoria nods, before cautiously heading down the tunnel. The Princess waits for Victoria to reach the end, then goes down the other tunnel. At the end is an opening, which leads into a large chamber. In the centre of the room, the Princess sees the Doctor, Jamie, Klieg, Perry and Toberman. Around them stand several Cybermen, forming a ring, while ahead stand a group of Cybermen who are conversing – the cause of the buzzing like chatter. And behind them, lining the walls, are hundreds of tombs, with ladders leading up to dozens of walkways, which head right up to the celling. Some of the tombs have been opened, but not all, and Cybermen can still be seen inside, frozen away. But the ice is melting, and the Princess can see it dripping down onto the floor. She can also see Victoria, at the other entrance to the chamber. The Princess waves her back, and the two hide. Meanwhile, the group of Cyberman part, as one with a larger head approaches the prisoners – the Cyber-Controller.)
CYBER-CONTROLLER: We have decided how you will be used.
KLIEG: Yes?
CYBER-CONTROLLER: You are a logician. Our race is also logical. You will be the leader of the new race.
KLIEG: You will listen to my proposals then?
CYBER-CONTROLLER: Yes, we will listen, but first you will be altered.
KLIEG: Altered?
CYBER-CONTROLLER: You have fear. We will eliminate fear from your brain. Yes. You will be the first. (Points to Parry) And you will be the next.
PARRY: No, no!
CYBER-CONTROLLER: You will be like us.
(Suddenly, the Princess' top hat slides into the room, rim gliding across the floor. Everyone sees it and is confused. The Cybermen look between each other, before one approaches the hat and lifts it up off the floor. As it does, it sets off the smoke bomb that was underneath, unleashing a cloud of smoke upon the room.)
PRINCESS: Now, Victoria!
(Pulling the pins, the Princess and Victoria start hurling their smoke bombs into various spots around the chamber, concealing the whole place in thick smoke.)
PRINCESS: This way, come on! Follow my voice, run!
(From out of the smoke, comes Jamie.)
JAMIE: Princess?!
PRINCESS: Hello, Jamie! Stand aside.
(The Princess moves Jamie aside as Parry stumbles out of the smoke, coughing.)
JAMIE: Mr Parry.
PRINCESS: Help him, Jamie.
(Jamie takes Parry, supporting him as they hurry down the tunnel. Victoria then comes running around, joining the Princess.)
VICTORIA: Is it working?
PRINCESS: Hard to say, I can't see. Jamie's just gone that way with the professor.
VICTORIA: What about the Doctor?
DOCTOR: Victoria?
VICTORIA: Doctor!
PRINCESS: Over here!
(The Doctor emerges from the smoke-filled chamber, holding a handkerchief to his mouth with one hand while the other holds the Princess' top hat.)
DOCTOR: Oh, Princess. And Victoria, well done!
PRINCESS: Where's Toberman?
DOCTOR: I don't know. I think he and Klieg might have gone another way.
PRINCESS: But he has to get out!
(The Princess tries to enter the smoke-filled chamber, but the Doctor blocks her path.)
DOCTOR: No, Princess, no! We have to stop the Cybermen from escaping!
PRINCESS: But if he's in there he'll die, Doctor!
DOCTOR: We can't know that for sure, now come on! We must get back to the hatch.
PRINCESS: No!
DOCTOR: Victoria, help me.
(Awkwardly, Victoria assists the Doctor in dragging the Princess back through the tunnels, away from the smoke-filled chamber.)
PRINCESS: No, Doctor! You don't understand, let me go! Toberman, get out! Get out of here, get to the hatch!
(Cybermen appear from the smoke, marching after the fleeing time travellers. At this point, the Princess has no choice but to run back through the tunnels with the Doctor and Victoria. As they run, the Princess takes her hat from the Doctor and returns it to her head. They quickly reach the hatch, finding Jamie, who's struggling to push a still coughing Parry up the ladder.)
PARRY: I can't breathe…
JAMIE: Come on, Mr Parry, we're almost there. Hey! Hey, anyone up there!
HOPPER: (From above) I'm coming!
JAMIE: Help him up, hurry!
VICTORIA: Hurry, Jamie, hurry!
JAMIE: Victoria! Here, you go–
DOCTOR: There's no time, Jamie, just keep moving. Victoria, you go next.
VICTORIA: All right.
(Victoria gets behind Jamie, ready to climb once he moves up. Above, Hopper has grabbed onto Parry's arm and is pulling him up as Jamie pushes him from beneath.)
HOPPER: Come on, almost there. Got you.
(Hopper helps Parry down the steps, sitting him down at the table. At which point Callum puts away the gun he's holding and runs up the steps to help Jamie out of the hatch.)
JAMIE: Aye, thanks. Come on, Victoria.
VICTORIA: I'm coming.
DOCTOR: After you, Princess.
PRINCESS: No, you first, Doctor.
DOCTOR: So you can go running off to find, Toberman? No, you go up.
PRINCESS: But–
DOCTOR: We won't close the hatch until we have to.
(The Princess sees behind the Doctor, her eyes widening.)
PRINCESS: Which will be right now!
(The Doctor looks back, seeing Cybermen approaching.)
DOCTOR: Oh, my! Quick, up the ladder, go!
(The Princess hurries up the ladder, with the Doctor behind her. Up top, Jamie is waiting to help them out.)
PRINCESS: The Cybermen are here!
(Jamie grabs the Princess' arm and helps her up out of the hatch, making room for the Doctor.)
HOPPER: (To Callum) As soon as the Doctor's up, slam down that hatch!
CALLUM: Okay.
(Callum races over to the control panel.)
HOPPER: Stand by!
(The Doctor is scampering up the hatch. The Princess and Jamie grab on to help him out when–)
DOCTOR: Ah! He's got my leg!
(The Princess and Jamie try to pull the Doctor out, but he won't budge.)
JAMIE: Doctor, come on! Come on!
DOCTOR: It's no use!
(The Doctor screams in pain as the Cyberman begins climbing over him, trying to get out. Jamie quickly lifts his foot and gives the Cyberman a kick to the face. It doesn't fall though, as it clings onto the Doctor, who's struggles to keep himself from falling.)
PRINCESS: Doctor, hold on!
DOCTOR: What do you think I'm doing!
JAMIE: Get off him!
(Another kick from Jamie and the Cyberman losses its balance, falling back into the hatch.)
JAMIE: Quick, get him up!
(Jamie and the Princess haul the Doctor out of the hatch.)
HOPPER: Jim!
CALLUM: On it!
(Callum throws the lever as the hatch begins to close. They all sigh in relief as the hatch begins to lower.)
VICTORIA: Look out!
(The Doctor, Princess and Jamie jump back as a Cyberman appears reaching out to grab them. The three tumble down the steps and onto the floor. Unable to reach them now, the Cyberman tries to hold the hatch up. But it proves too much for it, as it is slowly pushed down below. Then, finally, the hatch is sealed.)
CALLUM: Got him!
(But it's still not over, as the Cyberman begins to bang on the hatch. It rattles and shakes but does not budge. Then the banging stops.)
VICTORIA: Is it…Is it over?
CALLUM: Yeah. Yeah, I think it is, Vic.
JAMIE: Are you all right, Doctor?
DOCTOR: Yes, thank you, Jamie. Just a little bruising around the ankle, I should think.
(The Princess, Jamie and the Doctor begin climbing up off the floor and to their feet.)
PRINCESS: Can you stand?
DOCTOR: Yes, yes.
(From the table, Parry stands, running his hand down his face.)
PARRY: That was a near thing. Is anyone missing?
HOPPER: Yes. Klieg, Toberman and Viner they're still down there.
PARRY: Viner…Viner's dead. Shot by Klieg.
(Parry looks scornfully to Kaftan who turns away, with no shame or remorse.
PRINCESS: Well, Toberman and Klieg are still trapped.
JAMIE: Leave 'em down there, that's what I say.
DOCTOR: Jamie.
JAMIE: No, I'm serious. Pair of murderers if you ask me.
PRINCESS: Who did Toberman murderer?
JAMIE: Well…no one, but he's working for her and she's in it with Klieg, isn't she?
VICTORIA: Yes, she is.
DOCTOR: Regardless we can't just leave them down there to die.
PRINCESS: Or worse.
HOPPER: Well, I'm not taking any rescue party down there. And after that fiasco I'd suggest that hatch stays closed permanently.
PARRY: Yes, perhaps that it the wisest thing to do.
KAFTAN: You can't just leave them down there.
VICTORIA: Forgive me, but wasn't that what you wanted?
DOCTOR: Not like this I imagine. She and Klieg, like all of us, vastly underestimated the Cybermen. All of this was a trap after all, to lure in the brightest minds, so that the Cybermen could convert and use them.
PRINCESS: That's why the table's there! It's not for the Cybermen, it's for the people who came to find them.
DOCTOR: Precisely.
JAMIE: Eh?
DOCTOR: Well, the Cybermen wanted people to find them, Jamie, welcome them in to solve their puzzles.
PRINCESS: And what's more welcoming than a nice table?
DOCTOR: Quite.
JAMIE: I can think of a few things.
(Suddenly there's a knock from the hatch, a rhythmic knock.)
PARRY: Don't open it. It may be the Cybermen.
DOCTOR: No. No, it's too soft. It must be Toberman and Klieg.
HOPPER: Ah, you're crazy.
PARRY: You're right. We can't leave them down there, even if they are killers.
JAMIE: Oh, they're probably both frozen solid by now.
(The rhythmic knock comes again.)
KAFTAN: You must let them up. They must be saved.
DOCTOR: Yes, they're more dangerous down there than they are up here.
HOPPER: What? Well, okay. Jim?
(Hopper holds his hand out for the gun. Callum passes it to him before Hopper takes aim at the hatch.)
HOPPER: Okay, let her go.
(Callum pulls the lever and the hatch opens. Immediately Klieg comes scurrying out.)
KLIEG: Close it! Close it, quick!
(Callum does just that, pushing the lever back as the hatch closes over once more. Meanwhile, Klieg scampers to the table, panicked and breathing heavily. Everyone gathers around, with Hopper keeping his gun aimed at Klieg.)
KAFTAN: Eric!
PRINCESS: Where's Toberman?
KLIEG: They've got him.
PRINCESS: Then it's too late.
KAFTAN: What are you talking about.
PRINCESS: If they have him, they'll start converting him.
KAFTAN: Don't be stupid, how could you possibly know that?
DOCTOR: (To Klieg) Do you still think you can form an alliance with the Cybermen, Mr Klieg?
KLIEG: If I'd only been in a stronger position to bargain with them.
PARRY: You must be out of your mind, Klieg.
HOPPER: You're not in any position to bargain with anybody right now. Well, what are we going to do with him?
PARRY: I'd feel much happier if they weren't left in here.
DOCTOR: Well, what about the testing room? There's only one door. They can't get out.
PARRY: That's a good idea. They'll be quite safe in there.
HOPPER: Callum.
(Hopper pulls Klieg from his seat and shoves him towards the doorway on the right side of the room. Hopper then hands Callum the gun.)
CALLUM: Right. Mr Klieg? Ms Kaftan?
(Callum escorts Klieg and Kaftan through the doorway on the right and out of the chamber.)
HOPPER: Now, if I don't get back to the rocket, we're not going to take off for another twenty-four hours for sure.
PARRY: We'll come with you.
HOPPER: I've told you before, not till I'm operational again. I'll let you know when that is. I don't think you'll have any more trouble with your friends down there.
DOCTOR: We shall see.
PRINCESS: Before you go, Captain…
(The Princess flicks her wrist and a card from her deck appears in her hand.)
PRINCESS: Is this your card?
(Hopper looks at it, the six of diamonds.)
HOPPER: Nope.
PRINCESS: Rats.
(The Princess looks at the card, frowning. Shaking his head, Hopper leaves the chamber, heading out onto the planet's surface. And leaves the rest of the group inside the tomb.)
(Later, everyone is getting some much-needed rest. In the chamber, Callum and Parry are asleep by the stairs leading to the hatch, while Jamie is sprawled out on the table. Victoria is sat on the table, facing the right-side door, holding the gun – on watch. By the control panel, the Princess is asleep, leaning back so her head rests against the panel, her top hat still on. As for the Doctor, he's sat at the side of the control panel, leaning against it with his arm hugging a thick piece of cable coming from the panelling. Slowly, the Doctor begins to twitch. He then scratches his face, before yawning. The sound startles Victoria, who swings around, aiming the gun. The Doctor quickly throws up his arms in surrender.)
DOCTOR: I'm on your side, remember?
(Relaxing, and a little embarrassed, Victoria lowers the gun, as the Doctor brings down his hands. He then checks his watch.)
DOCTOR: Hey, why didn't you wake me? I should have been on watch half an hour ago.
(The Doctor gets up and joins Victoria by the table.)
VICTORIA: I thought you should rest.
DOCTOR: Why me?
VICTORIA: No reason really.
DOCTOR: Oh, I think I know. Is it because I'm–
VICTORIA: Well, if you are four hundred and fifty years old, you need a great deal of sleep.
(The Doctor sits on the table next to Victoria.)
DOCTOR: Well, that's very considerate of you, Victoria. But between you and me, I'm really quite lively actually, all things being considered. So's the Princess.
(The Doctor and Victoria look to the Princess, who suddenly snores.)
DOCTOR: Although perhaps this, 'Sleep,' you speak of does catch up with us in the end.
(Victoria tries to suppress a giggle. Then things go quiet.)
DOCTOR: Are you happy with us, Victoria?
VICTORIA: Yes, I am… At least, I would be if my father were here.
DOCTOR: Yes, I know, I know.
VICTORIA: I wonder what he would have thought if he could see me now.
DOCTOR: You miss him very much, don't you?
VICTORIA: It's only when I close my eyes. I can still see him standing there, before those horrible Dalek creatures came to the house. He was a very kind man. I shall never forget him. Never.
DOCTOR: No, of course you won't. But, you know, the memory of him won't always be a sad one.
VICTORIA: I think it will. You can't understand, being so ancient.
DOCTOR: Eh?
VICTORIA: I mean old.
DOCTOR: Oh.
VICTORIA: You probably can't remember your family.
DOCTOR: Oh yes, I can when I want to. And that's the point, I have to really want to bring them back in front of my eyes. The rest of the time they sleep in my mind, and I forget, and so will you. (Victoria shakes her head) Oh yes, you will. You'll find there's so much else to think about. So remember, our lives are different to anybody else's. That's the exciting thing. There's nobody in the universe can do what we're doing.
(The Doctor gently takes the gun from Victoria. He then slides off the table, promoting Victoria to do the same.)
DOCTOR: Now, you must get some sleep, and let this poor old man stay awake.
(The Doctor sits Victoria down next to Jamie. He then removes his cloak, folding it up to act as a pillow for her. Victoria smiles gratefully, before closes her eyes and drifting off. The Doctor smiles, before making his way around the table. As he does, he notices the Princess sat up, wide awake.)
DOCTOR: (Quietly) I thought you were awake.
PRINCESS: (Quietly) Still need to work on my snoring then.
DOCTOR: I'd say. With one like that, it's no surprise your friend always new when you were faking.
(The Princess pulls a face, making the Doctor grin. As the Doctor then sits down at the table, the Princess gets up and joins him. Both then look to their sleeping companions.)
PRINCESS: Aren't they cute when their sleeping?
DOCTOR: (Chuckling) Jamie, certainly talks back less.
PRINCESS: That was nice, what you said to Victoria.
(The Doctor puts his arm around the Princess.)
DOCTOR: Don't worry, she's just get used to all this.
PRINCESS: I hope so. But I hope more that we'll be able to keep our promise to her father, that we'll be able to protect her.
DOCTOR: We will.
PRINCESS: She's brilliant you know.
DOCTOR: I'm aware.
PRINCESS: No, but earlier, she… She helped me trigger a premonition.
DOCTOR: What? You mean...
PRINCESS: It wasn't just random this time. I made it happen.
DOCTOR: I see.
PRINCESS: She helped me calm myself down and really focus. It wasn't as detailed as others have been. It was like a series of snapshots. But I retained everything, and it was exactly what I needed.
DOCTOR: That's brilliant. But even so, I think we should proceed with caution. You can't become reliant on them.
PRINCESS: I know, Doctor. But it's just…for once being able to control them, rather than have them just happen.
(The Doctor pats the Princess on the back.)
DOCTOR: I'm glad. But promise me, you'll be careful.
PRINCESS: I will.
DOCTOR: Take it slow.
PRINCESS: I will.
DOCTOR: And tell me every time–
(The Princess spots something on the floor.)
PRINCESS: Doctor.
DOCTOR: I know, I know, I'm being overprotective again. It's just that I worry about–
PRINCESS: No, Doctor. Look!
(The Princess points, and the Doctor looks, seeing a Cybermat making its way across the floor. Putting the gun down, the Doctor stands up along with the Princess.)
DOCTOR: Jamie, Victoria. Callum, wake up. Wake up!
JAMIE: (Waking) Wha…?
VICTORIA: What is it?
PRINCESS: Just stand up, both of you, but don't make any sudden movements.
(The Princess makes her way around the table and helps Victoria to her feet.)
VICTORIA: Why not?
PRINCESS: We're not alone.
(Victoria gasps, pointing towards Callum, who's still asleep on the floor by the stairs. Unaware of the Cybermat that has climbed onto his chest.)
DOCTOR: Callum. Callum.
VICTORIA: It's one of those terrible things again.
(Callum begins to wake and quickly notices the Doctor standing over him, as well as the Cybermat on his chest.)
DOCTOR: Don't move, Callum. Don't move.
(The Doctor then swings his hand, quickly knocking the Cybermat away, before yanking Callum up onto his feet. Rather than attack again, the Cybermat scurries out of sight.)
JAMIE: Where'd it go?!
DOCTOR: Get back to the controls, all of you. Steady, don't make any sudden movements.
(As Jamie, Victoria and the Princess back up to the control panel, Callum grabs the gun from the table before joining them. Meanwhile, the Doctor wake a still sleeping Parry.)
DOCTOR: Parry, Parry. Wake up, Parry. Wake up, wake up.
(Parry sits up, sleepy and confused. But he livens up once he sees the Cybermat approaching them.)
VICTORIA: Doctor, behind you!
(The Doctor turns and pulls Parry close to him.)
DOCTOR: Now, don't panic. Come back with us. Steady.
PRINCESS: There's more of them, look.
(From around the walls of the room, more Cybermats slither out.)
VICTORIA: What do we do?
DOCTOR: We'll all go in the other room and lock them out.
(The group turn to enter the left side room, only to find a row of Cybermats blocking their path.)
PRINCESS: Try the other door?
DOCTOR: Yes, yes, we'll try the–
(Cybermats are also now blocking the door on the right side of the room.)
CALLUM: Let's get out of here. The main doors.
(But before Callum can step away, the Princess pulls him back.)
PRINCESS: It's too late.
(A swarm of Cybermats has formed before the entrance to the tomb, blocking the group in.)
VICTORIA: Oh Doctor, we're trapped!
DOCTOR: Back against the controls, everybody.
PRINCESS: And then do we climb on top of it?
DOCTOR: No, no. No…
(The Doctor thinks for a moment, with the group pressed right up against the control panel, as the swarm of Cybermats begins to close in. He then spots the thick cable he was hugging earlier.)
DOCTOR: Here, spread this out around us on the ground.
JAMIE: What good will that–
DOCTOR: Just do it, Jamie, please!
(The Doctor makes his way across to the other side of the control panel, with the Princess, Parry and Jamie kicking the cable out as he does, forming a perimeter around them.
CALLUM: Let's just blast the filthy things!
(Callum fires the gun at three of the Cybermats, stopping them as smoke bursts out of them. But there's still dozens of more coming towards the group.)
DOCTOR: You're wasting your time. There are too many of them. Now, do what I say. Come back!
(Everyone steps back from the cable laying around them. The Doctor then flicks one of the switches on the control panel.)
JAMIE: Nothing's happening, Doctor!
DOCTOR: Wait, wait.
(The Cybermats get closer and closer.)
VICTORIA: Doctor!
DOCTOR: Keep calm.
(The Cybermats are upon them. All that stands between them is the cable at their feet. The first Cybermat touches it…and stops dead. Then another. And another. Then the rest begin to spin around on the spot, smoke drifting out of them.)
DOCTOR: There you are, you see!
PARRY: What are those creatures?
PRINCESS: Cybermats, Professor.
VICTORIA: Are they safe now?
(All the Cybermats have come to a stop, all perfectly still on the floor around the cable.)
DOCTOR: Oh, yes, quite safe now. The power cable generated an electrical field and confused their tiny metal minds. You might almost say that they've had a complete metal breakdown.
(The Princess giggles, while Jamie groans.)
DOCTOR: I'm so sorry, Jamie.
PRINCESS: I liked it.
DOCTOR: Thank you, Princess.
VICTORIA: What about Klieg and Kaftan? They've probably attacked them as well.
PRINCESS: You're right. We should go and check on them.
DOCTOR: Come on. Now mind your feet.
(Carefully, the group make their way over the cable and the dead Cybermats. Once safely across, they look up to find Klieg and Kaftan stood in the doorway on the right. With Klieg proudly holding the weapon that once belonged to the headless Cyberman in the testing room.)
KLIEG: Most ingenious, Doctor. Now, let's see what you can do against this.
(Klieg aims the weapon at the Doctor, and fires…)
