A/N: Hi. Obviously I wrote this before the holidays passed and am just now getting to it…fun fun.
OOOOOOOOO
Calli thumbed through a book without really seeing it. Dwayne plucked it from her hands and tossed it aside. Calli's hand remained in the book holding position.
"I was reading that," Calli said, her voice waspish.
"Then tell me the main protagonist's name," Dwayne said, watching her.
Calli lowered her hands. "Fuck you."
Dwayne watched her rise to her feet and stalk across the room. "You're moody."
"So what else is new?"
"More so than normal."
Calli shrugged and looked out her bedroom window.
"What's changed?" Dwayne asked, rising to his feet.
"The doctors switched my meds up again. Weight gain and irritability and skipping meals." Calli wrapped her arms around herself. "And none of you noticed."
Dwayne's eyes narrowed. "That's not something to brag about, Calli."
Calli looked at him. "I don't brag."
"David has to know."
"He probably already does." Calli frowned. "Damn mind connection thing that you've all got going on."
She's not wrong there, Dwayne thought, feeling his brother's anger through their bond.
"You should have told us."
Calli looked away, peering out the window again. "Maybe I stopped caring."
"What?"
"I realized something. Maybe David only loves me and the rest of you are feeding off of his emotions or vice versa. Maybe you all really don't love me. A mind trick in the making."
Dwayne was at her side in an instant. "Don't. Don't say that."
Calli shrugged. "It's been playing in my head. Over and over. Like a broken record."
Dwayne put his hand on her shoulder, squeezing. "So, pick another record to play."
Calli looked at him with dull eyes. "I wish it was that easy. I really do, Dwayne."
Dwayne cupped her face between his hands. He smoothed his thumbs over her cheeks. "Look at me. Calli, try to look in my eyes and see how much I love you. Me, personally. Not David. Not Paul. Not Marko. Me."
Calli stared at his chin. "I've never been good at holding gazes, Dwayne."
"I know. I know and you're allowed to look away as many times as you need. I'm just asking you to try."
Calli took a shaky breath. Dwayne felt her body tense, then relax. He saw her gaze rise and fall several times, hesitantly meeting his own. She let out another shaky breath and leaned into him.
"How could you love me?" she whispered, sadness lacing her voice.
Dwayne smiled. "Easy. Because you are you."
Calli met his gaze again. Dwayne kissed her softly. She responded automatically, kissing him back. Dwayne held her close and slowly moved them away from the window…
OOOOOOOOOO
Dwayne sat with Calli on the roof later that night. He had his arm around her for support. She leaned her head against his shoulder and looked at the world.
"I'm going to dye my hair red again," she announced. "Give myself some color back into my life. Besides you Boys."
Calli, I thought you said that you liked the black hair?"
"Something always changes my mind, y'know?" Calli reached up and touched his hair. "I do like your hair though."
Dwayne draped some of his hair over hers. Calli laughed and nudged him, knocking his hair off of her. Dwayne smiled, enjoying the sound of her laughter.
"You're so weird," Calli said, smiling. "Very weird." She kissed his cheek. "I like it."
Dwayne put a hand over his heart, pretending to be wounded. "Only like?"
"All right, love." Calli looked back out at the world, bathed in darkness. "Look! A meteor shower!"
Dwayne watched the stars falling across the night sky for a moment. His eyes turned back to Calli and he saw the stars reflecting in her eyes. There was a look of awe on her face.
She was meant to dance among the stars, Marko's voice crossed his mind.
She will. When we Turn her, Dwayne thought, continuing to watch Calli.
Can we do it soon? Paul asked. She'd make a wild Lost Girl.
Patience, Boys, David said. We've got some issues to work out.
Calli sniffled a few moments later. Dwayne was caught off by the tears that fell down her face.
"Calli?"
"I'm all right," Calli assured him. "It's just…I look for signs that my aunt is still around. In all the little things. Pennies on the ground, blue butterflies…I look for her everywhere. And now that it's getting closer to the holidays, my next birthday, and her one year anniversary of being gone…I asked her for a big sign." She glanced at him. "Silly, right?"
"No," Dwayne said, holding her close to his side. "No, it's not."
Calli glanced back at the meteor shower as it ended. "Do you think she and Grandpa sent that?"
Dwayne hesitated. "I think so."
Calli sighed. "Sometimes, I wish that we could have Turned them both. The world would be better with them in it."
Dwayne glanced up at the night sky. "They're still in this world. Just in a different way." He felt Calli's eyes on him. "They are never truly gone as long as there are people around that were affected by them. No matter how little that was. They still have and they always will be. Do you know why?"
"Why?"
Dwayne smiled. "Because you're going to be around forever."
Calli stared at his nose. "You Boys still want to Turn me? Even with all my issues?"
"Yes," Dwayn said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "We call them quirks by the way. And they make you interesting."
"Right." Calli yawned and leaned into him. "I love you."
OOOOOOOOOOO
Calli woke up to find Dwayne gone. Her hand was outstretched towards his pillow, but was curled around something cold.
A necklace dangled from her fingers when she lifted her hand. Calli stared at the fairy charm that held a crystal orb. In the orb were shooting stars.
Calli smiled and closed her eyes against a wave of tears. "I love them all…"
OOOOOOOOOOOO
