A continuation of the 10-108 Officer down story. No, this is not going to solve your questions. If anything, it's going to make it worse. This AU just doesn't seem to want to give you, or me, any closure. I look forward to your speculations in the comments.

Mike Wolford approached the home of Vivian Wilde. He was in his dress uniform, though not intentionally for this, it was also appropriate that he was. Sadly, though he had not heard anything since Chief Bogo had called him, he knew that the chances of the reason he was there surviving were low. Which was why he was there. He really liked the older vixen, having visited a few times with Nick, and meeting her at other events as well. Something that tore at his heart as he knocked on the door.
The door opened and Vivian Wilde looked up at him with a cold and pained look. "Mike… He is dead or will be soon, right?"
Mike found he could not meet her eyes. "I only know that they were able to stabilize him, but only because of Judy and some leopard they both apparently knew who is a surgeon. I'm here to escort you to the hospital. They refused to talk to or listen to Judy, ignoring the power of attorney and all that."
Vivian nodded sadly, closing the door and locking it behind her. "Where is Judy?"
Mike led her to the Wolford pack limo he had arrived in. "I don't know. Last word I got was that she had left the precinct after completing her reports. I guess after Bogo got there and at least got some action taken to stabilize him, she went and did her reports. I haven't heard anything since, though Lizz is currently hunting for her."
Vivian climbed into the Limo followed by Mike. "A Pack limo? Won't that create questions?"
Mike shook her head. "Mom actually required it. I was in uniform for a pack function when the call from Bogo came in. I'm here escorting you as Designate as much as my status as an officer, per Bogo and mom."
"Wow. Well, okay then."
They rode in silence to the hospital. Mike exited and glaring down at the reporters outside the hospital entrance, causing them to part. He then quickly ushered Vivian through, shock at a vixen getting out of a pack limo causing an odd quiet before shouted questions sprang up as they got to the doors.
Mike saw her through the doors before turning. "There will be no statement, ZPD or Pack, at this time. I'll also note that you are all in violation of at least four different laws. Disperse now, because if you are still here blocking any entrance to this hospital by the time the patrol I am calling gets here, you will be arrested." Turning his back to them he followed Vivian into the hospital.
A few minutes later in the ICU Vivian was getting an update with Bogo and Mike standing guard. Mike got a text as they waited quietly. Nodding he looked up at Bogo and said one word. "Lizz."
Bogo nodded in response. Once Vivian was in the room looking over what was likely soon to be formerly her son, Mike turned to Bogo. "Lizz has Hopps."
Neither had noticed Vivian leave the room. "And where is my daughter in law? Why again is she not here?"
Bogo looked down with a deep frown. "Despite everything else and all the legal paperwork, the hospital administration and most of the staff refused to work on him at all. Their friend has stepped in, and that is the only reason he has gotten any care at all. I promise that charges will be brought. However, there is little we can do at this point. They refused to listen to Hopps. She was trying to offer up ways to get the blood they need to do the surgery. I didn't hear what she said. I was too busy letting the administration know that they can expect criminal charges.
I'm not sure if that helped or hurt the situation, but it was all I could do to keep Hopps from just arresting mammals."
Vivian nodded, turning back towards the room before stopping and looking back. "Just so you know, in case you don't. If he dies, she will follow and there is nothing any of us can do. They have two kits that the law demands be put down like animals. They're safe, thankfully. However, neither of them were able to even mark them, or see them. They don't even know what their kits look like, because of those laws. It's why they both got themselves fixed. So, if he dies, I suggest you plan two funerals, not one."
With that Vivian returned to Nick's side. Bogo turned to Mike whose ears were flat. "Did you know this."
Mike nodded. "I did. Lizz and I can be open only because it's Pack law. But like with Nick and Judy, if we were to have young, the law would, if a nasty enough prosecutor went after us, require that those pups be murdered. We are therefore both on control, and don't have sex when we know she is on cycle. Which really hurts, to be honest. We tried using condoms, but they break too often to be safe. The odds may be long, but the genetic tests confirm it could happen."
Bogo snorted. "I understand that may have happened even fifty years ago, but…"
Mike cut him of with an angry snorted growl. "Happened last year. Judy tried to charge the officer with murder, which it was in my opinion. Shot and killed four kits, and the parents. Prosecutors office refused to take the charges because the law is on the books and ruled still valid by the high court four years ago. She filed the complaint with you. Officer out of P5. Wasn't part of Bellwethers group, but was a sympathizer. Open about it too. The couple was a spring buck and a cheetah. She was pregnant."
Bogo looked at Mike in absolute horror. "What happened?"
"You passed the complaint to the review board. They rejected it. He's still on the force, but stuck at a desk because no one will partner with him now. Can't exactly make too much noise, or someone will get suspicious. Again, We've known about WildeHopps for years. Lizz and I helped hide her pregnancy. We covered their shifts for a month. The relationship itself is even marginally illegal, but won't be prosecuted. Add young into the mix, and you can bet there are prosecutors out there that will gleefully push the case."
Bogo physically recoiled. "Okay… You need to stay here. Keep me informed. I need to make some phone calls." Mike just nodded and turned away, looking through the window at the foxes in the small room. Pain written over every hair on his body, ears flat, tail down.

Stepping into an empty room, Bogo closed the door and pulled out his phone. A few moments later it picked up. "Pat…"
"What's up sweat buns? You don't normally call me during the day? Is something wrong?"
"Pat. I need to ask some questions, and I need you to answer me directly."
"Okay…" The concern in his mates voice was clear.
"Is it true there was a case last year that the prosecutor's office refused to pursue. An officer from P5 shot and killed a couple and their four kits, the female pregnant with a fifth. This because they were interspecies, springbok and cheetah. The kits being hybrids."
A deep sigh was her first answer and his heart sank. "Yes. Hopps actually tried to push that. I think she filed a complaint, but the review board rejected the complaint because he was acting well within his rights as an officer and the law. If anything. Any of your officers that don't act that way could be charged. That law actually has a section that requires prosecution of officers that fail to pursue the law. The Wolford Pack has a lawsuit at the Supreme Court, arguments are next month, to overturn the law. They've got a good case, but too little too late for anyone that gets killed between now and then."
"By the ancients. Wilde is in the hospital. We barely got them to give him treatment at all. Now I understand why he takes a few days off to go to Bunnyburrow with Hopps every other month. I suspect one of the doctors in his family looks after him."
"Her sister, Angelie. I helped them draw up the paperwork for their powers of attorney and such. I'm guessing that the hospital refused to recognize it."
"Yeah… All but threw her out. Nick's mother is here. Said that I should be planning two funerals."
Another sad sigh came over the phone. "Yeah. If he dies, she won't last long. Probably go home, play with the kits one last time, knowing their kits are in the group somewhere, then curl up and die. I suggest you call her parents and let them know what is going on so they can prepare. I appreciate the call, despite the news. The legal documents allow me to file a suit, even if they are both deceased. The money will go into a trust and foundation. I can assign it out after the kits are old enough to have aged out of the law that would have them murdered."
Bogo groaned. "Okay. Do that. I… I guess I didn't want to know."
"It's normally only precincts like 5 that have mammals in them that still enforce these laws. With any luck the Pack will have them voided soon. Until then, now that you know."
"Yeah, I have a presentation to make in the morning. I love you."
"I love you more. This is why our kitten got himself fixed. It's why he stopped pushing for them to be open. He didn't know the risk and danger he was putting them in."
"Okay. Give him a kiss for me. I will be late, if I make it home at all tonight."
"Understood."
With that, the call ended and Bogo leaned against the wall, suddenly exhausted. His statement to his wife was true. Thinking it through, he figured he didn't want to know. Given how he was feeling. He knew that he probably ignored the laws in question because he couldn't conceive of any mammal following through on them. There was a lot to do.
Stepping out of the room he was using, he checked and found no changes. Mike had found himself a chair, and Nick's mother was still in the room with him. He noticed her take a small yarn ball from a bag she pulled from her purse and place it on Nick's chest. To his surprise, Nick's heart rate slowed.
Stepping up to Mike. "Uhm… What is that?" Indicating the ball.
Mike looked over and smiled sadly. "Scent ball. Judy probably marked it and expecting the worst, like this, gave it to Vivian to hold in a sealed bag or container. That way, she'd have a way even if they refused to let Nick in, to get her scent to him. It'll probably help him last a few extra hours. If it wasn't too late."
"His heart rate visibly slowed."
Mike nodded. "Good. Hopefully it is enough. I've gotten texts from a few mammals. Judy showed up at the 10-7. She was really out of it. Took several shots of Whisky like it was nothing before Lizz got there. There are actually mammals trying to find the blood for Nick to get his surgery. One is in Flash's car right now heading for a town called Foxenburg or something like that. Fox heavy town, and they have blood. No telling if they'll get there and back in time though. It's four hundred miles. That said, I already called it in. Word is out. Flash will not be stopped."
Bogo nodded. "That's good."
"Some others are trying to get the bloodmobile out and into HappyTown. Others are hunting the EMT that refused to treat Nick. I just hope it is not all too little too late."
Bogo nodded. "I agree. Apparently Pat is the one that helped them set up all their legal docs. Even including the ability for her to file suit on their behalf. Crazy that they needed to go that far."
Mike nodded and then frowned. "Boss." Indicating the room Bogo had just stepped out of. A moment later, Mike pulled a small device from a pocket and activated it. "Okay. Something you need to understand. Will Judy die if Nick does. Yes. One hundred percent. There is no question about it. However… There is another thing you need to know. It's why they are the rulers of the sparring ring. Nick was Helketta. He is the master that they never found during the purge. Judy is Cheth and also master herself. There is a less than zero chance that if he dies, she will go on a rampage, and she has the skills for it. It will be a bloodbath.
The point here is this. You, sir. You need to consider this and if he dies. It may be in the best interests of everyone if she is killed. She'd probably welcome it. I know you have contacts in the military. A nice sniper shot from a few thousand meters after she gets a chance to play with the kits."
Bogo took a large step back. "I am going to pretend you didn't say that."
Mike shrugged. "Do what you want. This entire situation is completed fucked. Lizz and I don't have the skills, and Judy's teacher is too far away. Though I will call her when I get relieved. I'll let you know if I hear anything about the blood."
With that Mike turned off the device and left a completely shell shocked Bogo to process the new information he had just learned.

After several minutes, Chief Adrian Bogo shook himself. Despite his years of service in the ZPD. From the trenches of patrol, the species riots of the predator and prey reformation era and passing of true equal rights for all mammals. Surviving and helping put down the Prey Supremacy Front or PSF. Or so they thought until they dove deep into Bellwether's file. Turned out she was the descendant of PSF survivors.
Even with his many years of service as a division captain, station chief, and now a decade plus as chief of the ZPD. None of it prepared him for the absolute shit storm that was about to befall the city. Even if Wolford was wrong, and Hopps didn't go nuclear on the city. The targeted shooting of Wilde. They were both the target. He knew it, only needing to confirm it once they could interrogate the shooters.
Still, he could freak out about what he'd learned later. Much later. Maybe after he retired. In the meantime. He had another call to make. Pulling out his phone, Bogo gave himself another shake. He could worry about assasin trained officers later.
Dialing a number he had in his personal phone after a previous incident where both Nick and Judy were in the hospital. The Hopps were scary rabbits, and Judy was that, and effectively fearless.
The line picked up and the concerned voice of Bonnie Hopps greeted him. "Chief Bogo. Before I panic. Please explain why you are calling. Did something happen to Judy?"
Bogo sighed. "As far as I am aware, your daughter is fine and in the care of her friend, Elizabeth Fangmeyer. For reasons I don't fully understand, I have had multiple mammals advise me to call you."
Bonnie interjected. "Is he dead?"
"What?"
"Nicholas. Is he dead?"
The steel in the rabbits voice concerned him. "No. At the moment, Officer Wilde is in a coma. However, he needs surgery and there isn't sufficient blood to do it. There have been a few revelations today, some of which I expect may result in charges against doctors at this hospital."
Bonnie sighed sadly. He could almost feel it through the phone, and he could definitely hear it. "What are his chances? I need to know if we need to start funeral arrangements."
Bogo shook his head slowly with another tired sigh. "According to the leopard surgeon that is a friend of theirs, and the only real reason he is being treated at all, if they don't get the blood and do the surgery by morning, he will likely expire by the end of the day tomorrow. There are some efforts to obtain the blood, but they rely on some serious hail mary efforts.
Now, can you please explain why everyone seems to think I am about to lose two officers? Only one is injured. Yet everyone seems to think your daughter is as good as dead. Please explain to me why that is? Why my own officers are telling me that I need to plan two funerals?"
Bonnie gave a sigh that sounded truly exhausted. "Chief… Rabbits and foxes and not nearly as different as many think. In fact were more alike than most of us want to admit or acknowledge. This includes the fact that we play the field in finding a mate, but once we do. That's it. It is for life. One and done, as Nick and Judy put it. Many of us bond to our mate in a deep and instinctual way that can, and often does, result in death by a broken heart.
We call it the bunny bond. Foxes call it imprinting. The results are the same. Unless there are kits, the survivor rarely lasts long. Nick and Judy are bonded like this. And before you say it. They've have not seen their kits since a few seconds after birth. They have no connection with them, and so no way for that bond to help them overcome the loss of their mate.
So, if he passes. Just text me that fact. I expect if he does die. Judy will appear here at the burrow to play with the fluffle, knowing her kits are in there somewhere. Then she'll probably lay on his grave and never get up again."
"I see… Thank you for the explanation. I need to check on things."
"Thank you for calling." The call ended and Bogo allowed himself a final tired sigh before pulling himself together and exiting the room.
Stepping into the room, Vivian looked up. "Chief?"
"How is he?"
Vivian looked at her son then back to the buffalo. "He's strong, but he is slipping away. According to the surgeon, if they can't do the surgery within the next few hours, it'll likely be too late."
"I've advised the Hopps. They seem to be anticipating losing her if he goes."
Vivian nodded. "That is what I would expect as well." Wiping a tear. "After everything. She brought him back to me. I got to see him achieve so much. To be the fox I knew he could be. What hurts, truly, is that I'll never get to meet my grand kits. That they never got to know their kits, all in order to protect them from an unjust and barbaric, evil law. And now. I'm going to lose them both."
Vivian waved off Bogo's clear struggle for a response. "I don't expect anything from you, Chief. I'm sorry to dump that all on you. I… Like I said… It looks like, barring some miracle, that I'm going to lose my son and the mammal that brought him back to me, loved him, gave him kits, and did so much else. I got a few years with them. Years with my Nicky I didn't think I'd get. I should be grateful. But I just can't feel that right now."
Bogo hung his head. "I truly wish I could do something to help. I can only promise that I will do all in my power to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else. The treatment, or lack thereof, he received is unconscionable. These laws… They are evil, and I promise to eliminate any officers from the force that would even consider acting on them."
Vivian nodded. "Than you are doing all we can hope for."
Bogo left the room, finding Grozoli having relieved Wolford. "Sergeant."
"Chief. Last word is that some county sheriff blocked the road, so Flash has been delayed. Created a multi mile traffic jam on a two lane highway. Also getting reports that officers out of P5 are trying to blockade Happytown and prevent anyone in or out. Including the blood mobile. Wolford has grabbed a group of officers and is trying to break the blockage."
Bogo snorted angrily. "Contact him on his personal. He is to get the road clear, and arrest the officers, but at the very least, identity them."
Grozoli nodded. "Yes sir."
Bogo entered the same room again. Pulling out his phone he dialed the chief of P5. The line picked up and Bogo plowed through the cheerful greeting. "Shut it, Simmons. You have P5 officers trying to blockade Happytown and prevent anyone from moving in or out of the area. You will order your officers to stand down, as orders have already been given to arrest them if needed. If I find out that they're acting under your orders, you may want to consider resigning before I can fire you."
There was a long pause. "Uhm… I sent them there under your orders. Sir."
"How did you receive those orders?"
"Email. Some sort of training exercise."
Bogo growled. "Not from me. That was faked. They're preventing the collection of fox blood needed to save officer Wilde's life. Preserve that email as evidence, and you better be telling me the truth."
"Fuck. Wilde? Damn. What about Hopps?"
"Fine, for now."
"Right." There was some slamming and then yelling off the phone but clearly heard. "Hendriks! Recall those sent to Happytown. Now!"
The yelled response sent a flare of anger through Bogo. "They won't listen. The fox dies and both of them do! We're doing the city and the world a favor."
The line then disconnected with the sound of a struggle. Bogo had a sudden shiver of terror run down his spine. This was coordinated with officers within the ZPD. It was Bellwether, but worse. It would also be what sets Hopps on the warpath Wolford had warned him of if she found out.
Bogo looked at the wall, seeing in his mind the fox on the bed, barely hanging onto life, and the vixen watching over him, just waiting for him to pass and lose both her son and daughter in law. That's what Hopps was, legal marriage or not.
He also realized as he looked down at his phone and the number he had pulled up, that it was him that did it. That it was him that was about to unleash hell upon his city, for its own good.
A lump in his throat, knowing what he was about to unleash, Adrian Adonis Bogo, Chief of the Zootopia Police Department, hit dial.
