Wright and Co. Law Office.
Early Morning.
—
It was another calm day at the Wright and Co. Law Office and Phoenix Wright were at his office reading some files. Today was a busy day and he have taken a brief break before to went back to work. But even on his break, he was reading the files as his own life depends on it. He was so focused he was not paying attention to his surroundings when a young girl went in and suddenly jump on him, scaring the poor defense attorney, and making him drop the files.
— Hey Nick, I heard we have a new case! — The girl chippered excitedly. Phoenix sighed and took the files from the floor.
— Yes, we have a new case, and it's a big one.
— That's great! We kinda need a big work to pay the rent for this month. Our last case wasn't that rentable.
— Maya, please calm down.
— How can I be. We're working on the red this last month. And we kinda need some excitement these days! — She exclaimed happily.
Maya Fey was jumping in excitement as she was staring at her friend and crush Phoenix Wright. She was grateful for him defending her and even risking his career and life for him, even when she knows she doesn't show that much. She was happy for staying at her side and that was enough for her.
— Yeah, yeah, we have a case now please be quiet Maya. I need to study the details for the trial. — Phoenix said, as he started to read the files again. Maya saw his behavior of Phoenix and think it was odd, considering how he usually proceeds in the investigations. Usually focused on his work, and was even a little easygoing considering how their investigations usually went. Not like the serious person in front of the medium, who even doesn't pay attention when she arrived.
— Come on, Nick. We should relax and have some fun before we go out to investigate. — Maya said slightly annoyed by his attitude towards her. He barely was looking at her.
— That's part of my investigation. I need to check these files before I go back to the crime scene again to investigate. — Phoenix said calmly as ever as he keep his focus on the lecture.
— What!? Did you investigate the crime scene without me? — Maya asked truly surprised.
— Yes, I mean no, not quite. I need to go there, but the area was off-limits for the time being since the police forensics haven't arrived there yet, so the place is secured for the time being. Is there any problem with that? — He asked, trying to not be bothered by Maya's sudden outburst.
— Well, yeah! You usually go investigate with me, since I'm your assistant and…
Phoenix lowed the files and looked at Maya.
— Sorry about that Maya, but that's a special case and I couldn't waste time waiting for anyone. That's a special case I need to attend to.
— Oh, a special case! Tell me, it's a murder? — Maya asked, suddenly interested in the case.
— Yes, but that's not our common case of murder. It was the murder of one of the agents from the Japanese Embassy, and our client is the ambassador of Japan himself.
— What!? So that's really a BIG case!
— And the main reason I couldn't waste any time. That's a case that needs all my attention, so I need to read these files. — Phoenix replied, resuming his lecture.
Maya tapped her chin with her index finger, lost in her thoughts.
— But Nick, that's not a normal case. Our reputation is on the line.
— I know, but the real matter is to determine the ambassador's innocence.
— He's really innocent, right? You're not forced to do that, right? — Maya asked. She doesn't want Phoenix to deal with another Engarde's situation. Phoenix looked at her confused, but he eventually gets it what she meant.
— No, no! I'm doing this by my own will. Actually, I'm doing a favor, but you can be sure I'm not doing this against my will.
— Phew! At least that. I don't want you to deal with another tricky situation. — Maya said sitting on the chair in front of him. — What are these files, anyway?
— The ambassador files. I'm studying his career and personal life.
— Wow! That sounds tough! — Maya commented.
— Yes, it is. At least he doesn't have any scandals in his career, and he doesn't is the type of person who will murder anyone. I think that's a set-up and knowing that not going to be an easy case, I need to come up with some good defense and a good theory against the prosecution. I can't rely on bluffs and luck this time, not with the prosecutor in charge of this trial.
— So, the prosecutor will be Godot? — Maya asked.
— No.
— What!? So then, who will be? The chief prosecutor?
— Far from it. The prosecutor in charge is from Japan, and it's representing the entire country's interest, even if the murder doesn't happen at the embassy. Talk about a tough situation.
— Wait, so that will be at…?
— Yes. It will be a case ruled in our country, and under our laws.
— But the prosecutor…
— The prosecutor in charge had cases in other countries, especially here. So that's not necessarily a problem. — Phoenix explained.
Maya tapped her chin once again.
— Well I'd believe that explains a few things, for now, but isn't odd the fact you're doing a favor to a person to defend this guy?
Phoenix laughed.
— I knew you were going to say that. That's a favor I really need to repay since that person did a lot for me. — Phoenix said with a smile.
— I see. — Maya said. — So, what are we waiting for? Let's go.
— I still need to finish reading this file.
— You can finish on your way to the crime scene. — Maya said walking towards the door. Phoenix only sighed and went after her, smiling at the girl. As much as Maya annoyed him he liked her presence, since she managed to liup his mood. But he was nervous at the same time since he was to going to deal with a big case. He knew he will need to relax to face the trial tomorrow. When he exited his office he felt a shiver running all his back. For some reason, he had a bad feeling about that case as if something horrible was going to happen. Pushing that thought away, he sighed as Maya called him to go.
"Maybe it's not going to be that bad." He thought as he exited the building. However, deep inside knowing his luck, he knew something bad will happen. He could only wish that doesn't interfere with his work and that doesn't involve anyone close to him.
—
Marche Hotel.
Morning.
—
At the Marche Hotel, a hotel run by a famous Italian family which Phoenix only heard by the news, he and Maya went to the reception when the reception clerk was waiting for them.
— Hello, welcome to the Marche Hotel, how can I help you?
— Hello, I'm Phoenix Wright, I'm a defense attorney at law. I'm here to investigate room 782.
— Oh, you're supposed to be the ambassador's lawyer, right? You can go there; you have permission from the prosecutor in charge of the investigation. The elevators are on your right. The room is located on the seventh floor.
— Thank you.
— Wow, that was easy. — Maya commented happily, as she went into the elevator.
— That's a good thing, so we don't need to worry about the police. — Phoenix said pushing the button to the seventh floor. The doors shut and the elevator went up. At that time, Phoenix took one last look at the files. Maya who was distracted by the elevator tune, mumbling the addicting and annoying song, enjoying the ride. When the elevator stopped on the seventh floor, they walked to room 782, where a familiar face was standing outside the room, securing the place.
— Hey, pal. Sorry, but this area is off-limits. — Gumshoe said, stopping both to get into the room. Phoenix groaned. Of all the people, why always Gumshoe.
— Detective, we have the permission to get in. — Phoenix said.
— From who?
— Well, it was from the prosecutor in charge, duh! — Maya said, leaning forward, smiling.
— I never heard of such a thing, pal! A prosecutor, allowing the defense to investigate with them. The enemy!?
Phoenix sighed. That was going to be a long day.
— Detective, we received permission from the prosecution, even the forensics team has orders to allow us to investigate, so why don't you let us in already? — Phoenix said.
— No! That's out-limits, and that's final.
— Come on! — Maya whined.
— Sorry, pal. But orders are orders.
Maya sighed.
— What now?
— Let's wait. — Phoenix said calmly as ever.
— But, Nick! We need to investigate! Why don't we force our way in? — Maya suggested.
— No. Out of question.
— But Nick, we—
— Pal, if you even try to force your way in, I have to arrest you both for disturbing the crime scene.
— What!? — Maya exclaimed surprised.
— What's going on here?
Everyone turns in the voice's direction and Maya was shocked to see a gorgeous elegant businesswoman coming in their way. More surprising however was to see Phoenix Wright bowing slightly for her, and she reciprocate the action, doing the same. After the formalities, she stood in front of the detective, arms crossed and standing against him with a posture of power and elegance.
— Detective, I will ask once again: What's going on here? — The woman asked. Gumshoe was baffled as well and stared at the woman speechless.
— Er… Well…
Phoenix cleared his throat, making Gumshoe snap out of his thoughts. Looking back at the woman, he only shook his head and said:
— Sorry, pal. But this area is off-limits. This is a crime scene.
— I see. I need to come in.
— Excuse me?
— I said I need to come in.
Gumshoe stomped the floor furiously, clearly irritated by the woman's cold and stern behavior towards him.
— I'm sorry, but I can't allow you to get in. Orders from the prosecutor in charge.
The woman sighed tiredly, as she was expecting that.
— Detective Richard Gumshoe, right?
— Yes. How do you know that, pal? — The giant detective asked truly surprised. The woman shook her head as she fixed a rebel lock of her hair.
— I'm the prosecutor in charge. You have read the files, correct?
Gumshoe and Maya stared at the woman shocked. She is a prosecutor? She more looked like a top model than a prosecutor in Maya's opinion. Then Gumshoe's face bleached, as he started to sweat nervously.
— You haven't read the files, am I right?
Gumshoe shook in negative as the woman sighed again, this time in frustration.
— It seems like I need to introduce myself. My name is Sae Niijima, I'm a High Prosecutor from Japan, I'm an International Prosecutor and the prosecutor in charge of this case. Here are the files. — She said giving the files to Gumshoe. He read the files over and over to be sure everything was correct. Maya was perplexed. She only came and she simply turned the tables over as if was nothing. Then she noticed a badge on the lapel of her blazer.
— Hey Nick, she has a weird badge on her lapel.
— That's a prosecutor badge. It's designed to resemble a blazing sun looming overwinter frost, which is alleged to portray the severity of the punishment system. Our badges are based on Japanese legal badges, to avoid anyone to pass through a member of the legal system.
— What!? So, that means…
— Yes, she's a prosecutor.
— Then why don't Mr. Edgeworth and the others don't wear one? — Maya asked.
— There is a preference for some of the prosecutorial attorneys in our country to not wear it, you could say that some type of style Manfred von Karma was implemented in the court, due to his familiarity with the German legal system. That is what Miles said to me, but in Japan is obligatory to wear it. That also applies to us defense attorneys, but some people use in other ways the badges, but that's not important now. — Phoenix explained.
— Oh… — Was Maya's reply. She didn't know Phoenix knew about other countries' law systems.
Gumshoe also noticed the badge too, looking perplexed at the woman in front of him.
— You're that prosecutor from Japan…? — He asked so low Maya almost couldn't hear. She never saw Gumshoe so nervous.
— Exactly. So, are you going to stand in there blocking the way, or you'll let me in? — Sae asked.
Gumshoe stepped aside and make continence for Sae.
— Yes, sir! You can come in.
— Good. — Sae looked at Phoenix and Maya. — Why those two are here?
— Well sir, they said you allowed them to investigate, which is absurd since I don't receive such orders. — Gumshoe said laughing.
— I see…
Maya sighed and looked down. "Oh dear, Lord." She thought. She was imagining how that was going to end, with that woman not allowing them to investigate and they will lose several hours investigating other areas until she allows it, if she was going to allow it.
— I do believe I in fact gave explicit orders to allow Mr. Wright to investigate the crime scene.
Gumshoe laughed and said:
— Good one, sir.
— I wasn't joking. — Sae replied.
Gumshoe laughed until he looked at Sae, and stopped laughing.
— Are you serious, sir? — He asked. — He's the enemy, you know?
— There such is nothing of the concept of enemies in court. We are searchers of the truth, and everyone deserves a chance of a fair trial, and even to investigate the crime scene.
— But sir!
— I'm allowing Mr. Wright to investigate the crime scene. That's an order. Got it?
Gumshoe sighed defeated and said:
— Yes, sir!
Sae turned at Phoenix and Maya.
— Thank you very much. — Both Phoenix and Maya said.
— It was nothing. Maya Fey, correct?
— Yes, Nick's assistant. — The medium replied intimidated by Sae.
— As his assistant, I need to ask you to not interfere in the investigation with your reckless behavior. If anyone disturbs the crime scene our job will be prejudiced. So, if Mr. Wright or I say no, that's a no, got it?
Maya only nodded quietly. That woman was truly intimidating. Sae gave them two pairs of gloves.
— Here, wear it. You don't want to leave your fingerprints on the evidence. — Sae looked at Phoenix and smirked. — I do hope we can find anything useful, right?
— Right. — Phoenix replied, smirking as well. — If we find anything, we'll call you or the forensics.
Sae nodded and she went in. Maya looked surprised at Phoenix. How he wasn't intimated by her presence? Why she's allowing them to investigate the crime scene? And why Phoenix wasn't unfamiliar with her? This was something she couldn't understand.
— Just because she allowed you guys to investigate, that doesn't mean I will allow you guys to investigate.
— You should keep your threats and personal opinions to yourself, Detective. Otherwise, Prosecutor Niijima will have a good talk with you. — Phoenix suggested. — I heard she wasn't nice to the last guy who defy her authority.
Gumshoe gulped as Phoenix gave a smile. Maya was surprised to see that scene. Since when Phoenix was so… happy to say that? To threaten Gumshoe?
— Maya, let's go. Don't touch anything and leave it to me. — Phoenix said as he was inside. — What are you waiting for? Let's go.
Maya jumped surprised and went in. Inside the room, there were clear signs of something has happened there, especially at the corner, when probably a fight had happened. Phoenix looked carefully around, looking for some evidence. Sae looked as well, searching carefully. Maya looked and found a few things out of interest when something caught her attention. It was a fancy pen. She almost took it, when she remembered Sae's warning. Shivering in fear she turned at Phoenix, poking him.
— Yes Maya? — He asked.
— I've found something. A fancy pen. — She replied.
Phoenix glanced at Sae and looked in the direction the medium pointed. Under the desk, the pen was laying on the floor, spotless. Sae called the forensics who marked the place and took a photo of it.
— That's probably from the ambassador. That's usually the type of pen everyone uses at the embassy. — Sae explained and turned to one of the forensics. — Hey, you. There is evidence under this desk. Register, catalog, dust for fingerprints and look for any other traces.
— Yes, sir.
Sae looked at Maya and smirked.
— Thank you.
— I-It… It was nothing! — Maya blustered nervously.
Sae only looked at Phoenix, who smiled at her.
— She's usually like that. — He explained.
— I see. Well, let's resume our investigation.
Resuming the investigation, Phoenix noticed some bloodstains, also he noticed an oddity at the place the victim had died, pointing to the inconstancy of the body position. Sae also noticed a few inconstancies at the documents displayed on the table with the contents of the ambassador briefcase files, finding that odd why such files are there.
— That wine bottle. — Phoenix noticed.
— What about it? — Sae asked.
Phoenix looked at the bottle and examined it carefully.
— It's odd. I can't shake the feeling the bottle is somewhat important.
Sae stood quiet for a moment, analyzing how the table was displayed.
— I can see that. You, check the bottle and its contents. I want a full analysis of that.
— Yes sir.
Sae stood quiet and looked at the files once again.
— These files don't match with the rest of the documentation inside the briefcase of the ambassador. — Sae said reading the files.
— Can I have a look? — Phoenix asked and Sae gave him the files. Phoenix read the files carefully. — These files are from a proposal with the U.S government to open a program of scholarship interchange with some colleges. As far as I can see, that's actually a normal thing. What's bothering you?
— Actually, the briefcase was supposed to have some documents about a case of corruption, related to the embassy. Of course, all of them are mere leads and rumors. There's no solid evidence that relates them.
— In other words, that's far from related to these documents. — Phoenix said finishing reading the file and giving it back to Sae.
— Isn't that odd? I mean, why an ambassador will carry such files with him? — Maya asked as she think about it.
— It's high-probable that the ambassador is actually investigating it. Even though I've heard some schemes are happening here, however, all of them are mere rumors. Some of them say it's the Yakuza ruling that scheme, others say it's from some corrupt members of the Japanese government, others even say it's both doing or even some bigwig from a huge company or whatsoever. — Sae said.
— Yakuza? — Maya asked confused.
— The Japanese Mafia. They rule over Japan and even some other countries due to their influence. They have several legit businesses, but they also have some shady businesses as well.
— Wow! They even infiltrated the government?!
— Not quite, since our government has countermeasures for them to influence and even have any political position in the three powers, but not everything is perfect, and even if they are, they have some people that sympathize with them. Most of them are scums, although they have some ethical code and the morals for not doing certain things.
— Wow… That sounds tough.
— Yeah… It is.
Sae averted her gaze and Maya was puzzled by her reaction. "What happened to her to react like that?" The medium thought. She looked at Phoenix and she became surprised to see he was gazing at her with melancholy, as he understand her sudden attitude.
— Nick? — Maya called.
Phoenix didn't respond.
— Nick! — Maya exclaimed almost yelling.
— Yes? — Phoenix said getting out of his trance.
— Why is Ms. Niijima… looked so glum about that…?
Phoenix looked at Maya and only said:
— Some things are hard to explain, and that's one of them. She… Don't like to talk about it.
— Oh…
Maya looked around awkwardly, avoiding looking at Phoenix in his eyes, suddenly feeling as if she had done something wrong.
— It's okay. You didn't know it. — Phoenix said.
— But…
— It's fine, Maya. That's not something everyone knows, and Ms. Niijima clearly doesn't comment about it. — He said. Phoenix stood on Sae's side and hold her shoulder. — You'll be alright? — He asked.
— Yes, I will be. — Sae answered. — Let's resume our investigation.
Walking towards the place the body was discovered, Phoenix looked carefully at the bloodstains.
— Did a fight or something like that happened here? — The defense attorney asked.
— According to the report of the witnesses, they find the ambassador on the victim, acting desperately. The paramedics said he was trying to resurrect the victim, seeing the wounds on the victim's torso, but according to the witnesses present at the moment, the ambassador was trying to suffocate the victim. But that issue will be solved with the results of the autopsy report. — Sae answered.
— Seeing how the body was laying on the floor, both possibilities are possible. So for now the cause of death is asphyxiation, caused by someone who has strangled the victim to the death.
— Most probably by the ambassador, since he was the only one in this room.
Phoenix scratched his head nervously.
— This doesn't look good. — Phoenix noticed some spume on the floor. — Hey, that thing on the floor.
— What about it? — The prosecutor asked.
— Did anyone have collected a sample to analyze?
— Hey, did someone check this spume next to the body? — Sae asked a forensic.
— Not yet, sir.
— Take a sample and sent do an analysis right now.
— Yes, sir.
Sae looked and saw a pin as well.
— That pin, does anyone check what is it? — She asked.
— Yes sir. That's an embassy pin.
— Usually, only the embassy staff wears this pin. Did you check the pin register number?
— That is actually under analysis as well.
— Very well. Thank you.
— Hey, that's odd.
Maya pointed at the glass shards a little far away from the body. Sae looked carefully at it.
— Sorry for disturbing you, but what are these glass shards? — Phoenix asked a forensic.
— Sir, that was originally a vase. It was knocked up and fell from the stand. We do believe that was dropped during the fight.
— So, these shards are signs of fight… — Phoenix took note of that. — Can you send that to analysis, please?
— I don't believe these shards will be anything useful, sir, but if you insist…
— Please do as Mr. Wright requested. It doesn't hurt to look at it. — Sae ordered.
— Understood, sir.
Maya looked again at the shards and said:
— These shards are bugging me…
— All the crime scene is bugging me. All of that is more than we can see. — Phoenix confessed.
— What do you think? — Sae asked.
Phoenix held his chin, his usual habit when he went into deep thought.
— Hm… I think we need to check the scene a little more, then ask the witnesses about what happened. — Phoenix said. — Also I need to go to the detention center to talk with the ambassador himself. You were interrogating him when I went there earlier.
— I see. Let's take one last look before interrogating the witness.
Taking a last look, Phoenix noticed something off at the bed, more specifically something was under the sheets.
— Prosecutor Niijima. — Phoenix called.
Sae looked in the same direction as Phoenix and she saw a small rectangular volume. Taking off the sheet, she saw a smartphone.
— A smartphone.
— A… what? — Maya asked.
— A smartphone. It's a phone that is a small computer in short. That device has several functions, aside from making calls and sending messages obviously. — Phoenix explained.
— So cool! It's nothing like your old brick, Nick! — Maya chippered excitedly, then she asked. — So, how's that work?
— Usually by touch. — Sae said trying to access the phone data. — That's no good, it's locked and protected by a password. Better let the guys from the tech unlock it for us.
— Can I try? — Maya asked.
— No. — Phoenix said.
— You're not funny, Nick! — Maya said pouting.
— Maya, that's vital evidence. It's not an expensive toy you can play with.
— But I can find a way to unlock it. I do have hacking skills.
— Since when? — Phoenix teased. — Last time I remember you had trouble sending a mere email.
Maya blushed hard in embarrassment.
— S-S-Shut up! — She said hitting on him. Sae snickered.
— Well, if the kids have done playing, we need to investigate. — Sae said as she gives the smartphone to one of the forensics. However, she was smirking at the scene.
— We're not kids! — Maya exclaimed.
— Maya, please. — Phoenix said. Maya pouted again.
— You're agreeing with her?
— She has a point. — He replied. — Now let's get back to work.
After searching around for a few minutes, Phoenix sighed tiredly.
— Well, I believe that's all we are going to find here. — Phoenix said.
— I do agree. Honestly, I'm afraid your situation is not a favorable one. — Sae said. — Here, take this. That is the permission request, you'll need to interrogate the ambassador since the police aren't allowing anyone to interrogate them except for the Interpol agents and myself.
— Thank you Ms. Niijima.
— It's nothing. By the way, I'm going to interrogate the witnesses now. I do suggest looking over the paramedics after talking with the ambassador.
— I think the same thing. They might know something.
Maya looked at Sae thoughtfully. It was odd for a prosecutor to aid them, more than that she even let them investigate with her and gather evidence together.
— Prosecutor Niijima.
— Yes, Ms. Fey?
— Why are you helping us? I mean, we're not your enemies?
Sae glanced at the ceiling in thought.
— I do believe for a fair trial, the prosecution and the defense need to work together to find the truth and achieve a fair verdict, also I'd believe it's necessary to have some trust in each other. Also, I truly believe the ambassador is innocent, even the witness and the evidence say otherwise. That's why I let you two investigate the crime scene with me because I trust you. Actually, I trust Mr. Wright. I know he's more capable of doing his work, and his work ethic is impeccable. That's my reason.
Maya was speechless. None of the prosecutors they fought had some trust and respect for Phoenix, except for Miles at some points, but nevertheless, she never expected that from a prosecutor, especially from her.
— Detective. — Sae called.
— Yes sir! What is it, sir? — He asked.
— I want you to make sure all the evidence gathered here will be analyzed and sent to us.
— Yes sir!
— Also, I want you to give the updated autopsy report to Mr. Wright.
— Yes sir. Sir, may I ask, why are you helpin' Mr. Wright? — Gumshoe asked.
— I do trust Mr. Wright, and since he's one of the best lawyers in this state. He has my absolute confidence.
— I see… — Gumshoe turned to Phoenix. — Hey, pal. You better not do anything funny, got it.
— Got it… — Phoenix said resisting the urge to roll his eyes.
— Look, I don't know why Ms. Niijima has so much respect for you, but I'll show the real you, pal! I'll show her your true colors! — Gumshoe said grinning.
— Fine! Fine! We get it already! — Maya said annoyed. — Come on, Nick. We need to get going.
Phoenix sighed. We always end with the bossy ones, the annoying ones, or with both. Sae chuckled.
— Ha, ha. Very funny, Prosecutor Niijima.
— I think that's hilarious. To imagine you being bossed by someone younger than you.
— Well, I'm kinda the sister of his former boss, so I do have some authority over him.
— Since when!? — Phoenix exclaimed.
— Well, since always! — Maya chipped.
— Well, excuse me for not knowing my position, your Highness. So, what do you need, oh dear boss? — Phoenix replied, not resisting the urge to give a sarcastic reply.
— Well, some burgers now would be great… Wait a moment! That was sarcasm!?
— No. Why I would be sarcastic with you? You're my boss, right? You're the one who pays me up and even was generous to give me an entire office, oh dear Lady Maya Fey.
Maya blushed hard and averted her gaze from Phoenix. Sae couldn't resist and laughed.
— You idiot! — Maya yelled, stomping all her way out of the crime scene. Sae laughed even more.
— You don't need to be that sarcastic to her.
Phoenix at the moment almost buffed in annoyance. Almost. He only said:
— Well, she usually teases me and even financially abuses me. I deserve to stand up and have some respect sometimes.
Sae laughed, also Gumshoe.
— Although I can see some people see I was born to be mocked by everyone.
— Sorry, it's just, that's so absurd, I couldn't help myself. — Sae said laughing and she stopped laughing some seconds later. — But I do agree. Honestly, it's not a laughing matter, although I've laughed at how absurd it is your situation.
Phoenix ran his hand over his hair, giving a wry smile.
— Well, it's okay. It wasn't like I'm not habituated to insults, being ridiculed, physically assaulted, and even threatened, forced, coarse, and other stuff. I think I deserve that sometimes.
Sae's face twisted in irritation.
— Don't even dare to say that, even joking. You're one of the best lawyers I do know and you had done incredible things. Don't let anyone put you down. — Sae smiled. — With that said, let's go after our objectives.
Sae left the crime scene and Gumshoe looked at Phoenix surprised.
— Pal… I never saw someone had such respect for you… Except for Mr. Edgeworth… I kinda feel guilty… — Gumshoe said scratching the back of his neck disconcerted.
— That's Prosecutor Niijima for you. She is usually calm, collected, and professional, and she is straight with her words. — Phoenix replied.
— Do you know her? I thought you just met today.
— Yeah, we do know each other. — Phoenix said. — And that's all I have to say.
— Hey, pal! Wait for me! — Gumshoe said going after Phoenix who left the crime scene.
—
Maya was tapping her hands as she was looking expectantly to the ceiling, unsure of how she should proceed with a conversation with Sae. Every time she looked at her, she felt intimidated and inferior, averting her gaze from the fierce prosecutor, who was checking the time with the wristwatch.
— Hey… So… you and Nick… know each other, right…? — Maya asked.
— I beg your pardon? — Sae said confused by the sudden question.
— I asked, you and Nick know each other, right? Oh, forget it…
Sae gave an assuring smile. That doesn't make Maya ease, even a little.
— Yes. We have met before. And hey, relax I won't bite… unless you want me to do.
— What!? — Maya gasped surprised and Sae giggled.
— You're so cute, especially when you blushing.
— H-Hey, that's not nice…
— Sorry… — Sae said, regaining her cold behavior. — You know, I heard several things about you.
— You do!?
— Yes. The trials you were involved in as a defendant or channeling your sister are quite known around the law world. You're lucky, you know that. You do have people, friends, and family who care about you. Especially Phoenix.
— I… I see…
Sae looked at Maya and smiled at the girl once again.
— I do hope we could get along.
— Y-Yeah, me too… Me too…
The elevator stopped at the lobby and Sae and Maya went back to the entrance. On their way back to the reception, the prosecutor and the medium saw a man talking with the receptionist, a man Maya recognized right away.
— Hey, that's Prosecutor Godot!
— Godot…?
— He's a mysterious prosecutor, and he possesses some type of grudge toward Nick. — Maya explained.
Sae frowned.
— I wonder why he's here? — Sae said walking to the reception. Godot looked at the receptionist, who was trying to calm him down.
— I'm sorry, sir. I can't let you in. That's the prosecutor's order.
— And I'm telling you I need to get in. I'm a prosecutor, and that's the crime scene assigned to me. — Godot replied.
— But I do have expressive orders for not letting anyone unrelated to the case to went into the crime scene.
— Listen up. I'm here for work, and if you don't stop to get into my way, I'm going—
— You going to do what?
Godot turned slight at Sae, before he went back to the clerk.
— As I was saying, I'm here for work, and if you don't stop getting in my way, I'm going to make you regret it. I'll sue this place and I'll put everything on your shoulders.
— But sir, I do have orders from the prosecutor in charge, so my position stands.
Godot smiled.
— Well, it's your loss.
— Excuse me. — Sae called.
Godot turned at Sae, visibly irritated.
— Can't you see I'm busy right now? Now, why don't you go to your room and wait here? I'm dealing with this lady now.
— Hey, that's rude! — Maya shouted angrily. Godot looked at her.
— If you're here, that means Trite is here as well.
— Hey, look at us when we're talking! — Maya said. She gave a glance at Sae, who simply was calm as if nothing had happened, but the glance in her eyes was saying otherwise, as she had to deal with that type of treatment almost every day.
— Well, if you don't have anything to do, I need to—
— Hey, look at us! — Maya ordered.
— And why should I?
Sae looked at the clerk who only nodded at her in assurance.
— Godot, correct? May I have a word with you?
— Oh, and why I should lose my time talking with you?
— Perhaps you should stop bothering the clerk. And when you talk to anyone, you should look in the eye.
— Tough words for a woman, but I'm not talking with you.
— Hey, what does that mean!? — Maya asked.
— Exactly what I meant, Ms. Fey. Now I want to talk with the prosecutor.
— Perhaps you should talk with me.
Godot turned at Sae, visibly surprised, but he smirked.
— And why should I talk with you?
— You want to know the prosecutor in charge. That's me, Prosecutor Sae Niijima. I'm the lead prosecutor in the ambassador case.
— So, the prosecutor who was in charge is a gal. Quite impressive.
— I beg your pardon?
— You had performed your little investigation well, but it's time for you to go and let the men take care of it. We don't have space for little girls to play around.
— What did you just say!? — Maya exclaimed indignantly, looking to Godot and to Sae back and forth. If Sae was furious, she didn't show any traces of irritation. Instead, she said:
— As much you are a prosecutor and ignoring your stupid and ridiculous claim, I do believe and the fact is I'm the prosecutor assigned for this case. I didn't receive any notification from the Chief Prosecutor itself, so as long he doesn't assign you or anyone, I'm still on this case.
— Well, you may not have heard it, but I'm taking the lead now. All the files were already sent to the Chief Prosecutor. You're not assigned to this case anymore. Now get out of my way.
Sae's lips slightly trembled in anger, but she still managed to keep her cool behavior.
— As much you want to take the case, I'm the prosecutor assigned for it, whenever you like or not. You're disturbing the clerk and causing a scene, being nothing more than a mere annoyance to everyone. Now, why don't you go back to the prosecutor's office and get back to work? I'm sure you do have some cases to attend to.
Maya was impressed with the Sae. Even if she was angry, she knew how to recompose herself and give an elegant answer. Godot was taken aback by that response.
— I'm an annoyance…? Ha! Perhaps you're the one who doesn't know your place. So, why don't you leave it that to the real adults here? I'm sure I can do a better job than you. Especially I don't need a mere prosecutor standing in my way, especially handling cases that they clearly can't handle.
— Excuse me? Are you implying…? — Sae asked.
— I'm sure a girl like you can't handle it, so why don't you do me a favor and—
— And what, Godot?
Maya turned surprised at Phoenix, who was watching the entire discussion. Gumshoe was a little far, scratching his head nervously.
— Fancy meeting you here, Trite. — Godot said.
— I can't say the same about you, Godot. Now, why are you here? — Phoenix replied dryly. Maya felt some coldness in his voice.
— Straight as always. I'm here to investigate the scene of the crime since I'm the prosecutor—
— You're not the prosecutor in charge. Ms. Niijima is the prosecutor assigned to the case. That said, I want to know why are you here. — Phoenix said interrupting Godot without any ceremony. The coffee-addicted prosecutor wasn't bothered by the man's behavior.
— Tch. Isn't that obvious? I'm the prosecutor in charge of this case, and I won't let some mere little girl who is playing to be a prosecutor meddle in the adult's work.
— For your information, Prosecutor Niijima is an excellent prosecutor, one of the best from Japan, and one of the most important international prosecutors in the field. She's more than capable to handle this case.
— You'll trust this case in the hands of someone like her? Hah. Don't make me laugh, Trite.
— I'm dead serious, Godot. She is the only one capable to deal with this case, and you're standing in her way.
— Oh, is that so… Well, that's not my problem.
— But will become yours if you don't stop with that behavior of yours… — Phoenix said taking a step further.
— Oh. Interesting. So, what are you going to do Trite? — Godot asked taking a step further as well.
— Well, perhaps I should relate your antics to the chief prosecutor. Maybe that should put you in your place.
Godot laughed.
— What's so funny? — Phoenix asked.
— Perhaps you should revaluate your vain threats, Trite. We both know that will lead nowhere.
— Maybe. But that is the civilized way to solve things. Because if you don't back down, Ms. Niijima will be happy to use you as her sparring dummy.
—?
Phoenix chuckled, surprising Maya.
— Oh, didn't you know? Well, you may find out eventually if you keep pushing yourself like that.
— Oh, is that your threat Trite? I thought you were here to threaten me, not treat me as a kid.
Then it happened. Phoenix's expression changed, becoming a cold serious frown. He stood rigid, posing at the full height, and said:
— Perhaps I didn't make myself clear, Godot. I said that is the civilized way to solve things, and I do prefer to stick with that way because if you irritate me enough, you'll wish if Ms. Niijima uses you as her sparring dummy. As for me, let's just say I'm far from someone with violent behavior but I can be violent when I need to. So, I will repeat myself again and ask: Why are you here? If you don't have anything better to do, then you should go and let us, and especially Ms. Niijima alone.
Maya blinked speechlessly and Gumshoe was looking at them with his jaw open. Who was that person and what he did do to the real Phoenix Wright? Maya looked at Sae who was stunned as well. Looking at Godot they saw his hand clenched in a fist, trembling in anger, as he keep a dangerous smile.
— As I said, I'm here to investigate…
— Yeah, you said that. And you said you're the prosecutor in charge. We know that.
— You know well. The reason is I'm here for you.
— I'm flattered, but I do believe you have your own cases to attend to.
— Well, it's my job to take you down. I live for that. I came from hell to have my victory against you.
— So that is? You're here to defeat me? Well, that was unexpected. It wasn't like I was expecting that. Now then, if you came here just for that, then you can leave. That's Ms. Niijima's case. And I trust her capacity to take this case.
— So, do you trust her? — Godot asked and Phoenix nodded in affirmation. — Ha! Why'd you trusts her? Or you're afraid of losing? That's why do you let an inexperienced lawyer take the lead? Perhaps you're counting on her incompetence to win this trial.
To Godot and Maya's surprise, Phoenix laughed out loud to the point he looked at Godot and couldn't help to laugh even more.
— What's so funny?! — The coffee-addicted prosecutor asked.
— Yeah, I don't get it. — Gumshoe said confused.
— Neither I. — Maya said.
— S… Ms. Niijima? Incompetent? Don't make me laugh, Godot. This is so absurd I simply couldn't help myself to laugh. — Phoenix laughed a little more before he could calm himself. — Ms. Niijima can be a lot of this, but I can assure you, incompetent she not, and she will never be. But I can't say the same about you.
— What!? What did you just say!?
— I said you are incompetent. And honestly, that is what you've shown to everyone since day one.
— What!?
— If I recall correctly, your first case was against Mr. Wright, correct? — Sae asked.
— Yes, now—
— If I remember correctly, it was a case about the stealing of the Sacred Urn of the Kurain village. — Sae continued not allowing Godot to talk. — The defendant was Mr. Ron DeLite, and he was suspected of stealing the Kurain Urn, a priceless treasure of the Fey clan. You let Mr. Wright defend and clear Mr. DeLite's name from that crime, only to pin him for another crime. But your second case was way more interesting. You had Mr. DeLite as the prime suspect in the murder of Kane Bullard, the CEO of a security company. The body was found inside the safe if I recall correctly. The defendant went into a set-up, caused the self-claimed Ace Detective Luke Atmey, who was simply lucky to catch Mr. DeLite in his first heist, and took advantage of that to use him as his pawn and his scapegoat until he was found by Mr. Wright, who not only managed to bring Luke Atmey to justice for both crimes, he avoided an unfair verdict.
— Hah. He just got lucky… If I wasn't there—
— Wright-san could've proved his innocence sooner.
— Wha—
— Your behavior, your stupid rules, and your dubious antics may have some effect on the court, but without that and a little competence on your part, he could have proven it sooner.
— What did you just say…!?
— You simply put pressure upon the judge with your stupid rule of having only 17th cups of coffee, worse, you simply rule the trial under insults and misdirection to confuse the judge and have your victory. Of course, I do admit Mr. Wright had help, but he could carry the trial by himself, unlike you.
— You…
— Worse was the fact you didn't manage to link Mr. DeLite with his previous crimes, since you let him go with the double jeopardy, freeing a man who is clearly not that innocent. Not only that, there was a recent case of a phony, correct? — Sae asked, looking at the detective.
— Yes. It was the case of a phony of Mr. Wright. — Gumshoe said.
— I had something interesting. You knew Furio Tigre was passing by Mr. Wright on the initial trial, you knew it and let an innocent woman get convicted anyway, as that it doesn't matter, tarnishing the names of Mr. Wright and Ms. Bryde. If that isn't incompetence, I don't know what is it.
— You dammed—
— You've heard her. You're far from a competent prosecutor, and even your antics and behavior are very questionable, Godot. You're not a reliable prosecutor. — Phoenix said standing between Godot and Sae. — Now, get out, or I'll denunciate your attitudes toward Ms. Niijima to the chief prosecutor.
Godot stood still as a stone, appearing to be calm as he was thinking of how to answer that when they heard someone saying:
— I knew you might be here, Wright.
Surprising everyone, Edgeworth came from nowhere, carrying some files with him.
— Edgeworth. It's good to see you again. — Phoenix said.
— Likewise. Prosecutor Niijima.
— Edgeworth-san. — Sae said bowing to him. Godot flicked his tongue.
— So, the Trite's friend is here. So, why are you here, amigo? — Godot asked annoyed.
— You must be the famous Godot everyone is talking about. And I'm not your friend.
— I thought you knew him, Mr. Edgeworth. — Maya commented.
— That was a lie of Luke Atmey, remember? — Phoenix said.
— Oh, right…
— What…? It doesn't matter…
Edgeworth gave the files to Godot, who promptly started to read them.
— These are the request files for the substitution of prosecutors for the ambassador case.
— I'm sure the chief prosecutor made the right choice.
— About that, the chief prosecutor has a message for you.
— What is it? Spill it.
— Your request has been refused. You're not allowed to take this case, nor to get involved in the case in any matter.
— What!? Why—
— This case has caught the attention of the entire media, not only that, the eyes of every citizen in Japan are entirely focused on this case. The chief prosecutor in charge has a huge pressure over his shoulders, especially with the Japanese embassy and the entire country, since their ambassador to the United States was arrested for murdering a member of the embassy. They simply don't want anyone except for Ms. Niijima to take the case.
— The chief prosecutor will let me take the case instead of a person like—
— I do suggest you respect Ms. Niijima. — Phoenix warned in a calm tone, surprising even Edgeworth. — Or do I need to remind you of all the trouble you had caused the hotel clerk?
— What did you do Prosecutor Godot? — Edgeworth asked.
— Nothing. Trite is just bluffing as always. — Godot rebutted.
— Well, I can see that's not the case. — The former Demon Prosecutor said, looking at the clerk and Phoenix and Sae. — Something tells me you've more than disturbed the hotel staff, and if I find anything, I'll denunciate you to Chief Prosecutor for your antics.
— Edgeworth, as much I appreciate your concern…
— I'm not concerned about you Wright. — Edgeworth said interrupting Phoenix.
— I know, let me finish. As I was saying, as much I appreciate your concern towards Ms. Niijima, what will be not necessary, isn't that right, Godot?
Godot gritted his teeth and stared furiously at the spiked-haired attorney.
— Trite…!
— Godot. As I said before if you continue that, you don't need to worry about me informing your behavior to Chief Prosecutor, nor to become the sparring dummy of Ms. Niijima. You should worry about what I can do with you if you don't stop with that attitude of yours.
Godot become even more furious and Edgeworth blinked surprised.
— Trite… You…
— Godot. Or do you get out on your own, or I'll do it myself. Your choice.
Godot turned away, grunting in anger.
— You're lucky, Trite. This is not over yet.
— I know that. For now, you better let things as they are. We solve our differences later.
— Hmph! I'll keep an eye on this case. I just don't trust you both.
— Stay away from the case. It's not yours and we don't need a third party disturbing our investigation. — Sae said.
— Tsk. That is something I will determine. I see you later, Trite.
Godot left the hotel and Phoenix turned at Sae.
— Ms. Niijima, I'm so sorry about that.
— It's okay. It wasn't the first time I had to deal with that, and it will not be the last. — She said calm and collected as ever.
— Still, I feel responsible for what had happened to you. We may have our issues but you shouldn't be involved in such a personal thing.
— You worry too much. It's okay, although you don't need to defend me. I can defend myself well.
— I know, but I don't have to do that. But I want to. I can't simply watch quietly seeing him insulting anyone because of me, especially you.
Sae smiled.
— Well, I'm flattered. You truly are a gentleman, Mr. Wright. — Sae said. Phoenix gave his usual huge grin.
— Thank you, but I assure you it was nothing.
— If you saying so… — Sae turned at Edgeworth. — Edgeworth-san, you're not here just because of Godot-san's request, right?
Edgeworth nodded and looked at Sae.
— Ms. Niijima, the Chief Prosecutor has a message for you. He says: "I do expect you can prove the defendant's guilt. I'm sure you have a lot of pressure over your shoulders, but I do expect that doesn't affect your performance."
— That's all?
— Yes.
— Then tell the Chief Prosecutor: "Do not worry about it. I'll do my job, aside from my personal beliefs. If I was him, I should worry about securing the information and avoiding any leaks to the press. The last thing we need to do is to deal with the intromission of the media into this case. Got it?" That's my message for him.
Edgeworth nodded his head in affirmative.
— Very well.
Phoenix looked at Edgeworth and commented:
— It's truly a surprise to see you here, Edgeworth. I thought you were in Europe, taking several cases.
— I was until I was called by the Chief Prosecutor to research and investigate the ambassador. But I do never expect to see Ms. Niijima again.
— Do you know her, sir? — Gumshoe asked.
— She's one of the best prosecutors I know, and she faced cases that were considered impossible and won. She's more than capable to handle this case. — Edgeworth replied.
— Nick said almost the same thing… — Maya commented.
— Is that so? Well, it's quite obvious, considering they faced each other in court before.
— WWWWHHHHAAATTT!? — Maya and Gumshoe yelled surprised.
— Hey! I'm literally at your side, Maya. You don't need to deafen me. — Phoenix exclaimed irritated. — Yes, I have fought against Ms. Niijima before. There is any problem with that? — He asked.
— No… It's not a problem… — Maya said pouting. Phoenix managed to keep a stern face, as much as he wanted to laugh at Maya's attitude.
— Well, it seems you really haven't told them.
— That was a classified case, so I can't simply tell you.
— Yeah, right. Tell another story, Nick.
— Actually, that's true. It was a serious case involving a murder in the Japanese embassy as well. I requested Wright to defend the person in question.
— It was a horrible case; I have to say. Our culprit was very clever, although he wasn't that clever to not see the trail he left and the inconsistencies in the witness's testimony. I was very lucky to solve that case, actually, we were very lucky to solve the case, wouldn't you agree Ms. Niijima? I dare to say it was a miracle.
Sae smiled.
— As much as I say that was an exaggeration on your part, I do agree we were lucky. But it wasn't a miracle itself.
— It was. We came out of that alive and without any wounds. That I call a miracle.
— When you say that, I have to agree. We almost died during those three days.
— WWHHHHAAAATTTTT!? — Maya and Gumshoe yelled again in pure surprise.
— Detective, I'm literally at your side, so there's no need to deafen me. — Edgeworth exclaimed furiously, massaging his right ear. — I do remember that well. It was a tough case.
— Wait a minute, if you were sir, why don't you become the prosecution in charge? — Gumshoe asked.
— I was one of the witnesses in that case. I simply can't become the prosecutor in charge. — Edgeworth explained. — Now when I think about it, this case resembles that case as well.
— When you said that, it makes sense. There are a lot of similarities with that case as well. — Phoenix commented thoughtfully. — Better take a look at the file of that case, just in case.
— I should do the same too, just in case. Is that all the business you have with me, Edgeworth-san?
— Yes, I do believe that's all, Ms. Niijima.
— Very well. — Sae said and smiled. — Well, is time for me to go. I still need to interrogate the witnesses.
— I see.
— Good luck with the ambassador, Mr. Wright. He's not an easy person to talk to, nor to deal with.
— I know. I heard the rumors at the embassy. Well, I should go as well. Maya, let's go.
— …
— Maya!
— What!?
— We have to go, we need to interrogate the ambassador, remember? — Phoenix said, walking towards the exit. — What are you waiting for? Let's go.
— R-Right!
Maya followed Phoenix silently. She never expected for him to act like that, to defend someone so fiercely outside the court, especially against Godot who was someone who simply managed to put him down and to insult with ease the poor defense attorney, and now the same Godot was speechless, unable to give a comeback. And all of that was for Prosecutor Niijima, a prosecutor Phoenix have only known in a previous case and that's all, a person he barely knows. She couldn't understand why Phoenix had done that, and why does he care about a total stranger. As much as she was proud of him, she felt something inside her blooming, a bad feeling about that woman. Maya never felt something like that before, but she was sure that was something she simply couldn't ignore.
— Nick! Wait! — Maya yelled trying to keep pace with the defense attorney.
—
Detention Center.
Visitor Room.
Midday.
—
— So, what type of person is our client? — Maya asked.
— A quiet one. He only talks the necessary. He's a punctual man.
— Did you talk with him before?
— Kind of. He heard of me and requested my services. That's all I can say…
Maya stood quiet, trying to process that information. If that was true, then something was off. Why someone will call Phoenix to take such an important case in the first place? Perhaps it was because of his history… Maybe not. As much as Phoenix has defeated the god of the prosecutors, Manfred von Karma, that itself was restrained to the United States. Perhaps it was known in the entire world, but she doubted someone like the ambassador will know about it. Perhaps it was someone who told the ambassador about him. As much as Maya thinks about it, it makes even less sense about how they managed to have such an important client.
They waited for five minutes until their client appeared, being escorted by two guards. He was wearing an expensive business suit and wearing glasses. His hair was slicked back and his glance was stern and frigid. Maya trembled in his presence.
— My name is Masahiro Ken. It's a pleasure to meet you Ms…
— Fey. Maya Fey.
— I'm Phoenix Wright. We've talked by phone.
— Yes, I remember you, Wright-san.
— Masahiro-san, we've investigated your room. We're here to disclose to you the results of our investigation.
— I see.
— Nick. May I ask you something?
— Go ahead.
— Is Masahiro his name?
— His surname. In Asian countries, they say the family name before their first name.
— So, his name is Ken… Wait, does that…
— No. Sae is the first name of Prosecutor Niijima.
— I see…
— Prosecutor Niijima…?
— Yes. She was the one assigned to prosecute your case.
— I see. Well, I will tell you everything I know and it's within my reach.
— Good. Tell me more about that day.
— I was investigating a lead of a shady operation in Los Angeles. As an ambassador of Japan, we've some duties I do call… risky at least.
— What do you mean…? — Maya asked.
— Well, our country is dealing with some real issues right now. Cases of severe corruption, cases of psychotic breakdowns, and mental shutdowns. Not to mention…
— The Phantom Thieves of Hearts. — Phoenix completed the sentence.
— Oh, have you heard about it?
— It was quite the ruckus caused by them. Everyone heard about them.
— Well, I didn't know it. — Maya said.
— Almost everyone. — Phoenix corrected himself.
— That's a lightly way to put it. They may be infamous, but they've done more for our country than several people I know. To not say, almost everyone I know. — Masahiro said.
— That's true.
— Nick, who are the Phantom Thieves of Hearts? They are like Mask DeMasque — Maya asked thoughtfully.
— No. They are a group that steals people's hearts.
— Like, literally!? — She asked in disbelief.
— No, no… Not literally. They cause a change of heart in the people. Not only that, their targets confess their crimes, no matter who are. But they not only extend that to criminals. Bad people who have distorted desires were also their target.
— So, they're basically a bunch of people who convince people to change their ways.
— That's something we'd not know. — Said Masahiro.
— What!? Why you're…
— Let me explain. Their methods are unknown. Even I don't have a clear idea about that.
— Wait, so…!
— Yes. They truly are a mystery. Not only that, they've called the attention of the entire country to that.
— In other words… They are merely now an urban legend.
— As a matter of fact, yes and no. They did make the change in our country. I remember well since it's quite recently.
— The case of Masayoshi Shido. — Phoenix said.
— He was quite the criminal. He used some type of cognitive—whatsoever technology to ascend in the political world. He was planning to steer the country as the Prime Minister and do whatever he wanted to. To have an idea, with that method he managed to kill anyone on his way and even use that to expose some corruption in our country only to put his minions in power. Including the researcher of that technology.
— That's horrible! — Maya exclaimed.
— But thanks to the Phantom Thieves they managed to save us. At least, that's what the public believes, and so do I.
— What do you mean…? They're heroes as far as I can hear.
— That's not what the police think. I've heard every single authority went after them. It was a nightmare the hunting of them. They're nowhere to be found, and they have disappeared out of the blue.
— So, no one knows where they are?
— No one. Which is odd…
— Why…?
— Because when the supposed leader of the Phantom Thieves testified about Masayoshi Shido, there was one person who actually knew about it. And it was the prosecution in charge of that case.
— Wh-What!?
— That's only a rumor, but that was enough to convict him for the rest of his life. Now back to our business. I was researching a smuggling ring connected to Masayoshi Shido.
— So, that's connected to him somehow… *sigh* That'll be a hell of a headache.
— What do you mean, Nick?
— That smuggling ring is connected somehow with the Yakuza, correct?
— It seems so.
— So, all the files are probably in the best case, stored at the databank of Japan's Police Department.
— Nick, I don't see…
— They're written in Japanese. And get access to them translated will take a while.
— Oh… So…
— It seems we'll need some help to get them.
— I guess you'll need the help of Prosecutor Niijima. She was the one in charge of Shido's case.
— Prosecutor Niijima…
Maya didn't like that for some reason, that thought was enough to make the girl frown angrily. Luckily enough, neither Masahiro nor Phoenix had noticed since both were focused in find a way to get the files.
— Wait. The Interpol is on this case, correct? So we can request to access the files if that's the case.
— Yes, they are on the trail of that smuggling ring for a long time. Perhaps their files will be enough.
— Okay. I will request the files from them. Maya.
— Yes, Nick! — She exclaimed as she was snapped out of her thoughts.
— We need to go to the prosecutor's office. Can you call Edgeworth to search the files of Shido's case? I will call Prosecutor Niijima to request the files about his case as well.
— Oh… Okay…
— Thanks, Maya. You're a lifesaver. About the incident, can you tell me what happened the last night?
— Of course. The victim and I are discussing the smuggling ring Masayoshi Shido had built. We were having a calm conversation when he suddenly stood up and started to suffocate. He tried to breathe without success until he fell to the ground.
— We were at the crime scene. It seems like a fight happened there.
— He was desperately looking for something. I don't know what is it, but I know it's something he always carries with him since he looked for his luggage.
— I see. So that scene…
— Was him struggling for air. He dropped a few things over the way.
— So, you do never engage against the victim.
— Why'd I will fight against him? He was one of the trustworthy agents I had under my disposal.
— What!? — Maya exclaimed surprised.
— Can you tell me more about him? — Phoenix asked.
— Of course. His name has Akiho Hanamura. He's an agent of Interpol and an agent of Tokyo SIU. — Masahiro replied.
— The Special Investigation Unit. The same unit as Ms. Niijima. — Phoenix noted.
— Yes. He was one of the few persons who haven't tainted himself into the corruption of the SIU, alongside Ms. Niijima. He was an incredible agent and investigator. He was on the trail of the smuggling ring for… Three years, I do believe.
— Three years… It was almost the same time…
— Yes. You could say it was a tough case, but he had found some crucial evidence. However, I do believe that evidence is no longer in my paste, at least that's what I've heard from Ms. Niijima before you come here.
— Prosecutor Niijima noticed the absence of a few documents. We were there when she checked your paste.
— So, someone has taken it, or perhaps…
— How are these files?
— These files aren't physical. They are stored in a pen drive.
— What is a pen drive? — Maya asked confused.
— A small drive, usually smaller than a pen. They're good to carry large amounts of information. — Masahiro explained.
— And how I do use this drive?
— Usually, you connect that drive to a computer to have access to the drive.
— Really!? Then, why in our last case the MC Screwdriver Virus was in a CD? Isn't easier to carry in a pen drive?!
— It's MC Bomber, Maya. — Phoenix corrected. — And it was in a Bluray Disc the virus.
— And CD? Really? Well, who I am to complain? People in Japan still use DVDs and Bluray… Now, back to business. That pen drive is conclusive evidence of Masayoshi Shido's involvement in the illegal world. But without it…
— I see… One more question. On the day of the death of Hanamura-san, did you have done anything to him? — Phoenix asked holding his Magatama.
— I only have called the emergency. He was one of the investigators of my case. I don't have a reason to kill him.
Phoenix and Maya didn't see any Psyche-Locks, which was a good signal.
— I see. Thank you for your time. — Phoenix said bowing to Masahiro who only bowed back in respect.
— Thank you for representing me in this case. I trust my life in your capable hands.
