When they rode out into the heavy rain, she kept her eyes on the two brothers occasionally glancing at the others. Ignoring the conversations around her even when Gandalf spoke to Bilbo about wizards. She was cold but the blanket that Bilbo had given her kept her dry at the very least. She could hear Fili and Kili talking again, she hated eavesdropping but when she heard her name, she got curious.
"So, are you going to explain why you can't seem to keep your eyes off of Bryn?" Kili asked Fili in hushed tones.
"There's nothing to tell Kee, I…" But Fili really had no explanation.
"Well alright then if, you're sure." Kili conceded.
Nothing to tell? I guess Fili didn't feel what she thought she was feeling. Maybe she shouldn't think too much on it. After all they hadn't known each other that long. Bryn was saddened by what Fili said, it hurt in her chest. After some thought she laid her head against Cloud and wished she hadn't overheard it at all.
"Miss Bryn?"
"Oh? Yes Ori?"
"Are you alright maybe you'd like to have Oin look at you?" he asked concerned.
"That's alright Ori, I just didn't sleep to well last night." She told him as she rubbed her hands together to keep warm.
"Bryn, would you like to wear my gloves?" Ori offered as he started to take his off.
"No thank you, I wouldn't want you to be cold." She smiled at his gesture, but politely refused.
"I can make you a pair if you'd like?" When he said this his brothers along with Fili and Kili stopped and watched.
"You knit?" she asked simply.
"Yes…" He was hesitant admitting most male dwarves found him odd. His brothers watching and waited to see her reaction.
"That's amazing do you think you could show me how?" Bryn asked.
Dori smiled at the girl happy to know that she wasn't judgmental about it. Nori seemed to also relax at the thought. Fili looked upset at the transaction and Kili smirked until he saw his brother's twisted face. Kili knew something was up he just hadn't figured it out. Bryn had just unknowingly won over a part of the group.
"Of course, miss Bryn." He blushed and moved back to where his brothers were.
Happy that she was going to learn how to knit she couldn't help but smile. Remembering back to how her mother used to knit all the time. Her mother used to offer to teach her but she was never interested until it was too late. Frowning at the thought she shook her head and focused on the present. Noticing that they still had some ways to go she tried her best to stop the chattering of her teeth but this did not go unnoticed.
Without looking at her Fili had taken off his jacket and threw it up on her lap. He didn't look at her he simply said. "Put it on."
Blushing while astonishingly obeying his orders she pulled it over her blanket and pulled it to her face. Smiling to herself, it smelt like him. Watching him from under his coat she felt a strange sensation in her stomach. Grabbing her stomach hoping that the feeling would ease but it didn't. Instead she observed him and noticed how his beads in his hair would clink together every other step his pony took.
"Bryn?" Kili called almost randomly if she had not seen the look on Fili's face. He looked annoyed at the very least and she wanted to giggle at the thought.
"Yes Kili?"
"May I call you kurkaruke?" Everyone turned at this, even Thorin which Kili ignored but made Bryn uncomfortable.
"Umm, I suppose. But what does it mean?" she asked her face now a permanent red, she had expected him to ask about Fili.
"I suppose I will tell you when we reach Erebor." Thorin lost interest after hearing him not explain. Along with all the others except Fili who looked grumpy and had his eyes narrowed at his brother.
"Kili that's a long time to wait." She whined a bit, which he did not reply only gave her a smirk. What was he up to she thought to herself?
"Nadadith! Honestly, I don't know what to do with you sometimes." Fili told Kili and went on to mumble to himself. (Means brother that is younger)
Bryn watched the two brothers with interest they were entertaining most of the time in all her years she never knew what dwarves were like. She was raised in a human village; she knew very little about her own kind. Lost in her own thoughts she hadn't realized they stopped and toppled over her horse and fell into Fili's lap. When she landed on top of Fili who really saw her and caught her. Bryn looked over and into Fili's eyes and seemed lost for words she cursed under her breath; she couldn't believe her luck.
Fili didn't know what to do with Bryn in his arms and Bryn seemed to be just as clueless as they stared at each other. Licking her dry lips, she looked down into Fili's gorgeous blue eyes. His eyes seemed to be trained onto her lips then up into her eyes, they were light gray and Fili knew then there was no mistaking that Bryn was his One. Wondering how it was possible to have found his One in a human, he would outlive her no doubt. He reddened unusually and gulped, he found his throat was dry and unable to swallow any saliva.
Kili cleared his throat and to which made Bryn scramble off his lap and to the hard ground into a mud puddle. "Oww." She cried out. Bryn had never been so embarrassed, before she could get up Fili had gotten off his pony and helped her up. Her soft hands caressed his hard and coarse palm. They stood and Fili saw that she was shorter than him. While Fili found it odd that she was so small she didn't think anything of it, everyone seemed to tower over her.
"How come you're so small? Aren't most humans taller?" He asked without thinking.
"Yes, but I'm not most humans." She replied.
"Fee, Irak'Adad is calling for us." Kili spoke breaking them apart. (means Uncle)
"Of course, I'm coming." He told him leading his pony away from the woman.
Bryn was lost in thought what just happened? Why was she so drawn to the blonde hair dwarf? Why couldn't she stop having dreams of him? And why were they always put in these awkward situations? She smiled to herself thinking of her dreams or visions whatever they were. Shaking her head, what was she thinking this was no time to being taking a fancy to anyone. She knew better.
Then out of the corner of her eye she saw Gandalf pacing away from the group and hoped that he would be back soon. Observing the group, she noticed they were making camp and that Oin was gathering wood for the fire alone and it prompted her to help him. Once they both had arms full of sticks and dried leaves, they headed over to the spot dug for fire. Oin thanked her a bit loudly but she only smiled at him. Remembering that her head was still in slight pain and that she needed to ask him if he had any tonics that could help.
"Oin?" She spoke quietly at first then remembered he couldn't hear well. "Umm, Oin, do you think you could look at my head?"
"Of course, lass come sit and I'll see what I have." She sat a bit too hard in front of him causing a sharp wincing pain up her side. Oin dug through his bag that was full of different bottles and dried flowers of sorts. As he examined her, he took notice of all her bruises and cuts. He pulled out Arnica and started to apply it to the bruise on her face. Then an oil he called Rosehip seed and put on her cuts along with tea tree oil which made her nose twitch at the smell. He then pulled out an empty bottle and mixed them together and added sandalwood powder. He handed it to her and instructed her to apply to where she may need. She nodded her thanks and walked away.
Bryn went to her bag and pulled out the only other clothes that Bilbo gave her that fit. She started to walk away to change in privacy.
"Where are you going?" Thorin demanded.
"I need to change my clothes, I fell." She added lamely. Obvious that her clothes were caked in mud and that she needed more than a change of clothes.
"You cannot go alone. Take someone to accompany you." He ordered and walked away. She glared at the back of him in annoyance she wanted privacy but that was something that she still was neglected to have.
"Fine." She retorted as she looked around for Fili shamefully, he was nowhere to be found. Kili was gone too, then she saw them in the distance with the ponies and her horse. Finally, her eyes landed on Bilbo. "Bilbo?"
"hmm? Yes Bryn?"
"Could you umm, accompany me? I need to change my clothes and Thorin said that someone must be with me." She explained irritated with the leader of the group.
"Uh, sure." He said as he blushed scratching the back of his head.
"Thank you." She walked into the forest Bilbo following behind. When she started stripping Bilbo turned immediately around. She smiled at the Hobbit she knew him to be very respectful and made her come to trust him. Pulling the caked on muddy clothes off her proved to be more of a challenge then she expected. Putting on her only other dry clothes she felt better. She looked at the gown Bilbo had given her and frowned she had no way to clean it, so she left it there.
When she came back to camp, she saw that they were preparing dinner and offered her help. Bombur and Bofur both handed her a knife and potatoes at the same time. Grabbing the knife and the small bag of potatoes she went to work peeling and cutting them up sticking them in the pot as she went. She noticed the lack of vegetables in the stew and noticed they were on a farm and grabbed an onion. She started cutting in up and sticking it into the pot. Bofur and Bombur started to complain.
"Trust me you will like it," And when they looked to continue, she simply said. "please?" They turned away and let her have rein over the stew. When she added carrots, they didn't complain either and she smiled to herself. She gathered more potatoes and other vegetables into their now empty bag and tied it off handed in to Bofur who tossed it to Bifur. Bifur Put it with the rest of the supplies.
They passed around the food and Bilbo seemed worried that Gandalf hadn't returned, Bryn was concerned too. But Bofur was right in the sense that Gandalf was a Wizard and could take care of himself. She giggled when Bofur had to slap the ladle out of Bombur's hand he had three servings already. Glad that none of the dwarves complained about the stew and Bofur and Bombur agreed that she could help with food anytime. She watched as Bilbo left to bring Fili and Kili their food. Was it wrong of her to hope that they liked it? She wanted to go with Bilbo but she knew better with the others watching.
Balin caught her eye which was still looking off in the direction Bilbo had left. He got up and sat next to her and this made her jump a bit. Slightly stunned that he sought to talk to her let alone be in her company.
"What's a matter lass?" He asked giving her a I already know look.
"Nothing a bit restless I guess." She shrugged it off.
"You know Thorin can be a bit rough around the edges but he means well." He told her.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"I overheard your conversation with him the other night." He admitted.
"I see… so you know that I'm older and that he thinks I'm trying something with Fili."
"Aye that I do but I also know that you never answered Thorin's question, I hope there will be a time where you will trust us." He said comforting her.
"I hope so too." She answered.
"Lassie I only have one request."
"What's that Balin?"
"Don't break his heart." He said looking directly at her. Here she was supposed to be a seer and he knew more than she. Hmph. She wouldn't let it get that far, her and Fili would never happen. Then she did the exact opposite.
"I don't think I could if I tried. Besides he's already said that there was nothing."
"Ahh, so you do like him." He smiled.
"Wha? Was this a trick?"
"No lassie, but now I know." He was looking at Thorin while dwelling on his thoughts.
"You're not going to tell anyone are you?"
"No, I won't." He said as he got up and left. Bryn let out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding and felt better and worse at the same time. Glad she was able to admit her feelings but insecure about those feelings. She couldn't understand the feelings she was having for Fili but she knew that they weren't normal and that they did mean something.
