Mum eventually picks up. "Hello, Emma. What can I do for you."
"Did you ever get arrested in 1534?"
"Yeah, but it was only briefly. I was released in March."
So it was Mum who was in the Tower. "I didn't let you give me immortality is that I already have it."
"That explains a lot. But why wouldn't my bracelet let me take you with me?"
"It's because I'm a Qetesh, and you aren't. I know I am your mother, but the bracelet won't let any Qetesh not biologically related to someone wearing it teleport with them."
"Thanks for clearing that up."
"Anyway, I need to get going. Your older self is returning to the sea now the government decided to get its head out of the sand and let her go. Since they haven't raised the school leaving age to the five hundreds yet, they can't keep you."
"That's brilliant! Right, I'll let you go."
"Okay, oh, and Emma? Good luck. Although you won't need it if I'm still here."
I laugh. "Well, thank you all the same. Bye."
"Bye." Mum hangs up.
I turn back to the group. "It turns out Mum is already immortal and gets released in March."
"So we have nothing to worry about," Catalina says. "We better get to Skipton."
"Why?" The Doctor asks.
"The King's men are chasing us," I remind him. "And we don't want to be stuck in the twenty-first century. The last thing I need is three versions of me running about."
"Right, yes, of course." The Doctor begins setting the coordinates, and we arrive outside Skipton at the right time, thank goodness.
When I leave the TARDIS, I look up at the gatehouse to see two massive towers looming before me. While Skipton Castle is supposed to act as a fortress, will it help us? Will it give us what we need? The others follow me out and stare up at the castle in wonder. "Remember, we cannot stay here long," Catalina says. "The sooner we are out of England, the better."
The Doctor and the officers bring the horses out, and we lead them to the stables. "Right, I think I need to give you some instructions," the Doctor says. "Do not mess with history much more. We cannot afford to lose Tudor England, and I don't want to lose my friend."
"Henry VIII is your friend?!" I snarl.
"We go back." The Doctor shrugs as we finish sorting out the last horse.
"Don't think your friendship with him will spare him."
"Don't talk that way with me." The Doctor points his finger in my face. "I can take you out of time so history will continue as it should."
"But you wouldn't."
The Doctor opens his mouth, then closes it again. "If you change too much, Sarah Jane will cease to exist." I look over at Mummy.
"We already made our choice," Mummy says. "We know the risks involved. Surely there are some events in history that you want to change?" The Doctor remains silent and will not meet our gazes. "This is one of the things we want to change. Even if we change our minds, King Henry will have us arrested and executed on sight."
"I can talk to him."
"Don't bother." Mummy pushes past him and walks out of the stables.
I follow her, and we stand in front of the gatehouse. The wind starts blowing. At least we don't have to worry about getting hair in our eyes. "Have we made the right choice?" She asks.
"About Henry VIII?" I ask.
"Not just that." Mummy looks at me and sighs. "All I wanted was a life with you, but now I'm actually living it..."
"You're missing the twenty-first century."
Mummy nods and closes her eyes. "We haven't even lived through three decades yet. I don't know how much more I can take."
I hug Mummy, and she wipes her tear-filled eyes. "We will get through it together. Even now, I'm still struggling to adjust."
I eventually let her go, and Mummy holds my hands. "No one said this will be easy."
"If it were, I would be worried."
Mummy laughs. "So would I." She holds out her arm for me. "Well, we better make the most of it."
I take her arm, and we walk through the gatehouse and the main castle looms before us. We stop walking and stare at it.
People are walking along the battlements with bows and arrows. They were ready for us. One of them notices us and takes aim. "RUN!" Mummy yells, and we sprint out of the gatehouse towards the others. "We need to leave! We must go now!" We leave the horses behind and sprint for the TARDIS. My ears ring. My limbs scream as I push them harder than I have in years.
One of the arrows catches my dress. I almost trip and turn back. "Emma!" Catalina makes a beeline for me.
"Leave me! Save yourselves!"
"You created the entire plan. I am not leaving you behind. If you get captured, so do I!" We both begin pulling at my dress, but the arrow remains firmly in the ground.
"Go, Catalina."
"Never." She grabs my face and kisses me. I let go of my skirt and briefly kiss her back.
"Now go. I can handle whatever they throw at me, but you can't. You're mortal."
"But I—"
"GO!" I push Catalina away. I pull my bracelet off and press it into her hands. "Run!" Catalina looks at me, tears filling her eyes. We hear horses running towards us. Catalina turns and runs.
"Don't let her get away!" One of the men yells. Most of them ride past me, but a couple of them climb down. I watch as Catalina slams the TARDIS door shut, and it fades away.
