What you recognize I don't own. It's the year 2265 and it's been been just under 335 years since the death of Sherlock Holmes after a bout with the flu in winter of 1930. Sherlock Holmes, Watson, Inspectors Lestrade, Gregson, Hopkins, and Bradstreet, and Mycroft Holmes have been reincarnated and have remembered their original lives since they were in their mid teens and for the past fifteen years have been living their lives like they had before, though instead of being unofficial consultants Holmes and Watson are on Scotland Yard's payroll and paid for the cases they help the Yard with. But unknowingly to the group for a time they are not the only ones who have been reincarnated and remember their previous lives, enemies have also returned, including the one who almost killed Sherlock Holmes, and the group has had to deal with those enemies not knowing the truth initially. There are also other secrets that they are not aware of regarding their current lives but since enemies are more important they deal with the enemies first not aware of the fact that they too have their memories. But now they are aware and have actively been trying to defeat Moriarty at the very least and find the others hidden in the shadows though without much success which has led to loss of life once more which is where the story begins. It's the Great Hiatus all over again, however this time everyone knew that there was no miraculous return for Sherlock Holmes despite memories saying otherwise. John Watson had seen his friend shot in the heart right before the fall at Reichenbach Falls where they were on vacation a year and a half earlier while fighting Professor Moriarty once more. When the others heard that they feared for Watson's mental and emotional well being enough that Lestrade flew over even though he was in the middle of a case due to the fact that Watson was forced to stay in Switzerland to handle the legal side of things regarding that day. Time has helped heal the wound but everyone is still struggling with the loss of Sherlock Holmes, with everyone that was known to be close to him being watched closely still due to an incident shortly after his death, though it was proven that the group wasn't actually suicidal they also were diagnosed with PTSD and depression which affected their thinking and made them a little more careless in the field. After their suspension pending investigation into the incident ended they were warned about the new measures being put into place until further notice and no one fought it because they realized it was a necessity with their state of minds being what they were and the incident being way too close a call for everyone. Though this story begins during the healing phase it very early on has someone remembering events after Reichenbach falls has happened for the second time for the time travelers, for how can one understand where someone is coming from in a scenario not yet thought of amongst the time travelers if one doesn't understand how they have handled something similar in the past?
Inspector Lestrade was doing paperwork that had piled up over the past few days due to an intense case that was actually still ongoing when the door was knocked.
"Come in"
The door opens and Inspector Bradstreet comes in with a thick file in his left hand.
"Hey Lestrade, Switzerland just sent the final report that was promised regarding the incident"
"Have they?"
"Yes, it's right here"
"Oh...I forgot that it's within the timeline that they promised"
"I also forgot until I saw the title of the report, then I remembered"
"Yeah...I guess we deliberately tried to forget considering what that report's about"
"I think you're right, but still, in some ways we can never forget. I still tense up sometimes when I hear the phone ring because of the phone call you received a year and a half ago"
"I know, the same thing happens to me as well though at least it's not nearly as bad as after the initial incident"
With that thought in mind Lestrade's mind goes back to a year and a half earlier to the phone call that started the beginning of dreading phone calls.
A year and a half ago
Lestrade was doing paperwork when suddenly his desk phone rang.
"This is Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard speaking...yes I know him...can I speak with him?...thank you...John it's Lestrade...wait...what did you just say?...I'm sorry but I must have heard you wrong John because I thought you just said...I see...I see...I can be there in a few hours if you want...okay then I'll meet you there...bye...yes I'm still here...understood...thank you for that...goodbye"
Lestrade slowly puts down the phone and waits a full three minutes before trying to stand up with the hopes that he didn't faint due to the shock he'd just received over the phone. When he finally went out to the main area everyone could tell that something had happened because Lestrade was pale.
"Sir, has a new victim been found?"
"No...no, I haven't received word about a new victim being found. Bradstreet you're in charge of the investigation for the next few days I...I need to get to Switzerland on the next available flight"
"Why?"
"It's...it's Holmes"
"What's happened?, and don't deny that something hasn't happened because I know you too well"
"I don't have the full details but...after John and I come home there's going to be a closed casket funeral due to the fact that the casket will be empty"
"Wait...are you saying what I think you're saying?"
"Yes, Sherlock Holmes is dead, and at Reichenbach Falls"
"Reichenbach...I never thought I would hear that dreaded name again, at least not like this"
"I know, now then as I stated I need to get going, John..."
"Right, he needs you due to his mental state"
"Exactly"
"Then you'd best get going"
"Right, case files are on my desk Bradstreet"
"Understood, we'll keep you updated if you keep us updated"
"Understood"
Twelve hours later and Lestrade was in Switzerland, and as soon as he passed through customs he saw a person with a sign that had his name on it
"Inspector Lestrade?"
"Yes"
"I'll take you to the station, we tried to get him to go back to his hotel room but..."
"Yeah, that wouldn't have gone well at all"
"Are they...I'm going to be frank, are they in a relationship?"
"No, they never thought of each other like that, but they are or well...were close friends"
"Why do I get the feeling that they weren't the only two who were close friends?"
"I'm not getting into that, in any case though I need to see Watson"
"Very well I'll take you to him"
And so Lestrade is taken to the police station and once there the Chief leads him to the room Watson was in.
"Watson...what happened?"
"It was Moriarty...Moriarty killed Holmes, and this time...this time there's no magical return that's going to happen"
"Hey, you can't know that for sure"
"Except I do, this time I wasn't sent away and I know exactly what happened and the fact that Holmes isn't going to come back. Moriarty shot him Lestrade, Moriarty shot Holmes in the heart, they both fell immediately afterwords since Sherlock had been fighting Moriarty for control over the gun, and no there's no way Moriarty will come back because Sherlock did some serious damage before that"
"I see...well then due to the fact that there are no remains to recover I won't go that route, however I will remain behind until all of the paperwork is dealt with properly"
"But I..."
"No Watson, you can't deal with the paperwork, not with what's just happened...again"
"Very well I admit that I'm probably not thinking completely straight and could use the help"
"Then that's what I'll do, I'll even...I'll even take care of your things at the hotel"
"Thank you"
"At least...at least Sherlock kept to the vow"
"To a degree yes, at least there is that but...I wish the cost hadn't been so high"
"Same here Watson, same here"
And so later that day Lestrade makes the necessary arrangements regarding Sherlock's personal affects and also transfers Watson to his hotel room so that he could keep an eye on him. A week later and everything that could be done regarding the legal paperwork was finished.
"We'll be sending a report to Scotland Yard within a year and a half after we complete our investigation"
"Oh?"
"It's not that we don't believe Mr. Watson but..."
"But you're required to do your own investigation and figure out the full details that Watson may have forgotten or doesn't even know"
"Exactly, plus...while most likely there are no remains to recover, and you didn't ask for us to do so we're going to try and find Mr. Holmes' remains for proper burial, though I do understand why you're going to be holding a funeral with an empty casket once you return home"
"Yes, we need some form of closure, even if..."
"Even if it's not the closure you would want"
"Exactly"
"In any case, we're going to be sending a couple of officers back with you for the funeral"
"No, I'm sorry but no, this is something that needs to remain private"
"But we..."
"I know, I get that you want to honor us and him at the same time considering what you've been told about him, but I think it's best that you stay away, this is going to be hard enough as it is and there's...there are aspects about this that you would get confused about and want details that we can't get into at the moment"
"Very well"
However what Lestrade didn't count on was that Watson had overheard the conversation and made his own decision.
"Lestrade, I just overheard the conversation and I want their representatives to come"
"But John..."
"I know what you're fearing and it's a legitimate fear, however I think that they need it just as much as we do"
Lestrade sighs at that realizing that Watson was correct and simply nods as the signal that he conceded to Watson in this regard, though he also spoke out loud for the benefit of the Switzerland police.
"It's your choice John, however I think we should let the others know first due to the sensitive nature of some things"
"Agreed, it's too late in the day to do much anyways regarding flights back home"
"Wait, what?"
"I think I should explain, unfortunately due to some situations plane travel is extremely limited at the moment, no traveling at night is one of the restrictions except in certain circumstances"
"My situation and the people on the plane being one of them?"
"Not quite, because your plane arrived right before the cutoff"
"Oh"
"In any case we'll make the flight arrangements while you two deal with whatever it is that you have to deal with back home"
"Thank you"
And so Lestrade is the one who makes the call back home letting the group know about the Swiss police officers that were going to be attending the funeral and thus certain things needed to be kept quiet until the group was alone while the Swiss police made the arrangements for getting to England
"We'll leave tomorrow afternoon barring any weather"
"Understood"
And so the next day the group leaves Switzerland and arrives in England where Mycroft was the one who picked everyone up, and the Swiss police could tell that Mycroft had been struggling with the news of his brother's death.
"Mr. Holmes, as representatives of the Swiss police we once again want to say that we're sorry for your loss"
"Thank you, the...the funeral will be held two days from now, it was the only time for certain people to be able to come due to their schedule"
"That's right, I heard that it was basically all over but the paperwork, I can't wait for their full reports since it's so sudden"
"Well...turns out that I had a piece of the case that was the means to solve it and just didn't realize it until I visited them the day after you arrived in Switzerland"
"I see, in any case we'll take the officers to the hotel they will be staying at and then head home ourselves"
"Good idea"
And so that's what they do and then two days later they hold the funeral and that's when Lestrade and Watson found out why the Swiss wanted to come in the first place.
"I'm sure none of you are aware of this but we've developed a tradition over the years when it comes to funerals of our officers, this tradition is modified slightly but also applies to foreign police officers who die on our soil"
"But Sherlock wasn't a police officer"
"No, but he was a registered consultant and we've long treated consultants the same way"
"I see"
And so the officers do their own tradition which was a mix of American tradition and older traditions regarding funerals from a couple of other cultures.
"Thank you for honoring him as if he were a police officer"
"It's not a problem, now then it's best that we get going, we don't have a flight until tomorrow but we still have things to do here today"
Once the Swiss officers leave the small group actually remembers Sherlock the way they needed to with the fact that they were going through this loss again
"Mycroft...I know that it isn't likely but...if his remains are found will you let us know?"
"Of course, should I also inform you if it turns out that he's actually alive?"
"No...no if that's the case then I don't want to know until he can return or let's us know himself, because if this turns out to be the same as last time..."
"Understood, though it will be hard for me to keep it a secret and hurt as well because unlike last time..."
"I know, but if we're being watched..."
"Good point"
"In any case we've just got to continue our work as if Sherlock truly is dead and didn't miraculously survive both the bullet and the fall"
"Agreed"
"Then let's go, we have work to do in his name"
"Right"
And with that the group leaves the graveyard to continue their work though they also knew that they would be visiting Sherlock's grave regularly.
Present
Lestrade came out of his musings through Bradstreet.
"Lestrade, did you just hear what I said?"
"No sorry, what is it you just said?"
"I said that at least you've improved more than I have regarding the phone, and I think the others are also still struggling with the phone issue more than you are"
"I see, what none of you know though is that I also have a secondary problem that I didn't realize initially. I discovered soon after our return to London that if I don't know that the group is in the building, and where Mycroft and Watson are I tend to tense up until they are confirmed safe"
"You were thinking of that day weren't you?"
"Yes, it's why I didn't immediately answer you, did you copy that report?"
"Yes"
"Make sure the others get it and leave my copy on my desk"
"Yes sir, I shall then get back to my investigation, just got a new lead as the report came in"
"Understood, I want your report on my desk when you can"
"Yes sir"
And so Bradstreet leaves the room and after a few more reports Lestrade decides that he can't delay it any further and thus reads the Switzerland police's report regarding Sherlock Holmes's death at Reichenbach a year and a half earlier. Once he was finished he knew that there had been nothing John could have done to prevent Sherlock's death and the police also couldn't have stopped it, the report also proved that there was no hope of recovering Sherlock's or Moriarty's remains because the Falls were simply too dangerous, the police had tried once with a different person who had simply fallen off the trail due to how wet and slippery it had gotten and they had made an attempt this time as well twice before it was mandated that no more searches would be done for safety reasons
