"He doesn't remember me."

"You left when he was really young. It's only natural."

Jeff's eyes held more than hurt in them, there was self-loathing too.

He'd had to give himself a good hard shake.

Of course Scotty didn't remember him. He'd left for Mars when he wasn't even six months old.

How could he expect a three-year-old to remember that?

But then the boy surprised them both.

Scott came back into the room carrying a picture frame and climbed back onto Lucy's lap. He frowned at the picture then looked at Jeff. Then at his Mom.

He pointed to the picture then to Jeff while holding Lucy's gaze, showing her the picture but not Jeff.

Jeff bit his lip, wondering what his boy was doing.

'My Daddy?'

'Yes, Scott. This is your Daddy.'

And with that Scott dropped the picture and launched himself into Jeff's arms with an excited squeal.

'Daddy!'
