Mummy and I watch the video in silence. It is several minutes long, and by the time we get to the end, Mum is awake. "What's going on?" She asks.
"Watch this," I say. I press play and the video restarts. When it finishes, we sit in silence. What the article uncovered is massive and could change everything. How can I rely on what I know and what the queens told me? There is too much missing from my knowledge for it to be a mistake.
"What do you two think about it?"
"I don't know," Mummy says. "What they uncovered is massive and changes everything."
"Does it, though?"
Mummy nods. She stands up and begins pacing. It's only a few moments later that I notice I'm doing the same thing.
"We need to figure something out and tell the others."
"What do we tell them? Everything we know is a lie, and we succeed? Everything from Princess Elizabeth's birth to Henry VIII's death is a lie? How do we do that? How do we explain everything? Besides, we don't know how to fake everything that is going to happen. If someone from the future finds out everything, we must have left some evidence behind. I say we don't do anything and continue with the current plan until we have more information." I grab my phone and text Luke, asking him to look for more information. Luke texts back a few moments later, and he agrees to keep looking.
It is the best idea we have right now. All we can do is wait and continue as we are. Mum and Mummy help me get dressed for the day, and I help them. When we are ready, we go to Lady Anne's chambers and continue as if nothing has changed. The only thing I do differently is that I keep my phone with me, so I will know if Luke texts me. I show it to those that are in on the secret, and they marvel over it. "I am waiting for my brother to text me," I say. "He sent a link to an article earlier confirming what we are doing. I want more information before we make any more changes to history."
"Should we contact the Higher Authority?" Anne asks. "See what they say?"
"It could be a good idea. I will need access to a weapon."
Other than that conversation, our day continues as normal. Mum and Mummy quietly withdraw to a different room, and I hear modern music coming from there when I pass. I can also hear them singing, and I smile. At least they aren't giving up yet. All I need is something to hold onto. I continue walking and head into the garden. I remember meeting William here. It was a beautiful day, and I wish he were here. However, I cannot have anything. All I can do is wait and see if I will meet him again before the twentieth century. I walk through the gardens for a while, but it is freezing, so I head inside after a few minutes. There is so much I must think about, and I don't want to proceed until I know what I'm doing.
When I go inside, I almost walk into King Henry. However, I stop myself and curtsey to him. "Your Majesty." It's a miracle I haven't run into him in some time since I'm serving Anne every day.
"Mistress Emma, it has been some time since we met. How are you doing?"
"Not so great. My brother uncovered some information that could change much about what I know about your reign."
"Great, just great. At least you will get the truth now. Anyway, I must wish you a good day. I am rather busy and need to get on." He walks away.
George, Cromwell, and More are talking together in a corridor, almost out of sight. I wouldn't have known they were there if I didn't see George's cloak. I hover in the corridor for a while. "We haven't heard from Lady Anne or her ladies for a while," Cromwell says. "Are you sure we can trust them?"
"Why not ask one of us yourselves?" I ask, joining the group and startling the three men. "Before you ask, I was not there long. However, if you want a private conversation, you must learn to hide better."
George chuckles. "What gave us away?"
"You cloak. Had I not spotted it, I wouldn't have realised you were there."
"Oh."
"Anyway, that was not what I was here to talk about." I take a deep breath. "My brother, Luke, has uncovered evidence that we succeed."
"Really?" More asks. "What did he find?"
"It will be best to show you. Come on; we should go to Lady Anne's rooms. It will be easier to explain it to everyone at once."
We head there to find King Henry is also there. We cannot talk with him there. While he is talking with Anne, I head to my fellow maids-of-honour and sit with them. My actions are growing suspicious, and I must make it look like I am not doing anything unordinary—especially with the king here. I find some sewing I abandoned some time ago and continue with it. My days are mostly full of sewing and doing menial tasks. When will I get to do something interesting? When will I finally get to live my life the way I want to?
I know the answer to the last one. I must wait until 1900 to begin sailing. However, I want to do something more exciting sooner. There must be something I can do.
As I am thinking so deeply, I don't notice King Henry leaving Anne's rooms until Mummy taps me on the shoulder. "Cromwell, More, and George said you had something to tell them."
"I did, yes." I get up, join the others in Anne's bedchamber and shut the door behind me. I play the video for everyone, and we sit in silence for a while.
"So, we succeed?" George asks. "That is the news we need."
"But the fact no one found out about it until 2010 makes me worried," I say. "If King Henry VIII dies next year, who comes back to life, and who does he bring with him?"
"I think we need to bring together as many of the queens as possible," Jane says. "There's three of us here, Catalina is not here, but we can ask Bessie if she can take her in for a while. Who else is there?"
"Anna of Cleves, she's in Cleves and impossible to reach. Then there's Katheryn Howard. She'll be eight now."
"Can we make a place for her here or with Lady Mary?" Jane asks.
"There is one major problem. Katheryn, she... it's not my place to say, but she's going to be abused in 1536 by her music teacher. If we take Katheryn out of that situation..."
"We're already changing things," Mummy says. "Would taking Katheryn out of a harmful situation help her?"
Come to think of it, Katheryn never mentioned her past much, but she did recognise Henry Mannox. Could it be we get her out just before her abuse starts? I voice my opinion to the rest of the group. "It happens when you are supposed to fall, Anne," I say. "We need to get her out of the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk's household at the beginning of 1536 at the latest."
"The latest," Anne repeats. "Got it. What about Anna?"
A plan begins forming in my head. "She arrives in 1540. I already know German, so with your permission, I could go to Cleves now and tell her what is going to happen."
"You would do that?"
"If I can get to Cleves, yes. However, it will be a difficult journey, and there is a chance her family won't let me see her in private."
I begin pacing and looking around the room. Getting to Anna is difficult. "Maybe it's best to wait until 1539 to contact Anna's family, pretending the King is looking for marriage. Anything before that could be suspicious."
The others nod. "Should we bring Jane back to Court?" Anne asks. "If she is supposed to be Henry VIII's third wife, it could be best if she is nearby in 1533."
The new year is rapidly approaching, and we are struggling to keep up. Having someone else from the group here could be useful, but then I must face the problem I've been fighting for years. I don't have a choice. "Send for her," I say.
