As we enter the New Year, we begin packing up our belongings. While we have not heard from the King of Scotland, we must move. King Henry must be gathering a force to capture us soon. Even if he does not, Mummy wants to move closer to the border. She asked another servant to follow the first one to tell him where we are heading next. "Where shall our next stop be?" Mary asks. We are in the dining hall with a massive map of England before us. All the manor houses and castles are underlined, and we are trying to work out our next moves.
"If we want to get close to the Scottish border, we could go to Skipton Castle first and move our way up," Anne suggests.
"That will be under the King's control," Mummy argues. "He would've told everyone to defend their castles from us."
As we argue about our next moves, a letter arrives from James V. Catalina breaks the seal and reads the letter. She smiles and hands the letter to Mummy. "King James is letting us all cross the border." Thank goodness for that! We don't have to worry about trying to get to the coast or raising an army. We will be safe.
But Katheryn will still be here, and we can't do anything to save her. Not yet, anyway. But we may have a chance once we reach Scotland.
Mummy sighs and looks at the map. "You're right, Anne. Going to Skipton first will give us a chance to stop at least for a night; then we can move on to Middlesham Castle. It's only an hour or two away."
"Yes, by using a car in the twenty-first century, Mummy!" I shoot back. "It will take longer than that now, but it's doable."
We finish packing and begin moving out. As we ride, I'm certain I hear more horses, and I stop the group. "Is it just me, or can I hear more horses?" We stop and listen.
Rocky looks back. "Go, go, go!" Our horses go into a canter.
"Stop in the name of the king!" A man yells—the Duke of Norfolk! I should have realised Henry would've sent him.
We ride so fast the countryside around us blurs. Men shout and hooves pound. A machine-like wheezing noise surrounds us, and a room materialises around us. "What the—?" Catalina asks as we stop our horses.
"Doctor?" I ask.
The Doctor appears around the console. "What the hell do you lot think you are doing?!"
We climb off our horses, and Mummy and I approach the Doctor. Everyone else is too busy looking around. "We may have planned to kill the king,"
The Doctor puts his head in his hands. "And did you know about it?"
"I did," Mummy says.
"I wasn't talking to you, Sarah Jane. William, did you or any of the other officers know about it?!"
Captain Smith, my father, walks out of a corridor and towards the console, followed by the rest of the Titanic officers. "What's going on?" He asks.
"Did any of you know that the queens were planning on killing Henry VIII?"
"I did," William says. "They were discussing it in 1531."
The Doctor shakes his head. "And you didn't think to tell me back then?!"
"I am loyal to my wife and her friends."
"She's not your wife."
"Not yet." William folds his arms and glares at the Doctor.
And he's still in his White Star Line uniform.
I can't help myself and burst out laughing. Will gives me a quizzical look before realising how silly he must look. His mouth twitches upwards, and he starts laughing.
"As fun as this is," Charles says, "we will want to go before Henrat finds his way inside."
"Yep," the Doctor agrees and presses a few buttons and pulls a lever.
"You're kidnapping the horses!" Maria yells. The Doctor looks at her.
"You want to get away from Henry VIII, right?"
"Don't you mean Henrat?" Will mumbles, and we start laughing.
"Where is Ruby?" Captain Smith asks.
We stop laughing. "Doctor, we need to save her," Mummy says.
"Where is she?" The Doctor looks at Mummy.
"In the Tower of London."
The Doctor looks around the room. "She's imprisoned?!"
Mummy nods. "She went to distract King Henry and his soldiers so we could escape. We don't know where in the Tower she is or anything."
"Is she alive?"
Mummy opens her mouth, but no sound comes out.
There is a chance Mum could already be dead.
I press a hand to my mouth. In all the time since we escaped, I never thought that Mum could be dead. Is she even immortal?
Someone grabs me before I collapse to the ground. I look up to see Captain Smith's blue eyes staring back at me. "It is all right; we will figure something out."
I give him the best smile I can. "I know."
He helps me towards the seat. "Emma, I do not wish to assume anything, but has either Sarah Jane or Ruby told you about..."
"You being my father?"
The other Titanic officers look at us. "What?" Bert asks. "What do you mean, he's your father?"
"That's not my story to tell."
Captain Smith nods before he looks at the officers. "I will tell you later."
The Doctor pilots the TARDIS alone, much like he did last time. I watch him work for a while, but my interest soon dies away, and I turn my attention to Mummy. She's joined me and Captain Smith on the seat. He takes her hand, and I can see a look of utter adoration in his eyes. Mummy's looking the same at him. The only time I've seen her this happy and content is when she's with Mum. Captain Smith reaches up a hand and touches her cheek, and Mummy leans into the touch, closing her eyes.
I stand up. Mummy and Daddy deserve a moment together. Wait, did I just call Captain Smith 'Daddy'? This is going to mess up time!
I walk over to Catalina, Anne, and Jane. "You could have told us," Jane says.
"I was trying to sort through it myself." I rub the back of my neck. "And I didn't feel comfortable talking about it. I still have to go through the Titanic and—"
"What's the Titanic?" Henry asks.
I turn to the Titanic officers. "Are you all from pre-April 1912?" Everyone nods. "Then I don't know how much I can tell you."
"I see," Harold says. "I think. No, hold on—"
"This is the first time we all met," Will explains. "And you mentioned something bad happening in April 1912. Is it to do with the Titanic?"
I give them a silent nod.
