The Quirks of Magic

Prologue

...

"Ms Uraraka, are you aware that you are a mage?"

Those were the very words that would change her life forever. Never before could she have imagined having this conversation. And never before could she have known that this conversation would change her life forever. It was supposed to be a normal day for her, going to school and helping out with her family's business, etc.

But no, fate had other ideas. Which is why she was having this conversation with the blonde American and her broccoli-haired companion. It was an accident, of course, she didn't mean to use... Whatever the hell she used back there in the abandoned alleyway against those teens. Ochako Uraraka was fairly certain whatever power she used back there wasn't her Quirk.

Even if it was, she doubted that she was one of the rare few in the world capable of wielding two Quirks rather than having just one. Her Quirk diagnosis had only indicated that she had only one. That was her manipulation of gravity, nothing more. She had mainly used this Quirk in helping out with the business.

Uraraka Constructions was a long-time family-run business that dealt with small-scale infrastructure construction work, engineering, etc. Ochako had mainly used her Quirk in the family business as a way to practice her ability to control her Quirk. Of course, doing such a thing was risky and she was sitting in the grey area regarding the laws of Quirk usage and restrictions.

Nevertheless, it offered her a unique skill in control compared to her peers in middle school when it comes to Quirk control. The only time she did practice her Quirk with her peers was usually during a Quirk counseling session, which she couldn't afford to do anyway. Recently her family's business was in hard times and she did everything she could to support them. Using her Quirk in helping out with the company was one way to kill two birds with one stone.

Going back to the present. She was jumped by a few unsavory strangers on the way back from school where she... For lack of a better word, exploded and manifested this mysterious power that now courses through her veins. After this little accident, before she knew it. Ochako now found herself in what she could describe as an impromptu interrogation from two curious individuals who had just happened to witness that entire event gone down.

Ochako would very much like to go home and rest now. But the pair of strangers was adamant about finding out the true extent of her new abilities. Provided she knew what they meant when they were asking her about her knowledge as a... Mage?

"I'm afraid I don't understand what you are referring to?" asked Ochako a little annoyed, "What do you mean by 'aware that I am a mage'?"

"Someone who can use magic," explained the blonde, "What you did back there was magic. Caught the both of us by surprise of course, albeit with an entirely different reason."

"Uh... Hello haha, nice joke, and yer got me. But magic isn't real," Ochako retorted letting some of her accent slip, "I mean sure, having Quirks is considered somewhat magical considering what they can do. But seriously actual magic of all things? Yer can't be serious about this aren't you?"

"I am," replied the blonde, unsure of her response. "So you don't know?"

"Of course, I don't know what the hell are you talking about!?"

The blonde-haired girl sighed in response, "I guess I have no choice then. After all, seeing is believing. Izuku please lend her your wand."

"Will do Melissa," replied the broccoli-haired boy whom Ochako assumed was around her age.

"So that's her name and his name too," Ochako thought as she watched the green-haired boy take out a case from his bag, and from it was a strange-looking wooden stick.

It was a strange-looking stick at first glance. Unlike the magic wands, she had seen depicted countless times on TV, in games, and movies. This one seemed like someone had taken a piece from a random tree and called it a wand. It was roughly 11 inches long and was orange-brown, with a bone-like handle that matched the wand's sinister aesthetic.

From just looking at it, Ochako could feel dread as Izuku handed over his wand to her. With a gentle nudge, he presented his wand to the young girl.

Motioning her to take it from his grasp. "Here take it," he said, "Don't be afraid it may look intimating but it's merely a tool for us wizards and witches to cast our spells and conduct our magic."

"O-Okay," said Ochako as she grasped a hold of the wand, "Uhh, what am I supposed to do now?" Ochako looked confused as she held the wand in her hands.

"Give it a little wave," Melissa replied, "And then watch the magic unfold."

"Okay then," Ochako replied, "Here goes nothing," as she made a quick forward and backward wave. Expecting this whole affair to be a pointless show to demonstrate this folly. And along with expecting nothing major to happen as she gave the wand a wave.

Except it wasn't what she had initially expected. Almost immediately after that quick wave, a cacophony of chaos erupted as the lights went out, the plates and dishes broke, the TVs exploded, and water from every pipe, sink, and toilet erupted from every orifice. Amid this chaos, Ochako quickly dropped the wand in a panic as the rest of the restaurant descended into madness.

"What's happening!?"

"A Quirk Discharge?"

"A Villain Attack!?"

"Everyone Run!"

"Get to Cover!"

"We need Heroes here!"

"I want my mommy!"

Ochako peered out in their private booth to look in horror at the mess that she may have caused. Amid the cacophony of voices from multiple patrons trying to get some semblance of the situation. She quickly glanced at the duo who she now knew were mages who looked fairly calm and relaxed despite the chaos that was ensuing all around them.

"Well? Aren't you going to do something about this?!" she yelled at them.

"Relax Uraraka we have this all under control," Izuku replied as he hastily retrieved his wand after she had dropped it from her accidental attempt at casting magic.

"Under control?! Does this look like it's under control to you!" Uraraka emphasized the point as she pointed to the ongoing aftermath of the chaos occurring throughout the restaurant.

"Like I said, don't worry about it. Melissa is going to fix this... Little accident of yours," he replied pointing to Melissa who had her wand out ready to cast a spell.

"Reparo!" she cried out.

In an instant, Ochako bore witness to something she would describe as incredible. Acting as if some telekinetic force was at work. Slowly but surely fragments of glass, ceramic, and water began to either recede or reform back at one another. Once that was done, the lights came back on and the restaurant looked as good as new. As if the chaos had never occurred. Leaving many restaurant goers and patrons alike confused and concerned.

Melissa quickly sat back down and holstered her wand back in its case before letting out a sigh of relief.

"Phew, that could have been worse," she remarked.

"Yeah no kidding, that stunt would have at least caused a class II breach and violated the Statute of Secrecy at the very least," Izuku stated, "We should have done this in a less conspicuous location."

"Yeah that's about right," Melissa replied.

Ochako on the other hand was speechless, "Uh guys, what the hell was all of that? What did she do to completely fix this..."

"Breath Uraraka, everything will be explained shortly," Izuku reassured her with a smile. "Incredible isn't it? That is real magic for you."

"Incredible, this goes beyond incredible everything I have seen should have been impossible," Ochako stated, "What kind of spell was that?"

"A Mending Charm," explained Melissa, "The Mending Charm will repair broken objects with a flick of the wand. Accidents do happen, so it is essential to know how to mend our errors. It could be used to seamlessly repair a broken object and work on most materials. This incredibly useful and practical charm was invented by British witch Orabella Nuttley, around 1754. As you know, Charms are just one of the seven categories of spells we witches and wizards have at our disposal. The mending Charm is a spell of this category as shown by its name. Pretty amazing right?"

"Yeah," Breathed Ochako, "Are... I mean is everyone across the world capable of doing this?"

"It's a yes and a no," Izuku replied, "To explain as you are aware, eighty percent of the population have special abilities that we know today as Quirks."

"Yeah, I know that so how does this...?" Ochako was about to reply before being rudely interrupted.

"I was getting please do not interrupt," said Izuku.

"Okay then, continue with your explanation."

"As I was saying, eighty percent of the population has Quirks; but the twenty percent doesn't. At least that's what most people think."

Ochako's eyes widen, "You can't possibly be saying that..."

"That's right, roughly eighteen percent of the world can use magic. The reason why nobody is aware of this is because we are kinda... Force to keep magic a secret under the Statute of Secrecy enacted by the International Confederation of Wizards." explained Izuku.

"Okay, then what about the two percent then?" Ochako inquired.

"Well, it's more like one point six to one point eight percent," Izuku scratches his head, "Our muggle or No-Maj professor can explain it better but. In that case, these individuals are what we can call truly Quirkless or a Squib; our general term for referring to someone who is magically inept. They cannot use magic and they cannot use Quirks. But don't be fooled though, they are smart and capable people. Most of our development and breakthroughs in the fields of combining science and magic in recent years are all thanks to them. As such, we owe them many thanks as a result."

"I see, but I am confused though. Why hide the existence of magic? Especially in this day and age?" asked Ochako.

"It has to do with why the Statute of Secrecy was enacted in the first place," said Melissa speaking up, "You see, before the statute was enacted witches and wizards for thousands of years have tried to co-exist with the no-magic. Unfortunately, as you can quickly tell, this didn't exactly work out as much as we hoped. After all, humans are humans, they naturally fear what they do not understand. This eventually cumulated in the witch-hunts of the 16th and 17th century. As the witch-hunts grew ever fiercer, wizarding families began to live double lives, using charms of concealment to protect themselves and their families. By the seventeenth century, any witch or wizard who chose to fraternize with Muggles became suspect of ratting them out to the No-Magic, even an outcast in his or her community."

Ochako was shocked "How horrible,"

"Yeah, these were dark times," Melissa continued with her story, "It had gotten so bad that it had made many in the wizarding community feel, and justifiably so, that offering to aid their No-magic neighbors with their magic was tantamount to volunteering to fetch the firewood for one's funeral pyre: many witches and wizards were locked up and sentenced to death on the charge of witchcraft. Some managed to use magic to escape. Witch hunts rarely ever caught actual witches or wizards. However, some wizards were not as lucky and were immediately stripped of their wands. Wizarding families were particularly prone to losing younger family members, whose inability to control their magic made them noticeable, and vulnerable, to witch-hunters. Adding fuel to the already out-of-control fire, the widespread persecution of wizarding children by the No-magic, merely escalated attempts by the No-Maj to force witches and wizards to perform magic for Muggle ends and teach them magic, and increasing numbers of witch-burnings, including those of No-magic mistakenly burned as witches, were the catalysts for some kind of measure to be taken."

"Was there anything that was done to stop this madness? Surely the wizards and witches across the world would have thought of something."

Melissa shook her head, "There were but none were truly successful. In Great Britain for example, the newly-created Ministry of Magic attempted to liaise with the British Monarch (then jointly William III and Mary II) via a special Ministry Delegation, begging them for the protection of wizards under No-magic law. The failure of this attempt at official recognition and protection seems to have been the final straw that forced wizardkind to voluntarily move in the opposite direction toward secrecy. Henceforth, the Statute of Secrecy was created."

"I see, but the reason for its creation appeared to be from the times it forced its creation. But things are different now. So why is this law still in place?" Ochako inquired.

"There were many reasons, Uraraka," replied Melissa, "Of course, there were many discussions within the ICW to retract the Statute of Secrecy once Quirks started to appear amongst the general populace. However, the chaos that followed after the appearance of Quirks was the final decision that made the ICW reconsider dropping the Statute of Secrecy. The Quirk Wars, the Eurasian conflict, and the Purity Wars that scorched the entire world made it very clear to the ICW that revealing the existence of magic was only adding fuel to an already chaotic situation. Therefore, the idea of repealing the Statute of Secrecy was pushed back for the foreseeable future."

"Okay that makes sense, what if they try to reveal magic to the populace now in this present day?"

"Do you want to see our society rip itself apart like how it did during the dawn of Quirks?" Melissa asked with a deadpan expression.

"That's a fair point," replied Ochako, "So... What happened now?"

"Well, normally an employee from the Ministry and a representative of a wizardry school would contact you and your parents about your situation and inform them about potential education prospects," explained Melissa, "But that usually happens around the age of eleven and as you know I suspect that you're thirteen right now is that correct?"

Ochako nodded in response.

"Then, in that case, you're two to three years late in your magical education. Which is a problem but not a great one. We have many cases of prospective students entering late. In one such case, entering during what should be their fifth year. But that is not counting the problems that arise from the unusualness of your situation."

"Indeed, Uraraka you have a Quirk right?" asked Izuku.

Ochako once again nodded in response.

"By all means, your magical abilities shouldn't even exist! Until now, no one with a Quirk has been able to wield magic. Yet here we are shown that not only do you have a Quirk but also can use magic. You're probably the first person in the entire world to be able to wield both powers. Which makes this situation even more delicate." Izuku explained.

Ochako looked at the pair curiously. "Was her ability to have a Quirk and the ability to wield magic that special?" she thought, if so it does explain... so much.

"In that case, what is going to happen to me?" she asked.

"Let me handle that," said a voice.

Ochako jumped and barely held down her scream as a bird flew into their booth and suddenly morphed into a human form, revealing an older woman. She had jet-black hair and yellow-gold eyes that seemed to drill a hole into Ochako herself. At once both Izuku and Melissa jump from their seats in surprise.

"Master!"

"Professor, what brings you here?" asked Melissa.

The older woman now identified as a magic professor took a good look at Ochako who she nervously waved. Before turning her gaze to the pair.

"You want to explain to me what's going on here?" she asked.

"Well professor you see, she is actually..."

...

"A mage?! Not only that a mage with a Quirk?" said the Professor as she once again glanced at Ochako. Holding a strange tool Ochako presumed was magical in origin. "That should be impossible by all means."

"We established that however, we can confirm that she has magical abilities. From the initial testing we conduct via my wand," Izuku explained.

"Well it appears, you aren't lying about this," said the Professor as she placed the magical tool down. "This is a miracle."

"I think we've already established that Professor Tsubasa," said Melissa.

"H-How did this even happen? When did you start manifesting your magic?" Tsubasa asked.

"Right after school," Ochako replied truthfully, "To be fairly honest I don't know how this happened."

"Of course," Tsubasa sighed, "To be fair I am just as surprised as well. I don't blame you."

"So, uh, what is going to happen now?" asked Ochako meekly. "More specifically what is going to happen to me?"

"To be fairly honest, the Ministry and others around the world would want to have a piece of you for experimentation," Professor Tsubasa said bluntly.

"Wait What?!"

"Professor!"

"You can't be serious!?"

Tsubasa raised her hand to quickly silence the trio. She then pointed to Ochako.

"I am going to be fairly honest with you, Ms Uraraka. Your unique circumstance provides you with a unique experience and potential opportunities that no one in this world may have," Tsubasa continued, "That being said, you are going to have to be introduced to the magical world along with fulfilling your magical education. Now this isn't exactly up for debate. You must enroll in magical education this is compulsory. Magic is an extremely powerful force one that requires years of study and training to master. Without this educational background. Using magic is like putting a loaded gun to your forehead. We don't want any issues to arise shall we?"

"Y-Yes I-I understand," Stammered Ochako who was already feeling a bit nervous at the immense challenge she now had to face from here on out.

"Good, now with that covered the next thing we should do is get you a wand. So that you may better get the hand on using magic," explained Tsubasa, "Now unlike in the West where magic wands are the norm and it reigns supreme as the preferred choice of spell casting. Wizards and Witches in Asia mostly cast their spells without the use of magic. While this isn't exactly mandatory, it is highly encouraged. But for now, because of your unique situation, I suggest you use a wand and master it before even trying to think about casting without a wand."

"R-Right, and the next thing?"

Tsubasa gave her a warm smile "Getting a wand of course. But as you know it is getting late and we would like to have you back home before your parents get worried. We shall deal with this tomorrow and thankfully for us, it is the weekend after all. So for now, get some rest and don't worry about the consequences. I will deal with that and the documents for the ministry."

"And what about my parents?" Ochako asked, "Do you think they should know about... My unique circumstance?"

"That is entirely up to you young Uraraka," Tsubasa replied, "If you want my advice, I suggest you take things slow for now. After all, we don't want to cause your family unnecessary worry. Like I said before, I'll handle the difficult things. If anything is bothering you feel free to ask. And here you'll be needing this."

Tsubasa proceeded to toss her a mirror, "This is a magical communication device," she explained, "It works kinda like a modern smartphone it already has my contact details. If anything comes up just find my contact details and feel free to call when needed. It also has these two contacts as well. I will be tasking these two to watch over you for the time being. Feel free to call them and they will be happy to help."

"I see, thanks I am grateful,"

"No problem, I am just doing my job as an educator and orientation representative to new prospective witches and wizards. And speaking of, you two do make sure she settles down alright?" Tsubasa ordered, "She will require familiar faces for the foreseeable future during her introduction to the magical world. So make sure she fits in."

"You have your trust professor," replied Melissa, "We'll get it done."

"Good, now with that said. I'll be taking my leave. The Ministry needs to be informed of this latest development," without further ado, and as quickly as she had appeared. Professor Tsubasa disappeared into her bird form before flying away leaving the trio to their thoughts.

"So... That was a thing, sorry if today was too much. Couldn't help but feel the need to come to you. Especially after awakening your magic after such a traumatic event," Izuku replied sheepishly.

"I guess, there is nothing you could have done," Ochako replied a bit nervous but somewhat excited. "But then again, it is exciting to learn something that I had once thought was fictional isn't it?"

"I already like your enthusiasm," Melissa said with approval, "I expect we shall be seeing each other commonly from here on out!"

"Yeah," exclaimed Izuku, "Using our magic we can be a new different type of hero. We can be this world's first magical heroes."

A magical hero huh? The very thought sounded pleasing to her. Perhaps gaining the ability to use magic wasn't all as bad as she thought. Barring the potential difficulty of fulfilling her magical education as well as balancing out her own. But regardless of the challenges she might face, Ochako was confident that no barrier was capable of stopping nor any barrier was going to slow her down any time soon.

She was going to be a hero no matter what. She made a promise to her secret mentor and trainer, after all for the last six months. Regardless if she had a Quirk or Magic, she was going to forge her destiny. And the world shall now tremble under the power of the Quirks of magic.

This was her story.

...

A/N:

So this idea has been in my head for weeks now.

Lately, I have been going through a My Hero Academia fanfic reading spree and after reading multiple fan works. I soon realized the lack of any magic AU's regarding this universe. Henceforth, I decided to write my own.

So this is a fanfic that explores the Wizarding world combined with the world of My Hero Academia. I already have a basic idea of how this story will play out.

I do plan to follow the main canon plotline of My Hero Academia until Kamino. That is when the story will take a turn. I have multiple arc plans and a basic idea of how this story will end.

It is hard to say how many chapters this will have. Nevertheless, be prepared for one hell of a ride as we explore the perspective of Ochako on her journey to be a magic hero. My choice of choosing Ochako as the main character comes down to why she is out of all people in the world.

Can use magic despite having a Quirk. There is a mystery and there is war and there will be a major character death. So without further ado, this story is launched. Feel free to add your thoughts and constructive criticism is helpful.
