"You can of course decide where your home base will be but maybe through your travels these past six months you might have contacts in Slovakia that could help"
"I do indeed have contacts in Slovakia that will help hopefully"
"Good, now then decide where you're going to be based and we'll go from there"
Sherlock ultimately decided to go to Germany due to connections that he had there that were stronger than in any other country in Europe. With that destination in mind the Swiss government made sure to get Sherlock to Berlin which is where he decided to stay and also helped pay for a relatively cheap hotel room while he looked for an apartment that would suite his needs.
"Hopefully I can find a more permanent place quickly"
"Agreed, but we have some requirements regarding your place"
"I think I will be able to fill those requirements easily since I want a place that while relatively cheap is in a decent and secured neighborhood"
"Unfortunately those aren't the only requirements that we need"
"I will also make sure that if there is no soundproofing there will be an area that we can speak in private"
"That will work"
"Then I guess it's time to get to Germany and get started on finding a place to live and a job"
"Guess so, you'll keep your cell phone number though understood?"
"Clearly, it's best that we do that anyways for ease of contact"
And so Sherlock manages to catch his flight to Germany and goes to the hotel that had been arranged for him. Fortunately the hotel knew he primarily spoke English and thus was prepared for him when he arrived during the night.
"You're in room 412, it's one of the rooms that can at need also act like a temporary apartment"
"Thank you, that is indeed what I need while I find a place of my own"
"Glad we could help with that, now then we'll tell you where some of the stores are tomorrow, I'm sure you want to get some sleep tonight though"
"Thank you, is there a place I can eat though? I wasn't exactly in the mood for airport food"
"That was anticipated and there's food that you can just heat up in your room, there's also cereal if you don't want to heat anything up"
"Thank you, so restaurants close at a specific time then?"
"Yes, they closed about two hours ago"
"Understood, for now though guess it's time for me to get to the room and get settled"
And so Sherlock was given the key to his hotel room and after heating something up he went straight to bed knowing that he was in for a long day tomorrow and in the coming days between a job search and apartment hunt. The next day he started searching for both a job and an apartment that met all of his needs.
"I know you need a job but...to not have an actual apartment is an issue that I think you understand"
"I do, and I am in the process of looking for a place but that may take time"
"In any case we'll get back to you about the application depending on other factors other than no permanent home at the moment"
After that appointment he looked at two apartments and neither really met with all his needs and so he immediately turned them down and continued the search. A week later though made all the difference in apartment hunting and he found the apartment he liked and needed.
"I'll take this apartment if possible"
"Sure, just let me get the paperwork and we also need a deposit from you when you sign, how about we meet back here in an hour"
"Very well"
An hour later and Sherlock signed the paperwork that meant that the apartment was now his, but he couldn't move in for another week due to the fact that there were still a few things that needed done to make said apartment ready.
"I think though that I'd best call you once I'm ready for you as a precaution in case what I need to finish up takes longer than a week"
"Understood"
Ultimately it would be a week and a half before Sherlock could move into the new apartment because of water pipe issues but eventually he did move in. Once that was done he started his two different missions, one which was taking down the last of Moriarty's network and the other looking for the missing Swiss agent. For the Swiss agent he started by using an extremely complicated but secure means of contacting someone in Slovakia who would begin the inquiries and involve his other contacts at need.
"Well guess I'd better make contact with one of the people I became friends with in Slovakia...I do hope that they take what I have to say to them well"
This was because Sherlock was going to explain the bare basics to his contact in Slovakia since he'd primarily made friends there during his wonderings while amnesic. To start the contact process he first wrote a letter to his friend but used a PO box that his friend had in the Czech republic due to the fact that his friend had business dealings in that country that required him to visit weekly. However he gave specific instructions so that the letter didn't stop in Czech and instead would reach his contact via the fact that it would be routed to his Slovakian address through three more countries. Once that was done his contact would have instructions regarding getting information back to him including the fact hat he now had his own PO box in Germany that he deliberately set up for safety reasons. As for the rest of Moriarty's group he started by gathering public data regarding crimes in areas that Moriarty's group was last known to be in.
"This may take a while"
And with that he started looking into the crimes to see if there might be any connection while also continuing his search for a job. Fortunately with the fact that he had an actual place to live he found a job within two weeks of searching once more and they were well aware of the fact that he was a consultant with the Swiss government on an active case and told him that it wouldn't be a problem.
"Now then we do require that you keep your other job out of this one if at all possible but we'll understand if you can't"
"Understood"
The next day he started his shift and realized that he needed to contact his brother discreetly without Mycroft knowing it was from Sherlock and so after his shift ended he quickly wrote a letter disguising his writing to ensure that Mycroft wouldn't immediately recognize his brother's handwriting.
To whom it may concern,
I know that you will not immediately believe me but I hope that you at least read this letter in it's entirety first Mr. Holmes. I am an informant of your late brother Sherlock who told me how to get in contact with you if anything happened to him and I needed to get word to the British government about any of his active cases. I recently saw Devon Criston at my place of employment and know that he's a known associate of one Professor Moriarty. As Moriarty has been confirmed deceased I am forced to believe that he now works for Sebastian Moran. I know that this report is later than would be hoped for considering how long Mr. Sherlock Holmes has been dead however this is the first solid lead I have had in regards to any of Moriarty's group despite the searches I have made in between working at my normal job. Again I know that you won't believe me, or even trust me but I hope that you follow up on this lead I have given you.
PS.
I am employed in Germany
Signed,
Leanard Halstan
Once he was finished writing the letter Sherlock sealed it in an envelope and then sent it to Mycroft through the method that he had told his true informants many years earlier in case he truly had been killed abroad. A week later and his contact in Slovakia about his current assignment for the Swiss government contacted him and he found out while his contact hadn't exactly heard about a missing Swiss government agent he did remember about an accident at around the time the agent went missing with a John Doe still in the hospital in a coma. With that in mind he told his boss at his primary job that he needed to leave for a few days to take care of his job as a consultant with the Swiss government.
"Understood, I'm glad now that everything regarding your responsibilities was upfront"
"Indeed, this ways I won't lose my job over the sudden leave of absence I need"
"Indeed, now then do you need any help paying for the trip considering the fact that you probably haven't actually told the Swiss government about this?"
"No, I have the money needed, however if I have found the agent in the condition I suspect I might find them in could you have someone waiting for me at the airport on the day I tell you I'm to return?"
"Sure, let me guess emotional support?"
"Exactly, I might need to talk to someone about what's been discovered in person"
And so Sherlock heads to Slovakia and discovers that his contact in Slovakia had indeed found the Swiss government agent, and so he contacted the Swiss government who took over dealing with their agent's medical condition and medical expenses from the Slovakian government. Three days after he confirmed it was the Swiss government agent he himself went back to Germany to continue his job and did indeed need to talk about his discovery in person, mainly how it felt seeing someone else in the hospital in a similar condition to how he had wound up in a hospital relatively recently.
"Wait...so you've actually been in a coma?"
"I don't particularly like to think about it but yes"
"What was it like?"
"Quiet for the most part, occasionally I think I heard the doctors but not often, as I started coming out of the coma I know that I heard more but...well let's just say that what caused me to fall into a coma in the first place also affected other things and I needed therapy for six months to regain my strength"
"Head trauma, but why do I get the feeling you're still hiding something about your recovery regarding the coma and what you lost?"
"Because I am for safety reasons"
"Understood, by the way the bosses said that you're off the rest of the week since there's not many days of the week left anyways"
"Very well, do you know when I'm next scheduled to work?"
"Unfortunately no, you'll have to call work to find that out"
Sherlock calls the boss and discovers that he would be working on Monday the next week as his first day back to work after his job for the Swiss government had taken him away. Once he returned his coworkers wanted to know what was going on but all he said was that it was a private matter between him and his boss while his boss wanted to make sure that Sherlock was okay physically and mentally since Sherlock's boss knew some of his history regarding his health and knew about the coma at the very least if not the fact that he'd been amnesic.
"How are you?"
"I'm fine"
"Are you certain?, after all..."
"Yes, if it turns out I'm wrong I will seek the help I need"
"Very well"
"By the way, don't pay me for missed work whenever I'm on assignment for the Swiss government"
"They pay you when you do that huh?"
"Exactly, we're in a formal contract with one another, I'm their consultant which means I get paid for whatever they ask my help for, you're my steady paycheck though"
"I got it, I pay you regularly while they pay you whenever you're on assignment which won't be often"
"Exactly, basically the Swiss government is a part time job while you're my full time job"
"Okay then"
And so Sherlock was soon back to work and quickly decided that the best policy regarding his work for the Swiss government was primarily silence, only saying that the bosses knew his reasons behind his absence. As time passed Sherlock would receive many more missions from the Swiss government never suspecting that he would return home sooner than he thought he would, beginning with the death of another Scotland Yard Inspector that he'd known. But in the meantime he was working at his day job when suddenly an agent for the Swiss government came in
"Can I help you?"
"Yes actually you can good sir, I need directions to this location"
Sherlock sees the address and makes sure to give the person correct directions not knowing what was going on in reality. As soon as the person left Sherlock had a customer and so took care of them since they were his priority and later his bosses came in to check on him since it was a solo shift that night due to circumstances beyond everyone's control
"How is everything?"
"Everything is under control, it got a little busy but I handled it"
"Good, due to the situation today where you're going to have to work a double because of circumstances you're going to be off tomorrow instead of working your scheduled shift"
"Understood"
Sherlock's double shift actually went relatively okay and he slept in the next day knowing that he didn't have to worry about missing work. What he didn't realize is that he actually missed a visitor from the Swiss government who simply slipped a letter in his mailbox after knocking and not getting an answer, though it also helped that the government agent was told about Sherlock's double shift by Sherlock's neighbor who knew where Sherlock worked. When Sherlock finally woke up he quickly noticed the letter.
"Hm...a letter for me?"
Sherlock opens the letter and is ultimately shocked at what he reads
To whom it may concern,
I know that your real name is Sherlock Holmes but that I can't call you that in public for safety reasons. I also know that you're the consultant I should go to while in this country if I need help and unfortunately I need help. I am the person who asked for directions and thought I could handle the situation alone once I knew where I was going but that turns out not to be the case after all. Meet me at your place tomorrow working or not so that I can discuss the situation in person since I don't feel secure discussing it in the letter
signed,
Yamato Johnathan
"So, he's a Swiss government agent, guess I'm meeting him tomorrow and depending on what's explained to me telling the bosses that I have to leave on a Swiss assignment"
The next day since he was already scheduled off he simply got into regular clothes and met the agent
"So you wanted to meet me to discuss what is going on correct?"
"Yes, sorry for being so secretive and not saying who I was the last time we met but I felt it was for the best at the time"
"I understand, and as a simple consultant I don't necessarily know every Swiss government agent that I come across unless they choose to identify themselves to me"
"Right in any case though I need to explain why I'm here in the first place. You see I needed to see two people in that building, one was a deep agent and the other their informant and since we'd lost contact with them recently..."
"I see, and by how things are going they are either dead or missing correct?"
"Yes, they are both missing right now"
"Very well I shall let my boss know the situation and I can help you starting today"
"Actually, this time the way you can help is by staying at your job, at least for now"
"Oh?"
"Drunk people sometimes tell bartenders things they don't normally tell most people. If the person who took those two away come here and speak about it to you..."
"I can report what they said back to you and you can take things from there with official police help backing you up"
"Exactly, they trust me and if I say that I got the information from an informant I want to protect by not revealing their identity I could keep who you are secret as well"
"Very well, I will still be informing my boss about the situation though so that I don't get paid by them since this is a Swiss government job"
"Very well"
"It's mainly because of an agreement we have but still is there any other way I can help you?"
"Yes actually, now that I'm thinking about it do you know of a better way to contact Switzerland without phones? I think mine's been compromised"
"Yes, but it takes longer for contact to happen"
"As long as it's secure that doesn't matter"
"It might if it's something critical"
"I have my ways around that issue"
"Good, because you might need it"
"I know, it's why I have a secondary method that's pretty quick, all Swiss agents have the same method by the way no matter if they're deep undercover or not"
"As long as it's a known method for your government I don't care to know any more, now then shall we get started on our separate assignments?"
"Indeed we shall"
And with that Sherlock informs his job about how he needs to work his usual shifts at the bar but that he was doing this for the Swiss government.
"Then they're the one's who will pay you for the duration of the assignment as agreed on already"
"Indeed"
"Though it's strange to think your Swiss job and your usual job are the same this time around"
"I know, but it's what the government agent asked for and it makes sense all things considered so I agreed to it"
"Very well"
"By the way since this is a Swiss government job while I'm still bar tending I might have to leave suddenly during my shift so..."
"Right, we'll handle that"
"Thanks"
"In the meantime though you have a shift tomorrow so you'd best make sure that you're well rested"
"I will"
And so Sherlock begins his job for the Swiss government the next day by being at his day job. He quickly realized that this might take quite some time and so simply did other things to keep his skills and training up to par.
"So...what are your plans to keep up your training?"
"I'm already doing them boss without you knowing it"
"Oh?"
"Indeed, my observation skills are as primed as ever and I can hear and remember all conversations at the bar whenever I am at my station"
"Prove it"
"Very well then I shall, the couple at the far right table is flagging down a waiter to order their food, both will go for wine and the man will go for a seafood dish of some type while the female will go for a meat dish of some sort with vegetables. While eating dinner the man is going to propose to the woman who may or may not say yes immediately since I can tell that they both love each other but she is shy while he isn't"
"How can you tell?"
"The man is fidgeting with his pocket regularly and the woman while comfortable enough for public eating is more quiet than he has been when speaking"
Ultimately Sherlock turned out to be correct that the boyfriend proposed that night and the woman actually said yes despite it being in such a public place. He also proved that his memory was excellent by recalling three different conversations that happened at the bar which also proved to his bosses that he was indeed still keeping up his skills for both jobs
